Review Dias Tavern - Cape Town Central

Evangelia
Proper authentic Portuguese experience. The team are so lovely that you won’t want to leave. The food is absolutely incredible. Full of flavour and reasonably priced. Cannot wait to come back!! 🙌

Dias always has such incredible food, staff, and an amazing atmosphere. The restaurant was quite quiet when I went last night, but the atmosphere was still so warm, comforting, and inviting. Dias Tavern never disappoints! Their Trinchado is always absolutely incredibly delicious.

Very nice food and great atmosphere. I went there for dinner on a busy Friday evening. The place was packed but our waitress still managed to get my party of six a table. We ordered pretty much everything on the menu 🤣 (see picture) and I gotta say, everything tasted great. There was not one thing we didn't like and the portions were fair. Stand outs for me were their juicy prawns and crispy calamari. Their chicken was nice too but some pieces were tough, just like their steak cubes. There was live performance that night and the whole place had a great vibe. After a while, they moved some tables away to open up the front of the restaurant into a dance floor.
Alet Loubser
a Very relaxed good vibe atmosphere! The service was par excellent and the food was extremely tasty and well presented. This is the ideal restaurant to celebrate a birthday with friends and or just enjoying a night out with your friends.
Alzette Gildenhuys
It was a nice experience, the Cheesecake was a bit disappointing though since I could definitely taste it was defrosted but the food made up for it all. Steak was delicious and would recommend the tentacles for a starter. It was quiet the afternoon but this place can get extremely busy and reservations are recommended for popular times.

Never seen this place before, friend told me about it. Had some steak and it was amazing. Atmosphere is great too, will be going back in the near future
Aaron Radomsky
Always a fabulous evening, great food, good live band for atmosphere and authentic in everyway. Service was extremely poor as though understaffed, but once orders were taken, the food came out hot and delicous. Seemed a new way to serve very small sardines but was excellent, and the peri peri chick was as close to perfect , juicy , spicy ,crispy char grill- delicous.

Amazing considering the last time I had been back was 20 odd years ago. Fantastic in every detail. Brilliant menu and side specials. The wine is very well priced. The food as good if not better than I remember it and the toilets... yes the toilets were like your own at home. Clean and well maintained. Service fantastic. Well done Dias you guys were packed and never dropped the customer needs.

A definite local gem in the heart of the city! So much old-world charm is packed into the restaurant that unfolds as the evening progresses. Unexpectedly, our evening with friends and family at Dias turned out as one of our favourite nights out while in Cape Town. The food, the vibe, the setting and the location make it a must visit when you're in town. Tip: Make a booking as it does get busy.

Went there with several people , great experience, great live music, and service was good. Food was great, just the rice needed something, and the streak was overdone and chewy. But the prawns, calarami, fish and chicken were great tasting. Definitely worth it . Atmosphere was the highlight of the night with everyone joining in and dancing near the live band
Willem Stiglingh
Great laid back easy portuguese charm, personal efficient service with food done as ordered fast and still sizzling on the plate. Best portuguese steak eggs and delicious chips!!! I will not drive past Dias tavern ever when I come to Capetown💪🏻😎

Dias never manages to disappoint us. Always the best food, greatest vibe and outstanding staff. Thank you
Jenny Lang
I have not been to Dias in about 15 years. Their food does not disappoint 12/10 awsome best Espetado's I've had in years..
Carmen Addinall
Great music and the best fish dish ever!
Dee Manchett
The best peri peri baby chicken and great chips and the live music great!

This place is a Cape Town institution. Great staff, good food and a unique atmosphere. You must book and try it when there is some sport on TV. You won't be disappointed.
Chris Rafael
Best fish ever ! I have eaten here several times and I’ve never been disappointed. High quality ingredients and careful preparation means you are always served a tasty high quality dish. Highly recommended. I’m a big fan of no frills no fuss dining when the food is this good.
Lucille Byrnes
I have never been let down by the standard of service and the quality of food dished up at Dias Tavern. We’d been to see David Kramer’s Langarm at The Fugard – do yourselves a favour - and were ready to nosh on good food and drink (sparingly cos we wuz driving) appreciatively over reviews of the show and catch-up with friends.

Doesn’t matter what you order, everything’s well prepared, is served quickly – thank you, Charles – and delivers on what’s advertised. My half a chicken was a huge portion that saw the inside of a doogie bag to come home for lunch today.

An all-time favourite haunt of mine.
Love2eat
We had an amazing lunch - most delicious tiger prawns, excellent veggies, peri peri chicken - all just perfectly cooked, excellent quality and fantastic service! Always consistent experience and highly recommend Diaz Tavern
Kev0's Food Adventures!
Don’t be mislead by the casual plastic chairs and tables, the food at Dias Tavern is amazing, nothing beats a great Portuguese Steak, Egg and Chips. The food is fresh tasty and piping hot.
Jlestersa
Just love the simplicity and unpretentious nature of this establishment. Superb chicken and great vibe. Thank you and well done. Ordered their chicken and enjoyed with a bottle of Casal Garcia wine. Lovely.
Tamlyn Potgieter
The best, most authentic Portuguese food in Cape Town. I love the down to earth vibe, friendly staff and amazing food. Some of our favorites are the peri peri chicken, chicken livers, giblets and the prego steak roll. The katembas were a lot of fun.
Dominic De Oliveira
Authentic Portuguese “hole in the wall”, it’s a piece of portugal in the center of Cape Town. Food is delicious and portion size just right. The meals the day is always exciting and you get way more than what you pay for.
Ravi Govender
Wonderful vibe, feisty and friendly service and food that is authentically Portuguese in a way that Nandi’s or Adega will never be able to get quite right. Calamari, Chicken Livers and Squid tentacles made for a great start before the Peri Peri (not so) Baby Chicken arrived. Paired with chilled Vino Verde, I swear that at that time and place, this was the best food in the world!
Jodie Hermans
After being invited here by my boyfriend's parents who are Portuguese, I was really excited. Everything lived up to my expectations, it's rustic and literally gives a feeling of being in a Portuguese pub. I had a Portuguese prego steak and it was so flavorful and moist and the live music by Ernesto was amazing! I'm planning to go back for my boyfriend's birthday in January, he just doesn't know it yet!

Always A Pleasure To Perform And Entertain Dias Tavern Patrons!
Awesome Food And Service!
Join Us On Saturday Evenings For Some Dance Music!
GoodLifeZA Band

We were not impressed with the food. The ribs, steak and chicken were all dry and chewy, too many cooks spoil the broth or should I say too many people spoil the food. 👎🏼
Charnè Meyer
Great selection of Portuguese food. Trinchado sauce is home made and the steaks are served to perfection. Try the calamari tubes (soft and tender) and tentacles (very juicy) for a starter or the Peri Peri Chicken Livers (not too hot). Looking forward to my next visit. Service is very good and friendly...most of the staff has been working there for years. Good vibe for an informal business lunch.

Forgive me father for what I am about to do.... i was told to try Dias tavern (After being very loyal to Vasco up the road).....

Firstly the service was outstanding the lady really took time to always see if we were okay regardless of how busy her section is/was

I ordered the peri peri chicken and chicken livers, I can say the chicken wasn't to my Liking it lacked flavor and had oil at the bottom of the plate, the livers however were outstanding so overall place was okay, would i go back..... well not really I'll stick to Vasca down the road, sure the tavern has it's followers but I won't be one of them

Being an institution it probably upsets a few folks that are regulars there but I suppose each to there own
Nien
Amazing food and service. We didn't have a booking but they still made a spot available to us. The waiters are all friendly and helpful and the food is top!! Thanks for making our Saturday night special.

Trinchi Trinchada
So, I have a thing for Portuguese food (as well as men) but that's a review for another day!

Dias is one of the oldest Portuguese restaurants around and is still typically decorated and operated by the Portuguese familia which adds to their authenticity!

The service and ambiance is always great and welcoming, and the food, wow! The food is exquisite.

On this day, I chose the trinchado, which they traditionally make with red wine and it was absolutely tender and delicious! Maria is a great waitress and host and is already part of the furniture and in turn, gives you that family welcome every time you step through the doors!

The Sangria, lets see, how can you fault Sangria? delicious and spicy, just the way I love it!

Overall, a great experience. Good value for money and the atmosphere is electrifying. Definitely a favorite.
Nicola Cape Town
Possibly the best chicken trinchado I've had to date! Casual setting, friendly servers, and reasonably priced. Thumbs up from me👍🏼 just wish they were on order in or Uber eats!

Dias Tavern , Cape Town !!!

A very busy joyful atmosphere at this restaurant with a cosy feeling.

We had ordered a bowl of salad which was a good portion for starters.

Dinner, A hake and chips and the fish was soft and fresh.

A veggie platter which had a variety of veggies that came with.

A prawn and chicken platter with rice and rolls, and calamari as well.

Service was a bit slow due to the restaurant being busy but the waiter was friendly amd helpful. The food was definitely good. 👍🏽
Trevor
Dias Tavern never disappoints.
Consistently delivers excellent fare at very reasonable prices.
Just love the decor - typically Portuguese and so suited to the venue.
To start we had calamari tubes, chicken livers and squid tentacles ( deep fried )
For mains we ordered Espetada, grilled prawns and Portuguese rump fried in wine and garlic spicy sauce with a fried egg on a very hot skillet. Marvelous
Washed down by a few draughts.
Wonderful relaxing evening
Service was sharp and on the ball.
Sean Boertjie Pelser
Wow what great food! Awesome vibe and great evening. Don't know where to start with the food but we had trinchado, chicken livers, prego steak, peri peri chicken & calamari. We literally had a feast and it was just wow! Definately will become a regular restaurant to visit
Claire Gibson
Great spot for lunch in the CBD. Popped over while in Cape Town with the family. We all had the half chicken peri peri with chips. The chicken was something to write home about - super soft, cooked perfectly, crispy on the outside but moist inside and the peri peri sauce was hot but still so flavorsome. Would love to go back again. My dad used to go eat at Dias Tavern when he travelled to Cape Town often and said the chicken was cooked exactly the same way as he used to have it. We then found out it was the same chef for the last 20 years. They definitely have a winning recipe and if ever in the area give go have some chicken.
Catharina
Nothing pretentious, just tasty Portuguese food and a chilled atmosphere. We had the half chicken and chips as well as a couple of prawns for a starter. It was good but, to be honest, I prefer Toni's on Kloof when it comes to Portuguese. Saying that, Dias is a great spot for a chilled dinner before watching a show at the Fugard theatre.
Barbara Ann Hall
What a surprise this was! Perfect place to pop into for a drink or dinner before a show at the Fugard Theatre. Go early to avoid the traffic and find parking. The decor is horrendously tacky with ghastly plastic chairs and tablecloths 🙄 but what awesome food! The menu is vast, service quick and you'll probably do it next time there's a show on!
Zeepix
Diaz tavern is an institution in Cape Town. Hearty Portuguese fare is the order of the day and you will find authentic favorites on the menu such as chicken livers, sardines, calamari, trinchada, prego rolls and espitadas. Come hungry as the portions are large. My baby chicken was full of flavor, my partners rump cooked to perfection and service was efficient. Great value for money.
Vuyo Renene
I came here to grab a quick bite in between a shoot, and I was quite disappointed. I had a simple beef burger, and the burger patty was not cooked properly. The bun was really dry and my friend found something green/brown which we couldn't identify inside of the patty. Doubt I'll be coming back here. I was really unimpressed.
Godfrey De Meyer
Good old fashioned Portuguese and Mediterranean grub the old fashioned way. Ideal if you have the munchies after a show at the Fugard theatre down the road or pop in after work or lunch. There's a reason why they've been around for ages.
Peter Gouws
The only comment I can add is if you are looking for an enjoyable evening and are happy with oh so food, want live music, Saturday nights at any rate, lots of people, then Diaz Tavern is for you.

Food okay, service good and prices okay.
Wez_Undercover
Everyone has been going on about this place but it's not really my cup of tea. Food was ok but I wouldn't say great value for money. Staff was friendly and Portuguese beer is pretty rad.
Collin Allin
Proper Portuguese cafe vibe. Oregon steak roll is famous on Cape Town and will never disappoint so if that is what you are in the mood for then definitely go eat it here, service is friendly and well priced so good value for money.
Ulisha Moodley
Tried out dia's tavern once and found the food to be okay. It's a very informal restaurant which could be guessed from the name. We tried out the chicken and calamari. Definitely preferred the calamari over the chicken. The service is a little slow but friendly.
Jesse-Mari
Everyone raves about their peri-peri chicken and I must say it's definitely worth the hype, if you like your food extra hot! The decor is minimalistic but the food and vibe definitely makes up for that. Our waiter was friendly and attentive. The food was served under less than 20 minutes on a busy Tuesday night. I'd definitely go again to try some of their fish dishes.
Ashna Dayal
Dias Tavern is a wonderful Portuguese restaurant in town! The simplistic setup and atmosphere of the restaurant attracts many locals and foreigners. Despite being extremely busy for a Tuesday night, the service was still good and everyone was so friendly. We ordered a peri peri chicken and my dad asked them to make it hot as he likes spicy food. I ordered grilled calamari and my mom ordered the veg platter. The food came hot and fresh and exceeded our expectations. I thoroughly enjoyed the calamari unfortunately I battled to eat the chicken as it was too spicy for me. However my dad found it delicious. My mom also enjoyed her veg platter which had a baked potatoes, chips, butternut, cream spinach and broccoli. Overall lovely experience at Dias Tavern!

In Cape Town (My favourite city) for the long weekend. We were starving and my cousin suggested portuguese pub style food which was exactly what we were in the mood for. We looked at the menu online and were sold. The place was extremely busy. We ordered quickly and being so busy we expected to wait a while before we got our food. But that we not the case. Food arrived quickly and was piping hot and looked delicious. I ordered the Portuguese chicken prego roll. It was not what I expected. Fillet of chicken with and egg on top with a delicious sauce. Chicken was so soft, egg was cooked perfectly and the chips were to die for. We enjoyed watching the football and to top it all off we saw Idris Elba there watching the football. Will definitely go back to Dias.

Down in CT for the long weekend. After a long flight yesterday, then checking in to the BnB we were pretty hungry for some good food, nothing fancy. The suggestion was Dias, a small Portuguese restaurant/pub in the CBD. It has an extremely old school vibe to it, with basic decor. I ordered the Peri Peri baby chicken with chips. The food didn't take long at all and was at our table pretty quickly. The baby chicken didn't look that small but was maybe a full chicken, bonus! The flavour of the chicken was fantastic, it was juicy, full of flavour throughout and the Peri Peri was perfect. I would rank this up there with some of the best Portuguese chicken I've eaten.
Deelan
After hearing some mixed reviews about this place I was slightly hesitant to visit, but after a closer look at the menu I was sold. Not the fanciest venue but it's cosy and provides an enjoyable atmosphere. I ordered the Portuguese Chicken Prego and could not really find any fault in it. It wasn't exactly what I expected in that the chicken didn't come in a roll but I ordered one to go with once my food arrived. The chicken was extremely tender and the sauce was delicious! I also tasted some of my friends baby chicken (very large baby chicken) which was just as tasty! Service was adequate and, as a huge plus I got to meet Idris Elba (the actor) who was also visiting the Tavern😁. Will definitely be back!

Feeling tired after a busy day in the office? Want to sit back and relax with a tall drink, tasty meal, and good service? Come to Dias. My girlfriend and I are regulars here, and the peri-peri baby chicken is our go-to meal. We order it extra char-grilled, with chips. Each and every time, this meal is more satisfying than a Cristiano Ronaldo youtube highlights reel.
Dorea
Great Great food. Worth waiting for it so long. Best Kingklip and calamari I've eaten in a very long time. Lovely vibes. Loved it!!...........
Andre Breytenbach
Ok I have been here too many times too remember! I have never left disappointed as they are very well priced and the food is always good. On Saturday though I must say I was disappointed with the chicken. I especially asked for well done - the platter arrived and the chicken were scorched on the one side and no grill markings on the other? It looked like they forgot the chicken on the grill just on the one side??!! The ribs were fall of the bone and the prawns 10/10!!!I will be back - the best Portuguese pub/restaurant still remains Vasco da Gama though - read my review it is published down below somewhere!
Cptboytjie
Never ever disappointed when going here. Food is reasonably priced and reasonably sized portions. I suggest the chicken giblet starter and the espitada. Drinks is also reasonably priced so I would suggest uber

Dias Tavern never fails to impress as an all-round dining offering in terms of food, service and ambience. Their prices are fair and the meals are very good. They certainly have a very well-oiled machine running with their operation. We have been there several times (particularly before and after shows at the theatre), and we are always comfortable that our meal will come out in time and be scrumptious. The rustic décor and lovely attitude of the Dias team always make it such a pleasure to go back. One of our favourite spots in Cape Town.
Food Ninja
We found the Prego a bit too salty. Queen Prawns were good. Baby Kingklip was the winning dish this evening - perfectly grilled but the calamari and chips were a bit on the oily side. Regular taverna dining - not for a romantic night out. This is more for big family dining out or for a quick meal before you go to a show at the Fugard Theatre. Prices are average and we received good service. Dias gets very busy so make sure you book a table.
Shez
Dias is a real fun, loud, viby place. We had a large table and we all had ordered various different dishes. The food was delicious. The service was great and the food came pretty quickly considering how large our table was and how busy the restaurant was too. However, I do think the place is a little too loud (music wise) as I struggled to hear what everyone was saying at the table. I think it's a nice vibe to have a bachelors / bachelorette / birthday party.
Sergi Passos
I've been here before and the food never disappoints. This time I had the Portuguese Prego. I know it as the Prego no prato. It was great and stuck to its traditional flavor. It would be great if there were more fans inside as the heat at one point was quite discomforting. Beside that a nice Laurentina beer and some good company will have one having a great time.
Ryan Goodman
Quite simply the best baby Kingklip in Cape Town and at R120 easily the best value around. Always fresh, always perfectly cooked - sauted in a delicious butter sauce. The setting is laid back with long tables and plastic chairs perfect for large gatherings or quick dinner before a show at the fugard. Check-in on a Friday or Saturday evenimg for the resident 2-man band pumping out golden oldies and 80s classics.
Glen Loxton
Good old fashioned Portuguese-style seafood! What can I say? Everything tastes better if you smother it in an oily, garlic-chili-prego sauce! The service was prompt and friendly. Large menu. Nice ambience for dinner with a large group of people or if you want to go watch a big game.
Sharon Malan
Our all time favorite!! With its basic decor thats been the same for as long as I remember it remains a cozy, always busy Portuguese restaurant! Yet to have a bad meal there!! My favorite is either the Beef or Chicken Trinchado! Definitely the best in town. The chicken peri-peri is just as good and so is the steak Espetada's! Awesome place all round!
Jessica Davis
I was at Dias tavern about two weeks ago, their food is incredible! I haven't found a Portuguese restaurant in CT that trumps it. The beef Espatada is my favorite, however their steak egg and chips is also out of this world. Unfortunately no photos to show, but Dias is truly a tucked away gem.
MelbourneLops
Tasty Portuguese food, live music and a chilled atmosphere is what you’ll get at Dias Tavern. I love that you can end your dinner/drinks with a little boogie on the dancefloor. Go with a group of friends and enjoy a night of good food, drinks and vibe.
Marc Stowe
I suppose it's going to be really difficult to give a balanced review seeing as I've been frequenting Dias for the last 18 years. Regularly, as in at least once every 2 weeks. The biggest problem with Dias is that the damn trinchado is so good. Why's that a problem? Well, FOMO stops you ordering anything else. I have on occasion, and thoroughly enjoyed my meals, but I still wanted the trinchado. So the peri baby chicken is world class, and their fish meals are always cooked to perfection and super tasty. Calamari tentacles , right up there.
Food apart, this is not the place to take your respective other half for a night out, more suited to casual meals, party with mates or to pick up sport.
Highly recommended for a lads get together
Allan Moita
Average is the best way to describe Dias tavern. The food, the service, the actual quality of the food and the atmosphere.

I'd say it's more of a drinks venue actually.

Tafel Vir Twee
We went to dinner here on a Monday night and it was a little slow. Despite that, the vibe is really nice and would probably be really fun on the weekend or during a soccer game. It has a warm, cozy vibe. The food, however, was truly outstanding. There are so many unique Portuguese dishes...if you are an adventurous eater, this is the place for you! Overall great experience and we can't wait to go back.
Thuvesh Naidoo
Wow... Really great food. We love Portuguese food and really needed to find something great in cape town. Dias Tavern thicks all my boxes. You need to book if you going here, this place gets ready busy.
Bebz H
I love Dias Tavern. Yummy Portuguese style food. Friendly service. You don't wait long for your meal. My favourite meal is the rump prego on a skillet. Their secret prego sauce is REALLY tasty. For starters I'd recommend the deep friend squid or the chorizo. Their Portuguese rolls are also a must (really soft and fresh) and the roll should be used to mop up that famous Dias sauce!
Danielle Luyt
This is the place to be! What a hidden gem! Nothing can compare to their Trinchado and Espatada.. Portuguese food is the way to go. When in doubt go to Dias Tavern. The food is full of flavour. It is very homely and inviting. You make the Portuguese community proud 👍
Romano Quintal
Absolutely love the food...maybe because im Portuguese but every time i eat there it makes me miss the food in madeira!! Trinchado for the win and lets not forget the baby king clip.
Where-oh-where
If you're looking for somewhere casual with a guaranteed vibe, look no further. The live band in the corner get diners dancing by the end of the night and the long tables bring in big rowdy groups. The foods good too. Surf and turf that's flavorful.
David Graham
Cape Town institution serving hearty food and a wide array of beers. Staff always friendly - can be a little dark inside, but always atmospheric. Some real Cape Town characters make for an interesting lunch vibe...
Chanel Pillay
This place was suggested by someone I know, at first I was hesitant when I heard the word 'tavern'. Luckily I decided to give it a chance anyways. When I walked into the restaurant, there was so much of families enjoying their meal and it was quite busy for a week day. So I immediately knew the food must be good.

To eat I had the baby chicken thats prepared in a Portuguese style, I ordered hot and it was the most satisfying thing to eat especially in winter.

I'll suggest this place for a hearty, well priced meal served in a relaxed environment with a live a band and friendly waiters.
Petrus Bekker
Just had the most amazing lunch @Dias Tavern. Have not been here in a very long time but was well worth it. For starters we each had a garlic roll & Prawn Rissoles to share, followed by Baby Chicken, one Peri-Peri & one Lemon & Herb. Dessert, Pasteis De Nata for Terrance with Kahlua Coffee and I had the Cassata Slice - Vanilla, chocolate and "creme" ice cream with nuts, glazed fruits & Amaretto liqueuer with Kahlua Coffee. Yum Yum Yum!!! Service was good and everything tasted amazing!!!!
Lize
Very rustic restaurant, with plastic chairs - but don't let looks fool you. All part of the experience, incredible vibe - live bands and happy friendly staff. Gets very busy so best to book in advance. Food is absolutely delicious and affordable, proper portugese cuisine
Robin Conan Friester
Awesome food and great vibe - love this place, just keep on going back for the famous Joes Special....its a must have, bit of a creature of habit, but never been disappointed
Robert Peitzsch
Dias Tavern is possibly one of the most chilled restaurants in Cape Town. I've attended a birthday here and had my own birthday and they are always accommodating and understanding. The decor is average, but who cares the vibe and food are awesome, especially Joe's special. Absolutely love this place and everything it has to offer!
Shauna Tweedie
Have always had a fantastic experience here. Nothing fancy but such a fun vibe with live music keeping it going. Delicious food and great service. Best on the menu is the joe's special!
Jeff Fernandes
I have been going to Dias Tavern Since I was a kid , best Portuguese food around . The Vibe is great on Fridays and Saturdays and Trinchado sauce is truly something that is hard to come by . Being a creature of habit the Portuguese Steak is a winner and order it every time I am there . Great variety of starters , mains are fantastic and all at reasonable prices . Definitely a great night out with family or friends !!!
Lissette Chetty
Had a great evening at Dias tavern, awesome traditional food, good entertainment. The place was full, but that just added to the vibe. It's authentic, down to earth, no frills. We'll definitely be back.
Shad Lee
This place doesn't change, its always a good night out. I wouldn't say its the best Portuguese food in cape town but its certainly is good.
The trinchado I can safely say is the best I have ever tasted. Perfectly cooked cubes of rump in a red wine, garlic and secret spiced potion. Gotta mop it up with fresh crispy Portuguese rolls.
Its a great place to watch sport and is probably the most unpretentious restaurant in Cape Town. Make a reservation for weekend nights cause they get very full.
David Thomson
Had trinchado the meat and sauce was very nice but the chips my wife said looked and tasted like it had be taken off leftover plates. The atmosphere was very Pleasanton the place the band was also very good

Brian
Always a great vibe, the usual Trinchada is always required, meals and service generally good don't expect bells and whistles, this time round however the meat could have been matured a bit longer.
Annemie Rabie
Been here twice, awesome food and proper Portuguese food so be prepared to be attempt at eating everything on your plate although the meal portions are big so you'll struggle, nice vibe with live music. Great for birthdays.
Carlétjie Van Eck
Very cramped and way too little space to move around, the band is way too loud - can not hear the person next to you speaking, but the food was good... just sad that the little things spoiled the experience for me TWICE!
Three Pensioners Plus Our Attorney
We had our first lunch for 2018 at the Dias Tavern. I had the Prego Steak Roll and found steak to be tasty but on small side. CH had the Chicken Espatada with chips and a garlic sause which he found to be very tasty and tender. JT, MH and PD all had the Tenchado which all found it to be excellent. This is our third visit to Dias Tavern and were once again very happy with the service
Kieran Pearce
Ok its super important to mention one thing.

This is the best Portuguese in Cape Town, hands down, no questions asked. What makes it so special is their Trinchado sauce.. its supreme.
Most places do a trinchado gravy, and these guys a thin, garlic, wine and chilli loaded sauce which is hot enough to be sensual and keep you wanting more.
The best in Cape town!
Food a side for a second, the atmosphere trumps the rest, its pure tavern goodness. it consists of cheap drinks, Plastic chairs and booths, old school decor, a range of well priced cocktail shooters, brandy and coke specials, jugs of sangria and of course the legendary musicians that come there weekly to play classic old school. its everything you expect when going to a place with the word TAVERN in the name and I love it.

before you know it you sit down and you start feeling the comfort, conversation flows and so do the drinks and then food!

Please stop going anywhere else for Portuguese , this is the only place in town worth going.
Roxanne Ilbury
Absolutely LOVE this place - working in the restaurant industry it is so great to just go out and have a casual meal, get messy and have a good time. They have live bands and singers and it gets very festive. I had prawns and chips with peri peri sauce and it blew me away. A must try!!
Robyn Rainier
My parents remembered this being one of the best Portuguese places around and convinced me to come along for lunch. What a mistake!
Firstly, don't expect anything amazing in decor, it's basically a pub setup with plastic chairs. I could forgive that until the food arrived and all 3 dishes were terrible!! My mother tried the trinchado, which tasted like dirty soap water and both steak sandwiches had no flavour and was raw instead of medium rare! Complaining didn't really do much, all we got was a half hearted apology. Needless to say, probably my worst restaurant experience ever and definitely will never be back!
Lily
Don't expect anything more than good food, great atmosphere and a live band.
I have never eaten anything besides - half a chicken, cut up, mild with salad.
Every week is date night at Dias for us!
Clive Goodheart
What can I say.....my work comanies favourite spot and why not....food always great....no frills, fancy decor or tables....just great food with a good vibe. This restaurant is a landmark and just the fact they have been around for so long under the same owners says a lot. You always feel welcome and the food is always good and consistent...you know what you will be getting everytime. The baby kinglip is to die for.....mind you everything is good!! What more can I say...
JdP
Typical pub/sports bar vibe, def not for romantic dinners. Being Portuguese I can tell you this is one of the best places for Portuguese food in all of Cape Town. Super rich foods, drowning in gravy and starch... the best.

Value for money is quite good - come here hungry, and without heart/cholesterol problems.
Riaan Anker
Been here several times. Nice vibe.. lunch or dinner. Friendly service. Love their Espetada!!

22/12/2015

Been here with my son having espetada .. this place never disappoints me ..
Anita Shapiro
If you are in the mood for a bit of rough, head down to Diaz Tavern, for really good hearty pub grub. They offer a Portuguese menu with great chicken livers peri peri, trinchado, whole baby chicken and good calamari. This is a VERY popular spot, so I recommend you book in advance. Great place to have dinner before going to the Fugard, and also a great spot to go with a group of friends to watch rugby on the big screen.

The understated decor and fantastic vibe at Dias all add to its charm. The food is incredible and I've tried most of it, the espatadas, chicken peri per and fish are memories that stay with you and the trinchado sauce has become the yardstick by which I measure all others..
Highly recommended
