Review The Stack - Cape Town Central

We had such a lovely two course Sunday lunch here for a very reasonable price. The food was absolutely delightful and the service was great. Cocktails were a bit expensive (I'd recommend going for their half price during the week), but we ordered anyway and they were delicious! Atmosphere was super and we sat outside as it was such a beautiful day. 100% would go here again.

This is hands down one of my new favorite hidden gems in Cape Town. Situated in the heart of Gardens, The Stack is nestled in the narrow Weltevreden road - you’ll be happy to hear that they provide their own parking space. Winning! Once you walk in you are immediately greeted by one of the friendly staff and made to feel like you are right at home - where you belong. The booking was super easy on the dineplan app. I immediately got a text message and email confirming my reservation. My friend was celebrating her birthday and we were treated like royalty basically. It was a perfect day, so we sat out on the terrace and enjoyed a bottle of wine. It was absolutely sublime. We both opted for the steak and chips with a side portion of carrots and I’m telling you it was delicious. Grilled to perfection with a glorious flavor and oh so filling! No Birthday is complete without dessert though, so once we were ready I ordered the white chocolate cheesecake and my friend had the dark chocolate tart. One word. YUM. We had a lovely afternoon and will most definitely be back again. Thank you!

Great cocktails and fantastic decor. Food was pretty average. Steak ordered rare with a capital R was at best medium rare and mostly medium. Awesome just for drinks though.
Estee de Villiers
Love the wonderful service! The decor will also blow you away and then the food and coffee is incredible too. Was so pleasantly surprised and will definitely be going back asqp

What used to be a private gentleman's club and heritage building has been restored with loving care and panache. Simple but elegant bistro food, fantastic cocktails and service to die for.
Bogdan Gerya
Wonderfully calm and relaxing setting, especially at the terrace, very nice cuisine. Try the the white gaspacho - a bit spicy but really good! Very friendly and attentive stuff
Walter Redpath
Tranquil lunch venue and trendy at night. Excellent food that’s consistently great each time I’m there. Highly recommendable.

Excellent service and our meals were great! The gin cocktail is highly recommended 'The stack'. We had The Stack salad, octopus carpaccio, Pork main, and steak frite. All absolutely outstanding and our waiter Kuda looked after us superbly!
Charly De Bruyne
Excellent food and service! Very recommendable place. The Springbok is definitely recommendable as well as the South African oysters. Slight minor point, it was really warm inside even with the airco on
Ruan Stander
Really great cocktails to begin with at the bar. I had the waiter's recommendations for dinner which was the octopus carpaccio (absolutely delicious and packed full of flavour) and fir main the Springbok loin which was perfectly cooked and also very delicious. A must try for good food and cocktails

Perfect intimate exclusive wine, dine & can accommodate dance venue. Tranquil garden views. 2 bars with spacious indoor & outdoor lounging.

Hidden in the Gardens in Cape Town is The Stack. A classy upmarket retaurant with exquisite food and ambiance. Excellent service and very pleasant outdoor tables under big trees are a big plus.

Awesome food and wine. Really nice staff and atmosphere. Definitely a must if you're visiting Cape Town!

I've only been here for cocktails and was blown away. Try out the Rose-Lipt Maiden. A stunning setting.

Brilliant food, great vibe. Would definitely like to go again

I really enjoy my stay at the stack a lot, because I learn new things everyday and the food is just so awesome, and also am surrounded by love ones

So imagine my surprise to discover a delightful spot which is hidden in Gardens, with the most charming decor and the friendliest staff! The design and decor is so warm and inviting, you can't help but feel at home. I had the Beef Bourguignon, and just loved how well prepared the dish was, the presentation and the taste and texture. The wine list was impressive, with some really impressive whites, and warm, full bodied reds. The Graham Beck champaigne was the winner of the day though!(The Le Clicquot I find too citrussy!) I finished off with Rum Baba desert, (but I sampled some of my partner's creme brulee;-) ) and took my time to savour the delightful treat. I cannot wait to return to this hidden gem...

Been to this establishment twice, the second time to rectify the first experience. Criticisms. 1. The tea was too weak the first time and too strong the second time, the tea strainer inside the pot barely reaches the water. My question, is this really so hard to correct? 2. The pastry was meat pie pastry on the apple tart tatin and the shortbread oddly served with the creme brulee was of pure Maizena. On the high tea, the scones weren't properly cooked. The spiced "biscuit" was soft. The slice of cake was too big with too much butter cream filling. Altogether way too stodgy to look at and impossible to finish. Compliments. 1. Beautiful venue, with stunning decor. 2. Great presentation and service the second time. 3.Excellent salmon snack, cucumber sandwiches, cake and strawberry garnish. 4.The handmade chocolates are a very welcome special finishing touch. Suggestions. 1. The shortbread served with the creme brulé is too large and definitely unnecessary. 2. Macaroons or another colourful treat, choux puffs and blossoms will elevate the magical element the idea of high tea inspires. 3. One properly cooked well risen cheese scone as opposed to two, with unsweetened cream, and a smaller piece of cake is enough of a treat on the high tea, because wanting to appear generous while compromising on ingredients and the average appetite could lead to an unnecessary and regrettable downfall (I kid you not, nor do I exaggerate) of an otherwise lovely experience.

Great restaurant, I adored the decor and the atmosphere. The service was perfect and the food was amazing. Try out the beef tartar and the pork loin. Very decent prices for such a “classy place” Well done guys keep up the good work!

Went there yesterday evening for the 2nd time and absolutely loved it!!! Derrick makes the best cocktails! Great atmosphere, such friendly staff & we had the best service from a young African lady, just can't remember her name. Would definitely recommend The Stack to anyone!!! Absolutely love it ❤️

Excellent service, excellent food (better than many of the top fine dining restaurants in CT), good value for money, great venue - lovely staff - thank you!
Lizette Mostert
After having lunch there yesterday on a beautiful autumn summery day i can say it was amazing. The food divine, the service great and the ambiance wonderful. I loved the decor of the place most. Definately going again

Great ambience, first glass food and drinks with the best attention to detail. Glad to have found what will become my regular meeting, eating and drinking place with great friends and business colleagues.

Great private members club open to everyone for lunch and dinner. I recommend lunch. Not too busy, lovely food, very peaceful surroundings for central Cape Town.

Beautiful property with stunning design and decor Well done Sara Ord Staff incredibly friendly and food top notch Definetely worth a visit when in Cape Town

The service at stage Stack was so professional and our waiter Keith was excellent. The bar downstairs is fun for having Pre dinner drinks. To top it all, we were a table of 8, and all our starters, mains and desserts were delicious. Thank you for a great way to spend my birthday.
Nicolette Anderson
Very bad experience at this establishment. The Kingklip was off, the steak was as tough as nails and full of sinew. The waiters got all our orders wrong. It was extremely embarrassing as we dined with very influential patrons and the food and service was of very poor quality.
Tristan Bownes
Went for lunch today, and it was incredible! We were a big table so got try everyone's food but it was all super yummy! The kingklip was drool worthy! Beautiful setting as Well! Smokey negroni was a winner to finish it off! Definately coming back again!
Jessica Rycroft
Our new fave place!! Had an awesome evening last night at The Stack. The service, ambience, decor, food was all superb! Will def be back!
Jillian Grindley-Ferris
I think the setting is absolutely beautiful and the food is extraordinary but the service leaves much to the imagination. I'm not sure whether our waiter was new but he didn't warn us about the kitchen closing so after eating a delicious meal and wanting to order desert we were promptly told the kitchen had closed 20 minutes earlier! He was very pleasant just not very clued up.
Laetitia Crous
Awesome experience. Will definitely recommend it. Wine serving just a little bit slow
Vincent Bezuidenhout
Starters and mains were outstanding, milk tart dessert is a definite no no. It’s stodgy and unappetizing. Service levels are great and a good wine selection
Sam
The best place to visit for cocktails. They taste like a cocktail should. Friendly service from the bartenders who have great recommendations. The decor is beautiful and the fireplace was going when we visited.

The only place in Cape Town where the half price cocktails are worth the money because they actually have alcohol in it and don’t force you to have two of the same. Highly recommend especially for happy hour between 3-6pm.

Beautiful location and beautiful restaurant! Food was really good!!! Staff were friendly and very accommodating! Worth the visit if you’re ever in Cape Town!

A lovely dinning experience overall. For starters I had a wild mushroom gnocchi. As a mushroom lover I absolutely enjoyed this dish. The dish had a strong mushroom taste and the texture of the gnocchi was just right. For mains I had kingklip with a crispy layer of skin accompanied by cauliflower and a purée. This dish was full of the right fishy flavor and all the elements on the plate complimented each other well. To end I had a orange cheesecake for dessert accompanied by a citrus ice cream. The cheesecake had a nice smooth creamy consistency and a lovely way to end the meal. Others that I dined with enjoyed a spring on main course which was absolutely delicious, tender and cooked to perfection. I can’t fault the evening. A delicious meal overall!

My friend and I recently paid this Gardens-based establishment a visit and boy, were we in for a treat in more ways than one! Firstly, the interior of the brasserie and bar is very modern, yet rustic with wooden finishes that reminds one of a typical gentlemen’s club. However, I later realised that The Stack is the go-to spot for Cape Town’s young sophisticates. Secondly, the waiters are very friendly and Elvis was our waiter. Most importantly, the bar runs a daily Happy Hour special from 15:00-18:00 (except Sundays) where every cocktail costs R40. Trust me, the cocktails are AMAZING! I ordered the “Burnt Orange Old Fashioned”, “Cucumber and Basil Cooler”, and “Igwe Honey”. Needless to say, I am planning to become a regular!

Over the top service, very welcoming yet polite staff and wide selection of good wines. Everything is perfectly set for a fairy tale dinner. Naturally, one sets high expectations about the food too.

So lately I’ve been hearing a lot about this place and figured I’d finally give it a try despite the lackluster reviews.

It’s a beautiful venue! Roaring fireplace, chandeliers, quirky seating, well dressed folk - not the corporate kind, but the I’m having a fancy dinner and then going to the ballet - kind.

The prices aren’t too bad. Both my friend and I opted for the 2 course winter special at R210 each (there’s also a 3 course option, but the dessert menu had no warm choc puddings or even a creme brûlée on it, so we were not tempted to do the 3 courses).

After placing orders, our very friendly waitress, Gugulethu, brought out this massive bread basket with sliced baguette, sourdough and rosemary focaccia to choose from. I obviously asked for a slice of each. This was some really good bread!

For starters I had the mushroom gnocchi and my friend had the French onion soup. The soup had virtually no broth, 100 chopped up onions in some obscure brown sauce- not good! The gnocchi was life changing though! I could’ve easily had 3 portions of that! And the starter portions are very very generously sized.

For mains my friend opted for the sirloin steak pommes frites with béarnaise and I had the pork belly with baby brussel sprouts. The 3 drops of apple sauce on my plate was the only thing I like about the dish, but the meat itself was dry and the portion not quite the size of a main. If you’re not doing starters or desserts, then you would definitely need to add a side to this dish. But looking through the sides on offer, nothing quite matches the dish since it’s a pick between fishy broccolini, fries or salad. The steak was ok, not amazing; and the fries were limp and oily. There are too many other good steak options in Cape Town and would definitely not recommend coming here for that dish.

The food is pretty much as lackluster as most of the reviews rightly claim it to be. The bar area however looks cozy, and a few of the starters are on the bar menu. So if I ever were to return, I’d do drinks and starters at the bar.

Nestled in the Gardens area of the CBD, lush and green one could be forgiven for forgetting you were in a residential area. The Georgian architectural influence is apparent and it’s hard to believe that this very building managed to survive a very serious fire

The décor is eclectic and it’s such a serene and laid back atmosphere you can easily forget that you are In the CBD.

For starters we had:

• Potato Gnocchi, with a walnut presto and goat’s cheese

• Rabbit Terrine, which was lovely especially with the mustard seeds. I had expected it to be a little more “gamey” but it delicate and tasty.

• Gravadlax with dill crème fraiche, apple and fennel with micro greens. Having lost track of how many times I have had this course I found this version quite pedestrian. It was adequate.

• Tuna Nicoise, Tuna with green beans, baby potato, tuna mayonnaise and olive tapenade. There was a lovely sear on the tuna and by all accounts this dish was well prepared.

The main courses consisted of:

• Linefish, which was Sea bass, served with crushed baby potatoes and sauce vierge. The yellowtail had a lovely crispy skin, without drying out the fish.

• Next was the special of the day, which was Yellowtail with a Malay curry sauce. This course was really tasty, but I found the portion size to be substantially smaller than the Linefish portion.

• The springbok loin was served with the charred sour onion puree, tenderstem broccoli with a potato fondant.

• Finally, there was the Steak frites with Chalmar beef sirloin. Pommes frites and Bearnaise.

Dessert:

• There was the mango semi-fredo with candied black sesame seeds, basil gel and honey caviar.

• Smoked chocolate mousse, which I really enjoyed. Valrhona chocolate mousse with caramelia pearls chocolate sponge and pot au crème.

• Last but not least, there was the Rose crème, frangipane sponge and pistachio praline macarons.

A beautiful venue to have a relaxing dinner, or to grab a drink while you wait for the traffic to subside. I thought the courses were well presented and equally well executed.

They were full but accommodated us in the most amenable manner. Food was exquisite. Gnocchi pesto with walnuts as a starter out of this world. Steak was tender and béarnaise sauce just right with roasted cauliflower and almonds blanched in butter. The Kingklip was moist and done in a delicate sauce with butter served with unusually prepared vegetables. Finished with a chocolate mousse that would not be out of place in a Parisian establishment. Topped off with excellent service and attention. Will return again and again.Parking in the grounds.

A very promising restaurant let down by the service.

On arrival we were warmly welcomed and shown to the bar area for a pre-dinner drink. The decor is attractive and the layout makes the space very comfortable.

The starters were well prepared and very tasty. The style of food doesn’t allow for a big selection, however we enjoyed each dish.

The service was particularly bad. Disinterest from the waiting staff and a clear lack of training.

Lovely venue hidden behind the Mount Nelson, certainly worthy of a visit, secure parking is certainly a plus, one gets the old world feeling when walking up to the entrance, the welcome from the hostess is professional but friendly, managed to get a table in the bar area, from there on out was just bliss, great time was had by all, menu quite reasonably priced as well as the wine list. Love the space and can't believe it took me this long to visit, will certainly recommend.

I was a first time #Stacker this past Friday night and I can safely say it did not disappoint. Superb stylish secret venue, warm friendly welcoming service, love the eclectic pop art decor and menu (albeit a bit pricey). Great for after work drinks, meeting or game of Cards Against Humanity on a double date :-) Thank you Nigel for an evening well spent.

This is a great hidden gem- tucked in a quiet road. Great bar for after work drinks whether inside or outside. There is a great selection of cocktails to tickle the palette.
I loved the food here, they have a great menu which is well worth the price.I had the Duck confit and the lemon meringue ( which was SO MUCH MORE).
Service was really great - waiters were really attentive and knowledgeable about the menu.
Recommend for drinks, birthdays ( they have private rooms), and great for date night.
There is something about walking into The Stack that makes you feel like you are in for an experience, not just a dinner, and you would be right! The exterior and interior is absolutely stunning and the vibe and service is great. I loved walking in and everyone you meet is friendly and make you feel right at home (something few places in CT seem to get right). The let down for me personally was the food. It wasn't bad, but it also wasn't great. It feels like they care more about the decor than the food. No complaints about the food, just underwhelmed as I expected so much more from this beautiful place. Will I go back? Sure! But maybe just for some drinks and a snack :)

Went for dinner. Venue is pleasant with plenty of seating indoors and outdoors. Staff were friendly and the service was fast (it was 9pm). You need make a reservation. Unfortunately the food is not up to standards especially for the price they charge. We had the French onion soup (no complaints), the steak frites (cooked to perfection but nothing out of the ordinary) the French fries was rock hard and it didn't feel like you were eating potato!! I had the fresh fish the flavor was good enough but the fish itself was over cooked to the stage that it was rubbery and I had bones and scales to top it off!! Heard the salmon starter and the salad stack were both good from others around the table. We will not be returning.

What a gem!!!!

Service was on point; fast, efficient and friendly.

The atmosphere was just so amazing! Tranquil and elegant.

I was immediately sold with the quality of the cocktails!!!

Now... The food... I am a huge fan of fine dining and not only did they deliver, they exceeded expectations with great taste and decent quantities. The quality was exquisite!

I would definitely go back, for both the food and the cocktails!

Worthy of many returns!!!! 💯

From start to finish one of the best dining experiences I've had in Cape Town. Has its own car park so no worries about that. A warm welcome from the owner Nigel and his team as we entered the front door. We started with a quick drink at the bar upstairs, and what a stunning idea to have a members only VIP area with Bar and conference rooms. Enough of the preamble, lets get to the food. We had various starters, mains and deserts with the outstanding dishes being the lamb rump and the lemon tart. Colors, flavors and plating were exquisite and portions not too stingy or overboard. I'll add a few things photos but they don't do the food justice. I will make this place my special occasion restaurant of choice especially when family visit from overseas. Highly recommended.

Pretentious fine diner. Food was so-so, although the decor was really nice, modern and eclectic. The service was very attentive and 5-star. In the middle of Gardens and you get parking bays inside the property?! Yay-ness!

Had the food improved it will get my full point! I had Beef Bourguignon (braised shin of Angus beef) for main, flavourless braised beef as if it was rushed to get it cooked, and some fruit with chocolate for dessert (no excitement there). Both main and dessert were disappointing.
Adrian Kaplan
Lovely venue in tranquil surrounds. Have to say though that the food was okay. Not spectacular. I had the rump steak and stack salad - both were good but nothing extraordinary. The steak was the same as i would cook in my frying pan at home. Fantastic service and excellent setting so i would definitely be back and try other dishes too. My colleagues raved about their dishes.

Awesome interior, great drinks and stunning secluded city-bowl setting. Their outside courtyard will be a huge hit in summer. I didn't stay for dinner but tried a few of their cocktails. Once again, a stunning venue (with great food no-doubt) but a very average wine list. The Sangiovese was served warm, needed to be served chilled. When will top restaurants start getting wine right?

Talk about being a beautifully located restaurant and the first place that comes to mind for me is the stack. Located in gardens it has a similar kinda feel to kloof street house, but then again not really. The decor is simply stunning and my partner and I decided to have some late night drinks and dessert. They close at 11 pm which is great for a spontaneous date.

We were seated at the bar which had a fireplace roaring and welcomed by the host. They are new and she gladly explained the french bistro style of the restaurant to us. I decided to try out one of their cocktails. They are pricey at R75 but was delicious and unique with elderflower notes and bubbly.

I decided to try their creme brulee. It came in a shallow brass pan with a decadent layer of caramelised sugar on top. It was a big portion and was very tasty. We also shared the petit fours, an assortment of biscotti, truffles, meringues and pineapple jellies which were sweet and would have been perfect with some coffee. We were serviced by the bartender who was superb! Definitely keen to try out their menu.

I think i'm going to reiterate what others have said. - cool place, food is good but not wow and prices are okay-ish. Had the Bouillabaisse for starters and although the seafood was cooked to perfection, the bisque was watery and because of that i had to add alot of salt to make it taste a bit better. Mains was a whole different story - i had the pork belly and the meat and the crackling was nothing short of amazing! We had the créme brulee for dessert and i personally think the sugar layer was a bit too thick. Petit fours and coffees afterwards - wasn't bad either.
Caro Van Aardt
The decor in this place took my breath away. The owner's wife is an interior decorator, and she is responsible for this visual feast. I had the Caesar salad to start with, but also tasted my first oyster. The red wine vinegar shallots on the oyster really overpowered the fresh ocean taste of the oyster, and I would ask them to leave the trimmings off next time. For mains, I chose the plat du jour, which was the Moules Marinières. These were the biggest mussels I've ever seen, with some being the size of half my palm. The flesh, not the shell. It was a massive portion and it's obviously really rich, so I was starting to regret the starters :)
It was my birthday, so the waiter organised a little petit four for me, which was a surprise, and I still had my crème brulée on its way! Everything was truly delicious, our waiter (Elvis) was stunning, constantly making sure we all had wine and water. Other impressive dishes was the Pork Confit, the Steak Frites and the Cauliflower au Gratin. I would really love to go back here.

The Stack opened about 8 weeks ago, and I heard of it through word of mouth - has a 'Speak Easy' restaurant feel and is gaining reputation for being one the new 'it' restaurants to visit . Bar area is so cute, feels posh but has a super funky and creative feel. I had a bourbon cocktail which was fantastic ! Dinner was good, I wouldn't say the best, but I enjoyed it. My duck starter was delicious and I had steak as a main. Meat itself was ok and the sauce was rich. I would say it was good but nothing special. My husband had the French onion soup to start , which I tasted and it was also just good.. Don't ask for pepper to be added to any dish, especially the soup, as it overpowers the food completely. French cuisine, semi formal feel, worth a visit but was not blown away.
Rona-Elizabeth Evans
Unique, vibrant interior with a well thought out but simple menu. The service was great- very friendly and attentive. Highly recommend the bar area for its ambience.
Nicole Venter
Loved this restaurant - cozy bar area for pre and post dinner drinks.. We arrived by Ubergreen and the attentive car guard in their private parking lot ran to us with umbrellas.

I had a cocktail to start with (The Stack) - think G&T with rosemary/lavender/juniper berries - a bit strong flavours for my liking.

Next up I skipped starters and had the Steak & frites - perfectly done with a nice generous helping of Bearnaise. Fantastic flavours! Went well with a bottle of Newton Johnson Felicité Pinot Noir (the only Pinot Noir on the small but well thought out winelist).

For dessert - I had the amazing creme bruleé. Great consistency, lovely vanilla flavours. Could go well with the De Krans Original Cape Pink port - which is always a great find on a winelist.

After dinner drinks - some bubbly in the bar - the place was still pumping when we left after 23:00.
Laura Erasmus
Well worth a visit! We stopped for lunch at this fab new restaurant and bar. I had the mouthwatering Kingklip and the signature "Stack cocktail" - a rosemary and lavender take on the classic G&T. I loved the quirky yet classy feel of the place, and the attentive but friendly staff impressed me. We will be back to try out the dinner menu!

Beautiful brasserie in a historical building. I absolutely loved the steak tartare and as a main steak with pommes. Everyone at our table enjoyed their dishes. Very very friendly priced. Will be back to try all dishes
