Review House Of H - Cape Town Central

It's really refreshing to find something different AND tasty. Cool laid back atmosphere with yummy steaks and interesting salad options. Food came out quickly and staff was all very friendly. Decor was eclectic but fun. Certainly worth a trip!

An interesting concept for a restaurant or should I say meal venue. You will receive a credit card on a lanyard which you need to use when you order something from the bar or kitchen. Once you are done you hand the card back and then pay, so keep your card safe. The food was good and service was super fast however I do feel that it was a bit pricey for what you get. The place has a good street like vibe which is geared to the young adult. There is limited parking out front and the entrance is not wheelchair accessible.

This is on my top favorite spots in the city. The staff is great. And the food is out of this world. H is an amazing chef and a great guy. The ambience is stellar. Can't say enough positive things about this spot.

A friend from the area recommended this to me for my birthday dinner, so glad I went. Great ribeye steak, it melted in my mouth. The gin & tonics were really refreshing as well, the bartender knows what he's doing no doubt. Also a super cool atmosphere, it would be great to bring a big group of people and some card games!

If you are looking for something different in Cape Town, then House of H is definitely the place to be. They have a unique self service concept where you order your own food and drinks directly at the chef. The food is absolutely delicious, and they serve homemade fries!

Little heaven on earth... Great food - they offey takeaway's too 😉 Still my favorite spot whenever I am in the Cape Town CBD. They have gained a lot of popularity in the past few years and that personal attention to detail is gone, but the food is still exceptionally good. Unique hipster setup (or at least that what I would say). It's not like any other restaurant you would see in the city. So if you want something to eat that is filling and you are in the CBD, I highly recommend House of H. The veggies section is crazy tasty too and the serving is HUGE. You definitely get value for your money.

This place was great! I love the system, each person gets a card, you order your food from the kitchen and drinks from the bar, at the end of the night you settle your own bill. Genius! I had the steak roll with half chips and half salad - half salad is a selection of 3 of the salads they have available, each one was great, and the steak roll was AMAZING! Tender, cooked to perfection and Sooo tasty. Highly recommended!

Quite possibly the best steak & ribs I have ever had. Great team and an eclectic venue. Next Time in CT I am coming straight here
Mario Hartneck
Place is interesting. U get a card and its expected of you to do your own orders at the 'kitchen' and bar. What u have ordered gets loaded into the card. When you leave the card gets swiped and u pay. Below are pics of the waffle cuppaccino

Very friendly staff, great service and the burgers are something you'd go back for any day! Whether you're raving hungry or just want to chill with some friends, this place has the perfect atmosphere

We saved our visit to House of H for Valentines Day 2019 as my boyfriend had heard a radio advert sometime in 2018 and he had been dying to go ever since. The venue's decor is incredible, the home brewed/fermented gin & tonics were lovely apart from the fact that they were out of stock of the first two flavors I wanted. It was such a different and interesting vibe to be around, something new to look at at every corner. We both ordered burgers (menu is very small but I am told every dish is DIVINE) and my Waygu burger was awesome. My three star rating is down to the fact that because it's a self service establishment you are sort of screwed if you require assistance. I dropped a full glass of wine on our table which broke and spilled everywhere and we were offered no assistance at all (restaurant wasn't extremely busy at this stage, I made a point to check). We had made our way to the front of the restaurant to pay our bill and leave the restaurant and the wine and glass had still not been cleared up. Either way, we'll definitely be back to try the rest of the menu!

Different expletive with self service. Works well. Food is amazing and portions are large. Vibe and settings provides perfect atmosphere for your experience. The staff are helpful and friendly.

08 March 2019I had lunch at the House of H. RegretsWorst experience ever. Staff so rude.

They prepared my steak and add some herbs with mint, i informed them I didn't want herbs, and I am allergic to mint. They wanted to remove the mint from the stake. I insisted on a fresh steak, with just spice only.

I saw the lady which was preparing the food, carrying the meat with her hands.

While at it, she added chips (fries) to someone's plate, in which she used her hands without gloves to take the chips from the pan to the plate (the chips were cold).

While at it, I saw her wiping her nose with the back of her hand, and then without washing her hands, she continue cutting some stake into beef strips.

As she was about to collect me meat, I asked her to not to use her hands.

While I was talking to her, another lady dipped her hands in the chips container and add to my plate.

I told her not to touch my food with her hands, she looked at me, aggressively put the plate down and she said, "ey" as she walked away.

They seem surprised that I could tell them about food hygiene and contamination, and it was like foreign to them. Eventually after insisting they removed my chips, they did and used a fork to put chips into my plate.

But what disgusted me most, is that it seem its standard practice for the people to touch the food with bare hands. Even when they wipe their noses, they don't sanitize, in fact I've not seen a sanitizer there.

They have no regards for hygiene, the dont respect patrons, and the general cleanliness of employees is not there.

The place is dirty and I advise anyone who is health conscious not to go there. Go there at your own risk.

1 star is the minimum I could select from the system. If there was a negative star, i could have given them -100 stars.

They don't deserve to be in food business

What an amazing experience this evening. We went for a friend's birthday. The whole concept of the place is very trendy. Would highly recommend their 🥗 salads and the cheeseburger and the steak roll. 🍔🥩 They also have an interesting selection of cocktails and a variety of infused gins. The raspberry one is now definitely a favourite! 😍 Upstairs from the restaurant is a rooftop bar area which I think is great for sundowners. This place is definitely worth a visit! Thank u to H and team for the great service and vibey atmosphere.

When this restaurant just opened we had an unforgettable vegetarian oyster mushroom burger that I still think about today.

Their food is good. Deserves it’s location

This place has a great vibe! Very casual as you order drinks and food yourself at the counter.
The salad bar was awesome and every salad I tried I loved! Burgers good, steak cooked to perfection and even their chips are good!
Great place to go with a big group of friends, no hassle with the bill and you pay as you leave which makes it effortless.

Fantastic vibe for First Thursday’s . Love the concept of card swipes for everything . Steaks are done authentically . Salads were an excellent accompaniment to the sirloin . Service was brisk and speedy despite our table being a large booking for 16, and the restaurant being packed . Rooftop bar fabulous for sunset drinks . Will definitely go back .

I absolutely love the concept of this self-service restaurant. When you arrive you're issued with a card that you will use to swipe for everything you order and then you settle the amount as you leave. I went for the steak which was good. I'm always a big fan when i can see my food being made so this was enjoyable for me. They're able to accomodate a crowd of people and one can also utilize their rooftop area for small functions and they're very willing to meet you halfway to make your experimce enjoyable.

One of my favourtie places in Cape Town
It is almost always such a vibe especially at night and on First Thursdays!

3 words to describe: exciting, different, new

What I had there: EVERYTHING! Salads, steak roll, chicken burger, oyster burger, hake and chips
Rating: Awesome
......................................................................................................................................
Completely unique!

A coffee bar/cafe in the front, restaurant in the back which uses a semi-self service system + a cashless bar experience which is awesome for First Thursdays

(You get a card as you walk in which you pay for later.)

To start enter the salad bar which always has freshly made pastas/starches, veggies and more ...

Then comes the real excitement, an open kitchen ready to make your meal in front of you with a selection of different meat cuts, chicken & hake or a juicy oyster burger for vegetarians - order with heavenly home-made chips!

Make yourself at home here from coffee shop to restaurant to downstairs pop-up dance area/club to rooftop bar - it has it all including H himself, a well know top chef!

If you don't try it you're missing out!

Loved this place with the quirky decor and amaaazing food. We had some burger here - looooooooved the oyster mushroom burger. The service is super friendly and loved the informal open kitchen and bar setup. Devine spot --- will be back very soon!!

What a really interesting, quirky restaurant. Some may not enjoy the ordering process and the limited menu, but it worked for me! The poutine is definitely a must as well as the brisket.
Zanel
A simple menu, very laid back atmosphere and easy ordering system that eliminates the calculating and splitting bill at the end, I had a cheeseburger with half chips and half salad. The selection of salads all looked delicious - making it difficult for the indecisive me - but I was happy with my choice of green beans, butternut and broccoli and coleslaw. Can't remember my plate ever being so full at a restaurant. The burger bun was really yum and so easy to cut through and it felt good to add a healthy option to my meal.
Sam Bell
Quirky and interesting. The brisket was super delicious. Salad was a little pricey. Atmosphere was relaxing at Saturday lunch. Limited beer and wine. Overall enjoyable experience.

I am astounded when I'm able to walk in here. House of H should be booked weeks in advance. Decor is amazing, food incredible and that chilli sauce I wish they would bottle and sell. Staff makes you feel like you are part of the family Hadlay Mclean

Surprisingly amusing decor/products. Charming staff, rustic atmosphere that screams Cape Town.

Not for the tight budgets (the wine, at least) but worth the splurge
Deven Moodley
The food is simply amazing. The eclectic setting, and self service orientation is novel by the city, but the vibe is brilliant. Must try the infused gin concoctions!!! Had the chicken wings with spicy dip. Sweet at first, but then the kick is superb! Will certainly go back to try the steaks.

One of the best Cape Town restaurant experiences I've had in a long time. Everything was impeccable from the food, to the service, to the ambience, to the concept - all of it. Let's start with the decor- it kind of looks like a hoarders paradise or a garage hangout . There is just random stuff everywhere but it's very cool and very hip/grunge. The kitchen is open concept, they grow their own oyster mushrooms - so cool and they have this brilliant card system where you basically go up a select your cut of meat/salads- they scan your card, you go to the bar and order your drink, they scan your card and then when you are on your way out they scan the card to see how much you owe and you pay. - very efficient, love it. So I ordered the oyster mushroom burger with a side of salad (you get to pick 3 out of all of the salads available) and chips. The whole dish was just perfect- mushrooms were so flavorful and basted in heaven, the chips were by far the best chips I've ever had in my life and the salads were all so fresh. My friends ordered the ostrich fillet- in my opinion it was by far the best and most tender and I will 100% be ordering it next time. Another friend got the t-bone which was also incredible but ya the ostrich was the winner for me. I cannot wait to go back for round two.
Gabi
Really cool place and concept. You get a card when you arrive that you use to swipe for your meal at the kitchen and your drinks at the bar and then pay at the door when you leave. The sides were really tasty, beef burger was great but the chicken burger was just alright. Also, I would recommend having a few drinks somewhere else before, as some of the prices at the bar are quite steep. Bit sour about the R40 a shot of gin price not being on display. Got a little fright at the price of my double gin and tonic when I paid the bill.

Last night we visited house of h for the second time.

Very cool concept, vibe and delicious food!

I had a chicken burger which was topped with salsa Verde and came serves on a really tasty bun. I absolutely loved being able to choose a few of their fresh salads to accompany my meal instead of chips, which I never finish. The rest at the table had cheese burgers and steak sarmies which they all loved.

My only criticism is that while the idea of ordering everything on a card is super cool, paying and getting out took forever. I think the system may need a bit of tweak.

Side note- The first time we went was on First Thursday. The food was still great, but I definitely wouldn't recommend it. They have a pop up club in the basement which had such loud bass i almost vibrated off my marmite stool.
Omar Tomasetta
Super tasty burger and chips. I specially liked the green sauce with the patty, perfect combination. Decor is fun and relaxed, a mix of garage scrape yard pieces. Service doesn't exist, you order directly at the kitchen. Prices are fair.

Love House of H. The food is sensational. So many delicious flavours. Best cheese burger I have had in ages! The staff were friendly and made us feel very at home. The decor is very cool. The individual payment system is so clever and convenient. We came for lunch and it was nice and relaxing. I can imagine it gets quite busy / chaotic at night. Cannot wait to come back!!! Love love love!

As this place is on our way to work it was inevitable that we would just have to stop. And I definitely don't regret it! Wecame here twice. The first time I had a flat white. Quite cheap and the perfct morning cup. The other time we had the hot chocolate and omw I was in love. I savoured it the whole way home. It was sweet and the perfect pick me up.
Service was good and the staff are very friendly and helpful!

A unique coffee corner on my way to my office in Pepper street. Very reasonable prices and a bonus that they are open before 7:30. Would definitely go back.

I think the best to sum up my opinion of House of H is that I'm a fan....for life. This place is an absolute gem and if you've not been might I suggest you do so post haste. Just don't go on a Friday because you'll steal my place. The food is simply delicious, the alcohol is fairly priced (PRO TIP: try the Karoo Honey Tequila) and the ambience cannot be beat. Start your evening here and then head out on the town (or just stay here until closing). The vibe is everything you'd expect from a place where you'll find casual bench dining, an open kitchen with massive flaming cookers, and a head chef who has more tats than Jack Sparrow. Quite frankly, if you've not eaten here by now I honestly don't know what the hell you've been doing with your life.
Nicola Cape Town
House of H has quickly climbed to the top of my list of favourite restaurants in Cape Town. The card system is so nifty, makes it incredibly easy to not have to split a bill between a group of people at the end of a meal if each person gets their own card upon arrival. Just don't lose your card because there is a lost card fee! (Easily avoidable by just slipping the lanyard around your neck, but I have seen it happen. ) Great music, great vibe and great staff who are super helpful. The prego roll is exceptional and the salad bar selection is so delicious. Try a buchu g&t you won't regret it 🍹

Such a rad spot with a super cool vibe! Love the randomness of the interior and the rustic feel!

The food was so good too. I had the oyster burger - wow! It was so meaty and delicious! Also love that you can have a selection of salads with it (they were a little bland, but still a nice idea). The other people at the table had the chicken wings with salad, the sirloin steak and the beef burger! The steak was soooo darn good too! Perfectly cooked! Chips were alright, ive had better but I've also definitely had worse! The chili sauce that comes with the chicken wings was also so yum! Kept going back for more - bit of burn and a whole lot of flavour. Didn't try the burger but it was raved about!

Only down side was a couple of the hosts/servers who were not the friendliest. Most staff however were friendly and helpful. Self service was interesting, still deciding how I felt about it. Also would have been nice for someone to tell us how it worked, we were left with a card and no idea what to do with it!

All in all had a really great evening here. Definitely think this will become our standard burger joint and occasional steak treat spot!
Htroux88
The best place for a steak hands down! Original and full of character, this is definitely not your average steakhouse. The food and decor will exceed your expectations! If you are a meat lover you cannot miss House of H 🙌🏽

We went to House of H last night "13 May 2017" and it was great. Service we got was excellent and there whole system's of getting your own food and drinks is a excellent idea. The drinks must just be faster tho, we went with a group of 10-15 people with the restaurant at 90% full. I had a chesse burger with chips but I had an extra patty. The dish overall was great but, next time just don't toast the roll of the burger so much...... it becomes to hard. Overall great place, people, location. Will make a plan in going to try something else again. Well done.

We went to House of H for Restraunt week and were slightly disappointed by the experience. The concept is really awesome and the food was really tasty but the organization in terms of restraunt week seemed a bit lacking! I'll definitely be back but not during restraunt week👎🏻

With so many new restaurants opening up in Cape Town it's refreshing to find a spot that actually adds something new and different. House of H offers good unpretentious food and a fascinating environment that's not too distracting. Meat lovers are in for a treat with what I deem the best slow cooked brisket sandwich in Cape Town. There are also a selection of steaks and burgers if you prefer something a little heftier. Vegetarians are spoilt for choice too with a wide selection of salads. H also offers a delicious vegetarian burger made with oyster mushrooms. I'm not vegetarian but the taste and texture of the oyster mushroom Patty had me hooked. The bar is stocked with small but solid selection of wines and beers. All complimenting the food very well. House of H prides itself on being as eco-friendly as possible. So they recycle many items, have motion sensored bathroom lights and only source the freshest ingredients.

this restaurant located on Loop street has been open for less than a year , but quickly became the place to be for great Food ,or after work drinks etc… in a very enjoyable attic kinda vibe , with big wooden tables and vintage Art around the place , FUN FACT, the oyster mushrooms used for their burgers are growing on the shelf in the main room !
Cptboytjie
The house of H has got it right. Something very different from what you are used to woth a barber and tattoo shop all in one
Love that I can select my own cut of meat amd then select my salad that I want. Awesome parties in the basement every first thursday
Joel Paarwater
One of my preferred first Thursdays stop offs. They have great coffee and the most friendly staff. The in this eclectially decorated and the glass garage at the entrance add to the uniqueness of "House of H". A nice cafe type vibe.
Chris Rafael
Absolutely love House of H - the personality of the restaurant shines through with unique Madame Zingara-esq interior and crazy decor details. I love that they support local produce and that they grow their own oyster mushrooms on the wall. H's personal touch when taking your order is especially great. The rib eye has never disappointed! Table booking essential.
Nicol Miller
Dark, robust interior, and one of the best brisket sandwiches I've ever had! House of H boasts with its fresh and local produce used in all its food...and what's best about it is that it opens early, and closes late. Also, they have great hiphop music on First Thursdays :-)
Lammies
Amazing food and awesome buzz for a great price 🙌 Went once and went back to test it a week later with even better results. Can't wait to go back again for round 3. The Mushroom Burger is insane and all the steaks are as good. The sides could be a dish in their own. You can choose between "Clarkes" style chips or a plate full of fresh salads from the deli counter.

A refreshing new spot in the CBD. House of H impresses by being different. It's a self - service restaurant and bar, with a mix of urban chic and rustic decor. Also seems to entice a variety of people, young and old, local and foreigners. Food focus is on meat (steaks, ribs, brisket), and the quality is fantastic. They have a salad bar to accompany the meat. My rump steak was delicious! And the salads (of which I tasted 3), were all divine! Service is good, they just need to tweak the system a bit to make it more efficient as they did get some orders wrong. But all in all it is a must - visit.
Steven
The committed, customer-service oriented staff will make House of H succeed - attentive to detail, sensitive to even the slightest delays or disruptions, and eager to make guests comfortable and happy.
The product itself is excellent - quality meats, tasty sides.
And the atmosphere is playful, different. I'm excited to see the expansion/parallel venues opening up in the space, and will definitely be back.
Makgalake
I must be honest, my first impression of the restaurant was rather negative, mainly due to the limited menu options. However I was surprised beyond measure. First of all the decor is themed along an old farm with authentic pieces. Their produce is fresh, their meat well aged and they bake their own buns and bread. These all bring about the amazing flavours and taste of their food. I had their rib eye and salad which were very tasty. Their service was above average. I'm definitely returning here the next time I'm in CT cbd.
1st time there and what an experience it was! The food was really good and tasted awesome! The venue is different vibe and such a welcome bunch of staff. The whole experience was great and will deff be back there very soon, now in my top 10 in Cape Town hands down!
Laura
Amazing energy, food, everything is AMAZING. I'd always suggest having the salad option instead of the fries because there are amazing options. Ambience amazing. Can't wait for the rooftop to open!
Robert Kaden
I've been telling everyone who can listen to go to House of H. The cheese burger ranks among some of the best I've had in my life but the salads are what really surprised me: I was ready to ditch my carnivorous ways and go full vegetarian. The portions and generous and everything is tasty. Bonus: Cool, young vibe with a DJ playing a great set.
Alan Tucker
Wow wow wow. 1st visit here and will be back very soon. Rustic and authentic. Great concept of self service. Excellent staff. Very vibey. Limited menu. Excellent quality food. Superb steaks. Casual dining at its best.
Matthew Larkam
Great concept with the self service but the waiter or staff there are a bit too "buddy buddy" for a professional environment. Food was average....steak was a bit under for med rare and lacked the WOW factor.
Jessica Stromin
I totally love this place. Great concept, vibe and food! Been here twice - had the rib eye the first time and the cheeseburger the second time, both with half and half salad and chips (awesome value). The food is seriously good and portions are very decent. The self-service system works well, making it the perfect spot for dinner with a big group of friends!
Janet
Really great place! Can't wait for the roof top bar to open !! My only disappointment is the very limited wine list. Love the individual attention from Hendrix and the meat is top quality and prepared to perfection!!
Ashish Sewgoolam
Very trendy new spot in town with cool decor and a unique service style to SA that I'm noticing catch on. When you enter you're given a card and go to the bar or deli, order and swipe. You settle on exit and avoid too long queues at the bar and split bill debates.
Ended up visiting twice in my 3 day stay in town and it was busy both days.
Inside is quite small and grungy looking, long wooden tables with a wooden theme carried through along with a selection of fresh veg by the deli which was unique, haven't seen anything like this in SA before which is a good thing.
Very hands on owner and friendly and attentive bar manager add to the overall experience.
Didn't get a chance to eat as only popped by for drinks.
Allan Moita
A very welcome new venue to the CBD. The system for ordering is maybe a little complicated and I can see a busy service getting quite crowded at the selection area. I have no doubt that in l time this will be resolved though.

The decor is very different. Rustic is the best way I can describe it. When arriving, you feel like you have arrived at someone's house. It's very comfortable.

The food selection is basic, mostly meat options. The meat is on display so you can see what you are ordering. What we ate was very well aged and cooked very well. Next time I will ask to have it cooked without barbecue basting.
When the meat is ready, you are invited to select you side dishes. The salad variety was really outstanding! They were fridge cold though, not the way I prefer but again that's my preference.

The waiter was very helpful and we were invited in the warmest fashion.

Looking forward to my next visit.
Cynthia
Totally different spin on your typical restaurant experience which makes it that much more fun and interesting. You get to pick the your dish and actually see the fresh ingredients. Well done to these guys on a great new hot spot. And there's shrooms on growing out the wall 😃
Didi Tsitsi
Very relaxed and informal, perfect atmosphere for an after work/varsity supper. Sirloin was done to perfection and the vast array of salads was impressive to say the least! H himself was great, explaining how he came up with the idea and was generally open to some great chats. Definitely coming back again!
Guy Blackhurst
I visited House of H on a very busy First Thursdays. They were hosting a party at the time so the place was packed. It was a bit of a struggle to find a seat at the communal tables, but fortunately we were able to take a reserved spot from a no-show. The experience was a bit chaotic given the circumstances. Regardless, we were explained how everything worked and went about our business in the self-service restaurant. As one would expect, there is not a hugely varied menu. A couple meat options and a grown-on-site Oyster Mushroom 'Burger'. The salad bar, however, is great and offers quite a number of exciting options. We both ordered the sirloin from H himself, who cut a very generous portion from a beautiful large slab of meat. I had the option of chips or salad with my meal. A mere seven minutes later the food was ready. The meat was delicious and served with a Salsa Verde sauce which paired very well. There is little to no effort in presentation of the food, but I think that is quite fitting given the unpretentious vibe of the place. Although I've only been to House of H once, I feel as though it's somewhere that allows for every visit to be quite different. I will definitely be back in the near future.
Jessy Lipperts
Haven't eaten yet but we were taken on a small tour by the host who told us all kinds of fabulous things about this place where mushrooms grow on the wall and all is 100% organic. Will be back for food!
Andrea Van Tonder
Recently popped in to see a friend and I was amazed. The atmosphere is unlike any other place in Cape Town. In a world full of hipster joints and faux gourmet shops, House of H is a category all in its own. The decor is a whimsical trip back in time with giant marmite bottles, antiques and modern touches. The setup is so easy. Simply get a card when you walk in, browse the salad bar, admire the steaks on display in the open kitchen and order a coffee or drink from the bar. All your orders are done directly to the chef or barman and all you need to do is swipe your card. Imagine that, being able to tell the chef exactly how you'd like your steak and having the privilege to watch him prepare it. Not only is this the perfect place to grab a fresh bite, you can even stock up on some sauces to take home. While not having a waiter or menu is new, it is simply amazing to make your own meal. I had the most incredible sirloin with a bevy of salads - all orders come with unlimited salad. Just load up your plate. Healthy and decadent at the same time. Go go go check out House of H. There is simply no other place like it if you enjoy good food, relaxed vibes and friendly faces with your lunch.

Now this is a gem. Setting , brilliant. Food is on another level! Filling and super awesome!
Their brisket comes highly recommended . Will give it a 12/10 yes , if you eat it then tell me again. Will definitely visit the place soon. So impressed and there will be many more additions.

Came here as our friend who knows the owner recommended it. What an amazing atmosphere and great food. I love the concept of getting your own card so you pay your own bill! When there is a big crowd this really comes in handy! The chef takes your food order and he is so helpful if you are struggling to decide on what to eat. It really just has a great vibe where you can go chill and have good food!
