Review Hemelhuijs - Cape Town Central

Danielle Kruger
Wow, wow, wow! You can taste the love in the food! Amazing options, flavours and presentation. The pineapple combo juice was so refreshing too. Excellent service from Philicitine and team, from the moment we stepped in until we left. What a wonderful find, we will be back!

It's a hidden gem... my 1st impression when I walked, was this is fancy as the tables are neatly set up with glasses, knives, fork and beautiful proteas as a center piece. The decor and style gives an impression of a lavish feel, with lavish food prices... which not the case, it is a bit pricier than most places but its worth it. My friends and I just walked in and there were a few reserved seats, thinking we will need to sit outside, which wasn't something we wanted. However, the manager or I think she was be the hostess, just removed the reserved sign to accommodate us. Which was really great. I felt a bit under dressed with sneakers and a cap, as we had just come from a 6km walk. Seeing people dressed up that early, was quiet something but not once did I feel like I didn't belong there, just because of how I was dressed. I was fascinated by the decor and the ceiling flowers. Floatimf shelves and some porcelain piece against the wall. So beautiful... We were served with friendliness and a very attentive waitress... I was super impressed with my food. I don't usually go for artichokes but it was delicious. My poached eggs were perfect but what top it for me was their mosbolletjie toast. I had to order another slice it was so good.. my friends also enjoyed their food, we were even impressed with the design of one of the plates. 1 critic... the restaurant is quite small and there was a moment I felt uncomfortable because I think there were too many waiters for such a small place. When they not attending to the tables, they all gather in the corner, like sardines in a tin, just watching all the patrons. It was funny but it felt weird even though I know they just keeping an eye out for wehe they are needed but it felt like i was stared at.. It is definitely a place I will recommend and also will return for maybe lunch next time

Wonderful lunch spot. The food is amazing. It’s a small restaurant, so it gets really full during lunch hours and the waiting time is too long. But the meals are fresh and light and original. I will definitely go there again.

My Birthday on Monday 16th October 2023 was our last day in beautiful Cape Town and we found this absolute gem of a place to have my Birthday Breakfast. Just wish we had discovered earlier :) Superb food with great staff who were all very welcoming and friendly. Highly recommended - you will not be disappointed!

Quaint establishment with beautiful interiors. Hemelhuijs has some splendid menu options. The starter veg wrap is quite memorable as well as their prawn dumplings. Restrooms are located in another area close to the car park. The experience was dampened with the service staff that get very impatient close to closing time which is 4pm.

Gorgeous little place tucked away in a side street in town. Small and cosy with friendly staff. Perfect for brunch.

This beautiful, quaint Cafe is a perfect gem of an eatery located in the city bowl on Waterkant Street. A true bistro in every sense of the word, Hemelhuijs embodies elegance and tranquility. The café has indoor and outdoor dining; because it's located on a small, quiet street, outdoor dining is a pleasure. Indoors, the decor is a mixture of classic and modern and the atmosphere is buzzy. The food is delicious. They have a simple menu with just enough options, but the flavors and combinations used are delightful. They serve a Vietnamese coffee - with condense milk - which is one of the best coffees I have had in a while. The service is excellent, we had a wonderful server who was very attentive to detail and personable. I will definitely be back!
Marco Capo (Marco)
I tried their version of eggs benedict, deliciously laid on a soft brioche bun. Full of flavour. The interior is simple and cool, makes a very good relaxed and interesting ambience. I look forward to try lunch options too.

A Cape town institution that still has an exceptional standard. We live the bruch menu and cocktails. Decor and service on point. They also have a few South African inspired dishes.

The ambiance was warm and inviting, instantly making me feel at home. As I perused the menu, I couldn't help but notice the attention to detail that went into each dish. Every bite was a burst of flavour. But what truly amazed me about Hemelhvijs was the passion that radiated from every corner of the restaurant. From the friendly staff to the talented chefs, it was clear that everyone involved genuinely loved what they do. This passion translated into the food.

Yummmmsss! This a must when in capetown. Want a delicious & organic food with a homemade style feel ? This is it! Wonderful staff, friendly and accommodating! Their decor & atmosphere is as warming as their food. The delicious & beautifully decorated dishes leave your palate wanting more. A colorful explosion of an organic soul! Highly recommend it!

We were lucky enough to have Sunday brunch in this beautiful artistic place. You need to make a reservation before you go. The food is great. What made the food experience here unique is serving simple dishes yet very high quality ingredients. I recommend “home made potato rosti” it is a very light and yummy dish. Don’t leave without trying “toasted mosbolletjie” with cream and apricot jam! It is one of a kind. The signature drink here is “vietnamese coffee”. It has the right amount of condensed milk if you need a little sweetness in your life 🎼😉. The service is as perfect as everything else in this beautiful place.

Out of this world... big surprise. Decor, menus, food, the personell: amazing. We had breakfast... what an experience. Very quiet and cozy place and romantic. Farm fresh eggs, housemade baked breads... A must. Little difficult to find parking... but its feasible.
Anisa White
Very kind personal, seems they rushing over but they was so friendly! The main thing is better to clear all ingredients in menu because Mesclun salad have an onion inside but they didn’t clear it in menu was upset cuz I have allergy 🥵 Btw coffee is unique

Great spot for la good lunch experience in Capetown, everything was so tasteful, we really enjoyed it.
Ric VAN WEELDEN
A really smart place which manages an effortless blend of lovely food and smooth service in a wonderful ambiance. I would go back any time, if it weren't for the fact that we live in London.
Lisa Heilbronn
Wow - friends had been recommending this place for some time. I had a.combo of breakfast and lunch and it was fantastic. Vietnamese coffee was perfect and the bockwurstndish was perfect. I really enjoyed the toast, cream and jam on the side. A+++++

The food is art and you can sit and eat the art. The decor is stunning and the staff knows their stuff. Love the place.

Had the most delicious breakfast. Not the first time . Very sophisticated. And great sercive. Well done to all staff and owner
Godfrey Nkwane
The best homely lunch place by far. The trout dish is divine!
Rorisang Moseli
Amazing food with solid service. Interior second to none. I've been here a few times and it is now a very firm favourite. Highly recommend the veal & lamb dishes.

There is an uneasy arrogance with your waiters (but not the runners), beside the condescending manner in which they address patrons. For instance if you order decaf black, Norman asks “Latte or cappuccino” When I suggested it can’t have any milk his response is “you need to be specific!” ?! The water ordered upon arrival only arrives with the coffee! Seating was also not in waiting order. Walk in guests simply took up seats as they wished. Inside seating was denied at 11:00 as “ we have a full lunch booking”. My main order was delivered promptly by a runner. The neighboring table had not received their food even after I had finished mine. We ordered close on the same time. Lastly no waiter checked on the food or if I wanted to order anything further. Impolite, and totally unacceptable.

I ate art. Great service from Robben. The flavors are unbelievably explosive. Great fusion ice teas.

Great food here. I'm writing this review about 8 months after I visited but I still remember being pleasantly surprised but the food. The food tried to remain as South African a possible and I really appreciated that. The next time I'm in Cape Town, I'd more than likely try to go back for another meal.
Christopher Dean Mills
Had Bebotie Frikkedelle - was delish. Service is excellent and atmosphere is good. Definitely a restaurant for the cultivated foodie to tryout in Cape Town, and even go back a couple of times, you won't be disappointed.
Dionne Mutsonziwa
The decor, location and the menu are trendy. The coffee delicious. If you in the area I would definitely give it a try and you will not be disappointed!

Favorite restaurant in Cape Town, Best food, best drinks, best staff!
Toby Orford
Sublime. Nothing else to say. Except to say I am grateful for the high standards and consistency.
Ericka De Vries
Amazing, you must try the french toast!!!! Will definitely be back.
Nick Paul
Excellent service, stylish, yet relaxed atmosphere and of course that food! Wonderful breakfast as always, popular favorites done well and with a unique twist.
Wendy van Deventer
Lovely atmosphere. 5* Food and service. Parking a problem to find - R24 for 90mins; but we'll definitely be back for breakfast. :)
Chrisoula Kavakos
Absolutely enjoyable!!! Loved everything about it. Thank you for a great experience
Alexander Ryan Brits
le macaron est tout simplement merveilleux, chapeaux bas!
Inus Prinsloo
Waiting and paying for cold main courses that we had to wait for for 30 minutes is unacceptable
Caroline
Superb breakfast of poached eggs, hollandaise sauce and artichokes. Their Vietnamese coffee is an absolute must. Best potato rosti in Cape Town. Delightful waiter who went the extra mile to find us a table.

So...disclaimer. I don't even want to give Hemelhuijs a rating of 1...I want to give a big fat 0!

I have had some bad restaurant experience...but this definitely tops the list! I arrived at the restaurant at 10am. I was told the restaurant is full and they took down my number and put me on a waiting list. I looked at the list and only one other number was on there. So basically 2 of us on the waiting list.

I went for a jog...and at 12pm I called and the manager was like...sorry we still don't have tables. All the tables we are filling up now are from people we have reserved. I asked...Im one person and you can put me somewhere? And basically her answer was no and she hung up. So I'm mad obviously...I called again at 2pm and said...do you mean to tell me that from 10am to 2pm a table still hasn't opened up and she said...well the kitchen is about to close!

I am absolutely disgusted and appalled by this behavior. From reading the comment below from Thando K, it shows me that people who look like me clearly are not wanted in this restaurant.

Next time, don't waste my time by taking my number and saying we will put you on a waiting list...look me in the eye and tell me that we don't want your business here!!!!!!!!

JUST DISGUSTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thando K
Dissapointed in today's poor service. We often book this heavenly place for work and social meetings. Yet today my table was "given away". I booked a table with Patti for 12h30, was there at 12h30 and was rudely informed that the table was given away. When asking why as it was only 12h30 now, I was given a new reason - suddenly my booking was for 12hoo. Thankfully our calls are recorded , and I could go back to listen to myself confirming our 12h30 booking this morning. Thank you to Villa 47 for saving the day.

What a stunning spot! I love this place so much because every time feels better than the last. It’s so difficult to choose favourites from their menu but the lime grilled chicken and aubergine dishes are some of my favourite. They also have the most beautiful and amazing selection of desserts. You almost just want to take everything in the store home. It is also perfect for breakfast or a tea/coffee date. I cannot rave about this place enough and it is worth every cent.
Farzana Dalvie
Hemelhuijs is a hidden gem in the CBD, amazing spot to have breakfast at.I opted for the French toast with salted caramel and banana , which was scrumptious and filling. I also loved the freshly crafted juice as I had the apple, celery and ginger one. The service was prompt too given that they were quite busy.My overall experience was great and I would definitely head back soon!
Said Kekhia
Nice location and interesting interiors. Staff were very friendly and informative. The oversized menus (they were huge) showcased a huge variety of original dishes and drinks. Portions are huge and well priced. The panfried veal was absolutely amazing. Good job guys

I read about Hemelhuijs in Lonely Planet and I was very happy I came! I knew I was onto something special when I was presented with the menu, it's beautifully designed and interesting :) My anticipation of the feast to come was heightened with the fabulous bread and special za'atar and olive dip they served.

The standout appetizer for me was the miso aubergines, yum! I had a potatoe rosti with poached eggs and smoked trout for my main and it was also excellent.

I wasn't taken with the passion fruit cheescake as it didnt really taste like its namesake. Coffee was amazing though and so was my rosemary and grape drink :)

Wish I lives in Cape Town so I can visit again and again!
Amy Kruger
This was my first time at Hemelhuijs for breakfast and I was absolutely blown away! The decor is beautiful and creates a very calm and peaceful atmosphere. My sister and I both loved our eggs Benedict with grilled artichokes! Special mention must be made to the bread used, it was to die for! They also have a great selection of freshly squeezed juices that were delicious.

Undoubtedly one of the best breakfast spots in Cape Town! That's why it's got a 5-star rating from us! 🥇

What can we say about Hemelhuijs😍... it's name translates into "heavenly house", which adequately describes the visual and oral sensations you are to encounter upon entering

it's hidden away at 71 waterkant street, and has classy interiors;their usually brightly painted walls are decorated with brassy 19th century cake tins amongst a cornucopia of intriguing artifacts - some of which are on sale such as plates and jugs (they change their wall colour every so often, making it feel like a new place each time☺️)...

😧Their eggs Benedict is out of his world! 🍳🥚while we think the portion is small (perhaps it's the glutton's unending void of a stomach that is speaking here 👀), it is well worth it!

It is a well curated gastronomic experience you'll find yourself failing to articulate to friends who have never been... and the reason is that they must simply go themselves (then you can all sit in silence unable to describe what you've just experienced)

They make their own bread called Mosbolletjie which is a South African heritage bread with aniseed which gives the bread subtly sweet and herbal notes (I would compare aniseed's taste akin to liquorice)... have it fresh or toasted🍞 it doesn't matter... enjoy!

The staff are honestly among the best in Cape Town not just for quality of service but friendliness... as a small establishment, this gives it a homely feel. For but a moment, it's easy to forget you're eating out of the comfort of your home... it transports you into what one imagines a small-holding Farm's kitchen would produce. Absolutely incredible!

TIP: breakfast is served all day 9am - 4pm Monday to Friday, and 3pm on Saturday , BUT it is closed on Sunday... to be safe, and because it's VERY popular... be sure to make a reservation ☎️

Really great brunch experience! Had the honey rooibos ice tea which was sweet and refreshing as well as the bacon, avo and egg on mosbolletjie bread. Everything was fresh, beautifully presented and generous in size.

Great vibe - outside is buzzing with colourful pedestrian traffic while inside seating offers a more serene environment. Understated elegance (incl quality of all things glass) was a perfect match to the kitchen's standard - LOVED the artichoke / egg / hollandaise breakfast. Service is relaxed but efficient. First visit to Hemelhuijs - and it will definitely not be the last!
Wikus Du Toit
Extremely interesting menu and amazing crockery. Excellent service. Food is clever, layered and delicious. Great choice for breakfast and lunch.
Rigard & Jeanine
Hemelhuijs directly translated means ‘Heavenly House’ and aptly describes a visit to this establishment. A fantastic menu, including great coffees, supplemented by exceptional service. Interior is tastefully decorated. Both the breakfasts we had was accompanied by a slice of freshly baked ‘mosbolletjie’ bread - a traditional South African bread. Looking forward to our next visit.

I had really pleasant experience at this restaurant.

The food is beautifully and interestingly presented. Great attention to detail is paid and there are unusual artistic porcelain salt @ pepper containers and sugar cubes.

The food was great, although portions are slightly small relative to the price.

I ordered the soft scrambled eggs on toast and it was absolutely delicious. The were fluffy and scrambled to perfection.

The service was top notch as well.

I'll definitely come back here.

Lovely relaxed atmosphere, the staff were very friendly when interacting with us. I had a table outside to enjoy some of the good weather.

To start off I had homemade strawberry lemonade, which was refreshing. For starters I ordered the baked aubergine fries with miso soup. The aubergine was crispy on the outside had a nice crunch when biting into it. The miso soup was full of flavour could be a dish on its own.

For main course I had the soft ricotta dumplings with asparagus, charred corn and black garlic. This dish was well prepared each element came alive and complimented each other on the plate.

I also ordered the steamed celery hearts, golden sultanas and Lisbon lemon. My favour part of this dish was the golden sultanas, each bite giving a burst of flavour.

My guest for the day had the warm hot smoked salmon with preserved lemon, marinated white bean and remoulade dressing. She enjoyed her meal.

I recommend spending your day here
Didi Tsitsi
Was pleasantly surprised by the warm atmosphere despite the cool black and grey aesthetic. Very modern, and the menu design is stunning. Food is presented extremely well and their breakfast off egg and date loaf was the perfect mix of tastes. Will definitely be back for more.

Don't get confused, Hemelhuijs isn't actually in De Waterkant, rather on Waterkant Street in Town right by the Waterkant Bridge over Buitengracht.

As most of my reviews this winter have been quite cosy, this one will be too. I had a business lunch planned for a spot that was packed, thankfully. We walked 2 blocks and found this modern Cape Town cafe.

My carrot, orange and basil juice was bigger than I could handle, along with the unquestionably delicious cauliflower and black truffle soup, which (despite the menu) surprised my taste buds with the sepia butternut toast. Perfect 👌🏼

Service was great and if you're into trendy, modern feels, this is the spot for you.
Aletha Jeftha
I've just been to lunch at Hemelhuijs and what an experience. The service is something you would expect to find in a Michelin star restaurant.

Having read previous reviews about the tiny portions, I figured I'd beat the system and order 2 starters and a side (I was ravenous). I have no idea what those reviewers were on about, each starter could have easily passed for a main! I definitely couldn't finish it all.

I ordered the cauliflower and truffle soup with sepia toast, the honeyed sweet potatoes side and the pan fried duck livers in mascarpone with sage and fresh pear. The soup was gorgeous - thick and creamy and easily a main meal on its own. Just wish I could've tasted the truffle more though. The livers were lovely, but as it was also a creamy base, I think I was just too full by this point to appreciate it or the sweet potatoes. Oh and did I mention that they serve you mosbolletjie bread with a middle eastern inspired dipping oil. I would go back for this alone!

The place itself is absolutely gorgeous. Small though, so make sure to make a reservation to secure a table.

Dying to try their breakfast menu and will definitely be back for that.

What a wonderful little secret café in the Cape Town CBD. I had the Vietnamese coffee, which was extremely tasty and I love the idea of drinking from the bowl, followed with by the potato rostie and poached eggs, just as delicious.
Emma Haines
I really enjoyed my brunch at Hemelhuijs! An interesting atmosphere for a cafe but I enjoyed it. Had delicious food and the waiters were great ! I enjoyed the whole experience and the Celery and Ginger fresh pressed juice was AMAZING!😊💁🏻
Kriyanka Naidoo
One of the very few cafés that serve cocktails for breakfast!!
Really enjoyed the kumquats and citrus infused cocktail with just a hint of vodka (the alcohol was barely palatable) and the Vietnamese coffee warming bowl was perfect for the winter weather.
We tried the potato rösti with poached eggs and the veal. Both dishes were well seasoned and value for money in terms of portion size. The waiter was super friendly and the hospitality was great. I would definitely be back to try the rest of their menu.
Chengz
Really great space with excellent service. Lots of attention to detail and the Vietnamese coffee was a winner! Breakfast (potato rosti, poached eggs, roasted bacon) was well priced and yummy too.
Bronwyn Esterhuizen
A little piece of culinary heaven. Love this quaint, stylish and quirky spot in town. Expert breakfasts that will fill you for the day, beautiful, thoughtful menu and well designed dishes. Recommend the hot drinks too - almond milk white hot chocolate and the chai tea with steamed milk are both outstanding. Lovely service and relaxed, homely feel.
Steven Edwards
Had breakfast here a few days ago. The decor is calming and elegant. The interesting display on the wall of peppers from around the world goes well with the tasty and different dishes that are served.

The rosti with poached eggs and creme freche delicious. As were the brunch disges served on homemade Mosbolletjie bread.

The cakes definitely taste as good as they look. The waiters were calm and attentive.
Definitely worth a visit!

Had brunch here a few days ago and what a delightful experience it was. Excellent service and delicious ,well presented food. Will definitely return for lunch in the near future.

Righto

As far as coffee shops go this place checks most boxes.

There's an incredible level of attention to detail that has gone into the kitchen and plate-wear. They've achieved a completeness to the decor and the shop feels clean and refined without coming across as pretentious. The stone case cups and bowls feel right and even though coffee can get a little hot, the slight bit of anti-utilitarianism doesn't detract.

The food ingredients are top notch and the bread feels like it's been baked in-house (were there bits of star-anise in the bread?). I've been here twice and have tried different breakfasts and juices each time while sipping from a friends coffee (light-roast, Illy-esque).

My favourite juice so far is a springy kale, cucumber and apple juice, combined with the potato rosti with added avocado breakfast. Very satisfying. One has the option of adding smoked salmon, but my personal preference tends towards the avo.

To end off on the food section, their desserts are well worth saving space for. (we tried an apple strawberry cake with creme freche, tasted like an combo of a homemade apple pie and a sponge tart).

Also take notice of the floor when you get here. It's an odd observation but very impressive concrete work.

I'd say it's in your best interest to make a booking just in case if you're planning to go at a busy time.
Stuninho
Good little restaurant with some odd dishes that are delicious. Had the burger - strangest burger I have us but fantastic. The juices were an odd combination but were ok - had the carrot and pineapple one. Pity that they don't serve regular drinks.
Caro Van Aardt
Had lunch at Hemelhuijs for the first time last week. The service was really good and the food was absolutely delicious. I wanted the tuna carpaccio, but unfortunately they were out of stock, so I went for beef. It was sliced a bit too thickly for my liking, and the puffed rice - although a cute idea - didn't suit the texture of the meat at all. The salads some of the other people at my table took, were great portions and looked delicious. Especially the one with the strawberries and goats cheese.
My main was the calamari with a side of chips, and it was really scrumptious. The calamari itself was crispy on the outside, and super soft on the inside. The pineapple accompaniment suited the flavours perfectly.
Dessert was an apple and pear nougat tart, which really was moreish and yum, but their cheesecake took the top prize in my opinion. I'd go back just for that!
Imtiyaaz Hart
This hidden gem in Dewaterkant was the best find today!

The food was absolutely amazing! What stood out was the gourmet feel and the variations of flavors.

I loved the Fresh juices on offer and it truly was so tasty!

I would definitely recommend this place as they have plenty to offer, great vibe, attentive staff and amazing food!

Worthy of many returns!!!
Andre Scheepers
We were in the mood for something different and we were not disappointed. The food was good and the service was on the ball. Spot to return to when in Cape Town again.
Tracey Tray Ray Miller
Had the saddest tiniest MAIN meal. Won't be going back. Peas, asparagus, green beans, croutons with a cream dressing? I could of open a few bags of frozen food.
Zanenkululeko Belot
Finally got around to trying this gem out, and I will admit that it was well worth all of the hype.
I had the winter mesclun with truffled mustard dressing and soft boiled egg with smoked trout and it was gorgeous.
Jessica Stromin
Finally came to Hemelhuijs after hearing so much about it! It's small and fancier than most breakfast places, but the vibe is great and the food even better. I really enjoyed my potato rosti with creme fraiche, poached eggs and extra avo, and my boyfriend raved about his scrambled eggs with mosbolletjie toast. We both had juices which were fresh and tasty, and he had a cappuccino which is served in a beautiful clay cup.

A bit pricier than most of CT's breakfasts, so will reserve Hemelhuijs for special occasions. The service is professional and friendly. They get full quickly on the weekends so try book a table if you can to avoid disappointment.
Reza Salie
Few restaurants come close to the consistency and true expression of simplicity in the food they make. Words don't do justice to a Hemelhuijs experience, you have to try it for yourself to know what I'm talking about.
Robert Fridjhon
Fantastic surprise and a hidden gem. The service was excellent. Came for breakfast and was intrigued by what was on offer. Not the traditional slap up that i was initially looking for, but I was certainly not disappointed with what i got. Cooked and presented to perfection. I'll definitely be back!
Wayne De Nobrega
The rating says it all!! Healthy, tasty, vibey, service is very good and waiters friendly. I like the decor, lots to look at. If you in town and looking for a quick wholesome bite to eat, pull in. Make sure to give them a call as the restaurant itself is very small and seating very limited. Give the freshly squeezed juices a go as this is most definitely very refreshing. And the salads are out of this world. Well done guys.
Christine Du Toit
What a pleasure to go here for a brunch. The menu is always tastefully designed. The soup is really mouthwatering during the cooler days in Cape Town.
Nic Hern
Not your ordinary breakfast venue! The venue is very well done and despite not catching the early morning rays it is still very pleasant👍🏻 The breakfast options are not your standard breakfast choices yet there is a large enough selection that there is something for everyone. Despite not being you standard breakfasts foods the food is really good and when paired with one of their awesome juices it makes for a really amazing breakfast! I'll definitely be back 👍🏻
Dipäyän
Nice little corner restaurant with minimalist and soothing decor. However disappointingly the quality of food and service has gone down significantly over the past few months. It has turned into one of those pretentious joints that has lost its mojo. With so many new restaurants around the area with better food and services, this one really needs to up its game.
Nazneen Ahmed
Love this spot!

I really like the size of the Resturant as well as the earthy, simple decor.

Not to mention, the food is very satisfying. Although I often go for a continental breakfast, the traditional options at Hemelhuijs are a good substitute.

I enjoyed the homemade rosti with cream cheese and poached eggs and an apple, celery and ginger juice. Which were both amazing.

A new favorite spot.
Fabrizio Capello
I love this place
I always stop at list few times over for lunch when in town ...
The combination of fresh and healthy produce combine with a simple but testy cooking is a winning combination .
The meal here is a journey of discovering with out guilty feeling after u live .... OK maybe just a little after the pear and white chocolate tart desert BUT .....
Tuna carpaccio with fresh ginger and rice vinegar , soy and palm sugar dressing was fantastic , fresh and light , perfect starter on a hot day.
The Steamed chicken with miso , ginger, fresh coconut and fresh mushroom and lime was full of flavor with out overwhelm you in complexity and quantity . The desert ... Sublime and decadent at every spoon bite ... And did I mention that after the meal you actually feel healthier !! U need to try it
Emiko
Went for breakfast and ordered the Rosti. Was extremely good, poached eggs were perfectly cooked. It was filling but not too heavy. I would come back again.
Rochelle Harwin
Wonderful little gem!
Great service, fantastic food, amazing coffee. Loved the urban setting too. Even doggie friendly which always tickles my fancy.
I had Rosti with extra bacon. Highly recommended.
Rachel
I had the most divine Friday afternoon lunch at Hemelhuijs!

The waiter was attentive and really helpful and the food was amazing! I had the "burger" with truffle sauce which doesn't photograph too well but tasted so good!

Plus I got to taste "mosbollitijies" (spelling?) which I had only ever seen made on The Great SA Bake Off. (They were divine!)

I had such a lovely time, but I should warn you that a short glass of orange juice cost R45 so be prepared.
Samantha Hunter
Wow this is a secret place that should be shared! Absolutely delicious! The calamari (for a Jozi girl craving fresh seafood) definately had my taste buds on a wonderful adventure! Lovely atmosphere! Super friendly staff. Incredible experience!
Ryan Goodman
One of my favourite CBD lunch spots. Centrally located on the fanwalk, this popular (make sure you have a reservation) upmarket restaurant's eclectic menu (changes each season) is matched only by the eclectic decor. The salads are great but my top dish has to be the "the farm style beef frikadelle" - comfort food at its tasty best.
Helena
Really special little place. Had a lovely breakfast with the fam. Definitely going back! Great juices, decor and eggs benidict. Little bit of advice, make sure to make a booking beforehand.
Lvanmellek
Wonderful experience Every time! The food is delicious, a wonderful flavour twist on breakfast classics and a whole new world for mains. And the service could not be more pleasant or accommodating! They have just brought in their summer menu, which is a piece of photographic art all on its own and holds some veritable culinary delights! A must-do for all. Also, for those of you that are vegetarian, it is very friendly in this regard. Wonderful fresh juices and lovely teas/coffee as well. The eggs Benedict with artichoke hearts and bacon is a personal favourite for breakfast. Do book in season as they are in quite high demand.
Mike Varney
Surprised to have arrived to breakfast to be asked if we had a reservation. Having gobbled up a delicious artichoke eggs benny, two delicious cappuccinos and a delicious fresh juice we were on our way and understood the need to book
Michelle Matzdorff
From the moment you step in the door, Hemelhuijs is perfection. The waiters are dressed to a tee, the menus looks like a page out of one of Heston Blumenthal's books, the decor could be out of a Visi magazine (minus the newly painted dark green walls), and the baked goods on display are enough to make you salivate.

Service is generally fast and attentive, and the waiters aren't shy to make suggestions, and aren't unwilling to change things up a bit, for instance where I wanted ingredients in my juice swapped out.

The new Hemelhuijs menu is an experience in decisiveness, as there isn't an item on the menu that I don't want to try. I landed up going for the strawberries and yoghurt with tonka bean honey, and because I can't help myself, I ordered the lemon hummus, roasted tomatoes and rocket on toast too. The latter, I didn't even get a photo of because I was so excited to dig in, and unsurprisingly, I wasn't disappointed! The food was inspiring, and had the perfect contrast of flavours and textures. It's been a long time since I've smiled while eating, so well done Hemelhuijs!

I must admit though, I prefer the chermoula hummus they had on their previous menu, the dish that even Matt Preston tweeted about, but the lemon hummus was divine too! Definitely worth a try if you love hummus as much as I do.

All in all, another great experience at Hemelhuijs, and I can't wait to go back again. After my next paycheck though, of course!

I've been here twice for breakfast and this becoming a favorite Saturday brunch place. The service is warm and friendly from when you enter to when you leave (usually very full). I love the decor and table wear. Coffee mugs are interesting, without handles but keep your hands nice and warm. My favorite dish is the poached eggs with potato rosti. I think I need to visit again.

Hemelhuijs really lived up to its amazing reputation! The food was so delicious.

To start I had the beetroot and pear salad, which was really good. For mains I had the white fish & noodles in a coconut broth, it was honestly one of the best dishes I've had! I will definitely be back... Soon :)

Very classy restaurant in a great central city location on a pedestrian only street. Very welcoming. I popped in for a late lunch salad and had their beetroot salad. Delicately presented and tasty. Relaxing place.@

Excellent food - best sago in the world! I like the ambience and decor. Good music and company. Service is also very good. I'll be back for the lunch next time.

We had lunch at this wonderful place - the menus are amazing and we spent a while just reading them...such a hard choice as everything looked and sounded so good! I had the French onion soup which was fabulous- rich and robust and authentic. The service was good and the ambience lovely- I loved the music ..a very special place.

We recently visited Hemelhuijs to try out their new winter menu and it was everything we expected it to be, and so much more. Situated in the heart of Cape Town, Hemelhuijs is modern and elegant with a warm and homely atmosphere. The restaurant is effortlessly put together with gorgeous art, homeware, salts and oils displayed throughout. The décor is a combination of minimalist and quirky, from the solid oak chairs and tables and the collection of handcrafted crockery to the crouton lady and reindeer head that are mounted on the walls, everything has its place and together they make up the overall feel of Hemelhuijs.

I had my birthday lunch here and it was wonderful. The staff are so hospitable and the food is as usual- unbelievable. I had the peppered calamari and the rhubarb cheesecake for dessert. A beautiful setting and a wonderful atmosphere. Everyone needs to try Hemelhuijs.

Pretty expensive but the food was delicious. I had the poached egg with potato rosti and cream freche. Was so amazing. James had the benedict which was also amazing. Friendly waiter. You should prob book we had to sit outside in the freezing cold because we didnt. And they had black salt! I don't know why i found that so cool but i did.
Kieran Pearce
So far this is the best eggs benedict in town since the river cafe has absolved it's responsibility to create the best breakfast the world has yet to taste.

Definitely a must do.

Easily one of my favorite lunch spots in Cape Town. What a place! We went on a cold rainy day, and were fighting against the wind as we walked through the door. We were instantly greeted by wonderful food scents and ushered to our cozy table. The decor is fabulous, and while it is very chic, it's also quite welcoming. We set next to a wall of spices that are on sale, from chai vanilla to za'atar. It was heavenly! And what's better than a delicious lunch where you get to also shop afterwards - between the spices and gorgeous ceramics, I was very happy.

My boyfriend and I both had the chestnut soup and sort of had to stop ourselves from licking the bowl - it was that good! Really creamy and smokey - exactly what I was looking for in a mid-winter dish. For our mains, he had the salmon and I had the roasted chicken. Though we liked both of them, we definitely agreed that his salmon was a bit tastier. I can't wait to go back and try more things on the menu!

The pros: Chic, quirky decor. Good service, better food!

The cons: The bathroom is outside of the restaurant which can be annoying when it's cold and rainy. Not a big enough reason to not come here though!

This place exemplifies a certain kind of chic. One of the best all-around restaurant experiences I've had anywhere. Would eat here every day if I could.

Hemelhuijs is a lovely upmarket trendy restaurant in CBD. Love the ambiance of the place and the food is delicious. They serve a scrumptious french toast with ginger! The menu stands out as its like paging through a magazine! Can't wait to go back and try some of the other dishes on the menu.
Adrian Kaplan
Wow! Now this place has something special. Quirky arty decor, amazing fusion food with strange combinations that just work! I had the veal with mushroom and it was a total taste explosion! Super impressed...

One of my favourite spots to go, cosy indoor on a winter's day and lovely outside seating for a sunny summers day. Stunning menu and great food! Always a guaranteed awesome tasting meal. Also my favourite place for a saturday morning breakfast.
Carla De Klerk
If there were a place to epitomise the glories of food, that will have to be a small bistro found on Waterkant Street in the bustling inner circles of the Cape Town city bowl. Breakfast turns to lunch, lunch turns to champagne. Scratch that, champagne turns in to breakfast and so on.

“Hemelhuijs” translated directly from Dutch as “Heaven House” is everything its high-profile name promises, and more. Foodies and fatties alike will understand the reference, that feeling of absolute heaven when your tongue touches the first drips and slithers of the most satisfying, salivating bite of food you have ever tasted in your existence of a mortal, invoking images of angels singing, gold raining down on you whilst babies fly around you citing poetry.

Although the kitchen closes at 4PM on weekdays and 3PM on Saturdays, the menu is small, yet expansive enough for any taste that adores high-quality meals. Breakfast has a small selection, but the varieties on golden oldies make it a winner for a date with the girls, to a brunch with your partner. The artichoke heart eggs Benedict is to die for, and the preserved ginger and brie french toast will leave you rolling in your bed yearning for more for days to come. Now let’s just take a minute of severe critique. I judge a restaurant by their toast, call it picky, call it snobby. But if you serve me a slice of Albany that was left in the freezer for months until this particular day, I am not going to be happy to pay R65. I need to point out Hemelhuijs doesn’t touch Albany, not even to poke or prod it with a stick from far away. They serve homemade bread, sliced in thick pieces, free, yet spongy enough to soak up all juices. To me that toast invoked images of childhood, love and butter. What more can you ask from a restaurant?

Apart from an expansive wine list, you’ll also find craft juices, freshly squeezed of course. Imagine pink watermelon and ruby grapefruit juice sliding down your throat and invigorating your tasting nerves, leaving you go “AH” after every sip as if you are in a Coca Cola advert. Yes, it is that good.

Hemelhuijs is a beautiful space using, glass, wood and intrinsic metal designs to create a homely, yet arty vibe. The food has no comparison, albeit a bit pricey. The fact of the matter is, you walk out feeling treated, and they make hell sure you get treated with some of the most professional waiters and staff walking around. Take a trip down to Hemelhuijs, if you miss your mom, you’ll feel like the lost son returning home, if you are just hungry, well, get ready for some serious food porn. Stretchy pants recommended

I like going to places that have fun decor. There was an artwork made entirely out of toast. So cool and chic, loved the food too. If you want to go somewhere fun and different you should definitely stop here.

This quaint restaurant is tucked away in the waterkant accessible only via a pedestrian street. The chic decor blends with the unique cutlery and crockery. I went there for brunch and had the most delicious French toast topped with honey, Camembert, glazed ginger and rocket. This I decided to pair with one of their cold pressed juices.

The staff were friendly and we didn't have to wait long to be served. Definitely recommend you trying it out.

Highly recommended! Hemelhuijs is a small nook situated in a pedestrian street, making it's location rather unique.

The food is well curated and tasty and expect medium sized portions. I must highlight the "mosbolletjie" - two slices of the most amazing bread. The coffee is stunning and come in beautiful cups.

The service is some of the best I've had in Cape Town - quick and efficient without being too urgent. The smooth creativity flowing from the food to the decor is done with great taste and i absolutely love it.

Only negative side is the price at which some of the food comes such as adding extra crispy bacon to a breakfast for R25 or more, but can be pushed aside due to the general amazing experience. I would take both my parents and business partners here any day.

Hemelhuijs is my #1 Cape Town gem.

I think this has to be my top favourite restaurant in Cape Town. Not only is the food aesthetically pleasing in my plate each time I have eaten there, but the venue itself oozes with flair and creativity. I love how the theme seems to change according to seasons and trends. I enjoy everything from the menu design to the offerings, the plates, the way the salt is presented, every little detail will catch your attention and leave you mesmerized. That's how I was captivated. The food is excellent - portions, price, taste - no bad comment. And their hot chocolate is to die for! I have not been there for breakfast yet (only been for lunch) - I keep hearing awesome comments so I think it's on the cards soon.

I'm crazy about the interesting menu at Hemelhuijs. The coffee is great, egg breakfasts amazeballs and the sago porridge - oh em gee - is worth dying for. I could eat it all day. But I think what makes this place extra special is how it appeals to all of your senses. The decor is super cool and all the food and drinks are served with dark, heavy crockery. The only reason I'll mark it down a little is because the service is slow and quite unfriendly (you have to get up and find your waiter). Otherwise, go for a lazy brunch to beat them all!

This is one of the best if not the best eatery's in town , satisfy absolutely all my senses . The consistency in creativity and service are remarkable .

Great little place . Nice find . Really great atmosphere and decor. The food is amazing. Try the onion soup in the cold weather, amazing. Had the potato rosti breakfast ... Was really tasty . Was my second time here and loved it both times.
Garret Brent
It was a lovely venue, with beautiful art and interest pieces - a good setting. The breakfasts we had, however, were mediocre bordering on bland. This leads me to think that it's a pretty restaurant selling a brand experience and not a taste experience.
Michelle Flynn
Definitely above average for a breakfast experience... my best part is the decor & crockery, diffs to the norm. Dig these black mugs the coffee is served in.

Wonderful spot for breakfast! The gorgeous interior changes through out the year but always manages to inspire and delight!

The service is friendly, professional and seriously efficient.

This morning we had giant glasses of Villiera brut rose with poached eggs on a potato rosti and decadent french toast with ginger and brie! This really is a perfect weekend gourmet breakfast fix!

The rosti is a long standing favourite of mine but make sure to add the smoked salmon- it really makes the dish!

Just had a very late and very delicious breaki with my better half Hemelhuijs. They serve all day breakfast! Brilliant, fresh, simple food prepared perfectly...try the freshly made juices too. Healing food! Great people. I'll be back...

This little gem in the city is the ideal spot for a quiet lunch with a dear friend. You must try one of the cocktails, unusual combinations yet well constructed and sublime.

To eat the quail with saffron gnocchi was mind blowingly good.

Their glass tumblers are some the finest In the land, you can hook yourself up at the small tasteful counter where you can purchase the crockery and glassware the restaurant uses.

A must when in the city!!!!

Absolutely rocked my little foodie world. From that delicious mosbolletjie bread to that mindblowing calamari it was a superb experience - I'll be back soon!

What a breakfast and lunch spot. I keep returning because it never loses its touch. Scrambled eggs are amazing, creamy and light. Mossbolletjie toast is incredible and the coffee and fresh juices are some of the best around. Lunch is the same, fresh and top quality ingredients make Hemelhuijs a must in Cape Town. Service is friendly.

What can I say other than I plan to be back! The coffee and breakfast were excellent. The black salt was a interesting touch. The restaurant also sells crockery.
TheJoburgFoodie
Such a beautiful restaurant. The chef is also an artist and changes up the look of the restaurant every few months as well as making his own crockery. The food is both tasty and beautifully presented with julienned vegetables used to great effect. The black salt it also a really nice touch to this little eclectic restaurant. Beautiful food, beautiful place! Will definitely be back!

Absolutely love Hemelhuijs - it has unbelievably good food with flavours and ingredients seldom found anywhere else; good service and a location that makes you feel like you're sitting on a European sidewalk (especially in summer). Plus they make and sell (by order only) a coconut bread that changes lives.

Hemelhuijs also has an awesome array of freshly pressed juices that are way more enticing than the usual OJ or apple; and they serve their cappuccino in marble pots so I mean hello.

Try the french toast or the Eggs Benedict (to die for) and the Blood Orange juice if you feel like a little adventure in your vitamins.

This place gets my vote for sure!

A beautifully designed interior in a great location. The staff are friendly and well trained. Crockery and glassware are gorgeous.
I just found the menu very hard to navigate and the menu descriptions were different to the actual food that was served.

eg. Salmon gravadlax on the menu was actually smoked salmon, rather then cured with dill, sugar, lemon juice and salt.

I will try it again when the new menu comes out in a couple of weeks.

One of my favourite lunch restaurants in Cape Town. The food has fantastic flavour with interesting sauces. Their juices are also a winner
