Review Carne (kloof) - Cape Town Central

Carol Clegg
Wonderful attentive service. An interesting wine list with a good choice of vintage wines. Very tasty steak, lamb chops, and the best fried potatoes. All together, a very pleasant evening

Great experience. We shared the trio of game meat (black wildebeest, kudu, springbok), I had picanha rump, all top class, good wine (we had local wines). They have a good selection of whisky too. The service was fantastic: efficient, fast, the way you would expect (thank you Joseph!). The owner, Gorgio came to talk to us, fantastic atmosphere! Highly recommended!

This place came highly recommended. The beef fillet (Medaglioni di filetto) was very good and came a few sauces. The dish with three meats (la Sevaggina): wilderbeest, kudo and springbok was OK but the meats all looked the same and we weren't told which was which so had to ask. These meats also didn't have much taste. When it came to paying, I didn't want to leave as much as 10% tip but then the waiter insisted that the service charge was 10%. This is clearly not correct because mandatory service charge is only for tables of 6 or more, and we were only 2. But I wasn't in the mood for an argument. I just felt a bit cheated.

It's a great place! Perfect steaks. Frankly, I was here a few times but ordered only steaks. So I can't say about other food. But steaks and desserts are great. And the wine cart is really good here too.
Bernadine Besteiro
What an amazing dining experience. If you haven't already been, you absolutely need to book and have your taste buds tantalized. We were even treated to a taster made especially by the owner. The staff are exceptional. Their wine selection is phenomenal, so definitely have a bottle to suit your course.

We happened on this place by chance, as our first preference of restaurant was fully booked. Carne was also fully booked, but managed to fit us in with no fuss. Boy am I glad they did, as the whole experience was great! Kevin, our waiter was fantastic. He explained the menu to us, offered recommendations and was efficient at ensuring we had everything we needed - all with a smile!! I’d highly recommend Carne if you looking for a comfortable and modern restaurant for a hearty meal.

My first time at Carne ... and it does so much right: a head chef who brings a complimentary unexpected starter to your table, two attentive waiters, tender steak, delicious sides. About the only thing puzzling for me is the menu is quite small, but if all you want is a great night out and quality meat, you can't go wrong here.

A meet lover's mecca of epic proportions! I'm always a fan of Chef Giorgio Nava's food: quality ingredients prepared honestly and served with excellent wine! Try the lamb ravioli (it'll blow your mind) and spider steak!

Did someone say dry aged steak and the best chicken dish ever? Pair this with some vintage wine, salad and perfectly prepared vegetables and you have a dinner to die for.

Enjoyed the good quality of meat. Can really recommend the steak tartare. Do not give 5 stars as the experience was not super great (e.g. friendliness of waiters)
Frances Claire Price Moor
Definitely a top restaurant to be visit by everyone who visits Cape Town, exceptional food, great service and an awesome vibe.
Maurizio Colliva
Had an eccellent meat experience. Will remember this most enjoyable evening for a long time. Excellent selection of meat cuts, professionably presented (Nikita, not just a pretty face) grilled to perfection. Next visit to The Mother City......definitely a Must! Arrivederci!

Had my birthday dinner here with friends and wow what an awesome place. The vibe was amazing and the food was so worth it.

Wonderful service , a delightful staff and fabulous dishes !!

Amazing wine, very good food and friendly staff. Can't wait to go back
Neels Van Rooyen
Excellent food, pasta and meat, and service. The "carne" dishes are a tad expensive.

It is the WORST steak house I have ever been and I have been to many, McDonalds will be obviously way better choice then this and here is why:<br/><br/>1/ Service. Not existed. <br/>Waiters hardly speak English. No bread, no forks after food arrived, forgot our water, no salt or pepper (reminded 5 times), after food arrived NO FORKS! after food was finished - they brought us sauces!!! At the end of the meal waiter asked us why we did not left him tip !!!<br/><br/>2/ No game meat and we came for it. Half of the things advertised on the menu not existed. <br/><br/>3/ Food - below average. if not worse. Meat arrived cold and I am not the first writing this complaint here about it. You can definitely can get a better steak at a street market. <br/><br/>4/ Spent about 120 USD on a meal for 2 people and I feel totally crooked, this restaurant deserves to be bankrupt and closed.<br/><br/>5/ If it was in the US, management would be paying for your dinner for such f. up. <br/><br/>I definitely will take it further on all the services possible to put this 'nice' place out of business. <br/><br/>Would put zero star, can't, putting 1 - too much for this sham.<br/><br/>Avoid if you can, Cape Town has many great restaurants and some worst ones, Carne Kloof is the WORST YOU CAN GET!

I expected more. Think it is over rated.

I was absolutely bitterly disappointed after having eaten there a few times. things have changed Marco the manager is not a peoples person. I was charged R112 per dompedro even though it was a double kahlua it's ridiculous. I complained and it was changed. The quality of food and service is below par for the pricing. at the end of the meal my card was swiped though 3 times as the machine couldn't get signal...the manager was rude and made me embarrassed infront of my guest. He suggested he arrange a taxi and take us to an atm after 11pm. I thought this was unacceptable. He should have offered an eft transfer. He didn't and said we couldn't leave unless the bill was paid. That was ridiculous and they only had one card machine. He should have taken our number and card imprint and allowed us to do an eft in the morning. Instead the entire experience was ruined. I will never go back again. I am a director at a 5 star international hotel and I cannot recommend the food or service here. Rather go to the town Carne...its excellent.<br/>

"Carne SA is synonymous with quality meat, Milanese flair and unbridled passion"<br/><br/>Carne likes to let steak do the talking, from the moment the waiters parade a platter of quality meat before your table. Which unfortunately was not the case last night because we decided at exactly 9:30pm that we wanted to go to Carne Kloof for dinner , mind you their kitchen closes at 22:00. My friend called and made a reservation for a table and highlighted the closing time. But where there is a determined meat lover , there is a way. I called again at exactly 9:43 pm and asked them to please prepare my meal and that I was on my way.<br/><br/> Alongside prime beef, lamb and venison, you will get to see hanger steak, spider steak, prime rib on the bone. One of the signature dishes is the 1.2 kg La Fiorentina T-bone, a fine choice for a hungry nation which is what we opted for as there was three of us and all very hungry. This to be followed by their decadent chocolate fondant which I always argue that it needs to come standard with the ice cream! (story for another day this ice cream one) hence they don't get a full 5. The fondant needs to come standard with the ice cream!<br/><br/>The food was ,as always amazing and the glass of Optima went perfectly well with the meat. As sides we had  the mashed potato and spinach. Now the mash potato at Carne is another story I want to explore another day! Never in the history of potatoes has mash tasted that good!<br/><br/>Even though it was late and you could see they were preparing to close , we were not rushed . One did not get a sense of "you need to leave"<br/><br/>Great food. Great service .. Great great Great!<br/><br/>Carne Kloof is slowly but surely starting to replace Carne on Keerom as my fave Carne!<br/><br/>

I had the steak of my life at Carne (Keerom) so arrived with astronomical expectations. Carne on Kloof isn’t quite the same and I would recommend the original for the “cellar” setting. However, there is nothing wrong with finding yourself at Carne on Kloof. They seem aware of their “little brother” status, and deliver the same excellent standard of service and our (brilliant) waitress was at pains to point out that they could replicate and perhaps exceed the quality of the original. They came very close. I’d heartily recommend their Lamb Ravioli, Caprese starter and any steaks (they cook Medium Rare perfectly!). In a city with a number of excellent restaurants, Carne is a brilliant choice.

I was taken out here for dinner as part of a recruiting exercise. While I would say the venue on Kloof isn’t as nice as Keerom, the food and service is comparable. I enjoyed the veg options and did not feel like they were secondary, less cared-for food items. I enjoyed the Napoletana pasta sauce. Others on my table said that the butternut ravioli was the best they’ve ever tasted. Personally I wouldn’t give the ravioli that honor, but I will say that was good!

Was highly disappointed with the service especially from the manager who felt it was ok to argue with me (the customer). I specifically ordered my steak medium rare and it came medium well. When asking him what he thought it looked like he decided it was better to argue and make it out as if I was wrong. Not ok. Quality of the steak was average. Service terrible. Won't be recommending this steak house any time soon. Very disappointed

I am such a fan of the original Carne and such perfection is hard to repeat. <br/><br/>We recently had lunch at Carne on Kloof and we didn't check the menu beforehand and were disappointed to find that our favourite cut of steak was not on the menu. <br/><br/>For starters we opted for the beef carpaccio and the bone marrow, both of which was tasty. (My favourite is always the bone marrow though)<br/><br/>We then shared the pork dish which turned out to be massive but well prepared along with some spinach and mash.<br/><br/>The service was good and we had an attentive waiter.

When you like meat, but want to be a little bit more adventurous than your stock standard steakhouse- this is where you go! The raw meat cuts are presented to you on a platter from the waiter and explained in detail (usually difficult to hear above all the background noise). Prices are on the high side, but it is worth it. Had to get the bone-marrow as a starter, because you rarely see it on menus. Shared it with hubby, just to get the tastebuds going. I had the Picanha rump, which wasn't even on the menu! It was beautifully presented, and tasted like it was handled with respect. The meat is so tender and the seasoning brings out the natural flavour. Husband had the rump- which was big, bold and juicy! Must save space for dessert. We shared the infamous chocolate fondant. I say it's the best in Cape Town (95 Keeroom original). Foodgasm stuff!

Watch out for the R500 plus rib steak rip-off!<br/><br/>Food was not bad, just average. Then came the bill! I was charged R536 for an average sized average tasting rib-steak (off-menu so I was totally unaware I was buying the most expensive steak I'd ever eaten, whether in Europe, the US, Canada or South Africa). To add injury to insult I was charged R35 for utterly tasteless spinach (the free chips were not bad). <br/><br/>When I tried to talk to the manager about it -- very politely -- he refused to give me his name, and suggested we meet for coffee the next morning so he could give it to me then, which I took as a threat.<br/><br/>He said I'd been shown a selection of steaks in advance which had a stickers attached giving the weight and price, and I said it was illegible under crinkly plastic covering, and that I'd thought it gave the weight only, which the waitress provided only when specifically asked because I couldn't read the label. She did not offer the price. <br/><br/>She was present at our conversation and can verify what was said. She blamed herself for the situation, but it is clear that the management knows full well that this is a clever and profitable rip-off. Two guys next to our table heard the conversation and interjected that they'd both had rib steaks, were both charged over R500 each, and were astonished that the price was more than three times the average price on the menu for other similar-sized steaks.<br/><br/>The manager told me (several times and quite proudly) that the R536 price was calculated on the basis of R1,000 per kilo. For ordinary rib steak.<br/><br/>Sucker par excellence (me)

The Florentine Steak is out of this world, and I have never in my life had broccoli that delicious. Amazing service (big thank you to our waiter, Elial, who made the evening even better), gorgeously quaint setting and food that renews your faith in pretty much everything. Love this place. LOVE IT.

Had a lovely dinner at Carne, which is the sister restaurant of 95 Keerom, so was expecting great things and they didn't disappoint. <br/><br/>The restaurant is small and cosy with an inviting atmosphere. To start I had the butternut ravioli which was delicious. Others at the table had the avocado salad which looked amazing too. <br/><br/>For mains our table ordered a range of different cuts of steak and we shared these. Before ordering, the waiters have a plate with the different cuts available for the night and show you the different pieces, explaining the flavour of each one. The steak did not disappoint and was amazing. The sides were very good too with the broccoli being a surprising standout. <br/><br/>For desert my friend and I shared the chocolate fondant which was gooey and tasty in all the right ways. <br/><br/>Overall a wonderful experience with delicious food and friendly service.

What an experience for the books - right from the beginning to the end, every plate tasted delicious! Starters for the table consisted of the carpaccio, the avo salad and the ravioli. While I've had better carpaccio, the salad and ravioli are a must- I could easily order multiple portions to have for mains!<br/><br/>Before ordering mains, the waiter provides an explanation of the different cuts, which offers a point of difference. Around the table, the spider steak, pork and rump was ordered - all equally delicious! All finished off with fondant and tiramisu. Divine!!

What an intimate meat experience! From the get-go, you feel welcomed into their establishment. You are introduced to a board with various cuts of meat, where you then have an opportunity to order which ever you desire. To Start, we had the Karoo lamb ravioli, which was extremely tasty. For mains, we had a hanger steak as well as a spider steak, one with mashed potatoes, the other with fries. Both were cooked to absolute medium perfection. They even boast a few vegetarian options for those who aren't keen on meat. For a mid week dinner, the restaurants atmosphere was bustling. Based on the knowledge of the staff, the perfectly cooked steak and the bustling atmosphere, I would definitely be returning in the near future.

Dear Carne, <br/><br/>Never have I ever felt so intimate with my meat. Meeting my meat. Saying hello. While not so long after having it ready to eat. Tres cool. <br/><br/>Sean

I had heard a lot about Carne before visiting last Tuesday night. Some of my friends claim it to be the best steakhouse in Cape Town. And perhaps Carne on Keerom is...but I was left underwhelmed by Carne on Kloof. Maybe its my simple palate but I like fillets (rare / medium rare) and to my dismay found no fillets on their menu. I am not sure how any top steakhouse could not stock fillet. I settled for the sirloin, which was average and overpriced.<br/><br/>Furthermore, I am not sure the location or the cafe/bistro-lite look and feel with cramped tables works for a top notch steakhouse.<br/><br/>Franchising carries the risk of brand dilution and sadly I suspect that, in this instance, the risk is being realised.

Meat at carne is always top class. I would be worried if it wasnt. This is a bite size of the original menu but all the favourites are on there. Staff are friendy quick and efficient! Wine list is from grape heaven!

I take all my foreign guests here and local friends. The service is consistent and very good. The food is great and we are always assisted in getting a table even when they are full they will always offer you an alternative such as coming earlier or later etc keep up the good work guys!

Leverne Viljoen Botha <br/>10/10<br/>Best eating experience in a long time. <br/>Spider steak, Hanger steak, best wine and Tiramisu. <br/>Love Carne on Kloof.
Jonathan
As expected from the carne franchise, the meat is great and grilled to perfection. Very similar to original set up but with a simpler menu and more casual vibe.

Last night some friends and I decided to try out Carne for dinner. We had heard a lot about it and although it being a bit pricy we enjoyed our evening. The food was delicious and the service very good! Their staff really are very informed when it comes to their meat selection, and were able to help me choose which cut to go for. I eventually chose the spider steak, and paired it with the mushroom and brandy sauce. It was definitely the right choice and I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. I think the only downfall was that with it being so expensive, I felt I had to limit myself to just a main course.
Mathew West-Russell
Carne is thee place to go for any meat lovers. I had the most amazing steak called the spider steak which was absolutely perfect. The portions were extremely large and considering the size pretty decent bang for your buck. The waiters were great and very knowledgable about the various meats.
Quen Novy
Great place. A carnivore paradise for sure. I really like the fact that you can see like in a butchery the piece of meat you want to eat before it is cooked. Vegetarian most avoid!

What a great establishment. No frills and fuss and beyond amazing meat that is brought through on a platter and shown and explained re maturity, cut and textures. I shared A bone marrow starter with my friend (purely due to size), the carpaccio was delish and so was the steak tartare that came in 3 balls with different sauces! My order of liver was so tender and tasty, as was the test of the main orders of spider steak, prime rib and sirloin. Everyone just about cleaned their plates. The meal was a bit pricey but if comparing it to quality you cant complain! Lovely meal with a great Springfield red! Thank you...we'll be back!! The staff were great, super friendly and extremely knowledgeable!

Really great steak. Perfectly cooked. Juicy. Tasty char grill. Excellent wine list. Wine is a bit pricey, but if you're willing to spend a bit of cash it's an excellent treat. The lamb ravioli is also really good!

Honestly could not be more impressed by this place. We didn't book ahead and they made a plan for a table for 2 of us. The waiter - Blessing - was truly fantastic. The selection of breads and olives that was brought to the table was generous and delicious. <br/><br/>We did sharesies so as to avoid food envy - the Karoo Lamb ravioli is unbelievable, and the steaks on par with other top steakhouses in Cape Town (we had a sirloin cooked perfectly with bearnaise sauce). Bringing the raw meat to the table and explaining it first is a nice touch, too. They have an expansive wine list that made choosing the correct wine for the meal easy. <br/><br/>The real winner of the night was the tiramisu - never have I had such good tiramisu before. If I ever have a late night sweet craving I will be going straight to Carne. <br/><br/>(Once again got too carried away with eating and forgot to take photos)<br/>
Jenna Manthé
Nothing quite beats a perfectly cooked steak, and Carne couldn't be more perfect even if they tried! I adore this restaurant and its vibe! <br/><br/>For those red meat eaters, this spot is definitely for you and I couldn't recommend it more in winter. The restaurant with its wooden finishes, facebrick walls and bar completely stocked with some of the best red wine, creates the warm feel that everyone needs on a chilly evening. <br/><br/>I cannot fault the steak (or meal) one bit. The waiter comes to your table with a display of the meats they have on offer - some may not like it, but I appreciated seeing just how fresh the meat is. We got the spider steak and tomahawk. The tomahawk is huge, something I feel The Flintstones would munch on. They were INCREDIBLE! Yes, they are pricey but in my mind SO worth it. <br/><br/>The service is professional and attentive, and I felt they genuinely wanted us to have the best experience.
Shante H Hutton
Carne might not be the first stop on a vegetarian's mind but even with the mass of meat, it didn't disappoint for my needs.<br/>Fresh, flavorful salads brimming with nuts, cheese, vegetables and Parmesan. <br/>The most perfect butternut ravioli in Cape Town (I'm not lying, you can't beat it).<br/>And for the first time in Carne history, divine salmon which melted in the mouth - I was seriously spoilt.<br/>Great wine list (you can't bring your own though) and really lovely staff.
Cindy Alfino
A couple of colleagues at Seths work mentioned that if you like steak (as we do), then we absolutely had to pop in to Carne.<br/><br/>We were treated so well from the moment we set foot in the door, to the second we left. Even though we didn't make a reservation they managed to squeeze us in.<br/><br/>Looking at the menu we saw a lot of terms for the meat that we were unfamiliar with but not to worry, our waitress explained it all to us.<br/><br/>Seth had the spider steak and I settled with the 300g sirloin as they don't serve my usual fav (fillet). We had a couple of different sauces and Seth had the mash and I had the garden salad.<br/><br/>The wine list is extensive but rather on the expensive side. We're used to splurging on r200 a bottle so I nearly choked on the R300 price tags that most had. <br/><br/>The chocolate fondant that we shared for dessert was delicious but you had to pay extra for the dollop of ice cream.<br/><br/>All in all a nice treat, but definitely on the pricey side of things.
Daniel Buys
My girlfriend and I shared the slow roasted lamb shoulder ravioli to start. The pasta was beautifully thin and silky and the filling tasty. We then shared the massive 1,2kg T-bone which they slice off the bone but still serve it on the side (I like to chew on the bone so don't take it away!). The meat was divine and drizzled with lashings of beautiful olive oil. Not cheap but worth the spend if you can. I will be back! Oh, and the service warm and friendly!

A brilliant option for excellent meat and a great alternative to the larger and original Carne! The bistro is relaxed and intimate with a small and focused menu. I highly recommend the beef spider and beef hanger steaks! Giorgio Nava has done it once again! Carne on Kloof is one of my favourite spots for a relaxed lunch or dinner when I am in Cape Town and in the mood for some good steak.
David Graham
One of my favourite spots of the moment. A relaxed version of the Carne on Keroom, getting a table here at the moment can be tricky. The maitre d' is wonderful - she always makes the effort to set us. Staff are knowledgable, attentive and the service is spot. Atmosphere is very intimate, some maybe nit great for a posh dinner meeting, but that is what makes it a great neighbourhood joint. Sadly, I don't live in the neighbourhood. The food is wow - I can highly recommend the sweetbreads and any of the speciality steaks on offer - Tomahawk, Hanger or FlatIron.
James Hickman
This is a great variation on the original! Actually, I prefer it!!<br/><br/>It is less noisy and more inmate, the food is the same exceptional standard and the service is great.<br/><br/>This is the perfect first date place (assuming you date likes meat) or a great business dinner place, it somehow ticks both boxes where so many places only carter for one.<br/><br/>If I had a choice I would always chose Kloof over the original.
Jean Verwey
Okay - here's the deal. Do not come to Carne if you are a vegetarian. Do not come if you are afraid of the biggest and best piece of steak that you will have ever had. Carne takes what you thought was a good steak - throws it in the gutter and spits on it. This place is serious about steak and it has forever changed my definition of quality meat, grilled to perfection, with great service and a friendly atmosphere.
