Review Maharajah - Cape Town Central

Really yummy food, their South African curries were amazing. I have to say the service was even better - I would come back here for both. Definitely book because it’s very popular!

What a fantastic experience, totally worth driving out to. Vindaloo is not on the menu, but it's available, and what I will order from now on! What used to be a service bar only, is now a nice modern bar where drinks are served.

We used this restaurant for an office function. They catered and delivered to the office. The service was exceptional with professional teams that go out of their way to make sure you have an warm and inviting experience. And the food was amazing! Our teams loved it and many of them mentioned that they will be visiting and eating at the restaurant in future. Thank you guys!

We recently celebrated Diwali and I am so pleased that we chose Maharajah Tamboerskloof to cater our dinner. The experience was an absolute pleasure from start to end and not to mention the delicious chicken curry and the plentiful platter that they went the extra mile and hand delivered to my door. It was service with a smile. Thank you Roland & Tereena for making our Diwali special. See you again soon!

My parents have come to this restaurant for date nights for years. It’s one of their favourites. Last night, they finally took me and my siblings there. It was so good! The service was great, and the food was wonderful! Even my 13 year old brother loved it, so I would say it is kid friendly. Definitely going back soon!

We are in Cape Town for a little bit of a holiday and we felt like eating a bunny chow. The food was absolutely delicious like really (10/10) and the service was AMAZING! Edwin and Baldwin made our experience so much more awesome!

I’ve ordered 6 times in a space of a month! These guys are on a whole other level. The food is amazing! From Rotis to Bunny chows to samosas they just insanely delicious. Well worth the cost, I have to stop my self from ordering ever day. My goodness gracious, this is high end Indian food .

I recently dined at this local restaurant, and I must say it was an exceptional experience from start to finish. The ambiance was cozy and inviting, setting the stage for an enjoyable evening. The menu offered a wide variety of options, catering to various tastes and dietary preferences. I started with the lamb mince samosa, the flavours were well-balanced and left me excited for what was to come. For the main course, I opted for the lamb madras, and it was a true standout. The lamb was perfectly cooked and the accompanying basmati rice along with the complimentary tomato and onion salad just hit the spot. The side of garlic naan was huge and perfectly cooked. To cap off the meal, I indulged in a decadent Lindt chocolate brownie. This warm chocolaty dish was a pure delight, and the vanilla ice cream on the side was the perfect cool contrast. The service was impeccable, with attentive and knowledgeable staff who enhanced the overall dining experience. The chef’s attention to detail in every dish was evident, and it made for a memorable culinary journey. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a delectable Indian dining experience in a charming atmosphere. It’s the kind of place you’ll want to return to again and again.

We ordered via Uber Eats… just wow! Thank you, plenty of food. Good quality. Taste was really nice.

After many years this restaurant has consistently given excellent service and excellent authentic food! All the dishes are delicious!

I’ve been to Maharajah on several occasions and I thoroughly enjoy their food. However, this time I decided to deviate from my usual chicken curry order to try out the butter chicken roti roll. The flavor was great but it was almost inedible. With every bite I either bit into a whole cinnamon stick or a star anise. Please consider using ground spices!

We went for dinner on a Thursday evening, there were only 4 other tables in the restaurant, yet despite ordering 2 veg and 1 chicken dish at 19h10 our food only arrived at 20h00! I don’t understand why the service was slow. The other disappointing thing was the dirty crockery and glassware which were full of lip and finger prints :( totally gross! Other than that the food was okay...they seem to oscillate between mild and chilli extreme. Will not be returning ever!

Being an ex Durban couple we have always loved curry but forgot how good the Durban tasting curry was, well no more. Maharajah definitely cooks their curry the Durban style and we will be visiting many times to work through the menu.

Unfortunately the resturant doesn’t go with the name, being in Cape Town we were guided to this place for indian cuisine and this was one of the worst experience with the food , it seems the food wasn’t cooked properly the roti was said to be of wheat but it ended up of maida. Overall a very bad experience with this resturant. They need to learn a lot about how to prepare indian cuisine.

Must have had renovations recently - the look and ambience finally fit the quality and deliciousness of the food. I'm definitely going there again.

Indian cuisine has to be my favourite, but not from this restaurant! When I go out, the ambience and service does not bother me. As long as my food ends up in front of me I’m happy.

I tried two veg dishes and was disappointed. It tasted like they had thrown a premix curry powder into a tin of tomatoes and made a sauce. It was watery and lacked flavour, other than chili.
I appreciate food that can be full of flavour without being too spicy. I didn’t get this here.

This authentic little Indian restaurant, nestled in the heart of the city, welcomes you with the subtle scent of incense and an aromatic wave of spices. The staff are extremely friendly and accommodating which sets things off to a great start. If it’s your first time there then the platter for two is a great way for you to try out a handful of their signature dishes. All the dishes are packed with flavor, from the chicken korma to the simple cucumber raita! I look forward to returning for a giant bowl of their chicken korma!

It was our last day in cape town. So me and 8 of my friends decided to go for a nice Indian restaurant. Our mistake was to choose Maharaja restaurant. When we booked , we were told that each person have to order 1 dish and there would be no sharing , which is acceptable for a good restaurant. But here's my issue. The food was so bad we had to waste half of it.
The mushroom curry was too sour, Chicken hot curry was literally made up of chilli powder only. When we complained the manager said every1 likes it here. (So I suppose we have to like it also).

They charge unnecessary service tax of 12.5% and expect to be paid Tip also.
Trust me if you are looking for authentic Indian food, this is not the place to choose. Ambience 2/5
Friendly Staff 3/5
Food Quality 1/5
Price 2/5

I am a huge fan of Indian food. Maharaja is a really nice restaurant, the service is just amazing! After our second visit, the waiter already knew us and what we ordered the last time. For first time Indian eaters it's perfect, because the service personal can tell you everything and can suggest the perfect meal for you. I can fully recommend this place to everybody who likes indian food, a cozy atmosphere and outstanding service.

Love this place - best Indian food in Cape Town for sure and the manager Jason is absolutely wonderful. Massive portions and reasonably priced! Would recommend the Prawn Tikka and the Matter Pantera.

The butter chicken was delicious and made up for less exciting other dishes.

The veggie curry was disappointing. Nothing exciting there.

Also tried a lamb curry dish which was better than the veg dish but not comparable with the butter chicken.

Excellent lamb rogan josh.
Most tender chicken in chicken beryani.
Will go again and again.
Nice authenthic south indian curry served with home made paratha

After going to Maharajah this week I can see why reservations are necessary! Luckily they had a table for two that they could seat us at and I am SO glad because that night I had one of the most delicious meals of my life. The butter chicken pasta (I ordered mild) was INCREDIBLE! Our sparkling water was flat on opening the bottle but that isn't the restaurant's fault and to be honest I didn't care because our food was so exceptional. I'm craving it as I write this 🍲

Let's first start with saying that myself and my partner LOVE Indian cuisine.

That said, we have been at almost all of the Indian restaurants in the CBD.

THIS WAS THE WORST!!!!

The food was presented well (aside from the samoosas) and looked really inviting.
The taste however left me speechless. There was NO FLAVOR whatsoever!!!

I cannot begin to describe how tasteless every dish in that platter was.

Do yourself a favor and NEVER eat here if flavor is what you're after.

This was my 1st and LAST visit.

Side note- the manager was apologetic and offered to bring more side dishes.. But I was not in the mood for more disappointments.

Our Waiter was friendly and the service was a redeeming factor.

Anyhow.... Left majorly disappointed...

Had dinner here last night. I made a very last minute reservation but we were still accommodated nicely. Sashen and I both had butter chicken, and we shared a butter naan. The butter chicken was nice overall, a good portion size. I just didn't enjoy the cardamon after taste. Also felt the butter naan should have been fluffier, it was very heavy and hard. Service was efficient throughout the evening.

I really like the curry here. Yeah, they can be a little slow sometimes when they're busy, but the staff are usually pretty friendly. One time, though, my partner's curry tasted a bit burnt, and the manager came to tell us it wasn't burnt and that maybe he simply couldn't handle the chili - interesting approach to customer service. Also, I wish they served basmati rice standard with all their curries, instead of yellow Tastic with frozen peas and carrots in it. That would probably go a long way in taking this restaurant to the next level.

Tasty Indian food. We ordered the lamb rogan josh (medium heat), the butter chicken (mild) and the vegetarian curry (medium-hot). All curries were prepared with fresh ingredients, quality meat and were very flavourful. The veg curry had quite a kick so only order hot if you can handle the heat. Portion size is very good (you will more than likely have leftovers to take home for lunch the next day). All curry is served with a big portion of rice. They also give you complimentary tomato & onion mix and a tamarind (sweet/sour) sauce. We decided to try a couple of side dishes to get the full experience (cucumber & yoghurt Mix, mango & lime atchar, and lentil dahl). All were delicious (especially the lentil dahl!). The yoghurt Mix is good to use to help control the heat of the dishes so I'd recommend this side as a must. The rotti's were ok, they aren't homemade so do taste a little mass produced (not as fresh and flaky/crispy as a homemade rotti). Prices are fair and you feel like you got good quality food for your money. All in all a great meal with friendly service.

Advertised "Basmati rice" is unfortunately Tastic fantastic which was a major let down.

Mediocre curries (chicken makhne, chicken korma, lamb rogan) found the flavors to be not fully developed but the favorite of the lot was the makhne. Not sure if the curries had a Cape Town twist but it certainly tasted like they had a bit of Cape Malay spices.

Peshwari naans were a little stodgy but tasty none-the-less!

Portions were well sized but way too much rice and it was wasted!

All were take always.

Looooove indian food and this beats Bukhara a mile a way. The only place that I have been too that sells the BEST indian food in Cape Town. Butter chicken is a definite must have. You will lick your fingers of the goodness. Garlic naan goes well with it instead of rice.
Mandy Jones
The best Indian food in Cape Town! Their lamb korma is my absolute favourite, and their butter chicken a close second! They also have some crazy hot dishes for those who are a little more adventurous!

New favourite Indian place alert! Calvin Duffus and I craved Indian last night because I had a veg biryani a couple of weeks ago from Bihari that was mouth-watering good. Bihari can be a bit pricey so we Zomato-ed our way across Cape Town until we clicked on Maharajah. We made a booking, and went. Everything about this restaurant was awesome. The service especially. Our waiter was attentive and gave suggestions. We were well looked after. I also got a takeaway for my sister and mentioned to the waiter I would be doing this. Without me having to prompt him, he came halfway through the meal to take the order so that it would be ready by the time Calvin and I finished eating.

The food was exceptionally good. I had a beg biryani and Calvin had the butter chicken. Just thinking about it now makes my mouth water. Lucky I have a takeaway since the portions were so big ;)

Highly recommend this restaurant. Great location, too. Love the view.

Best Indian food ever!!! I'm so in love with this place. It's quiet, small and intimate. And the best damn curry! Thank you guys for always impressing my tastebuds, it's simply awesome!!!

On a mission to find wonderful Indian food we were told this was the place to eat. Do not let the simple decor fool you-the beautiful smells as you open the door are a glimmer of the delight that awaits you. I had the planner butter masala and my husband the lamb rogan josh. The lamb was wonderful and tender and perfectly spiced. The butter masala lacked luster and punch - it was really tasty but it needed quite a lot more seasoning. The service was efficient and friendly and a comprehensive wine list.

An absolute must if you are looking for an authentic Indian experience coupled with fantastic service. Our waitress was incredibly knowledgable about all dishes on the menu, even going as far as recommending which wine would compliment the dishes and what would be better suited to mild, medium or hot. We had the butter chicken and the lamb korma - both amazing with super tender meat! This will definitely be a do over again and again all throughout winter.

I went here with my boyfriend and we had a great time. The value for money is amazing. I had the chicken korma, bf had the lamb Rogan Josh and the portions were very generous - lots of meat and sauce and not just packed with vegetables. The food took a little while but they did warn us it would, and it was so tasty we were happy to wait. Staff were nice and attentive. The ambiance was a bit average but ambiance is not the reason I'm going there.

I love Indian food and can eat all kinds of curry from cheap to expensive traditional curry, but this was one of the worst curry I ever tasted.

After reading all the reviews we were so excited to try out this Indian restaurant. We ordered the lamb on the bone and the mixed seafood curry. Our lamb was undercooked and tough and our seafood curry was made with smoked oysters killing the taste of a curry.
Being avid Indian eaters we left very disappointed. Unfortunately we were all very ill that evening and next day.
Hope it was just a bad day but we won't be returning.

Absolutely AMAZING food, every time!
The soya mince samosas will ruse even the most carnivorous of diners. The bean curry is delicious! A gem in the midst of the Rondebosch rubble. They are very generous with portions, very open and welcoming, and the service is great!
I recommend this to vegans, vegetarians and meat-eaters alike.

We love Indian cuisine, this is by far ranked in my top 4 Indian restaurants. Simple and tasty, their Food is always at a high standard and consistently so. Decor and table setting simplistic and neat.

1st time visit, I had 2 separate good reviews about this place, although it doesn't look much from the outside. On a tuesday evening, they were pretty much full, about 80% occupied, but it isn't a big restaurant, which is great!

So I was there for my birthday, just a social gathering, nothing big. We had 5 of us, food decent size, price is also reasonable. We had a variety of starters to share, each of us had main, and by the end of the evening, no room for dessert and I took a doggie bag home!!

The service (our waiter Jagan, I believe is not the right spelling) was above average, he was entertaining and still attentive. I felt like I went to a friend's home for dinner.

P.S. only took one photo, and it was starters, I was too busy eating! :)

I love this place! The food is fantastic and the staff are charming. It is authentic Indian style, so don't be offended if it's different to your western dining experience. They do takeaways too!
Matt
The Indian restaurant for those whose experience in Indian food comes from supermarket bought packet curries. Bland food with flavors that lack authenticity, they even serve their meals with American short grain rice and charge extra for basmati. There are two other great Indian restaurants in the area so it's advisable to give it a miss.

We were so excited to eat here, been looking forward to it for ages. I called them up around 7 and placed an order of a lamb rogan josh and some mince curry. Because really, what's better than curry on a cold wet winters evening. We were told that our order would take no more than 40 minutes. We went to go and collect it and the waiters were very confused. They went to check in the kitchen for our food and it wasn't there. They walked past 4 times with no update, eventually I asked for a manager who just looked at me and went back into the kitchen. After this, we just left. We felt extremely disrespected. Would not go back here again.

Such good food. We had chicken korma, vegetable briyani and prawn ticka with garlic naan and paratha. Accompanied with Protea Merlot. Tasty sambals and pappadums. Generous portions and great service. Thank you!

This was quite an unexpected gem. The decor could be better. But the food is incredible, tastes just like Indian food should be. Unbelievably delicious - this is my new favorite Indian restaurant. Service is on par with the food. Highly recommend it.

Have never been disappointed in Maharaja. Love their chicken korma. Dinner mates have raved about their prawn curry, lamb korma and hot lamb curry. Service always friendly and caring; no obsequious waitering! It's fair to say I eat there at least four times a year.

I've been looking for an Indian restaurant for some time now. The Maharajah has apparently been trading, not in the same location, for 30 years.

The staff were super friendly and easy going making the atmosphere extremely pleasant. They serve a good variety of items, both northern and southern Indian dishes on the menu. I tried a couple different meals and both were very good. The portions or very generous for the price.

The Maharajah will be my local indian, I feel.
Melissa Delport
The best Indian in town! Absolutely delicious but a complete surprise given that the interior which desperately do with some love and care. Perhaps they get away with it because the food is just simply so delicious! Service with a smile and a welcoming atmosphere. A definite must when in Cape Town!
Therena
Their food is spectacular. Good portions and value for money!

I'd have to admit that I haven't had such beautifully, delicious and well combined food like this in ages.
If its Durban Indian Cuisine you want, then you need not look any further! My favourite indian place in Cape Town!
