Absolutely delicious vegan food! The smokey jalapeño rellenos with cashew cheese were amazing! As well as the vegan artichoke quesadilla, and very authentic frozen margarita. Good sized portion too, and great service! Will definitely be back
Fantastic Vegan Menu – I can't wait to come back and try the other dishes on there. My husband had the line fish off the regular menu – he was also very happy. Great vibe, delicious food! PS Would love to see a vegan dessert, please!
Brilliant experience. Excellent food, amazing service. The calamari is insane. The pulled pork carnitas were out of this world. The smokey chilli poppers were simply the best I've ever been served. Will be back again and again and again.
Really enjoyed the orange and mint margarita - nice place, food, and staff
Such delicious food...my word!! And tequila tasting very interesting...hostess great and Nic such a gentleman..well done guys you rock!! Best Mexican I've ever had
Had amazing margaritas and the starter Chiviche amazing!!!! And fish tacos. Thanks to hosts great evening out and drinks and food was great! Can highly recommend!
Absolutely terrific. The food and service were impeccable. A nice gem well hidden away. Angela, the manager provided stellar service. She even got us an Uber with a failed phone and stayed with us until it arrived.
My absolute favourite! Excellent food and on top of it all, environmentally responsible - no straws here!
Please open your Newlands restaurant on Saturdays and Sunday's! I am always so disappointed when I can't satisfy my Sunday lunch Mexican craving!

It was my 1st experience there, thanks to a friend of mine that suggested the place. I enjoyed the Chunky Guacamole and Tortilla chips as starter and Steak Quesadilla. Thanks to the friendly ladies who served us ,pity they didn't have name tags.
Aaaaaaaamaaaazing. Great food. Great staff. Great drinks. Great speed. Looooved it. Come to Norway
Really great vibe, food (especially the traditional mexican dish) and service! Loved it, something totally different. We willl be back!
Had my birthday dinner there last Friday - food, drinks, ambience and service was excellent! Highly recommend. Can't wait for the one in Newlands to open
Cocktails are great & very well priced. Do yourself a favour & order the chocolate fondant for dessert. Probably the best I've had in Cape Town!!

Had an AWESOME lunch there today. Love the vegan menu. Great service from Emily. It was my third visit ( twice in Green Point and once in Newlands).

We visited El Burros in Green Point on Saturday night and just loved the Mexican food experience and friendly ambiance of the place. The service was excellent. We will definitely be back.

The service was great, the drinks yummy, the main meals everything I hoped it would be and the dessert moorish (I could have eaten 2 portions). I will be back soon, that is for sure.
Delicious, if overpriced. Fantastic decor, excellent food. Plenty of vegan options for every course. Really fabulous tacos and comprehensive drinks menu.
I found out about this restaurant after some research online. We (3 friends and I) were looking for a restaurant that was great as well as had a reasonable number of vegetarian options. The seating here was on the balcony with a wonderful view of the roadside and a park nearby. It was very serene looking at night. Service was quick and friendly. We had arrived here at around 9 pm and the atmosphere was quite lively. They have gone to great lengths to create Mexican decor and the lighting added to it. So full marks for ambiance. I personally did not find the food very good. We ordered the Horchata and Agua Fresca in drinks. Their taste was very true to the description provided in the menu but was quite plain. We also ordered Enchiladas and Quesadillas. They were not bad but were lacking the spice that we probably are used to back home in India. They have a good collection of liquors.
All in all, amazing ambiance and above average food. Also, an ideal venue for a date night!
Recently moved to Cape town and was on the prowl for some Mexican food, cocktails and ambiance - this place certainly met my checklist.
Well priced cocktails all tequila based. Ceviche starter was a pleasing portion size - personally too much coriander. Squid was perfectly cooked; had a surprising chilli kick which was delightful when combined with a squeeze of lemon.
My partner had the chicken mole which he described as a flavoursome chicken curry with coco undertones.
Great service our waitress Inga (I think) was friendly and informative.
Will definitely go back!

The atmosphere is very pleasant and the staff adds to the great experience. The food is well prepared and serving timing is good. Great Tequila drinks and besides not being able to relate to the real mccoy, the tastes took us to Mexico. FYI, if you dont like corriander, be sure to mention it as they use it in everything!
We loved El Burro. Thanks to all the other reviews I read before, I chose the pulled pork taco and was not disappointed. Delicious, with such tasty toppings. The corn starter was spot on with coriander and lime flavours coming through and I didn't pass at the opportunity to have a margarita. Typical Mexican decor. Lovely and we will be back!
My favourite Mexican in Cape Town! El Burro has the tastiest and most authentic Mexican around. They also have an awesome selection of beer and a full vegan menu. It has a good vibe to it, and you can sit out on the balcony for a fun Summer's evening with friends.
Great vibe, great food, good service. Try the soft or hard tacos with any filling, and make sure you book if you plan on going between Thursday - Saturday.
Try the tequila bar (Cabrito) below for a drink before or after dinner.
Food great! Drinks great! Ambience great! Decor great! Service fantastic! Definitely going here again! Best Mexican food I’ve eaten in Cape Town and such a lovely place to meet up with friends.
Amazing food! This place knows what it’s doing! Great cocktails with interesting flavour combinations. The best service from a super-friendly complement of staff. Wonderful atmosphere and décor. The best night at a restaurant in a long time!
Service: very friendly & helpful.
Food: very tasty, many vegan but minimal nice vegetarian (with cheese) options.
Cocktails: delicious.
Atmosphere: vibey, fun.
El Burro was incredible from start to finish! The atmosphere was great. It was busy for a later dinner crowd; and somehow our food and drinks were always fast and brought with a smile. The guacamole is great and they have a very large vegan/vegetarian menu. We will be back!
This branch of the Mexican string of restaurants is very intimate but vibey at the same time. It has a great ambience with its candlelit atmosphere with small tables seating people in their 20s mainly.
The service was good with the waitress trying to cater to the dietary needs of my two fellow dining companions which is rare at restaurants these days.
The food was absolutely delicious - I ordered the Pork Carnito and the margharitas are good too. I would recommend this place to anyone with an appetite for Mexican flavours as it is one of the best in Cape Town.
Authentic Mexican cuisine makes for unforgettable experiences. The scene is semi-formal, the friends are self-brought. I've missed out before so I'd make a booking..
We waited far too long to try this awesome restaurant, and when we finally got there we were extremely happy with our visit.
The decor is excellent, it’s on theme but not the usual cheap and cheerful stuff you so often see at Mexican restaurants. This is more stylish and upmarket, which we appreciated.
We went at an extremely quiet time for a midweek lunch, so i can’t really speak much about the atmosphere other than to say that the layout and furniture do lend themselves to a social and relaxed environment where I can imagine many good times.
The service was really good. We expected that the waitress would be attentive given how quiet it was, but she was also super friendly, helpful and pleasant.
The food was also fantastic. The jalapeños that we had for starters were better than the usual poppers that are now common in Cape Mexican restaurants.
The mains were also from good to great and one of the dishes is now my absolute favorite Mexican dish of all that I have tried.
We will most certainly be back, hopefully sooner than later.
The food was amazing, one of the best things I have eaten... the portion size was tiny and the price was steep so ask about portion size if you are hungry.
Despite the fact 90% of the tables were empty - the manager told us we can eat at the bar only. After I pulled my mobile to check on my Zomato app for other restaurant suddenly there were free table for us.
This place is above average in food quality. Nice atmosphere to dine.
El Burro is the first Mexican restaurant iv been to in South African and I was pleasantly surprised. The jalapeño poppers had a really nice smokey flavour and stuffed with a sufficient amount of queso fresco. The squid starter however, was a bit of a let down and lacked flavour. We also had the build your own pulled pork taco which was AWESOME. The service was really good considering there were about 20 of us at the table and we didn’t have to wait long for our food at all. The decor is modern yet simple and definitely a vibey place to go and sip on a few margaritas. Highly recommended and I will definitely be back.
A little more of a formal sit down dining experience that the Taqueria counterpart in Tamboerskloof. If you really want authentic Mexican cuisine, then El Burro will always impress. You really cannot go wrong with the food in this place.
They also have an tequila and mescal menu that will make any agave fan squeal with delight.
Conveniently placed in the centre of Greenpoint within walking distance from the stadium and the V&A Waterfront. This is not a Mexican restaurant to be missed in Cape Town.
Renu Dubey Best quality Mexican food in Cape Town! Tried their Esquites, Taquitos, Falafel Taco and Exotic Mushroom and White Bean Quesadilla, all were amazing in taste. I'd go to El Burro every time I visit Cape Town, it's so good!
My first time here, long overdue.. And so worth it.. The only thing is, I feel at night the vibe, will be much better with their decor.. We were there in the early afternoon.. Great, friendly service, best homemade margarita eva!!.. Not like that other horrid slush u get at the fat place, (R240/jug) & it works hehe. We tried an assortment of yummy taco dishes and the calamari was a big win too(Lime/chilli/coriander).. Nice to have a taste bud sensation again... I will see you again.. I da eve.. And a Uber :-)
Definitely my favourite Mexian restaurans in town!! Waitress was so friendly and so patient to explain all types of food. The atmosphere was great! Would definitely go visit again soon!
I always make a point of coming here at least once every time I'm in Cape Town. The wood-smoked chili rellenos are packed with flavor, as is everything else on the menu.
Tastiest margaritas in town ,whether it be frozen or simply shaken.Their fallafel tacos served with guacamole and salsa is simply heaven on earth and chilli poppers will have you hot for more. The churros were so delicious and fresh, the cinnamon really comes through when served with the ice cream .
Good Mexican food and cocktails. I would say their ceviche is one of the best menu items. Otherwise I like to order flour tortillas with guacamole and refried beans to keep it simple. A lot of there more complicated dishes are expensive and not necessarily so great anyways
My husband and I have gone to El Burro a couple of times in the past and I've always enjoyed it. (It's his favourite Mexican restaurant.) But last night was exceptionally good. My tamarind margarita cocktail was surprisingly delicious and my pork carnitas had me making sounds of pleasure. Absolutely delicious. In addition, service was quick and our waitress was friendly. Can't wait to go back.
Stunning restaurant with a beautiful ambiance. The smoked jalapenos were to die for!! The mushrooms quesadillas were slightly disappointing but that could definitely be because of my preconceived idea of quesadillas. :) service was incredible, sweet, helpful waitresses with awesome smiles on their faces. Such a cool night, will return soon!
This past cold Saturday night in search of some delicious international flavours to warm up the soul, El Burro inspired and provided. Not to our surprise the warm, inviting setting was full and lively, making the evening feel like a well-organised dinner party.
We started with the chilli rellenos, and before we could make our way through half the smokey, cheese filled jalapenos, our spiced chocolate chicken poblano and steak tacos (corn flour - which was great) arrived. The service was nothing short of pitch perfect and the management is like clockwork and I can't wait to go back.
Oh yes, also, definitely try the horchata congelado (with coconut liqueur and tequila).
Always keen to go to el burro. Great setting vibe and friendly waiters that we're super attentive. I had the chicken quesadilla,it was delicious and loved that it had more sauce than your usual quesadilla. My friend had the chorizo quesadilla and it was quite the opposite. Served almost taco style and very dry. On a follow up visit they didn't have the chicken one so I opted for the steak quesadilla and it didn't live up to my previous choose. Lacked in flavour and very bland. I don't enjoy that you have to order guacamole as an extra especially when the mains are already quite pricey. They make a good frozen margarita too if you're keen on tequila. Book in advance especially for dinner.
The vibe in there is awesome! The food great! We had pan seared squid as starters 👌! For mains we had chicken mole poblano and steak quesadilla, very tasty! And to top it off the Churro sticks which you should defiantly try!! Service was very good tooo! 😊
Amazing place.. I always feel like I'm in Mexico when I walk in cos it's so dam hot inside.. #birthdaysuit. Maybe just me. Most likely just me. But the food here is wonderful. Spicey and Hot, like my woman. Of course the Tequilas are great there. If your in the area and feel like screaming " Andale Andale Arriba Arriba" defining give this place a try u won't be disappointed.
Really authentic mexican restaurant. I had the pork carnitas taco and i was impressed, it was delicious. We had a couple of their house margarita jugs and they went down great! Their Tequila selection was excellent, and coming from a Tequila hater, i actually enjoyed the flavours. The decoration and setting of the restaurant was amazing, the outfits the waitresses wear are strange but add to the authentic feel!
Once you’ve walked up the stairway and into the doors of El Burro, you feel like you’ve entered another world... with warm colors and festively decorated walls. Each of the tables had candlelight, which added to the ambiance of the restaurant giving it a warm cozy feel. The service was attentive, despite the restaurant being so busy!
The cocktails were delicious and packed a punch! For starters we had the Cheviche, which is chopped line fish, with lime, ginger, chili and coriander served with nacho chips. It was so fresh and delicious and left us wanting more!
For mains we had the steak quesadilla and the pork tacos, both of which were a hit. For dessert we had the Churros which was served with a rich dark chocolate sauce, it was the perfect way to end the night!
Love love love, the food was Devine, the service was excellent. We make our own tacos and I had their fish taco, wow, it was delicious. Even my 3 yrs daughter enjoyed the fish, it was seasoned well and the cooked to perfection. Definitely my favorite Mexican place in SA.
True Mexican Style food! The Chilli Margarita's are aaaamazing. Service was super fast and friendly. Great vibe - this place is doing something right! Had the Chorizo Quesadillas - super yuuum! Will be back for more!
One of the most authentic Mexican restaurants one can eat at. And that's coming from a Mexican citizen himself! He recommended i tried the Chicken Mole, and it was absolutely no disappointment. The subtle have hint of the chocolate was a new experience for me when it comes to eating chicken! Unfortunately they were out of linefish which was a bit of a let down, but staff and service were excellent
Had a great family evening at El Burro. Not our first time and pleased to report that standards have not slipped and if anything improved.
Love the decor and ambience. Sets mood perfectly for a party.
Staff are well trained, friendly and professional.
We started with a couple of margaritas and soon upgraded to a jug 😀
For starters we shared esquites- Mexican style street snack, char-grilled corn Parmesan butter with lime and chilli salt.
Mains were chicken quesadilla, chorizo quesadillas. Then grilled chicken tacos, steak quesadilla. Served with all the Mexican dips and wonderful other things.
No dessert.
A truly wonderful Mexican fest.
A friend recommended El Burro to me and it was a little bit overrated. I had the chorizo quesadilla and my partner had the 'HOT!' steak quesadilla (which wasn't hot at all). The Paloma Grapefruit cocktail was nice & refreshing. I loved their lime sauce and the best part of the night was the Churros with chocolate dipping sauce. Considering they are not too cheap, I probably won't go back and eat there, but the Churros are worth while.
Very tasty food!!! :) loved the fish and vegetarian taco! The service was good! Didn't like the strawberry margarita - it had a herb which was overbearing for me personally. Other than that I definately recommend :)

Always love to go for a quick bite and drink. I always go for the "build your own" meal. Fresh, flavourful, variety and diffent. The staff is alwys friendly and all dressed up in their mexican outfits. And if you love tequila.... this is your spot next time for dinner! #mexican #tacos #veganoptions #tequila #greenpoint #spicy #unique #nightout El Burro
A delightful restaurant found by chance. Some really tasty food and great service. Close to the Cape Town stadium. Jalapeño poppers were enhanced with a smoky flavour. The enchiladas and tacos were also delicious.
Took the parents out for birthday celebrations and their first experience at El Burro, Greenpoint. We all had the best evening with the best food and unreal service. Huge shoutout to Lara and the rest of the crew for a fantastic job! See you again soon!
Ok, great space and decor looks like the business. Staff are all over you like you are Kanye West and the house wine is not kak quality. But here is the but, I really think everything food wise is not worth it, I mean it's tasty for the 3 bites you get out of it, come on guys, it's Mexican, which means to much food for a single person. Anyway, great date night vibe and to empress your friends. Will defs be back but with a pre snack maybe.
It's very expensive for what you get. Three average sized tacos will set you back R130. I had the fish tacos which were pretty decent. Although when it said "on a bed of slaw" I thought they meant cole slaw. But actually it's on a bed of chopped pineapple. Not exactly what I was hoping for. They layered the sweet chili way too heavily.
The strawberry margarita was okay. Except every time I had a sip I also got a mouthful of leaves. They should consider not chopping it so finely.
Went to the new Newlands branch having never been to either of them before. There's no liquor license yet so feel free to take your own wine and beer. We had their sweet potato, corn, and renellos to start - all were divine. For my mains I had Mexico's main dish which was an interesting combination of chicken, dark chocolate, tomato, re fried beans, and green rice. It was incredibly tasty and overall I was so pleased to enjoy authentic Mexican without that deep fried / unhealthy feel.
I can't stop raving about this place, from decor to service to food were excellent. We popped in for dessert and drinks. The waitress recommended a Mexican fruit drink made with pineapple which I jus loved. I ordered the dark chocolate fondant, I have never tasted anything so good. Every mouthful tasted like heaven. Definitely a must try!!!
We decided to get some dessert at el burro in green point - so frikking good!
Our waitress was sweet and attentive. It felt like she really went to extra mile which was appreciated. We had some pineapple drink I can't remember the name and then a fondant and churros - the fondant was faultless but my churros were slightly hard. Waseem had a coffee, it tasted as if the beans were slightly burnt. The atmosphere was really enjoyable and I'm definitely returning
Oh el burro.. i absolutely loved it. Those lamb tacos were the bomb! Great service, great tacos and also great margueritas! It was an awesome surprise to be walking in greenpoint and finding this great mexican place!
Delicious Mexican styled foods in a fun, vibey and friendly decorated space. They have a decent sized menu. They have all the spicey, beany, and meaty staples with some fun alternative options. The menu lends itself greatly to ordering a bunch of different flavours/textures and sharing.
Their frozen margaritas are so fabulous you will forget how much you have drunk.
Let's not forget their desserts are epic.
I love this place for three reasons: awesome location with a separate bar downstairs. Great food. Friendly waitstaff with pretty dresses.
I come here two days in a row and the waitress recognizes me. Their tequila infused cocktails are quite good! Ceviche is my fav. Tacos also flavorful. I prefer it over the Perron in Joburg.
Well done, El Burro!
This is an excellent spot for delicious tapas and some very tasty Mexican style dishes! On my last visit (on a whim) I tried the line fish ceviche which was fantastic - definitely recommended if you're a seafood fan. I regularly get the build your own taco's - I have found the line fish and chicken to be absolute stand outs. Lovely place with a surprisingly tranquil upstairs balcony, beautiful views of the stadium and service that you can't fault!
The restaurant is highly recommended and I think the service was amazing but certain dishes were ok! The calamari was excellent the corn was also good. The fish tacos were ok and the chicken enchiladas were tasty but the chicken was dry and like leather. The Churros were the worst I have every had, the best mojitos!!!
They were out of almost everything we wanted to order, but it was 29 December so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. The food that they did have, was very good, and so were the cocktails. Mostly, it's a very warm, vibey and beautiful restaurant. We had a really good time there.
Some of the best Mexican food you can get in Cape Town. El Burro is always full and loud and has a great atmosphere. The service fast and friendly. Cocktails are divine and everything on the menu is good, from salads to tacos to dessert. And you can go to Cabrito downstairs after for some tequila ;)
This is casual Mexican fare at it's best! I just love El Burro. The good is great: tasty and simple with loads of variety on the menu. Not too pricey and a great atmosphere.
If you have been here once, you will be back and looking out for off-shoots, other branches and that food truck! A great taste experience.
Great dining experience, the waiters all wear cute outfits that fit in with the Mexican theme. Loved the churros which I had for dessert and all of the food was delicious.
The food was great, nice vibe and really fantastic service! Lovely spot that I really enjoyed, and most definitely recommend! Only one small issue with my food that was very well handled by the management, otherwise the rating would have been a 5...
Great restaurant, I utterly enjoyed my dinner. Best enchiladas ever !!!! I had some funny tequila and my partner in crime enjoyed the vibe of the place. Thumbs up ;)
Went here tonight after much anticipation. Started off with a pineapple and chilli margarita which was a unique cocktail. I had the grilled fish tacos which was delicious, despite me initially being circumspect about the papaya salsa that accompanied it. Finished off with churros and chocolate fondant which was shared amongst us which were both great. I feel like the fondant just edges the churros though. Overall a really enjoyable night out!
The dessert was so good we ordered two rounds!
We were initially cautious to come as we have heard mixed reviews, not to mention the one time they called us to cancel our reservation (not chuffed). But we were pleasantly surprised! The food was amazing! We ordered different foods and just ate from each! The pork belly tacos are exquisite as is the chicken mole!! Please visit this beautiful restaurant so you can make up your own mind!!
For this place i should have posted pics. However the food was spectacular. The best Mexican spot i have been to. Flavour unique decor and atmosphere. My daughter was with me and she could build her own taco which was great - interactive dining. Back for more, hell yes
My partner and I visited El Burro earlier in the year. We had a Mexican fest. The food is authentic and delicious. The cocktails is good too.
We ordered the vegetarian and chicken quesadilla. It was absolutely divine. The actual quesadilla was light and soft, the filling inside was absolutely delicious. I actually wanted to lick my plate at the end. Yes, yes I know its not allowed.
I love the views when dining here and the feel of the restaurant. It feels like you are in Mexico. Oh and did I mention the tequila was great too?
Was quite impressed with this restaurant. We were on one of our Zomato ventures and ended up here.
The theme is well executed, the waiters are bubbly and friendly and the food is absolutely delicious.
We ordered the chicken quesadillas and churros. Both the main and dessert was amazing! Although I would've liked more quesadillas as we received only two for R110, it tasted good and the churros were accompanied with a hearty amount of chocolate.
They close at 11:30pm which is great especially if you're on a late night mission! Definitely my favorite Mexican restaurant!
Absolutely delicious Chilorio pork tacos, great winelist and really attentive, awesome service from all the staff. Cool vibey atmosphere but can still have a conversation and relax.
I'm a huge Lover of Mexican Food and El Burro really exceeded my expectations! Instead of the Grubby, overloaded-with-cheese Mexican dishes, their dishes were fresh, wholesome and extremely tasty! will definitely visit this place again!
El Burro is a Mexican gem - the atmosphere is warm and friendly, the food is absolutely delicious, the staff are polite and the desert is amazing. El Burro is definitely worth a visit if you feel like a cozy night out with good food.
Firstly, El Burro is noisy when it is busy, and you need to book to get a table. So not a place to go if you want to catch up with someone you haven't seen in a long time! Other than that, AMAZING. Absolutely love the food and the tequila selection is incredible. Mescal margaritas are the bomb. Flavours are a bit smoky, but I love that, and everything tastes fresh. Service can be a bit slow at times, but mostly it is good. Vibey place with great decor and tasty food!
Festive, delicious and a great night. The lamb tacos are definitely the ones to go for. Definitely won't disappoint and the frozen margaritas are the perfect combo. Very good vibe, great service and delicious food. Quite pricey for what you get.
Lekker lekker
I'm a little late with this review, but I still felt I needed to mention this experience.
Almost two weeks ago, I made a booking for 9 people for a Saturday afternoon for my birthday. I was told I got their last table and we could just add a chair to the end to fit the 9th person, which was fine with me. I was also told that they were going to squeeze another table in after us, at 19:00, which was also fine with me.
When I arrived at the restaurant (15:00), my table was not prepared, but I didn't sweat it and took one of the big booths and waited for my guests to arrive. We got the party started, drinks and food were ordered, and we were really enjoying ourselves. Meanwhile, we were the only occupied table, save for two tables outside on the balcony. So much for being "fully booked".
The food was really scrumptious, and the cocktails truly delicious. The place has a really cool vibe and the service was quick and effective during our meal.
Then, suddenly, just after 17:00, our waitress informed us that we had to be out by 18:00, as there was to be a private function starting at 18:00. They had no idea what I was talking about when I said the person who confirmed my booking that same morning said we only needed to leave before 19:00. So we finished our drinks and left with a little sour taste in our mouths. It was my first time visiting El Burro and I've only ever heard good things, but they were totally unprepared for us, and asking us to leave earlier than was agreed upon, was a really bad turn for me. I'd like to go back for the tasty food, but I'll think twice before actually doing it.
The Chilario Pork Tacos are divine! Service is a bit slow and I'm not sure why they only give you like 3 tacos as the pork quantity is way more than the amount of tacos you receive. Love this place!
Finally managed to make my way to the famous El Burro. I've been to their other branch, The Taqueria, many times and have generally had great experiences!
The atmosphere was super chilled and inviting, very similar in style to the Taqueria (obviously). Very colourful. Lots of fun details. Really cool.
The food was amazing! Super tasty Grilled Tuna Taco special with a fresh fruity salsa. My partner had the Chilorio Pork build your own tacos! Both were good, but I think I won the night taste wise! No food envy for me!
The service started amazing, but as we got there late, we started seeing our waitress less and less as the night progressed. I think she lost interest a bit towards the end of the night. But overall the manager and staff were all really friendly and helpful! Love their fun outfits too!
Will definitely be back to try some of the other interesting things on their menu!
El Burro has a certain appeal to it, great decor and you're guaranteed a great vibe, hence making a booking is essential (request a booth if you can, which I think is the best :))
They have a good menu, and don't expect typical 'tex mex' options like burritos, as they have authentic Mexican options. I chose the DIY fajitas with chicken. It's fun to make and the flavours are superb. Others had the enchiladas with pulled chicken, and steal quesadilla. All we're good, but in my opinion the portion sizes could be more generous, as a few if us were left hungry. Especially for the price you pay because it's not cheap.
Next time I'd try something different, and like to try the churros for dessert :)
This was a difficult one for me to rate since it's neither bad nor great. But the service, food and ambience wasn't average either. Our food was delicious, although I felt it lacked freshness for mexican cuisine. And the flavors are a bit westernized for my personal expectations. Also a bit pricey for what you get. Would consider this an almost great, but will return.
As a fan of Mexican food, El Burro is always a favourite. I went to a 40th birthday there on a busy Saturday night and we were treated like royalty. As we were a very large group, we were given a set menu - but we weren't starved for choice! My highlights - sweet potato & feta taquitos and the chickpea & cauliflower tacos. Also, the Cabrito tequila is heavenly! Service was impeccable, even though there were so many of us.

The tacos are really good! Nice options from beef, pork and chicken! Nachos and chilly poppers make a nice starter and can finish off the meal with some tasty churros!
For our first night in Cape Town, Kieran Usher and I decided to try El Burro. Firstly the interior was incredible! Colorful walls decorated with Mexican artifacts get you feeling festive the moment you walk through the door! Unaware of the size of the much talked about margarita jug, we ordered one to share between to two of us! It was well worth it (not so worth it the next morning though😂) The starters and mains were just delicious!! Very authentic and not a dish we felt was average. We shared all our dishes and it seems like this would be a really fun place to take a big group of people and order many dishes for the table to get a taste of everything on the menu, because every dish really does have a unique flavour. What I can recommend is ordering the churos and not letting anyone even glance at yours because they are far too good to share! The service is superb and you never have to look around for service. A definite must try for a fun night out!
So happy I chose to celebrate my birthday at El Burro. The little things they do, from the waitresses uniforms to the reserved sign blends in to their theme and look, adding to your experience. We were a biggish table and a tad squeezed in a booth, but our waitress was great and really friendly.
My boyfriend and I shared the chilli rellenos, which were nice, but the smokeyness comes through a little too much. For mains I had the Enchilada rojo and couldn't manage to finish it, it was just what I imagined and spicy, but not hot which I like. Finished off with churros and chocolatey goodness mmm.
If you enjoy mexican I would suggest making a plan to visit them :)
Always a favorite when in the area, no frills, you know what you are getting. Service can be very slow, but mostly due to it getting very busy
I've always loved El Burro but admittedly I probably don't come here as often as I'd like to. My boyfriend and I came through for date night, which was wonderful as his never been before. We took a chance and didn't book and luckily there was 1 table available on arrival - I'd say to be on the safe side, book rather.
As usual, the food was amazing right from the starters through to the mains. We tried their poppers and the sweet potato taquitos for starters - divine!! I feel like I could've just kept popping them into my mouth for the rest of the evening. Mains carried on pleasing the taste buds, where I ordered the build your own tacos and my boyfriend selected the chorizo quesadilla. The build your own taco concept is super fun and I'd definitely suggest this if it's your first time visiting.
Be sure to give the margarita's a go as well - that's also super fun!
Had a table on the balcony . Table for 8 . Without exception everybody was very happy with their meal . The service was excellent . The steak was outstanding and the mojito was not too shabby . Will I be back ? Definitely !
Love this place. I have been here a couple of times and have never been disappointed.
Service was amazing. Kim, our waitress was very friendly and attentive.
We had jalapeño poppers for starters. Absolutely delicious. Love the way El Burro makes them. Smoked with cheese filling. Much more healthier option compared to how they are usually made with the deep-fried flour coating. Our mains were absolutely delicious too. And to my surprise, it was more spicy than usual. Loved it. We also had cocktails which were amazing too.
Exceptional service and lovely food! We had a birthday dinner here and staff was amazingly accommodating! Great atmosphere! Highly recommended!
Right, so a while ago we were gifted by the owner a voucher based on a previous mishap at another branch, so we decided to use it last night for Valentines Day and honestly it was one of the best meals we've had and by FAR, the best service we had. Our waitress Amy Ray, was exceptional. She was friendly, attentive and gave great suggestions in terms of food options. We chose the pan seared calamari, tanquitos and the carne cerviche as starters, the chicken 'build your own' tacos and steak quesadillas. And washed it all down with a bottle of De morgenzon MCC. The atmosphere and ambience was romantic and intimate and we would return in a heartbeat! Big thanks to Nic Haarhoff El Burro
The restaurant is well positioned in Greenpoint right across the road from the Cape Town Stadium. This place is all about authentic Mexican food that is light, fresh and packed with flavour.
The vibe is funky and trendy with a cosy atmosphere and great décor – quirky mirrors, Mexican furnishings and wooden touches here and there. The balcony has a great view and there are heaters and blankets - perfect for those chilly evenings.
The waitresses are consistent & friendly and they seem to know just what to do to ensure smooth service all the time.
I decided on a build-your-own tortillas. The Chilorio pork is a twice cooked pork shoulder with Mexican Arbol chilli. This is served with a tray of fresh accompaniments. This is spicy and every bite will delight and excite your palate with their flavoursome combinations and fresh ingredients. You can also choose between flour or corn torillas.
I sampled the Pork Carnitas - 3 corn torillas topped with spicy tomato, twice roasted pulled pork and 3 different salsas. Delicious and just a taste sensation!
For dessert we shared a decadent oozy Chocolate Fondsnt served with vanilla ice cream and Churros served with chocolate dipping sauce. Definitely worth the visit.
Apart from Chinese, Mexican is my next favorite. I totally love a good burrito. But a burrito is probably an Americanized dish. El Burro is traditional Mexican. I have been here a few times and never disappointed
The flavors are amazing. The different textures with each dish is amazing. Before I get into the review let me say this... If you had an accident as a child and cannot experience flavor (trust me there are people out there who don't know flavor if it came and punched them in the face) then El burro should revive you palate.
We booked over the phone and when we arrived we were escorted to our table on the balcony. I've sat out here before and on a wintery night it wasn't cold. The decor is very aged which is indicative of the building but this is so not in a bad way. There wine/ beer list very good with a good variety of choices.
We ordered the build your own, twice cooked pork shoulder tacos and Mexican chorizo tacos. Both were flavor bombs. Full of heat but rich meaty flavors.
We ended finishing the meal with a chocolate fondant and curros. Both were pretty good. The fondant was oozy and chocolately.
Service is professional, friendly and relaxed in good way.
I throughly enjoyed the experience.
Great food (the pork carnitas are superb as well as the jalapeños rellos) great beer and friendly staff. Not much more you can ask for. Will definitely be back!
Amazing Mexican food! It's such a beautiful spot with a vibey atmosphere. The menu is to the point, with great dishes. The portions are large enough for two people to share. The chicken enchiladas are amazing! Definitely worth a visit if you are a fan of Mexican cuisine.
Probably one of my favorite places to visit for a great meal out. First time I came there was on a date with my girlfriend, and I must say I was blown away by the slightly dimmed but yet alluring and in some way romantic atmosphere. With waitresses all wearing superb outfits, it really made me feel as though I was on a journey rather than just an eating experience. The staff is brilliant, cuisine is stunning; tried many things on the menu and was never disappointed! If you want to go to Mexico but can't afford to or don't have the time, just step in to El Burro and you'll have an experience worth remembering and sharing about.
Also, if you are just keen to try some Tequilas or grab a beer; they have a bar downstairs. Their tequila menu is vast and the price range is fair.
Love El Burro! You can always count on them for great food, drinks, service and vibe!
To drink Sashen had the house red wine and I had the chilli and pineapple margarita - my favourite, love the kick of chilli through the tequila.
For starters we had the Chilli Rellenos which was spicy and delicious.
For mains I had my usual chicken quesadilla and Sashen had the chicken tacos from the "build you own section". Both dishes were thoroughly enjoyed.
Last but not least: dessert, El Burro's churro's are such winners. I can never get enough of them 😄
Best Mexican in Cape Town!
If you are looking for an authentic Mexican experience in the heart of Cape Town, El Burro is your best bet. From the waitresses outfits to the cuisine, it does not disappoint.
The food caters for everyone from vegans to those looking for a meaty plate of nachos. Don't go here expecting cheesy nachos, rather those that look like you're in Mexico enjoying a plate on the shores of Cancun.
Last night I visited El Burro for dinner as I was craving something tasty and spicy. We did not make a reservation and even though they were fully booked, they still happily accommodated my friend and I. I was impressed with the decor and liveliness of the restaurant which really brought out a Mexican feel. Our waitress was so friendly and helpful as she helped us choose our drinks according to what our taste buds preferred.
I ordered the Wild Berry & Mint Margarita as I prefer a sweet cocktail, while my friend ordered a Krystal Weiss beer. The cocktail was good, mixed well and I also thought that all drinks were priced well and not too expensive. I hesitated to order wine as I did not recognize any of the wind brands in their wine list. However they do have an extensive drinks menu.
We were quite hungry so we skipped starters and went straight to mains. We ordered the Chicken Quesadilla and Enchiladas Rojo. We thoroughly enjoyed both meals. They were presented well, the portions were a good size for what they were worth, and the food was hot and fresh! Both the quesadilla and enchilada had a similar taste, however I would have preferred it to be a bit more spicy. Nonetheless, I added some of their spicy sauce that did the job. Between the two meals, I definitely preferred the chicken quesadilla.
I had a lovely time at El Burro and will visit again to try more of their cocktails and meals.
We tried this Mexican restaurant and we directly fell in love!
The design is typical for Mexico, but not that design you expect.
The staff is good organized and very friendly!
The choices for drinks and food are very various and you can’t decide. You want to try everything!
There are a lot of veggie versions available.
Prices are decent, but the servings of the main courses are quite small. So order 2-3 different meals.
If we would live here, then we would enjoy this restaurant each week!
Great job!
Food was outstanding. My favourite was the pork and pineapple taco. The tacos were so fresh and all the ingredients. Service was impeccable. Margaritas were very nice but needed more tequila :P I would highly recommend and return
Delicious Mexican food, vegan options are super tasty too! Super friendly service! Tried different tacos and enchiladas 😍
Lovely all-round experience in a cute quaint restaurant. The food was good and margaritas were great as well. Just wish it was bigger as it kind of gets a bit busy in the evening. But great overall!🌮🍹
Nice Mexican restaurant if you’re craving fresh flavors, all the dishes were delicious- tacos, quesadillas, enchiladas were all great. Cocktails were good. Only complaint was the server was really rushing us and it wasn’t busy, taking our drinks away without asking when they weren’t gone and asking if we wanted another one
Small spot and a little crowded. I had to sit in a corner where it was I felt crowded but at least I had a seat. Food was really good. I wouldn't call it authentic Mexican but a good designer Mexican food experience. The tacos I had were very tasty and the mixed drinks were done nicely
Great place for Mexican tapas. Cosy. Homely atmosphere Fantastic service. Decor reminded us of the 2027 movie Coco.
Was amazing! I went there with a friend’s group. The place is very welcoming and charming. The food is delicious! The fish taco, wow! 😋😋😋. I recommend 🌷
Perfect veg Mexican enchiladas with an amazing Mexican cinnamon drink! This combinations was absolutely enjoyable. The ladies did a wonderful service, interiors were beautiful and music played inside simply the best. Absolutely worth a visit!
Always a lovely spot. No bookings accepted, so it feels freeing to just walk up and get a seat and have a lovely meal.
Amazing service, and the attentive care is evident throughout.
Food was stunning, all three dishes we ordered.
Cocktails were dissapointing. Both the cocktails were weak and tasted watered down. That aspect of the experience requires care, the only aspect that does
