A Cape Town gem - not to be missed. If you want a flavor explosion and an authentic dim sum experience outside of the Far East, try this place, you won't be disappointed. Ed's place is in my top three places to eat in the Mother City.
Authenticity! Love the sweet bean buns and the pot stickers.. Foodies will love this place. A must visit when visiting Cape Town. If you’re looking for an authentic dim sum experience you’ll find it at this gem of a place. Try the Vietnamese coffee!!
The most authentic, freshly prepared, delicious parcels of joy! The best dim sum in Cape Town by a long way. As good as some of the best dim sum in Hong Kong and London too.
Definitely worth the visit. We just about tried everything on the menu and couldn’t fault any of it. Fresh, tasty & excellent. Service also very good.

Best service and food ever! Hubby and I went without a reservation and they were completely fully booked. We were helped none the less and had the best food experience ever. Will definitely be returning soon.
I'd live here if I could. The dim sum was fantastic, the setting is simple but effective and the prices aren't over the top at all.
Great food, excellent atmosphere and vibe. Best dim sum ever! Definitely one of our new favorite spots!
Great food, simple with fresh ingredients. The best Sui mai I've had in South Africa 👍
This is by far one o my favourite places in the whole world. The food is too class can't wait to visit this special place again!
We loved our first visit and it will not be the last. Simple decor and surroundings and the food is served on paper plates and bowls.
The most important thing is that the food is excellent - well prepared, cooked and very tasty. We ate a selection from across the menu and whilst individually the dishes are small it was very filling.
We enjoyed it greatly and it is not expensive.
This place is a reasonably priced HEAVEN. Love the no corkage and the food blew my mind.
Always a must for us when we in Capetown, Suggest lunch as dinner service can get very busy and food takes quite long..
Great little place. The food is awesome and fresh. The owner treats his guests very well. You feel like you are at home with your friends, eating the best food ever!!! Highly recommend.
All their food is excellent and the atmosphere is awsome, do yourself a favor and get down to South China Dim Sum Bar!
Absolutely phenomenal food. All previous reviews I'd heard were spot on. Definitely coming back.
Authentic. Delicious. Cosy. Reasonable prices. Lovely service. Perfect !
I absolutely loved it. Food was great. Restaurant is simple but appeasing. Wouldn't want it any other way. Perfect for a date or for a group of friends. Was so lovely to have a selection of things to try. Really brings everyone together picking of all the different plates and experiencing food that is not everyday. Can't wait to go back.
Honestly a 10/10 experience. Amazing service, amazing food, amazing vibes. This restaurant makes me feel whole again. Highly recommend anyone who has a gap in third heart, to come here and feel as though your purpose in life has been fulfilled.
Absolutely amazing food! Small restaurant that was completely booked out when we arrived on Saturday. Every single dish was delicious. My favourites were the turnip cakes and the vegetable pot stickers. Would recommend them any day! The service was also great and really quick. Would love to go back
Freshly prepared food that’s delicious every time! I love eating here
Love this spot. From the outside it doesn’t look like much however the inside has a cool vibe! Food is very fresh and tasty. Everything we tasted was exceptional, will definitely recommend!
Honestly my favourite Asian dim sum bar (the ONLY dim sum worth eating in Cape town) always fresh, authentic and great atmosphere! My favourites on the menu are turnip cake, veg potstickers, lamb potstickers and try their homemade ice tea! Yum😁 Book your spot because it gets busy! ✌🏻

Fresh, delicious food. Cool and vibey. Knowledgable, intuitive service. Prices are very good and worth every cent. BYO wine for a small corkage. Defs going back soon. 😃
Food was great. Easy portions allowing you to taste everything on the menu. Small selection on the wine list but wines are purposely selected to match cuisine. Decor is simple but comfy. Focus is squarely on the food.
A little gem of a place. Amazing food, authentic Asian favours, and great service. Loved it! A must try for food lovers. Great place to get together and share food.
This is a hidden gem! I had everything on the menu. And it is so well priced! I’m already planning on when I’m coming back. The atmosphere is understated and the dim sum is one of a kind - all freshly made and none of the pre-frozen type of stuff.
If you close your eyes tight enough, you feel as though you are in Asian. From the music, decor, lights, seating arrangements, simple plating = an eating experience. They were super busy - booking is essential.
Food comes as it is prepared, therefore relatively quick. Service is quick and our waiter was super knowledgeable and friendly.
All the food is to be shared which makes it more intimate. If you have adventurous taste buds then they are a must. All the food was flavourful. I recommend the Chicken wontons, lamb pot stickers with yogurt and the Prawn noodle soup (special of the day).
The only thing i can fault is the wine which i found was extremely overpriced. R40 for a glass and you don't get much quantity for value (see pics). If you share portions their pricing is fair, some items very reasonable others slightly more (so price as you eat).
WILL BE BACK!
It is truly memorable- quaint, personal and the dim sum is to die for! Definitely our new local spot.
We tasted all small plates and we couldn’t pick our favorite as they were all delicious! Definitely a great spot for small group of friends!

Wish I had taken more pics of the food before we tucked in, the wonton soup was delicious. The noodles and dumplings on point. I did find the service was slow but that could be due to the small kitchen. I do think restaurant is quite pricey.
South China is arguably one of the best dim sum bars in Cape Town. Warm, cosy ambience with a great buzz. Will most definitely be returning.
By far the best dim sum I’ve had in SA. Try the lamb pot stickers and tell me otherwise. I pop in every time I visit the cape and have yet to be disappointed. Give it a bash if you’re in the CT CBD, you’ll be pleasantly surprised

I think that South China Dim Sum Bar is one of the CBD's best kept secrets. And if you have been there, did you know there are more tables at the back?! I feel like I am shooting myself in the foot by letting you all know this, but the service and quality would should be able to keep up with the increased traffic after I hit Publish Review ;) Excellent food, great service.
Dim sum was nice and fresh and reasonably priced. However the braised beef with jasmine rice was somewhat very pricey for the little bit of food one gets
I wanted to take myself on a late night date for dinner, so I settled on South. I had heard such great things from so many people so I decided to eventually test the place out. It’s a very unassuming little spot - blink and you’d miss it - but this makes for a cosy and intimate dining atmosphere that you wouldn’t want any other way. The staff were friendly and kind. The lady who mainly saw to me was so lovely, and clearly passionate about her work. As it was my first time there she patiently explained to me how the menu worked. The menu is relatively small, but what they do, they do well. I had the lamb pot stickers, the pork belly dumplings and the pork bao. All were delicious and packed a lot of flavour in such small packages. I’d definitely love to come back, hopefully next time with a friend, to be able to try more of a variety.
Go forth and eat! It was a little pricier than I expected but everything we ordered was good. The ice cream is definitely not to be missed. I don't think an established institution like this needs more of a review.
Can't believe it took us so long to get here! We loved our meal. The food was really delicious. Prices were excellent. Service started off well but did sort of peter off after the place got busier. Small little stools to sit on - very authentic - but not so comfy for my 6ft hubby. Will be back again and again!
When you see my rating you may think that I have been a bit over zealous, give South China a chance and I am sure that you will not be disappointed.
The restaurant is small and tucked away at the top of Long Street. I'm not judging you if you walked past it many times and didn't notice it, neither did I until I went.
The menu is limited and the portions are small but that's exactly what I like. It really does give you the opportunity to share multiple dishes.
My favorite dish, which was unexpected, was the turnip cake! A top spot for a date and I look forward to enjoying another green tea mojito there soon
Delicious, authentic dim sum, by a chef who looks like he actually is from Hong Kong. Authentic, casual setting as well. The food was excellent, but was let down a bit by chaotic service. Timing of courses was uncertain and happened to be rushed for our table. We recommend to order multiple times so as to space the service of the food over more time. Very unique and certainly worth visiting for the best known dim sum experience outside of Hong Kong.
I loved everything about this place .It depicts a small restaurant in downtown china .I loved the simplicity of the decor and friendly aura of the place. The chef was so humble ,always looking up to see if everyone was enjoying their meal.Their vegetarian options are yummy and their home brewed green ice tea will have your heart.
Had the most delicious dim sum and fantastic service! The food all game out really quickly and the atmosphere is nice in the small little restaurant. The chicken wontons, har gow and pork buns were a few of my favourites. Will definitely be going back very soon.
I have to admit, I don't know a lot about dim sum. We just came here because we love Asian food in general and this place had great reviews. Now we know why! It was delicious. We tried a large portion of the menu and loved it all. Friendly and quick service, good vibe. Highly recommended!
Wow! What a treat...amazing menu, only thing missing is broth dumplings to make it a proper Hong Kong experience. Must visit for phenomenal Dim Sum
Despite the service being somewhat haphazard, it can easily be be overlooked with the treats that follow. Decently priced wine and beautifully prepared mouth watering dim sum and perfect little turnip cakes. The plates a reasonably priced but watch out as you'll quickly work up the price because you'll want to keep ordering more. Lamb potstickers are a must!
Small Simple setup with great authentic food and friendly service. Ask for the specials and let them recommended a few gems. Home made ice tea
Lets start with the reason we went there - the dimsum. It was lovely, but average. Nothing specifically wrong with it, but nothing memorable either. The braised beef bowl was an overpriced, and unbalanced dish. Not worth it. The service could also have been a bit better.

Great food and service! Dumplings delicious with original fillings. Atmosphere lively and bustling. Only negative, a bit noisy making it difficult to chat.
Had a great evening here. Food was lovely, place was busy. Zomato says the average cost for two is R150... I disagree, it's more like R200 per person! Minor things I didn't like... Being charged for condiments, the prices not being printed on the menu. Good expensive treat, but cost will prevent it being a weekly destination for me unfortunately.
I'm a sucker for dumplings, so trying out the south China dim sum bar was a no-brainer. I've been coming here for over a year, and it's one of my favourite places for no-fuss good food.
Each time, my favourite dumpling changes. The chicken wonton soup is to die for - I think that they should make it a permanent item on the menu.
It's always busy, so do make a booking if you're not planning to go at the start of service.
I saw that they recently expanded the seating area - I hope that they made some changes in the kitchen to accommodate this, because the service can be a tiiiny bit slow when it's very busy. However, it's not enough to deter me.
Definitely give the chicken wontons and siu mai a shot.
The best Dimsum bar in Cape Town! The lamb is probably my favorite- with a hidden sauce. The vegetarian my second favorite. The vibe is fun and casual- great vibe in the place- the owner cooks himself... every bite is good!
I was initially very disappointed to arrive at south china dim sum bar to order a take away, only to find out they only do "take seats" for 30 min into starting service. I left, and came back another time to order takeaway at the correct time and was told again - no take aways other than the first 5min of service! This was incredibly frustrating to be let down twice in a row and told different information each time.
The restaurant is very popular and always full when I pop in (however I do think they could benefit a great deal from doing take aways!)
Their dim sum was delicious! I ordered the vegetable potstickers and their pork and red bean paste bao buns.
Very tasty and will definitely be back!
Yummiest dim sums i have ever had. They have got wide varieties of dim sums. Loved the veggie one the most. Small busy place which needs reservations prior.
Best ever DIM SUM!! The owner personally welcomed and assisted us to squeeze us in for an early dinner. Fully booked.
Every little plate that landed on our table was delicious and delectable! Well priced too.
Best dumplings Ive eaten by far! Consistency in service and quality of food always keeps me coming back for more. The lamb dumplings are one of my favourite dishes..
Loooove this place so much. The food is absolutely amazing, we ordered almost everything on the menu (to share) and everything is full of flavour yet delicate. Favorites: the prawn hargow, the pork bao and the special of the day is always great as well. Service was not great the last time we went but will go back even if i have to serve myself :)
Dropped in for lunch over a weekend. Great surprise. The food was was really good. Unfortunately the kitchen was closing and we couldn't stay long. Will definitely go back for more.
Cool place, exceptional dim sum. Service was lacking a bit but that's because there was one waiter. Still worth the wait!
Authentic and affordable with great service! This is easily the Best Dim Sum Bar I have ever visited with the tastiest food! We tried all the flavours and shared among friends, and enjoyed all of them! The dipping sauce was flavoursome, complimenting the dim sums very well.
Really amazing cuisine and restaurant experience. Very laid back environment to sit and enjoy some of the best food the city has to offer. Great date night for our one year anniversary and can imagine it to be ideal for any couples/groups to come enjoy together. We'll definitely be going back (soon)! 👌🏽
Tucked away toward the end of long street this place is an absolute hidden gem! The restaurant itself is decorated with posters from Asian movies and the music is old-school which gives the place a quirky fun atmosphere. The food is out of this world delicious! Especially the steamed buns. If you live dim sum this place is the spot for you because they have the best in the city! Not badly priced either and great service!
This cute little restaurant on Long Street is extremely plain at first sight, but the simple decor is reminiscent of an authentic, simple family-run restaurant (which it may well be.)
The food is delicious! Personal favourites were just about everything that our waitress recommended. I think we tried almost everything on the menu and nothing disappointed. Our waitress was super informative, and it really helped us to make decisions and understand the food better. We paired our lunch with a bottle of Miss Molly at a very decent price, and were three happy girls!
Can't wait to be back, especially as it's a lovely spot for a big group to share a meal.
Love this place and it's amazing food. Great for sharing with friends, we got a few items to share as a group. The is limited space so I would book a table if you are set on dim sum. Service was great, our waitress explained the menu to us and the specials for the evening. Food was tasty and full of flavour!!
Very cozy vibe inside, I liked it because the wind is a little strong in Cape Town every now and again. I really loved the Dim Sum, I tried it all. The Pork, chicken, lamb and beef. Very tasty and well priced. Will definitely be back.
I love, love this place. It's quirky trendy and busy! I have been twice. Each time I thoroughly enjoyed everything on offer. The menu isn't massive, just makes it easier to order. Love the set up, wait staff are good, service was fast. I will go again and again
We came here as a last minute decision on a Friday night.
The service was good but the food better! The only problem we had is that we got a little bored of eating the same dim sum as the variety wasn't HUGE. Nonetheless, a great restaurant with a great vibe and lovely people to match. Will be coming back!!
This place is hard to get into - it’s just that good. I resorted to reserving a table two days beforehand (I know very un-Capetonian) to be sure of a spot. The decor has a very street food feel to it, as if you’re in the South of China eating Dim Sum..hence the name hehe. A blackboard displays all the types of pockets of steamed happiness available and much more. Personally I liked the beef pot sticker the best - so much so that I ordered about four portions. I love how you can sit at your table all night and just order continuously, it never gets boring. My wallet screaming from my handbag was the only thing that stopped me from just living at that table forever. If you’re into sweet and coffee please order the Vietnamese coffee at the end with condensed milk, the hot one. It is such a great dessert and a good energy boost if you plan to head out after.
If you are looking for dim sum, this is the place. The restaurant has a certain simplicity that is synonymous with the southern China way of dining. Easy in, easy out. The food is cheap and comes out when ready yet it's not lacking any traditional flavour. It ticks all the right boxes, I cannot wait to return.
Yum yum yum and a bowl of dim sum! Really delicious! Would've given a 4.5 rating, but service could have been better - had to reorder dishes that never came though we were still billed. But other than that. Yum.
10 out of 10, love, love, love this place, a hidden gem on long str, not too visible from the street, awesome decor of Bruce lee pics inside the restaurant, clean and neat, open kitchen, service was great, the condense milk coffee, and sweet been past boa is a winner, veg and chicken dim sum were yummy and fresh, they serve the food on paper plates which I found quite cool, retro take on Asian street food!
Hungry for some dim sum, we popped by this popular spot. The bao and pot stickers were extremely delicious, tasting fresh and with complex Flavours. The char Siu bao was a favorite. We also really enjoyed the braised beef short rib and rice dish, although it was a very small portion. The only disappointment was the dish of the day, which was supposedly a prawn and fish laksa, but only had three prawns, no fish and very little flavour to speak of. A bit underwhelmed for the R90 price tag. Besides that, loved the vibe of the place - great music and the disco ball is fun.
The best meal I've had in Cape Town in a long time. I tried the chicken, lamb, beef, prawn and veg options all mind blowing. The sauces that accompany the dim sum are delicious as well. You get three options one sweet one sour and one spicy. This quirky intimate restaurant is by far my favourite place in Cape Town right now. The dim sum wrappers were absolutely perfect and the fillings so flavourful. I'll be back to try some of their soups and rice dishes. Thank you so much Sharese Hunt for recommending this place I haven't been so happy about a meal in a long time. I'll definitely become a regular
I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at South China! Very friendly wait staff and prompt service. I tried all the dim sum (lamb, beef, prawn, pork and veg), wontons and the steam buns. My favourite was the chicken wontons and 8 pieces of dim sum for dinner left me feeling happy and full. They offer a selection of meals for diners that would prefer a rice or noodle dish. I would recommend ordering a bottle of wine, or bringing your own if you're planning on having more than one glass
I think Dim Sum is such an underrated cuisine. I love these small pockets of flavor bombs. We decided we were in the mood for Dim Sum and heard so many good things about South China Dim Sum Bar so we thought to give it a go. The decor is very simple with crates for chairs and imagery of Bruce Lee on the wall.
The Resturant wasn't overly busy when we arrived but was when we left. We picked a table and greeted by our lovely waitress. She explained the different dished they had on offer including a chicken wonton and noodle soup.
We order basically 5 plates to share and a glass of Pinotage to kick things off.
Just like a lighting punch from Bruce Lee himself, the first plates arrived on our table. Each bite was like a swift kick in the face of flavor. The wontons and Hau Gou were insane. Tasty and wanting you to fight over each piece on the plate.
My favorite was the BBQ Pork Bun. They were fresh, full of filling and just amazing. We ended up going back and ordering the chicken wonton noodle soup and i can agree this was exactly what I needed. The soup was full of flavor and made me want to go back for more.
This is great to see a growing trend of Dim Sum places in Cape Town.
I really enjoy how intimate the place is. The service is quick because of how small the restaurant is so I love that. The dim sum is AMAZING. I've never really been a dim sum person because I've always found it to be too salty and the taste never appealed to my palette, but when I came here I...
What a great place for Dim Sum! The place is small and the décor very simple, with wooden tables and benches and old-school Asian posters on the wall. You don't come here for the décor but for the fantastic food.
The staff is friendly and very efficient with an organised ordering system in place ensuring food is served at a good pace. The chef and owner can be seen buzzing behind the counter, with always a smile to spare for his happy customers.
The small assortment of dishes is both varied and well-priced, allowing diners to indulge in a feast of flavours without breaking the bank. Everything on the menu is modelled around authentic street-food from Southeast Asia and is made from fresh ingredients from local suppliers.
The menu changes often and can be found on a blackboard in the front of the eatery and is updated daily with new things to sample. On the menu you will find a selection of dishes including wontons, pot stickers, char siu bao, har gow, only but to name a few.
The dishes are served on biodegradable plates, and each is accompanied with its own chosen sauce.
Overall great experience and definitely recommended.
This place is a firm favorite...they never disappoint. We keep going back again and again. Har gau is always amazing... Yum!
There's no ambience worth speaking about - the unpainted walls with Jackie Chan posters, the paper plates with plastic cutlery and the wooden benches and stools in a tiny amount of space. But the food packs in a punch. The dimsums are translucent, plump and oozing with flavor. The prawn laksa (which was the special of the day) was also very flavorful.
No pretensions and nothing snazzy. All you can expect is good genuine dim sums albeit not at a great price. I thought it was tad overpriced when compared with an overall experience. However it's recommended ...
Yet another outstanding and super-delicious meal at South China Dim Sum Bar. Moist and tasty little morsels. Brilliant noodles and fantastic, efficient and friendly service from Marcel. Searched far and wide for good quality dim sum and this is it!!!
I don't know where the vegetable pot stickers have been all my life, but I count on making up for lost time. On a regular basis. And I'm making sure that every person I know visits you at least once, preferably more :)
Absolutely adored this restaurant! When you're walking down Long Street, make sure you don't miss it. The dim sum is incredible and the service is equally as great. The menu is quite small, so I would suggest rather going for a snack instead of a meal.
Our new favorite lunch spot by far! With daily specials on the menu, friendly service and delicious home made food, what more would you want? We definitely recommend this place!
The best dim sum around! This place swarms so either get there early or be prepared to wait! We ordered a portion of each one just to taste a variety and sample what they had to offer. My favorite was the pork, but to be honest, they are all delicious! They also have other options to choose from if you don't want dim sum.. But why wouldn't you want dim sum!?
Casual dim sum bar serving what is probably the best dim sum in SA. Lots of variety, with something for everyone. The food is freshly prepared and incredibly tasty. Small restaurant so best to book.
What a winner! Went with a large group and tried nearly every dish - wasn't disappointed in any of them. Be sure to book or go very early as they take last lunch orders at 2pm. If you're into your wine, take note that they don't have wine glasses so be prepared to drink your wine out of a glass tumbler. Will be back!
Best dim spot place in town. Be sure to book as they are always busy. The parsnip veggie dim sum is my all time favourite. The chicken and lamb pot stickers and noodles are superb. Everything on the menu is a winner.
Fantastic little quirky place with food that smacks of freshness. Excellent dim sum, pork buns and wonton soup. Well worth a visit. Staff are super friendly (if a little slow). Great meal.
Cosy and casual, I loved the set up of this dim sum bar, which is perfect for dates or small groups.
The decor is Asian retro pop, if that makes sense, which is refreshing and not cheap-looking or tacky. Service was pretty good, the waiter was very helpful and informative about the menu.
We were a group of 4, so we shared a few pot stickers, dumplings and
The thing about dim sum is you get full so quickly but want to try everything!
Highlights:
-Char Siu Bao
-Chicken wontons
-Braised short rib with hoisin
-Also tried their special of the day, a noodle soup.
The specials menu is a goldmine.
Totally delicious and full of flavour, found tucked away from all the clubs etc on Long.
Best dim sum in Cape Town. I've been to China and this even beats some of the dim sum there. I don't eat meat and still found there enough of a variety inspire of the limited menu. The vegetable potstickers, har gou and turnip cakes were all delicious and I can't choose a favourite - in fact they were so good that we ordered a 2nd round of all. The service was a little slow but not in a bad way, it gave us time to chat and there was a nice pause between dishes
The amazing flavours lingered in my mouth after and will definitely be back. We went early and didn't book but if you go a little later I would recommend booking
Great sushi and priced just right for Cape Town, we ordered a platter which lots of different Sushi.
The service was brilliant, only slight issue is that they don't sell alcohol but if you ask for it they go the extra mile of getting it elsewhere
I absolutely love this place, I find myself quite often going out of my way to be close to this little gem come lunch time :)
The decor is something differed with a very rustic look and feel to it, the service is great considering there is one chef, one waitress... The food... Is amazing you can definitely taste it's fresh and home made... Because you can see the chef making it too!
If you are in the area and if you love dim sums pop in here you won't regret it. My personal favourite is the Lamb pot sticker with spicy yogurt dip... TRY IT!
Nick Du Toit and I had the most amazing Dim Sum tonight! As a first timer to the restaurant, we didn't know to book - this is a must! Will definitely be going back to taste that hoisan sauce again.
Loved the South Chine Dim Sum Bar! Food was delicious, great ambience, the deco takes you back to Chinese-themed cinema. The blonde duo deserve a major thumbs up for a fantastic restaurant
Ah best dim sum in cape town. I love the vibe, great service affordable drinks. Going there tonight! So excited. Green tea mojitos are amazing
Awesome little spot you might easily walk past. But enter, and be taken straight to what I imagine an old Vietnam cafe must feel like with crates to sit on and swinging hits from the 60s. We sampled a bunch of items on the menu, and in typical fashion each dish arrives as soon as it's ready, so come here with some friends in the afternoon and enjoy a stream of the tastiest dim sum (what even are they?) every few minutes. Lovely!
As my friend didn't sleep well due to the all night din of Long Street (grr) she didn't join me for lunch today.
I saw that this restaurant was just a short walk from my hotel and had wanted to try it since.
It was small hole in the wall type of vibe with unpainted walls peppered with Bruce Lee movie posters. Quaint decor I would say.
Again, one places their order at the cashier (seems norm for a lot of eateries of late?) although this one didn't ask for payment.
I ordered the chicken wantons in spicy Szechuan dipping. It arrived with a hoisin cum spicy chilly dipping and it was quite good. Definitely was home made.
For mains I had "Soto Ayam". It was a mildy spicy broth with chicken slivers and rice noodles in this case. It is a dish I'm familiar with as it originates from where I come from, i.e. SE Asia. This offering was pretty decent with the right amount of spices in it and a decent amount of chicken. I really enjoyed it.
The only puzzlingly thing I had was the iced green tea. It was loaded with sugar syrup which made it coyingly sweet. Nevertheless a really nice drink to have on a beautiful warm Cape Town day.
I will definitely be back as the other dishes on the menu are equally enticing like the char siu bao. Which is a dim sum classic. Hopefully the next trip I'm in Cape Town I can get to try this restaurant again.
Authentic and vibey. Order everything on the menu, it's all bloody good. Service is on the money (of which you don't need much). Will be a regular
This place was amazing!! Such a chilled atmosphere and loved the vibe of the chalkboard menu, open kitchen and few tables. Our waitress was divine as well. Definitely going back
Dim Sum-More
South China Dim Sum bar is easily missed hidden in a nook at the top of Long Street, although not easily forgotten.
A hipster cute establishment with an open plan kitchen that faces an often fully booked restaurant pumps out the most deliciously balanced and textured Dim Sum.
Seated on cushioned wooden crates, with glass covered table tops encasing the menu and surrounded by famous imagery it is a warm, cosy escape from the wildness of one of Cape Town’s party streets.
The best way to order would be try everything on their menu and share, and everything that we sampled was worthy of repeat orders. A special name drop has to be the lamb that rests delicately on a garlic flavoured mayo. The crispy caramelized casing juxtaposing the rich, luxurious filling replete with dipping sauce triggered a taste-bud tango. They also serve vicious delicious pork stuffed dim sum, the Char Siu Bao, is a tasty treat.
Their food menu is concentrated on Dim Sum (Chair Siu Bao, Wontons, Pot Stickers and Har Gow) however they do offer a few mains. Their braised short-rib (R69) was being quaffed around the restaurant. The sticky rice and pulled texture of the beef is good, however I found the aniseed flavour too overwhelming for my taste.
Celebrate the experience with some Miss Molly (R120) or if keeping it civilized have some tea.
Aside from being highly affordable, with consistently great food the service is slick especially when it spins. But most of all it is such a jubilant place to experience. South China Dim Sum bar is the gift that keeps on giving.
so much deliciousness in one small establishment.
dim sum for days - variety is perfect and the paired flavours are to die for.
noodles/salad are fresh and light - so tasty, great pair with dim sum.
to finish - the homemade ice cream or simple vanilla flavour with 5 spice chocolate sauce = exotic heaven in a bowl.
don't think about, just book a table and go.
I love dim sum. I grew up in Hong Kong, and as a result I seek out good dim sum in every city I can find. Of Cape Town's dim sum, South China Dim Sum Bar is definitely the best. Really no question. I always order the chicken wontons, vegetable potstickers, turnip cakes, and har gow. The har gow is particularly good. The only thing I've tried here that I haven't liked is the Hawker Noodles dish - feel free to pass on that, and focus on the dim sum. The decor is also really delightful, and it is again a great respite on Long St.
All that being said however, we had some weird issues with our bill last time I was there a few weeks ago. This is the only reason I'm not giving them a higher rating. Our bill arrived, we paid, and everything was fine, and then as we turned to leave we were chased down by the manager who claimed they had forgotten to charge us for a few orders of dim sum that we're still quite sure we did not order. It was a really unfortunate interaction, and we paid in order to just get out of there. That being said, I'm still going to go back - can't really turn up my nose at the best dim sum in Cape Town!
The pros: Good dim sum, generally good service. Cute decor. Awesome har gow (steamed prawn dumplings).
The cons: Weird experience with payment. It's always booked so you must remember to make a reservation.
What a great cosy spot! its a quaint dim sum bar that has an authentic feel about it. Everything about it is cool, the wine in tumblers, the furniture, the lanterns.
The food is served very quickly, even though the restaurant was packed - for this reason, I recommend booking. We tried the chicken wontons, beef and veg potstickers (all served in threes) and the steamed buns, all well priced served with a different sauce/vinegarette - so delish!
They have some cool cocktails, like a green tea mojito which I definitely will try next time!
Best Dim Sum in town. Small and rustic, that this is made up for in big tastes. Food can take a little long to come out, but it's worth the wait. Also a well priced wine menu to get with the delicious food.
This is such a quaint little spot. The food is absolutely delicious. Unfortunately we had a rather rude waitress, which marred the experience, but I'd go back for the yummy dim sum.
Love this place, dim sum is absolutely amazing! Been a number of times and never bern dissappointed. Innovative Asian fusion with new items on the menu often.
One of my favourite Asian restaurants by far! I only started liking dim sum after going to this place. I've tried the noodles and other dishes but always end up preferring the dim sum. The pork buns and vegetable wontons are my favourites. Dessert is not their strong point so I wouldn't recommend it, and try book in advance cause the place is small. A very charming little waitress there too :)
Absolutely love this place! So quaint and such good dimsum made fresh as you order! The only recommendation I would make to the owners is to consider using re-usable crockery/china and chopsticks in an effort to go green. Otherwise amazing!
This is without a doubt the best dim sum restaurant in Cape Town. Well priced, simple approach to food. They also have a phenomenal salty caramel ice cream and amazing service to boot.
Delish dim sum! Cute little venue! Great cocktails! Happy vibe! Lovely staff! ???
An impromptu lunch. Really enjoyed the venue and experience. Nice and quaint with delicious food and friendly service. Will definitely go back.
A solid little spot for some shared Asian dishes, complimented with sharp little dipping sauces and a decent selection of booze. Don't be fooled by the rustic/chic decor, dishes are well executed, flavoursome, prepared fresh and served hot! Recommended dishes: beef pot stickers and har-gaw.
Super delicious dim sum and wonton soup a must! Great vibe and awesome service! Highly recommended... One improvement I could suggest is a improved wine list..
Awesome little spot. Great dim sum . Would highly recommend. Had the chicken wonton soup as well... Amazing. Will return.........::::::::::::
