Review Beluga Cape Town - Cape Town Central

Steven Manuel
We had a staff lunch at Beluga yesterday. Not gonna lie, got a but lost trying to find the place. Buuuuut, once you know, you know. The restaurant looks top class, definitely a great spot for a variety of events. The view out over the ocean is relaxing or terrifying depending on how you feel about the water. The staff are super friendly and helpful, good service is hard to come by these days, always enjoyable to experience it. The food tastes great. I only had a couple of issues. My steak was over done by quite a bit. But I was starving so I ate it anyway, could NOT wait for another one without getting hangry. If you aren't a steak person this won't bother you... But I am đŸ„Č Aaaaaand I think they forgot about my dessert order. I ordered the Creme Brulee and had to ask about it after everyone was almost done with their desserts. It was decent. Flavour good, but the texture was powdery. I'm still on the hunt for a fantastic Creme Brulee since my favourite place to get them closed... Years ago. Overall it was a great experience. Would definitely go again.

Wow!👌 thank you, Beluga. We had our year-end function yesterday with you guys, and what an amazing experience. Firstly, thank you to our amazing waiter, Tony, for making sure everything was always filled and the spectacular service and for going the exta mile in helping me get something special I ordered. Then i also want to say thank you to Jarod, the manager, as your meticulous care did not go unnoticed. As soon as i was just waiting or standing somewhere waiting even if it was just for a few seconds Jarod was there to hear if there is anything that he could assist me with, even if i was just waiting for a colleague. He has such a nice nature and is fantastic in his job. I also want to thank the 2 beautiful hostesses Tracy and Samantha for greeting and seeing us with great smiles and assistance. Last but not least, thank you, tie the amazing chefs for the food it was out of this world!!!! Beluga, you can be proud. 👏 Keep it up!!! And we will see you on Chrismans cannot wait to see what is in store for us!!!!!!

Been a while since I went to Beluga since they moved to the new location, overlooking the port. I was surprised to find that the food was just as good as before the move. The sushi special is 50% off from 16:00 - 18:00, however was told that platters are only R100 off the original price after the order was placed. The sashimi was really good. The chocolate beignets were amazing as usual, but I miss the jug of butterscotch caramel as the drizzle on the plate is not to balance out the white chocolate.

Absolutely beautiful the view the service the atmosphere and just everything about Beluga is amazing the Shusi is Amazing the Steak is amazing the Fish is amazing and most of all their drinks is also amazing 👏. Highly recommend if you are in the area. Our waiter was amazing he was so professional #loveit

Really great food and atmosphere. Went over the weekend and was a bit loud to have a conversation, around 85 to 90dB and it peaked just over 90dB later in the night. So potentially one should figure out if there is a live band if you want to have a chat. The live band was great. Service is rapid and staff was friendly. Highly recommend. Food isn’t exactly cheap, but that’s expected. At night the drive towards the entrance could seem confusing, from the outside it appears as though it’s the wrong place, but just follow Google maps. The parking itself is well lit. It’s a paid parking using a card and ticket machine.

It's literally the best steak I've ever had ! It melted in my mouth, absolutely devineđŸ€€đŸ‘Œ we had a 3 course meal, the starters were amazing and the deserts were to die for. Beluga is a must visit and definitely worth every penny. The atmosphere is amazing with live music and wine tasting on Saturdays. They have the best cocktails and an endless list of whiskeys and rums. This is definitely one of Capetowns TOP restaurants.

Last minute decision to go to Beluga for dinner in CBD after Decorex yesterday. Decided to visit Beluga despite some mixed reviews I have seen online. I want to keep this brief so here it goes in point form
 1. Restaurant looks really good and the view out on the harbour is cool 2. Service was excellent from all staff 3. Opted for the 3 course set menu. I had chicken livers as a starter which was delicious. 200g fillet for main which was perfectly cooked and orange cake for dessert which had an intense orange flavour which I loved. 4. Cocktails are very well priced and pack a punch. 5. They have a whisky and cigar lounge which is well stocked with over 130 whiskies as well as whisky lockers. As a whisky lover and collector I love this. 6. Every Saturday they have a different wine farm presenting their wines and you are able to purchase them at a small markup (will be going for this at some point) 7. One of the managers asked if we were celebrating anything special to which we replied yes and she did a small gesture which just added the cherry on top. Really great experience which I appreciate.

Beluga is a very nice restaurant. The service is impeccable, and the food is absolutely divine. I only have one complaint: the music was so incredibly loud that it made conversation very difficult. We were a big group of 10 at a large table, which already made talking difficult, and we had to shout to be heard above the music. I just feel it's not necessary for it to be so loud that diners can't hold a conversation. Otherwise very satisfied with everything else.

The old Beluga was my absolute favorite place to have sushi and cocktails for many, many years. Unfortunately, I don't quite feel that the new Beluga had the same standard of quality sushi or service as the old one. The sushi we had was good, but it wasn't anything I'd rave about. I also miss the old Beluga sushi plates / platters, which aren't presented on the new menus. We went for lunch in the week, and the restaurant wasn't particularly busy, but our waitress seemed distracted, and we didn't feel she was attentive. I do like the venue though, and the restaurant is beautifully decorated. I will be back to try again.

A lovely venue, sophisticated restaurant, excellent service from Faith, eclectic menu ..... Sadly, they had no sirloin steak even though it was on the menu. Opted for salmon, which was delcious. Food presentation creative. Unfortunately, and out of the control of the restaurateur, they were loading a ship (not a cruise liner) that caused a lot of noise from the engine's droning. I will definitely return, and yes, I do recommend a visit. However, if you want a quiet meal, enquire if any ships are being loaded before visiting. Definitely my new favourite restaurant for sushi. Give it a try.

Had a lovely waitress last time ! Very friendly man there other times as well. Divine Dessert and too die for cocktails đŸč Loved the freshed sushi 🍣

Their sushi specials and quality is sublime. Their dim sum specials and cocktail specials amazing. And the ambience is great too

If you're into Sushi and Cocktails, look no further. <br/><br/>I went to Beluga with a group of friends while visiting Cpt, and we left satisfied. <br/>For starters we had the Pot stickers and Wontons, I am yet to find a place in Joburg that makes them just as good as those ones. <br/>We followed with a variety of Sushi, however the Bam Bam roll and Daniels crisp stood out for me. <br/><br/>The cocktails we actually good... they were worth the money.

I attended birthday celebrations and how wonderful that children as well as adults were catered for. The portions served to the children were big and enjoyed immensely. My food was delicious. Staff are friendly and very helpful. A wonderful evening out.

AMAZING!! The kingklip and buttered mash was probably the most amazing meal I had in CPT this far. The Beignet was so melt in your mouth!
Mariposa
Good sushi, and nice server. However, the manager, Johan, was awful. The previous manager, Lawrence, did a much better job to ensure the enjoyment of his guests

This is one of my favourite restaurants in Cape Town. I cannot visit Cape Town and never eat here. The Crayfish was beyond my expectation👏👏👏👏.<br/><br/>My family love the seafood here. Always my first recommendation.<br/><br/>

I used to frequent beluga for years for their sushi as I live very close to the restaurant, but this last experience with their sushi has traumatized me and would also be my last experience with Beluga. I ordered what I believe was a blue plate sushi platter. The first piece of sushi I ate was a California roll which was fine and then I had a salmon rose which as I chewed it gave off the most PUNGENT STENCH AND TASTE, the raw fish was BEYOND expired and it took everything in me to not vomit on the table there and there. I told the waiter who did not believe me and hesitated to bring the manager who took our plate away and asked if we’d like another. Needless to say I declined his offer and am never going back. How this established restaurant can offer not even just unfresh but EXPIRED AND PUNGENT RAW FISH is beyond me. Thanks for the free food poisoning Beluga!

We had our date night at Beluga last night and it was really amazing.<br/><br/>The staff and waiters are very friendly and attentive.<br/><br/>I thoroughly enjoyed my Beef Wellington, it was cooked to perfection. My dessert was also quite delicious so compliments to the chef.<br/><br/>We did however not enjoy the chocolate sundae as it was completely frozen and basically in edible which was a bummer.<br/><br/>Other than that mishap, I had a great night and would definitely recommend this restaurant to everyone 🙌
Gabriella_21
Excellent service from all the staff. Delicious food. The staff were very helpful. Would definitely come back for the amazing sushi and dessert.

Don’t go for the Sirloin, not the best quality. My friends from Switzerland had the Springbok and Durban Curry – both was really tasteful and aromatic. Service was good.
Ilinda Du Preez
Excellent service! Despite being very busy it was a wonderful experience. Seafood platter delicious and the sushi great value for money.<br/>One of the best creme brulee I've had. Well worth a visit.

Given how good their food can be we have this restaurant a second chance. What a mistake. A casual dinner for 7 took 3 hours. No managerial supervision left a junior waitress to fend for herself when her kitchen et al had clearly let her down. Second time we’d experienced a similarly poor dining experience here. Thankfully with Ct being the culinary capital of SA we will be going elsewhere in future. AVOID!!!!!

Very underwhelmed by the food from my first experience at Beluga. This is not a good example of fine dining. I was keen to try out this restaurant, but disappointed at the lackluster service and bland food. The Baby Calamari was over cooked and tasteless. My partner had the Beef Wellington which had some flavor but we had to beg for the sides. You have a better chance of getting tasty seafood at Ocean Basket than here at Beluga. If you’re into the Greenpoint ambiance alone, then this is the place for you. If you’re on the lookout for good food, perhaps give this place a miss. Not worth the hassle or money...

Fabulous meal and amazing atmosphere. We could not have enjoyed it anymore. The chicken salad starter was Devine and all of our party loved their meal. <br/><br/>

I attended this restaurant recently for a friend’s birthday celebration. I ordered the seafood linguine. Unfortunately it did not live up to my expectations. The dish required a bit more seasoning but looked lovely in presentation. The service was also a bit slow. However we were quite a big table. Personally I was underwhelmed and felt that the food did not match the price.

Superb seafood! 3 of us shared some sushi, dim sum, a platter for 2 (it was quite big), and 2 desserts. It was very filling. In fact, I think the platter for 2 might be too much for 2 people to eat. The platter was on special at the time we ate it, (R545, now R745), and consists of 2 crayfish tails, 2 langoustines, prawns, fish, calamari, mussels, chips and rice. Everything tasted great and was cooked to perfection. Sushi and dim sum were also excellent, especially the rice-free red-roof rolls (tuna) and one of the seafood dumplings (forgot what they were called). Desserts were rich and decadent, possibly a bit too sweet for some people. Service was also great despite the restaurant being quite busy. Be sure to come between 12 to 6 pm so you can order some sushi, dim sum and cocktails at reduced prices.

I had my first sushi experience at this very restaurant and I am now hooked 😍😍 Also their service and scenery is something I’ve never seen before. Absolutely loved my experience at Beluga 💗

Beluga has very nice ambience for anyone going out as a group and their cocktails are delicious. <br/>The kingklip was over cooked and the pasta was a bit bland. The sushi was okay. Overall the culinary experience itself was average but not disappointing. The service was very friendly and efficient.
Stacey Lee English
Friendly staff. Received a nice gift as well. Two thumbs up & will definitely return. Already telling people about my experience. Keep up the great work guys.

We sat outside and the ambience was amazing. Their king prawns were full of flavour. Definitely satisfied my prawn cravings. The server was very polite and friendly. Was readily available too e en though the place was almost packed

Stunning place for a Saturday afternoon. They had a live band playing last Saturday and it was fantastic! We sat outside, enjoyed some Sauv Blanc and had a great lunch. Our waiter was attentive and had a great personality, making our experience even better. I had vegan sushi, which was outstanding!! Such a treat knowing that there is somewhere vegans can go for that authentic sushi taste. My friend had Vietnamese rolls and the seafood linguine, both equally delicious. Overall we had a fab time and will be returning, possibly every Saturday for the rest of the year

Went here for a business dinner. Food was good. Salmon was excellent and so was the Tuna., Chilli Fish was average. Starter Miso Soup was good and the tempura seemed to be well liked by all as well as the sushi. The service was good and Prices are on the high side. The drinks menu is extensive catering for every possible taste.

What a stunning place! Went for a friend’s birthday celebration with a group of friends. Service was great. Made it just in time for the 12am-6pm specials. What a bargain. Good value for great food! Sushi sushi sushi! Absolutely loved it there. Their glasses of wine are also the nicest and a very good portion too! Make your way there for a lekker experience

Having never have been to Beluga before, we took my boyfriend's birthday as the opportunity to get some amazing sushi and cocktails. They have a special menu on Sundays and one, from 12-4 on weekdays,I think. I had heard amazing things about it, so I was really keen to see what all the fuss was about!<br/><br/>However, what I had heard and my own experience did not match up. First off, the service left much to be desired. The waiter was incredibly slow and had a bit of an attitude (I think it was because we were quite a big table but that shouldn't have resulted in bad service). Furthermore, the food took forever and a day to come! and we were already starving by the time we had placed our food orders. <br/><br/>However, when it finally arrived, it was incredibly delicious and left you wanting more. The dim sum was disappointing though as there were only 3 pieces and the problem is that the dim sum is terribly addictive (and I felt a bit of a rip off, considering the price). The drinks and cocktails were really really good, I had a lovely pink gin martini which was out of this world and we had the boujeest jagerbombs ever!<br/><br/>The ambiance is generally quite nice there, especially if you sit inside. It gives off "First Date" or rather lends itself to a romantic evening for two!<br/><br/>ALL in all, I would recommend that you try it out, cause I might have just been visiting on a bad day!
Steven Ikin
Well the food wasn’t bad, so I’ll give them that. But the service was non-existent. Serious lack of management supervision. We had to virtually beg for some attention. I think we saw 7 different waitrons at our table. In fact, pathetic. Couldn’t tell you who the waiter was. In times gone by this restaurant was packed with people. Now, not so! A fall from grace I must say! A shame, really

It is a very good place to be at and nice atmosphere as well. I didn't like the starter which was calamari it was very Salty but okay, The mussels didn't taste that good as well. Otherwise nice friendly staff and a beautiful decor.

We visited Beluga on a quiet Friday winters night, the reason why I am saying this, the resturant was not busy... but still we received slow service and the waitress was not friendly. I also had to look for the waitress when I needed something which was rather unpleasant. Sushi and Dim Sum quality was great, but if you had to ask me... for this price class there are better places to eat Sushi at in Cape Town.
Kev0's Food Adventures!
A great place to have sushi if you’re in Green Point, the traditional sushi and deep fried sushi was both really good. The duck dumplings are a must try! Service was on point.
Kelvin Vincent
I have been very disappointed with belugas service. They must be understaffed or have some lack of planning. 25 minutes after ordering a bottle of wine is a bit too much of a wait for me and then to have the ice glass brought to you with a spoon that looked like it came out of someone's dessert bowl is just not on. As far as the food goes the sushi is great and good quality and they do an amazing teriyaki sauce but that's about all I enjoyed.
Nicholas_Jon_D
Beluga has had a little update on their menu, but I am pleased to say that the food and service are still good and it’s still one of my fav sushi spots in Cape Town.
Fried Onion
A consistently good restaurant. Warm welcome, efficient but unobtrusive service, and a great ambience. She had seared crusted tuna and I a fillet steak, both of which were excellent. The steak was prepared sous vide and finished in the pan, and resulted in arguably the best steak I have had in Cape Town. <br/><br/>One small criticism- the menu showed both dishes as coming complete with vegetables, potato croquettes, salsa etc. Technically that was accurate, but the quantities of each were tiny, and would have been more at home on a plate of nouvelle cuisine. <br/><br/>The wine list is outstanding, if marginally pricy. Overall a most satisfying meal, and we will definitely be back.
Raeesah Ebrahim
I feel as their sushi quality has been downgraded however they’re have price sushi is always a win for the price and amount is definitely value for money if you must try something on the menu it definitely has to be the prawn wontons
Stuart M
This place never disappoints in terms of its cuisine.<br/>Happened to visit on a Sunday and managed to get the half price special comprising of select sushi, dim sum and cocktails.<br/><br/>The service was immaculate.<br/><br/>Highly recommended establishment for a truly fine dining experience
Popsi
Big props to Beluga for having so many vegan sushi dishes on their menu and for clear marking them as such. Even bigger props for serving them with vegan mayo! We had a selection of the vegan sushi and it was all delicious. <br/><br/>Service is good, and the outdoor area is great in summer, with lots of shade. The cocktails are yummy too and they have a specials menu from 12-6pm. Definitely worth a visit.
Sam Corcoran
Couldn’t ask for better vegan sushi! Tofu tempura with vegan mayo. It was really delicious and always friendly service. I find the brick courtyard that Beluga is situated in really charming.
Danielle Janse Van Rensburg
I’ve been a regular to Beluga over the last 3 years. They have had fantastic cocktails, sushi and a great half price special. My husband, a friend and I decided to go for our usually sushi and cocktail special to be surprised by a “new menu”. The Restutant is under new ownership/ management and everything that was great about the Restutant has changed. Their cocktails are substandard and I think they have changed their sushi chef. I was extremely disappointed and won’t be returning.
Alex Ottley
An absolute gem! Service is top notch, and food is out of this world! Especially their sushi. Ambience is amazing, with a real summer feel to it. Love this place!
Rish
Welcomed by friendly staff to a cosy environment with impeccable service. The sushi and oysters were on special yet they never sacrificed the top-notch quality of it. I had a Asian chicken salad that was wonderful and a friend had the calamari with rice and couldn't fault it. I'll come here again any time.
Nina
Best sushi in town! My absolute favourite place to have dinner at👌<br/>Be sure to catch their half price special for some good value for money sushi!<br/>
Anneri Du Plessis
Totally unacceptable service!! Sauces of steaks only arrived after we received our food, which was already cold by that time. The manager kept on telling us he will get back to us but came with no results. All in all - bad service, pathetic management and an overall bad experience. Expected a lot more from a restaurant like this
Niccolo Passerin
Highly disappointed! used to come on Sundays for half price sushi and cocktails they have changed the menu and now you can only get selected sushi and cocktails thus your options are very limited and the quality of the sushi has become subpar
Monette Bezuidenhout
The service is good and the decor is elegant. Went one Sunday and there was a live orchestra. The food is not bad but it’s quite expensive for what you get. They have some specials but I wouldn’t recommend the Sunday sushi special.
Dhanshree Bramdav
This has to be my favorite restaurant in Cape Town. They serve the best dim sum and don't even mention the sushi. The waiter recommended the snow dragon and it was a must have. Absolutely delicious. Great vibe, excellent food and friendly staff
Lauren Laa Hebbs
Love this restaurant! The sushi, dim sum and cocktails are always amazing! The sashimi salad is my fav ❀ highly recommend it when you feel like some good reasonably priced sushi and cocktails 👌
Amy Chen
Last Saturday I had the 2 course lunch special. Ordered the duck and GOT FOOD POISONING that lasted 4 days. Pretty shitty, not pun intended. <br/>Not only that, when I phoned the restaurant to complain, the manager said he'd investigate and call me back. But I haven't heard from them since. <br/>Honestly shocking.
Lauren Angela Jeffrey
Beluga ❀<br/>As a regular here I can honestly say I don't think I've had a single bad experience. The setting is wonderful, the service is fantastic, and the food is outstanding. Every time. My favorite is the platinum blonde sushi platter but really everything I've tried has been yummy!
Aletha Jeftha
Update: been back a few times now and it’s just not the same anymore...it’s been rather disappointing on all occasions. <br/><br/>Review 1: Can we just please address their desserts... as in all of them! Special mention to the Creme Brulee (probably on par with what you would find in a fine establishment in Paris) and the Lemon Posset. I would much rather stuff my face with food than sweets, but this is defintely the one place that I would do dessert first (to ensure there is room) and mains there after. <br/><br/>Beluga also has all round good sushi (similar deal as their sister restaurant - Sevruga), but they defintely do the seasonal menu's better. Special mention to the ostrich (stay away from the gnocchi. The line fish and steaks can also be a hit or miss). <br/><br/>The ambiance is amazing, service is great, complimentary bread is devilishly delicious... it's one of my favourite places.
Joash Narainsamy
The daytime lunch and early evening sushi and dim sum specials are fantastic and great value for money. I highly recommend their sushi platter for two and letting your eye wander over the dim sum menu.
Bame Modungwa
Beluga is always good. I love their sushi and dim sum special so often come on Sundays though they run it everyday. Their mains are good, not great so a little over priced but great service, great ambience and always happy to return.
Darryn
I have been to Beluga a few times and Beluga is currently my "go to" for sushi of great quality. There's always a romantic atmosphere and I have never had bad experience with service either.
Liezel Johnson
Best of the best! You can never go wrong at this place, food are out of this world! Prices are cheaper than the Spur for a 3 course meal. What more do want?!
Jenisha Govender
The sushi special is good value for money. Fresh seafood and quenching cocktails. Service from our waiter was friendly and quick. He made sure our drinks weren't empty the whole night. Highly recommend!
Asher Weinsein
As far as Sunday shushi specials go, Beluga makes for great place to ease out of the weekend.<br/><br/>With sushi, more is actually less. Especially when it's wrapped in cucumber. The volcano roles weren't as nice as I thought they'd be. It feels like you're eating a soft cucumber (but hey, maybe that's just me).<br/><br/>Next time I'll keep it simple and go for that seared tuna salad on my right instead. It comes with a peanut dressing, the kind you could put on anything.<br/>
Liani
I've been to Beluga a few time and I've never had a bad experience.<br/><br/>They have a winter menu, 2 or 3 course - good value for money, delicious options and big portions.<br/>And they still have their half price sushi, dim sum & cocktails special running. <br/><br/>They serve soft warm bread as an appetizer.<br/><br/>My brother took the 2 course meal: calamari starter and lamb gnocchi as his main. He really enjoyed his meal.<br/><br/>I took a side of roasted vegetables and the vegetarian californian rolls. It was so yummy, kept eating slower because I didn't want my food to finish. The rolls were a decent size. The wasabi has a proper bite.<br/><br/>The winter menu does have vegetarian/vegan option, I just didn't feel for that much food.<br/><br/>The service was outstanding. Everyone is friendly. Food is well-timed. The waiter is always around and constantly made sure we were fine without being overbearing. The manager also makes his rounds. <br/><br/>The prices are on the higher side when ordering something other than the specials. But the service, food and surroundings are worth it. <br/><br/>We arrived at a good time, around 12:30, soon after the restaurant was full. Not sure if they take bookings, but probably best to book. <br/><br/>If you go on my recommendation, I do hope you have a satisfying experience. <br/>
Khanya Kay Nondabula
What made the whole experience enjoyable was the service. The sushi is really fresh and the dim sum was delectable. I also had a cranberry Long Island which just had the best balance of flavours, it wasn't bitter at all. The best part was all the items we had ordered were discounted by 50% , what a steal! I'm definitely returning here soon.
Nuno Nunes
Excellent Sushi. Service was a lil bit sloppy, slow and with some errors. Despite that...great dinner. I strongly recomend some of the fusion sushi.
Akhona Khumalo
I really wanted to love this place seeing as though I'm obsessed with the Durban branch I thought the Cape Town branch would be no different- Total opposite I was quite disappointed. The summer menu is a great option if you want to try a variety of foods, two course for R135 or the three course meal for R185. The food was extremely underwhelming from the sushi to the dessert I've had better, the only thing that made my night bearable were my friends. I was surprised at how busy this place was for a Tuesday night. Definitely not rushing back here.
Rayne Alexander
Lovely restaurant and setting. The lighting is a bit low down though, I struggled to see my dinner date! The food was AMAZING. She ordered Beef Wellington which tasted to die for and I ordered an assortment of Dim Sum and Asian tapas. When the bill arrived, I was so pleasently surprised to see all the Asian baskets were 50% off! I think this is part of a Monday special.
Tsenge
Don't feel the place lived up to the hype. Had heard so much about the restaurant and it was a bit of a let down. The venue is great with great ambience however the wait for our food was really long and we weren't even that big a table. When my food came, my order was wrong and when the right order eventually came the food wasn't that flavour filled and didn't look so appealing (lamb gnocchi). My friends order was also not complete as she didn't receive all that she ordered and what she did get she said didn't taste that good.<br/><br/>Very average experience of which the price is much more than average.....Don't think I'd return any time soon.
Nqobile Msibi
This place is highly overrated. I've been there on two separate occasions and I just cannot understand how they justify how much they charge for the food that they serve. The service is nice, I haven't found myself having to wait ages for a drink or attention which is a bonus. I've tried the Summer menu every time I've been there and the highlight has always been the dessert. I was hoping to try out the prawn wonton the last time I went there but it was already sold out at 6 in the evening. The lamb gnocchi I had was not seasoned well but the calamari starter was good.
Nabeelah Valley
I'm not really a sushi fan, but the Tuna Crunch was amazing! Their sushi is great, and the atmosphere as well. I had the chocolate truffle cake which was nice. A bit too sweet for me. (I'd definitely recommend to share it as it is quite big, unless you have a sweet tooth!)
Uressa Chetty
Always love going for half price sushi and cocktails as the sushi is really gourmet and reasonably priced. We opted for the volcano rolls and snow dragon which were yummy and a generous portion too. But all their sushi is great. Although dessert is always my favourite part because of the white chocolate beignets. The butterscotch sauce is to die for!

***Update 2***<br/><br/>Tonight I get to update my review of Beluga to include some of their plated items. In the past Beluga has been my go to place for quality sushi and of course the “Best Piña Colada in Cape Town” *as deemed by me and an expert panel of judges including me, me and me. Those few other souls who’s obsession for this tropical wonder drink that makes you want to dance in a grass skirt and do the hula have agreed heavily with my crowning of said best Piña Colada - (one might be a hipster on weekends), so my claim must be true.<br/><br/>In all seriously tonight I’m having a go at their Winter Menu. Cocktails to start off with - bonus because it is before 7 so these puppies are 50% off. I’m still happy to say Beluga has the best Piña Colada in Cape Town - Nothing compares - period. Today I tasted their Strawberry Daiquiri and it rates one of the better ones I’ve had but it requires more of a strawberry punch for me to endorse it full tilt. What I do like is that the frozen cocktails here have a consistent texture and taste from top to bottom. Keep up the good cocktails. <br/><br/>For starters I had the Duck Liver Creme BrĂ»lĂ©e - First off the satisfying crack of perfectly caramelized sugar.... yes. Underneath ... just a wonderful smooth, creamy and delicately spiced duck custard/pĂątĂ©. The sweetness of the caramelized sugar pairs exceptionally well with the liver. The added flavor of the marmalade on the side balances this starter out lovely. I was incredibly chuffed with this dish. Would order in again in a heartbeat. <br/><br/>The second starter I got to sample was the Beef Carpaccio. The balance of flavors on this plate was a bit off as there was a bit too much Parmesan (who complains about too much Parmesan right ?)... in all seriousness since it’s aged you require a lot less and as much as I loved it, objectively speaking the balance would be achieved with slightly less. I would have preferred to dress the dish my self by adding my desired amount of lemon juice and balsamic. The dish used mixed herbs to compliment the meat but I haven’t developed an appreciation for any other herb on carpaccio besides a good amount of freshly chopped parsley. I would say this boils down to a personal preference thing. <br/><br/>Mains - Angry Chicken Curry - why does it have to be angry though ? I picked this dish based on the praise it was given in reviews gone by and figured it would be the best place to start. The chicken is very tender and the curry is flavorsome. The spicing isn’t bold and in your face but it definitely has some bite. The aromatic veggie rice works well for the dish. It’s a solid chicken curry, still don’t know why it’s angry though. <br/><br/>The second main I was able to sample was the Lamb Gnocchi- Wow! This is the main meal show stopper. The sauce and the lamb are incredible. The rich but delicate flavors all come through and is remarkable. I like that the sauce is a bit on the thicker side so my gnocchi was well coated in the sauce but the gnocchi isn’t home made. That said its okay by me, unless you can do homemade gnocchi spot on don’t venture there. I liked that the dish had trimmed lamb cuts. Lamb dishes often have a tendecay to leave that film on the roof of your mouth.<br/><br/>For dessert I had the Lemon Posset. What a fail - the icicle texture doesn’t play nice in the mouth. The dessert is lost to me as I didn’t appreciate it or want to finish it. The candied lemon rind is nice though. A decent Lemon Posset should deliver a good Balance of sweet-tart flavor, be thick and have a lush consistency. Instead the cream mixture split a bit and with freezing didn’t help as the water forms Ice shards. There should also be a strong complex lemon finish which can be achieved from letting the zest steep in the cream mixture while cooking. The magic would’ve have been a crĂšme brĂ»lĂ©e type consistency with enough bright-tart flavor to balance the richness of the cream. This was a miss on all fronts please remove this dessert from your menu or reconsider the recipe used. It is dropping the ball on the dessert front. <br/><br/>The white chocolate desert was a bit better. The idea of having a dough shell with oozy white chocolate center (milky bar) is good - but the vetkoek dough isn’t the right dough for this I think. The aftertaste of the oil in the dough isn’t a great mix with the white chocolate and the texture doesn’t contrast enough to appreciate the two ideas. A much crisper shell would make this a very interesting experience. The homemade butterscotch / toffee is nice but the sugar hasn’t been dissolved completely in the sauce. This dessert needs something else to pep it up. Rosemary and white chocolate pair well and would add a interesting spin ? The ice cream is the stock standard variety and since moving to CPT it just doesn’t cut it anymore especially with so many places opening your mind to really good homemade ice cream. <br/><br/>My waiter did explain to the manager about the sad Posset and he missioned off into the kitchen but didn’t come to find out more from me which is fine I guess but not really addressing the issue. I’m not one to ask for the kitchen to redo stuff as I give reviews based on the experience provided not demanded or redone. It would have been a nice gesture to have it knocked off the bill at any rate or some redemption other than extra jelly beans with the bill.<br/><br/>No pictures unfortunately the low light atmosphere doesn’t do the food justice. If you come here for anything come for the Piña colada. Like seriously no joke. Every time I have been I've had a sushi platter of some derivative and I've always left happy and satisfied. The fish is fresh the rice perfectly cooked and the avo buttery and soft. No complaints !! I have yet to sample other meals off the menu but why change a winning combo?

Love this place. Been here a couple of times. They always have specials running. Love their sushi-tuna crunch, salmon roses, carin's roll (half price special made it even better). Love their mushroom gnocchi just divine. Also had the Crispy Chili Fish it tastes good but can get bored quite easily. Very big portion size in general so it's ideal for sharing the plates. We also had the white chocolate beignets (for sweet toothed). They have summer and winter specials (2 or 3 course). Service is very good. Plenty of seating indoors and outdoors but make a reservation during the festive periods. They also have a small cozy attic for the lovebirds to have a semi-private meal together. Recommended.

Still one of my top 3 sushi spots to go to in Cape Town. Was a trend setter and the place to be. Great location, perfect ambiance. Was very impressed. It does get busy from time to time. Need to go again sometime.

Went for the half price sushi special that is everyday from 12-7pm. Even being half price, the sushi was still pricey, averaging R75 for 8 pieces. I really enjoyed the Samurai rolls and creamy prawn. They always really full on weekends so I would recommend making a reservation.

So Beluga has definitely regressed through the years. As a frequent patron over the years, sadly standards have slipped. Especially the quality of the sushi. Once amongst the best in Cape Town our sushi last night was tired and certainly not fresh. The rice on the rolls disintegrated when dipped into the soya sauce. A very clear indication of sub standard rice.<br/>We tried to order dim sum but alas the cupboard was bare! Some vague excuse about revamping the menu....<br/>So went for duck honey ginger pot stickers. Texture was chewy and frankly bland.<br/>For mains we decided on the black pate special- salmon roses, seared tuna, salmon sashimi, rainbow rolls, California rolls, tuna and salmon nigiri. Was ok but nothing like the past offerings I had experienced there.<br/>We shared. Fleur de Cap Cab Sav 2014 at R 212.<br/>Service was ok.<br/>But in the final summary- Beluga has succumbed to the Cape Town tourist trap syndrome i.e Patrons are only here once so let's not worry about repeat business.<br/>That was my last visit to Beluga.

If you like quality food, friendly staff and good wine... you cant go wrong. Tried the #summermenu and the two course meal was perfect. The #vegsushi option was nice for me and was really tasteful and the perfect size/combo. Had a great time with friends over lunch time. #veganfriendly #sushi #beluga Beluga

Beluga is a fantastic spot with delicious food. We arrived as a large group on a Saturday at 5pm to take advantage of their half- price sushi, dim-sun and cocktail special. All the food and drinks were great. But special mention goes to our waitress, who despite our large group ordering in drips and drabs throughout the entire evening, managed to get everything 100% correct, and to the right person every time. I think anyone else may have had a sense of humour failure. Well worth the visit!

Inattentive service, didn't have the starter we requested and didn't advise as such upfront. Food was below average. Very disappointing......................

Service was underwhelming and the steak was chewy. The starter I ordered was unavailable but I was only told this after our waiter had taken the order and returned some time later. Not a great experience and sad that the standards have dropped so much!!

Beluga is on of my favorites , great service, great food with a great price! Fresh sushi all the time that melts in your mouth! I love there white plate and it Blonde plate of sushi in all salmon , it never disappoints and is always fresh and beyond soft! I also love there steak, it's "warm bathed" and is absolutely platinum to My pallet. I would recommend belugas whole entire menu, food is always done to perfection and the right spice combinations have been chosen perfectly as well as the sides. Now mentioning sides, beluga does real good ribs and has a side that is served with the lamb ribs, it's a cream cheese and mint side, the taste of this side dipping phenomenal, light and burst with flavor! You can never go wrong with beluga!

I did not regret my decision to come here for a date night on Saturday. We were seated quickly, our drinks came within 5 minutes and even though it was full and we ordered three plates of sushi it came in under 15 minutes. I always enjoy the atmosphere of this place and the side selection of sushi and cocktails.

The sushi special is amazing. Some good good sushi! And the cocktails too! The service was great.. will definitely go back for more sushi and drinks

I don't get why this place is so popular, the food is below average. Sushi and cocktails are pretty bad actually. Not even worth it on half price specials. So many better options out there!

Severely overrated. I've been 5 times and each time I'm surprised at how I ended up there.  I have tried the set menu, sushi and a few other things - while the food is never bad, it's never good enough for the price, or the restaurants seemingly great reputation. The cocktails and dim sum are incredible, but that is about as far as it goes.

Beluga is one of my favourite spots for sushi and cocktails especially when it's a hot summers day. The friendly staff and awesome vibe outside sets them apart from the rest. Half price sushi and cocktails just make it so much more worth while. We dont mind the 30km drive from Durbanville at all.

When ever I am in Cape Town I always find any excuse to go to Beluga. From the staff to the management you see on the odd occasion to the food and drinks it's always lovely! We got so carried away with New dishes and cocktails we literally forgot to take pics! Thanks Beluga!

We decided to treat our friend to your half price sushi and cocktails for her birthday. Party of four. Upon arrival we were told that we have the table until 7pm, which was a little strange but we chalked it up to the special and the timing I guess. The friendly hostess seated us. We got our waiter and asked for a glass of water before we order. I do this everywhere I go. I noticed that the waiter was not too happy about the water order but then again, I get this reaction almost everywhere. Not going to lie, felt judged but again overlooked it. Proceeded to order cocktails for two while we waited for the rest of the party to arrive. When the other two arrived the waiter asked if we need more drinks for the new additions to the table and he took our order. His service with us felt rushed and impatient. He was irritable when two of our friends were indecisive about what they wanted to order. That did not go unnoticed. He served other tables and never checked that we were okay or wanted anything else. When the time came to pay, the waiter showed up eventually. We felt that his service soured our first experience for 3 of us at Beluga. The friend who's birthday it was, was looking forward to getting silly jelly beans with the bill. Again, our waiter was unimpressed by us. We did not get the 'standard jelly beans'. I saw that and docked his tip. We usually tip 10% and up but we felt the service did not warrant standard gratuity. He was aggressive when he saw the that we tipped him less than standard. He asked us if we were aware that the standard tip is 10%. I found his tone insulting and demeaning. He asked us if we did not receive our food and drinks like we ordered? My husband and I proceeded to tell him why we did not feel obliged to tip the standard. He stalled and rambled and my husband got annoyed and then your waiter finally said that if this was it, then fine. Clearly his was angry because he crumpled up our slip into his fist to show his frustration. My friend who's birthday we celebrated felt she wanted to complain because we saw him give better treatment to others and smiled. The same courtesy was not extended to our table. She spoke one of your other hostesses and explained her dismay. The hostess then replied by saying she is not in a position to reprimand a waiter, as this particular guy was supposedly very good and the head waiter at that. I told her about the little thing of the jelly beans and she condescendingly pointed to the bowl of jelly beans, as if it was about the jelly beans. Our gripe was that we did not receive the same calibre of service as your other customers. Excellence is in the details. We got the feeling that Beluga did not want us there. We will not be returning to your restaurant as the stench of attitude was too thick. Your manager tried to offer us a dessert or starter to make up for the subpar experience but that is not a worthwhile offer to even consider returning. Truly disgusted.

Went there for the Sushi. Reviews said it was good. Sadly, the sushi we got was sub standard. We ordered a platter which arrived quickly however there was something wrong. The sushi was not fresh and seemed like it was prepared and kept in a fridge waiting for patrons. Our waiter asked if everything was fine to which we said no. The manager came over, heard our story and offered to take 50% off the price. Good gesture but we went out for sushi and left still wanting sushi. Not good.

The food was great, but I have never been to a place were glasses are dropped oh so much by the staff. The waiter was rather non existent but the food made up for that. Go with mates not on a date.

What happened to this place? I loved coming here and decided to go here with a few friends and I was disappointed. We ordered the fillet steak and when it arrived I thought it was a starter portion? Clearly not as the waitress assured me that it's the main portion! I don't eat a lot and I finished that plate and still felt hungry after! So I ordered dessert , the truffle cake! Sadly it tasted stale. My friends ordered the sundae and it tasted like cheap vanilla ice-cream with store bought chocolate sauce. The 2 stars are for the great waitress we had! The food deserves no stars sadly! I understand that restaurants try to cut costs but when the cost cutting is so dramatic that the price does not justify the meal size then you just shooting yourself in the foot! I won't be back and neither will my friends sadly!

This place use to be my favorite when I just moved to Cape Town. Their cozy setting has a European feel to it and you can choose to sit either inside or outside. Their half price sushi and cocktail deals make it a fun lunch time venue however, their dinner menu is much more pricey and unfortunately not as great as it once was.
Jo Burger
The service was great and food came quickly - love the sushi it is still top notch. The Snowdragon roll was divine, something a bit different from the usual sushi fare. Beluga still has an upmarket feel despite having half price specials, which is impressive. Cocktails were nice enough.

I had heard that Beluga had degraded in quality...so I came expecting the worst.... I was pleasantly surprised to be found wrong. <br/><br/>The service was amazing, our waiter topping up our wine glasses as they emptied. The food came out in great time and not one person complained (I especially didn't complain as I got to taste every single thing :p ). I recommend everything pictured below. And don't forget to put salt and something new I learnt, soya sauce with your edamame beans. <br/><br/>I definitely recommend coming here, I had a great night and there are tons of different seating options.

I've only ever had great sushi here. The courtyard outside is perfect for an afternoon or warm evening meal. Inside is alive with people chatting. Staff are professional and do a good job with tables of any size.

Pretty vibey and I love the fact that I got a free shooter and dessert for my birthday. The food is pretty great but honestly I did expect it to be better.

sliiiiightly average sushi, unfortunately 💔💔💔 i really wasn't mind blownđŸ˜© i might have been too excited but also the waitress did not make it easier to pick our meal. we asked what's the best dish they had & she gave us about 5 options (which we ordered 3/5) but still. tried my first dim sum there too & unfortunately i couldn't really. <br/>however the cocktails are soooo amazing❀✚ genuinely want to have all of them at once!! The restaurant has a beautiful setting & a wonderful atmosphere. I'd defs return for drinks✹🎈🎈

Beluga is a always a solid choice. We normally go for sushi and cocktails, which when half price is relatively affordable and definitely value for money. Bam bam rolls are my all time favourite! Service is normally good. Some of the mains I do think are very overpriced for what you get sometimes, the lamb and the ribs come to mind.

I really enjoy being at beluga, they've done a really great job of having TVs showing you sports games while still maintaining an upmarket feel, the service is also always really good. The calamari starter is one of my all time favourites and the sushi is also quite enjoyable too if you're more into that. They often have really great specials offering great value for money, the only one I've tried is the winter tasting menu.<br/><br/>The first time I had the ostrich it was fantastic, the second time not so much - which is probably why I've given a 3.5 and not a 5. Most recently I had kingklip that was cooked marvelously. Stay away from the prawns, they're bland and not very fresh. The white chocolate beignets rank easily as my second favourite dessert of all time - be warned that they're very sweet.

We came through for the half price special which is available in the evening every day, as well as the whole day on Sunday. The menu is pretty much the same as sevruga. I really enjoyed the veggie sushi I tried, and the other sushi was also good. The cocktail wasn't great at all though, tasted like ready mix that had been poorly combined with other ingredients. The service was really great and attentive.

I've never really quite understood the Beluga hype. The only time I decide to eat here, is for their sushi, cocktail and dim sum specials. For sushi, I order the white plate, which includes salmon roses, California rolls, fire cracker rolls and salmon and prawn Nigiri. For dim sum, I like the duck and honey potstickers and the Prawn and coriander wontons. Also, try the Wild berry brumble, as a cocktail of choice. The dim sum is far superior than their sushi. It could be topped by any good, local sushi outlet. Nothing too exciting for me.

I don't get the Beluga fuss. Anyway I came here because I had a Zomato voucher,<br/> the only thing good about this place was the cocktails and the fact that everything was half price . sushi is way too average :(<br/><br/>Great service and setting though.

Wife and I went to Beluga for date night and we were thoroughly impressed. We opted for the winter tasting menu. I had the risotto balls and she had the calamari. Both were amazing and calamari portion size quite big for a starter. For mains she had the mushroom gnocchi and I had the ostrich fillet. I'm not a mushroom fan but she loved her dish. As for the ostrich it was perfectly cooked and the veg, potato croquet and reduction perfectly complimented it.<br/><br/>Dessert...Wow. Silky smooth creme brulee and an amazing chocolate sundae.<br/><br/>The service was really good as well. I will definitely be returning.

Been to Beluga a few times. They used to be one of my favourite restaurants but as off recent I found their service to be quite average and their food has just become way to overpriced. I usually go for the sushi, either the carins rolls, the bamboo rolls or the prawn bean curd. The portions have decreased majorly but the price hasn't which is disappointing.
Cynthia
Great venue, especially in summer, catching some rays in the outside section. Sushi always fresh and yummy, and a great selection of cocktails and on the mains menu.

The food at this place is great. I can see why people recommend it. They are very knowledgable about their fantastic seafood. The sushi was excellent and I got this Kipling in a sweet chili sauce which was great. One girl was great service through out the night.<br/><br/>What failed our experience was the transfer between waiters. The first guy knew a lot, but didn't take down two people's order correctly. One girl didn't want tuna in the sushi and another girl changed her mind on the order immediately but this was not noted and we had to wait for er food to cook. I also ordered dumplings and buns and although a little dry, would be nice with a sauce but they forgot to give it to us.<br/><br/>Finally, there are managers hanging out outside all night and I'm not from there so not sure why they did that, but once they all left, we got hounded by a homeless person who wouldn't leave. It was really annoying and I don't know if the restaurant was in on it, but it made for a frustrating experience after you pay so much and want to enjoy things. <br/><br/>So food and table service was great but be prepared to potentially deal with homeless and incorrect meals.<br/><br/>Michael
