Review La Mouette Restaurant - Cape Town Central

Dania Chughtai
Beautiful restaurant in Sea Point set in an old house. The ambience is romantic and relaxing. The new winter special menu is absolutely amazing value for money. The staff is so attentive and service is very quick. I could not fault anything with the food - everything from the taste to the presentation was top notch! Fine dining at a fraction of the cost. I can’t wait to go back again.

Scrumptious food. Super friendly service and a lovely atmosphere for a late Sunday lunch. That's usually when we eat and the service was still top notch. Food is well presented and gastronomical to my taste buds!!! Does not matter what you choose you will not be disappointed. I had to drop a star after tonight's experience. Service was friendly but we hardly saw the waiter. My expensive glass of wine I ordered was corked and nobody came to ask how it was. A bit of a disappointment but I will go back again. Maybe just one of those nights...

Wonderful and delicious food. Amazing service. And variety of omnivore and vegetarian meals. Lots of different options tasting menu with or without wine Or if you would like 2 or 3 course meals. Extra attention when it is a special celebration 😉

Winter menu was great, but I have a few considerations to make. Too many white wines with the pairing, perhaps you guys could explore a more warming set of drinks for winter season. Service was good, but timing between the plates was a bit off. On other hand, food was amazing and the artichoke risotto was one of the best risottos I had.

Excellent, delicious, on point food. It's pricey so probably best for a celebratory meal. Really great options though -- we did the spring 6-course menu with wine pairing and it's without a doubt the best degustation experience in Cape Town (and world class food & wine!). My husband and I had different meals for some of the mains and it was just incredible to taste all the various options. Money well spent! Can't wait to try the summer menu. The service is also quite excellent and the online booking option is the best I've ever used.

Joined La Mouette for the three course tasting menu. We were very happy with the service and quality of food and were perfectly full after three courses. We were happy we didn’t opt for the five course as we are both small eaters. The service was fantastic, our primary server was particularly jovial and attentive. The outdoor patio is large, grand, and a wonderful setting to enjoy an outdoor meal in the middle of the city. Each course was wonderful, the squid, the orecchiette with broccoli and goat cheese, and the black current parfait were in particular extra delicious. They provide blankets in case it gets cold and windy outside which is a nice touch.

Perhaps the best value for money tasting menu in Cape Town. The food is always beautifully prepared and exquisitely presented. 6 courses if Bliss. Highly recommended.

Wow wow wow I have have so many great things to say about this incredible place , we enjoyed a 5 course tasting menu. It was out of this world !!! And the waitron and hostess was incredible , super friendly and just incredible at what they do , I had such a great chat with all of them and I can’t say thank you enough for your hard work and dedication. You made our night out worth it all.

Food and service are amazing! Portions are big for 'fine dining'. My husband won with his food choices (it is always a competition) he ordered the tuna starter and lamb main - fantastic choice! I had the duck salad starter, very very good and the beef fillet main, also very nice however the lamb won! Dessert we both had the ferreiro rocher mouth watering! We were a bit dissapointed with the atmosphere, it being our anniversary wanted something romantic and toned down and intimate. The restaurant was very noisy it being busy and very 'light' not giving a romantic vibe at all. It was still a nice experience.

deserves ever single star! Service was fantastic, food full of flavour and creativity. And very good wine pairing to each meal. Well thought-out and executed! Really great place, loved it.

Each course is a delight. A discovery. And when you taste the wine they pair with their food your mouth explodes. One of the best meals I’ve had in SA.

Excellent dinner! We tried the 6 course wine tasting dinner. It was truly one of THE BEST restaurant experiences we have had anywhere! From the very different French onion soup, to the exquisite lemon meringue and "milk and honey" . . . and we were not disappointed by any of the middle courses! A well presented beet root salad, a ham hock tartiflette, pan fried calamari, lamb neck and beef fillet all surpassed expectations! And each of the wine pairings matched the deliciousness of the menu items! It was a true 5 star experience . . . Bravo La Mouette!

Thank you La Mouette. An excellent dinner on Saturday night. We had the tasting menu and enjoyed every dish and every bite. Always amazing full of flavour and textures. A must for everyone who loves fine, yummy and good food.

What a special dinner. We did the tasting menu. I am quite finicky but decided to give it a go. Tonight (after 26 years) I started eating avo, tuna and sweet wine. It was absolutely amazing. Whenever you het the chance to visit this amazing restaurant, please do. Friendly staff, impeccable vibe and food to die for. Thanks team La Mouette!!!!

Really enjoyed an evening at La Mouette last November together with my sister. We had a three course menu including wines and they matched with the food so well. The staff is wonderful and understanding how to please you. Thank you for this special experience. Absolutely recommandable!!!

Visited La Mouette for the first for time for a work event. What a culinary treat! Really enjoyed the seven course meal that was prepared. Absolutely delicious and will definitely be back for a return visit! Well done to the staff for such a special experience. :)

Lara and the team went out of their way to ensure my birthday party was spectacular! We are 20 foodies and everyone commented on their delicious food and excellent service! We loved having the place to ourselves and enjoying bubbly and croquettes next to the fountain before going upstairs with views of signal hill and a lovely long table! Thank you so much!

One of the best restaurants in Cape Town. So delicious, so well thought out and presented. Thank you for such an amazing experience!

Awesome taste, friendly service, great hideaway in busy Regent Rd. and special thanks to the congolese gentleman at the gate who made my cigarette breaks interesting and diverting!

My partner and I have been here 3 times for a few of our special occasions ... when booking a table, they always ask whether or not it is a special occasion and ensure that we have a beautiful time and are taken care of.

The 5 course set menu is our favorite .... we always choose different dishes to have a taste of everything.

Never disappoints !

Walking into La Mouette after several years of expectation, I could sense the cosiness brought about only by quiet confidence over years and years of successful execution, aided by a log burning fireplace on a chilly spring afternoon. Our lunch experience, free of avant-garde, delivered on its promise for taste and value and left each and every satisfied soul in our group seeking the gladdening of a Sunday afternoon nap. No fuss fine dining in its truest form. The lack of 5 stars is purely a factor of the critic’s mind: in my opinion, I believe the wine pairing of the Spring 2019 5-course lunch menu could use some TLC, only hitting the mark in 2 of 5 courses. However before the slightest sigh if discontent could work its way into the world, the creaminess of the croquettes, subtle sweetness of the dessert and delicately prepared ostrich fillet let it dawn on me: Having stood the test of ages in the (very competitive) Cape Town culinary scene, La Mouette continues to deliver a value-for-money, soul warming experience. I’d love to return, well done to the team for a satisfying experience!

I went in with super high expectations, and they were all exceeded! What an incredible dining experience, highly recommended. Can’t wait to visit again!

Food was good. Service was bad. Waiter was rude, condescending and unpleasant. Management however was awesome. Very impressed. However when waiter chirped manager and still got orders wrong it was frustrating. It was also frustrating when the waiter argued with us about correct wine temperatures. Wouldn’t recommend for value for money for a wine pairing however the food was decent.

La Mouette Restaurant opened in 2010 by Chef and co-owner Henry Vigar, his wife, Mari and their business partner Gerrit Bruwer. La Mouette offers seasonally inspired and modern food. With ever-changing and seasonally inspired menus, friendly staff and a beautiful and unique venue, La Mouette has become a firm favorite with locals and regulars as well as established itself as a return go-to for international guests.

Unfortunately, your experience at La Mouette depends on the weather of the day you visit (literally).

The first time we cam here it was raining and so we were seated inside, in a dark, cramped corner, with barely any space between us and the family at the next table (who I might add, had a young crying baby). While we enjoyed the food, towards the end of the evening my husband actually commented that he was starting to get a headache from squinting in the poor lighting. While we enjoyed the food, the evening as a whole was rather disappointing.

The second time we came here, we were seated outside and it was as if we were at a whole new restaurant. We had the same set menu both times (once again, the food was great), but being in a pleasant atmosphere even makes the food more exciting.

I might add, though, that both times we were eager to finish up our food so that we could go down the road to the MOJO Market for a "better selection of desserts" than what was on the set menu (which we did request to change to another dessert but this was promptly denied by our waiter).
Raeesah Ebrahim
We expected so much more from the food the main dishes seemed to lack flavour and my pasta dish the past a was over cooked , the best dishes were the dessert they were to die for! If you’re a dessert lover then you’ll love what they offer
Apol
Had the set 5 course dinner. The tuna tartar was quite bland. The squid dish was crusted and seemed to have been deep fat fried but the coating they used was too salty. The dish that had a prawn and 2 mussels with the fish was underwhelmed by the tomato soup they drench over it by the table. The only amazing part of the dinner was dessert, a strawberry sorbet that came with custard.

Been putting off writing this review for a while now ... somewhat in denial that my experience was rather lackluster and I had the highest expectations.

Came for the 3 course seasonal menu for only R395. My friend and I decided to order a pre starter dish of the beef baos. It was ok, a tad on the dry side...this was served after our complimentary bread which was also just ok... served with basically beef fat drippings, which solidified a few minutes after being placed on the table.

Then came the starter: I had the tuna tartare with frozen grapes and almond flakes. It had some kind of cream cheese globs on the plate that just didn’t work with the rest of the components on the plate.

For mains I had the ostrich done as per the chef’s recommendation- medium. Slightly over cooked and served with a raspberry jus that was super tart and did nothing for the dish. My friend was not a fan of her beef main either. We both left most of the dish on our plate.

For dessert I opted for some passion fruit dessert with this gorgeous white chocolate ganache. Definitely the star of the evening. My friend was sorely disappointed when her lemon meringue came out deconstructed...

We were then surprised with macaroons when our bill was brought out. Very lovely, but really didn’t quite make up for our disappointment.

I’m not sure if it was this specific evening or the construction of the spring menu itself.. but the food just did not work for me.

One of my first ever fine dining experiences and I must say my next will have quite a standard to live up to! Each and every course made to perfection! The price validates the taste 😉

We had the 5 course Winter Special at La Mouette, and every mouthful was phenomenal - particular highlights were the sinful cheese and truffle croquettes, the west coast mussels (cooked to absolute perfection), and the deconstructed lemon meringue for dessert. The flavours of each dish complemented each other so well, and other than the veggie baos, no dish disappointed. We ordered coffee to end off our perfect meal, only to find out they even come with macaroons! Impeccable service, and the food was absolutely worth the price. We also loved our table right next to the cosy fireplace. Wonderful experience and I would love to return soon.

La Mouette has been around since 2010 and yet this was our first ever visit to the restaurant. The Tudor home lends itself to a certain charm and to top that, the menu changes seasonally. Clinton, Lara, Dave and I went for lunch on a cold, wet Sunday. Thankfully the fire was well stoked and the view out of the window improved when the sun showed her face.

What a lovely experience, we had the winter special (five course) vegetarian option and I thoroughly enjoyed all the dishes. The ambience is warm and cosy whilst the service is excellent, our waiter was attentive throughout the evening. My overall experience was pleasant and I'd definitely visit again.

Ambiance: nice cozy restaurant with fireplace for cold winters days. Spacious table area and not crammed together like other restaurants where you can hear the other tables conversation.

Service: had a warm welcome greeting when arriving here. Our waiter was kind and friendly. The only negative was the food came really quick if you want to enjoy your wine.

Food: food was delicious my top 2 dishes was the smoked brisket risotto and the deconstructive lemon meringue.

Overall experience was okay had better food and wine pairing at places like homespun and creation. The reason for the 3 is that I was still busy with my wine when the waiter comes with your next meal and the next wine. It was like he was rushing us to get done. Also, my one friend can’t have garlic as he gets really sick. The chef couldn't accommodate him as the whole menu has got garlic in it. There was just one option for him and that was the beef fillet. A bit sad that one ingredient can turn your experience upside down and change your point of view.

I did enjoy my evening there, would I come back maybe will see how they summer menu will look like. But will definitely give their other restaurant a try Upper Bloem. Been stalking them on Instagram 😉

Great for an inyimate winter dinner. Cosy with great food, wine and attentive waitresses! We had the 5 course einter special...the portions are good and there's a lot of variety of flavours!
Nix006
Winter special was great!!! I had the meat options and my cousin had the vegetarian option. To start...Cheese and truffle croquettes were a stand out for us. The linseed crackers with goats cheese was not great the cracker was to overpowering to taste the other toppings. the pea soup was very concentrated in flavor (I am not a fan of pea soup but could eat that a few times a week). Lemon meringue dessert was really a great way to end the meal and I don’t really ever order lemon desserts but that was so good I’ll reconsider the next time I come face to face with a lemon based option

Knowledge was a fantastic waiter and really added to our experience.

We did the tasting and the food was magical.
We never waited long for our meals.

We haven’t stopped recommending the restaurant to people we know and we will most certainly be back.

What a momentous dinner with friends!

The restaurant is actually a lot nicer than I thought it would be, aesthetically! I didn’t have that much to go by except for the pictures but i actually found it to be warm, intimate and a little rustic!

The waiting staff appeared to be comfortable with the contents of the menus. When seating us, the waiter noticed that our table was unsteady before we did and promptly moved us to a more stable table which I think, deserves special mention, as far as excellent service goes!

Although we didn’t exactly “love” every dish served to us, we certainly enjoyed the la Mouette experience as a whole!

We popped in on Sunday evening to try their winter special (5 courses for R295) and it was delightful! It was my first time at La Mouette and everything from the service, to the staff, not to mention the food - was brilliant! Our waiter, Dereck, gave us the perfect amount of attention and had a wonderful spirit! Michael, the manager, was pleasant and full of jokes and came to make sure we were happy with every meal. Truly a wonderful experience! If you have the opportunity to dine here, take it! Please note: I eat quite a bit and I was initially worried I would not be full at the end of the course - needless to say, I was battling to finish my meals. Go hungry!

What an incredible dining experience in Cape Town. From the moment we arrived, the service and attention to detail could not be faulted. Adelaide, our server for the evening has incredible knowledge of local ingredients, food preparation and boutique wine, she makes brilliant suggestions and impressed us greatly. The meals (we chose three course with tapas) were as close to perfect as I’ve experienced in Cape Town, seasonal, detailed, but also extremely satisfying. The passion fruit curd stands unrivaled as the single best desert I’ve had in SA. The macaroons will make you think ‘Oh that’s what they are supposed to taste like’ - flawless. I’ll be back.

Last night we decided to treat ourselves to the La Mouette tasting menu🍴, and having managed a booking 2 hours before👀, we can just say the stars aligned and it was meant to be...

Upon arrival the staff were warm, welcoming and directed us to our table where we waited for a friend. We were never rushed, nor expected to account more than once for our friends' lateness... instead the staff brought a bottle of water and allowed us to sit undisturbed until everyone had arrived😊

The toughest choice of the night was whether to choose the 6-course tasting menu or the 3-course tasting menu🤤; we chose the latter upon recommendation by our waitor and we didn't regret it once. We opted out of the wine pairing per course 🍷 as we wanted to drink bubbly instead 🍾🥂

2of 3 of us chose croquettes as tapas 🧀🧀🧀(they were delicious, but by the 3rd we were overwhelmed🤕). We then all chose the smoke pork belly with umami jelly, almonds, pea and ham velouté as a starter👌🏾 the pork belly was well cooked, moist and just fell apart as you cut into it

🍽Our mains too varied; 2 of 3 chose the beef fillet (medium) with fermented shiitake, sweet potato and aubergine and miso pureé, while the other chose Ostrich with BBQ carrot pureé and bolognaise sauce... unfortunately one of the beef fillets was too rare for our friends' liking (but both the manager and the waitron apologized, offered to have it remade but upon our friends' refusal, the manager offered a glass of bubbly on the house as apology 🥂)

The came the dessert round 👀🍮🍧🍰🍫 we each had different desserts; I for one had the strawberry crunch with custard cream, almost granola and mint 🍓🍓 the strawberries were slightly frozen, fresh and unsweetened contrasted with the custard cream and granola which were sweet.

Another person had the milk and honey 🥛🍯, goats cheese icecream, honeycomb and honey cake 🍰 which looked incredible...

The last person had the savoury Karoo crumble cheesecake (which he didn't enjoy, and thus subsequently opted for the honeycomb cake)

Overall an indulgent, enjoyable night with great ambience and music playing, great food and company... highly recommended, esp for bigger group dining or alternatively intimate dining for two 👌🏾

TIP: you can either book online on their website 💻 or alternative you can call ☎️

We came to Cape Town armed with a heap of restaurant suggestions from our friends in London – and the first stop on the list was La Mouette in Sea Point. The restaurant was quiet, relaxed and refined and we were served by a wonderfully attentive waiter. We had the choice of the 3 course or 5 course menu – we went for the 5 course with the wine pairing (we were on holiday after all). At first glance at the menu, I wasn’t sure it was going to be possible to have the 5 courses as a vegetarian, however once we had spoken to the waiter it was clear that this wasn’t a problem at all. They were unfazed by the request and were able to easily make substitutions.

We went to celebrate our joint birthday/anniversary and it was an amazing romantic night. The food was amazing. We chose the 6 course tasting menu which is exactly right. The tapas were a standout, both the pork belly and ostrich stood out as favorites, but the calamari with squid and tomato essence was the highlight of the night. Go it’s worth the hype.
Jonathan Ratcliffe
Was great - had the five course option - gnocci was the best of the things we had and the bread with dip was epic at the start. Great service, great vibe, great food

Good atmosphere, great starters, great desserts! Very friendly service and welcome! More attention to be paid to mains. Will definitely visit again!
An awesome French with a Mediterranean flare fine dining establishment in a casual ambience. It's appeal is its all round welcoming effect from its decor to the warm hospitality the staff at the restaurant give you.

The menu is quite versatile giving you options for taste kitchen degustation type selection or just your course choice. Went for the 3 course selection with their wine pairings with the many options felt quite spoilt for choice. Tried the lamb, starter, duck main and ferrero chocolate desert which was one of the best bespoke selections accompanied with their red wine suggestions. Food is flavourful and not at once thought it was out of theme. Well done on keeping the central French theme going as one could easily get lost given the sheer number of options.

Thought the waiter was well timed with serving the meals as well as explaining to everyone their selection of dishes given the number of people at the table.

All round a great restaurant which makes for an awesome experience shared amongst friends.

My husband and I had dinner with a couple of friends at La Mouette. It was our first time dining here and we'll definitely be back. The restaurant is situated in a beautiful old home with a large terrace that I'm sure is lovely on a summer's evening. The interior is warm and inviting with a roaring fire place. Perfect for a cold winter's night. We went for the full experience, being the 6 course tasting menu and it was a treat. The first three courses are standard (onion soup, goat's curd and ham hock) and one has a choice for the remaining three courses. I went for the mushrooms with hazelnut pasta followed by a skirt steak and finally a melting Ferrero Rocher inspired dessert, while my companions had the pork belly followed by the duck breast and finally the same dessert. Portions are a good size for the price and they start you off with complimentary bread and a variety of spreads and dips and end off with macaroons. Service is slick and each course is explained to you table side. There is quite a bit of theatre and dishes are often finished off at the table. My only complaint would be that we waited quite long between the third to final courses, but it was a super experience all round.

What an incredible evening. I went for my anniversary dinner and was blown away by the quality of the food. Every bite was a taste sensation and, coupled with a roaring fire, this was a night to remember.

I was a bit disappointed by the lack of vegetarian options for the main course on the set menu but the manager was kind enough to organize a second option for us. The place was full, so service was a tiny bit on the slow side but, other than this, it really was a perfect evening. I will be back

Love love love La Mouette. It never disappoints. Had the 3 course dinner and honestly couldn't pick a favourite from the mushroom pasta starter, duck breast main and melting Ferrero dessert... the croquettes were SO good it didn't stand a chance getting photographed. As always, excellent service and fantastic wine... 👏🍷😍
Imtiyaaz Hart
I love coming to La Mouette as they NEVER disappoint! 💯

The food was, as always, absolutely amazing! The flavor combinations were dancing on my palate 💕

The ambience, the mouth watering food and exceptional service makes this one of my favorite restaurants in Cape town indeed!!!

Can't wait for the spring menu 😋
Darren Franks
Amazing setting but the food wasn't as inspiring as other reviews claimed. The deconstructed Onion soup was tasteless and not dissimilar to dish water and the rest of the courses were forgettable. The duck course was probably the tastiest however was overlooked (despite asking for it to be served pink). The wine on the other hand was fantasist - Albeit over shadowed the food. Nice experience but a 'been there and done that' for me. Won't hurry to return.
Jess Styles
What a wonderful dining experience. The service was excellent and the food even more so. We went for the winter special which comprised of a 4 course meal with a glass of wine for R295. It was really great value. I definitely can't wait to go again and try some of the other menus.
Bame Modungwa
La Mouette was an experience! Opted for the 3 course (without wine pairing). Some exciting options make it a difficult choice per course but I went with the mushrooms to start, duck as main and chocolate for dessert. The mushrooms starter was the winner for me, creamy but flavour, with a depth of flavour from the varied mushrooms, brought together but the hazelnut pasta. Amazing! The duck was great, bigger portion size, recommended medium. Roast potato was a little under but flavourful. In both meals the saucing made the dishes. The chocolate dessert was a little dense, it's called the melting Ferrero, but bar the sauce they finish it off with (which was only a little warm) I didn't quite get the melting aspect. Still, I left an extremely happy woman. Special mention goes to the berry financier dessert that I got to try from my sister, an exciting dish, light and fresh, great way to end the meal. Great lunch, pricey but more than worth it.

Ps the menu on Zomato is outdated, they do not offer a la carte so check out their website for updated menu.

What an amazing experience. The setting is unusual and interesting with people sitting in all the different rooms. The service is absolutely fantastic. You feel very special throughout the evening. The way in which the food is prepared, presented and served is of top standard. Treat yourself to the wine pairing while you are there as it really makes the meal so much more pleasurable. Although some might be scared off thinking its a bit pricy, this is not your average night out and for a special treat this is something that you will remember for a very long time. All round an amazing evening with some of the most interesting food combinations I have ever had.
Citadel
We had a wonderful experience. The staff were friendly but unobtrusive and the food, exquisite. The restaurant has a lovely ambience too. Highly recommended.
Nic Hern
An absolutely amazing dinning experience! We had the 3 course menu and I can have nearly say that I regret not getting the six course👍🏻 The food is superb and the service on point 👍🏻 The portion size is generous which seems to be unique of a restaurant of this type. I will definitely be back!
Sean Bos
Perhaps my expectations were to high...
My partner's croquettes starter was better than the tuna tartar that I had, which was unexpected as I am a tuna fanatic, however, the croquettes were outstanding!
We both decided on the beef sirloin main course and my 'bleu' steak was medium at best...
Carrot cake dessert was good, carrot cake with a twist, tasty and excellently plated!
The weather was playing the part so the table on the patio was excellent, the majority of patrons were seated outside in the beautiful courtyard, ambience was fair.
Unfortuanly the service was not up to the standard that I expect from an establishment of this decree.
Fine dining nonetheless.
Sam
It was a very warm evening so most tables, if not all, were all sat outside in the courtyard. A beautiful setting, though it lacked a bit of lighting to see all in the intricacies of each of the dishes.

We opted for the 7 course wine pairing summer tasting menu. Waiters were very attentive and knowledgeable of the wines and dishes. Dishes were superb. Menu is changed every 8 weeks and I can't wait to try another flavour journey.

Our friends visiting from overseas were very pleased with everything about the evening.
Andrew Campbell
I was very interested to return to La Mouette as the last time we were there, they were enduring building renovations across the road. There is now very convenient parking across the road.

Previously we had sat in the courtyard outside as conditions were balmy, but this time it was anything but. Howling wind and 28 degrees at 7:30pm. So everyone was seated inside.

We went with the six course tasting menu which was superb. We had:
- Crispy duck with red cabbage
- Vegetarian (mostly beetroot, carrots and roasted root vegetables)
- Fontina ravioli with truffle sauce
- Tuna sashimi with crispy calamari and mussel
- Ostrich Carpaccio
- Sirloin with onion and rich sauce
- Gnocchi with peas and asparagus
- Ferrer Roche dessert
Plus a couple of glasses of rosé bubbly, Springfield unwooded Chardonnay, and Keermont Terrasse - a great white blend of Chenin/Chardonnay/Sauvignon Blanc/Viognier

I'd highlight the ravioli, tuna (but for the calamari and mussel), and dessert as the standout dishes. I'm fanatical about gnocchi, and theirs was a little disappointing. So I marked them down 0.5 on each of food, heat and sound. Food was great, but not a 5, the blustery wind required closed windows, which raised the temperature past a 5 star experience, and ditto the noise, given a full restaurant with wooden floors (there was sound dampening material Uber the tables, but it needs additional solution). Maybe we're just old - it was our 19th wedding anniversary

My favourite South Africa restaurant.

Everything on the menu is a delight.
I have enjoyed the taster menu with elegant wine pairing several times. It changes once a season if I am not mistaken.

Always well thought through.

And the staff are great. Incredibly personable and professional.
Shaun Loots
The atmosphere, service, food, management and place was ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!!!! This was truly a wonderful experience! The lamb dish was a treat to look at and even better to eat. A definite must for any food connoisseur!!

Great place.
Fine dining, unique flavours.
Really well priced and always full.
Not too difficult to get a booking and they often have specials so look out for that.
No Time To Waste
One of the top restaurants in Cape Town according to eat out magazine. The outside is lovely but it's a bit chilly for our liking and we moved inside.

Opted for a tasting menu. One with wine and two without. Wine pairing is recommended, however!
The food was absolutely delicious and service attentive.

I would definitely come back here next time I'm in Cape Town
Julian Luus
I don't claim to be a foodie in any sense of the word, but La Mouette is my all time favourite. I've eaten there as many times as I can afford and each and every time was an amazing experience. It may seem pricey to most of us, but all things considered; its a bargain!
Nicole Muskat
What an exceptional experience from beginning to end! The ravioli starter was sensational and the gnocchi with peas, asparagus and parmesan was fantastic. The main highlight was dessert - a deconstructed carrot cake. Sponge cake with a blood orange sorbet accompanied with fruit, candied walnuts and a praline cream. Overall the best place I have been to in CT.
Chantal Muller
Had the tasting menu today... I have had better. Main issue was that the beef was very overdone... Not even slightly pink on the inside. My partner had the potato gnocchi, which was tasty. Quite disappointed with the tuna sashimi dish, which turned out to be more of a tuna carpaccio. The ravioli was quite nice, but a bit oily.. Loved the crispy bits. All the other courses were OK. Ambience was good and the waiters were good. My advice would be to order off the main menu and not the tasting menu... The dishes looked really tasty and people seemed satisfied.
Went back and had a great experience. Changed rating from 3.5 to 4. Definitely glad I gave them another try. Awesome! Went back again 2019...added pics. X

A wonderful experience from start to finish.

As soon as we sat down we were brought artisan bread with a cheese spread, which was on the house.

We shared a caprese salad to start with which was magnificent. The tomato foam added such a unique texture and flavour.

I ordered the ostrich which was amazing. The meat was perfectly tender and the whole dish oozed with flavour.

For dessert I had the black sesame cake which tasted as incredible as it looked. It was a deconstructed cake served with coconut sorbet and a cookie base. I would honestly come back just for that.

The atmosphere here is rather lovely as well. They actually had really good music playing (Bonobo, Jamie XX).

I highly recommend La Mouette.
Had the taste/pairing menu which is a different and enjoyable experience. I'm a bit fussy but my dinner partners ate everything. Love the concept.

Fine dining at its best. We enjoyed the vegetarian 6-course tasting menu and every morsel was sublime. The food as always didn't disappoint & it was simply ahhhhhmazing.

Finally went to La Mouette on Friday evening for my partner's birthday. What a lovely experience. We decided to do the tasting menu, with wine pairing. What a great choice. Each dish was beautifully played, tasted delicious & the wines were paired really well with each dish. They also brought out a 'happy birthday' plate for him which was a lovely touch. Service is friendly & professional, and the owner (think it was) also came to our table and all other tables for that matter, to check on diners. Nice atmosphere with a toasty fireplace that adds to the ambience. We will definitely go back for a long lunch in the courtyard one day.

La Mouette transports you to a European destination, especially in the summer months when you sit outside in the courtyard by the fountain. But winter is as appealing as we discovered recently when we sat in one of their rooms next to the roaring fire!. Celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary this month, one of our favourite fine dining restaurants in Cape Town is La Mouette in Sea Point. We opted for the 6-course wine paired tasting menu that chef Henry Vigar had put together for the winter months.

My friends and I were recommended this restaurant whilst on holiday through a friend, and what a superb recommendation it was. From the time you enter the restaurant you get a sense of warmth and classic beauty, not to mention the great hospitality. We hadn't reserved a table but were fortunate enough to be squeezed in, but if you do visit I highly recommend reserving a table in advance.

We opted for the taster menu which is selection of food accompanied with various wines to match perfectly with each dish. Each of the dishes were delicious and beautifully presented. Our waiter Terance was amazing, he was not only helpful and funny but patient as he took the time to explain both the dishes and wine in depth, answering all our questions and helped provided a great service. The chef was also a star as he was kind enough to alter some of the set menu for one of my friends who is allergic to coconut. Having to improvise and work off the cuff he done a fabulous job and it was really appreciated.

If you would like a fine dinning experience with great food and great service in a lovely restaurant whilst in Cape Town, I suggest you add this to your list and make it one of your next stops.

Celebrated my birthday with family. We were seated upstairs and I will say, it's definitely not what I expected in terms of decor. I think it was a little dull and dark. A definite old school charm with deliberate modern touches. However, the most important thing is the food, right?
We opted for the a la carte option, and went straight to mains. When I say literally everyone ordered the beef brisket and sirloin, I mean everyone. I never order chicken out but I decided to go against the pack and try the chicken breast. Oh my! What a succulent, tender, flavour filled plate of goodness. It was delicious. I had the broccoli side. I tasted the beef from other plates, it was also delicious but nothing to compare to my choice. I was so chuffed because I'm the queen of food envy. There was no envy in sight. Desert, I had the egg (not sure of the official name). That was delicious! Passion fruit, white chocolate, meringue, roasted peanuts and more. Loved it. My partner had the tiramisu. Meh. It was fine, but I was more engulfed in my own.
Quite a let down that they don't do any special desert for birthdays- I had expected something and got nothing. The hostess/ manager however was quite a delight. Effervescent, bubbly personality, who wished me Happy birthday and my mom too- which was a cute touch. Not sure if I would be back. Perhaps to try the tasting menu?

Absolutely loved our anniversary dinner at La Mouette. The restaurant is beautifully elegant with an intimate fireplace and sophisticated art and decor making it perfect for a special occasion. The staff and manager were a delight and made us feel welcome and comfortable on arrival. We were allocated a cosy spot next to the fireplace and were provided with thorough descriptions of each meal accompanied by the staff's own personal suggestions.
The cheese croquet starter was lovely and crispy on the outside with steaming, melted cheese on the inside. The risotto was perfectly cooked and well-seasoned and the hake was grilled to perfection with various accompanying textures and flavors. The wine exquisitely complemented the dishes adding to the dining experience.
The dessert was by far my favorite. We tried the GnT which is a gin and tonic ice cream and jelly with a lemon sorbet which amalgamated into a unique tasting experience on the palette. I must say that dinner was quite pricy so perhaps a spoil like this would be appropriate once in a while.
Overall, quite a pleasant dining experience.

I've been here on several occasions. The seasonal changes are ambitious and exciting! The dishes are not always completely consistent brilliant but they are always pretty good 🤑 the most intriguing dish I tasted was about two years back with chorizo bits and popcorn 😆

If you're into fine dining, I suggest this beautiful restaurant. From the interior to the service to food, everything was lovely. We ordered food from the spring tasting menu and the meals which stood out for me was the lamb taco starter, the onion broth which came with the tempura onions (the broth was REALLY REALLY good, I wanted an entire bowl of it) and the beef carpaccio main.

You're able to pair wines with the meals but I chose not to.
I would like to come back for the summer tasting menu :)
Chloe
What a treat! I wish I could eat food like this everyday! Such great pairings of textures and flavours. The lamb shank starter was amazing, the chicken main was incredible and the mascarpone ice cream was interesting. I love the simple yet slightly quirky decor and the staff were incredibly friendly. The hostess even gave us a tour of the place at the end. They get five stars for having fireplaces in every room!! Would love to go back in summer and sit outside
Aparajita
The food is good, but not extraordinary. The roast chicken was incredibly tender, the beef sirloin was anonymous and the tuna tartare was excellent. Service is painfully slow.

i dont understand the other reviews my experience was horrible. some courses were inedible. there was no vibe or anything, it felt stuck up like come on the place isnt even expensive so i dont understand the attitudes. the restaurant was pretty enough, but the food, no ways im going back.

We decided that this year we’d have an official Cape Town Foodies year end function and we chose La Mouette as the venue. It’s in busy Sea Point and if you didn’t know about it, you would have probably driven past it many times. But once you go inside you are transported into another era and you almost feel you are sitting somewhere overseas in Europe. Its a large Victorian house but the best part is sitting outdoors in the courtyard on a warm summer’s evening.
TerryCPT
I've had birthdays, Valentine's dates, family dinners and ofc their Supper Club celebrations at this beautiful restaurant. The tri-owner-hosts are lovely brining a great personal touch to the venue and atmosphere. Great food! Chef Henry knows what he's doing. His gastronomy is incredible! A great fine dining spot on the Sea Board, with a romantic courtyard that cannot be beat!

We were tourists in Cape Town and landed at this restaurant based on the reviews and also certain reviews given by some friends. Unfortunately, we were extremely disappointed with the menu, service and the ambience. The restaurant feels extremely dull, almost lifeless!
Further, with a very limited menu, I was toatally surprised to know that certain items on the MAINS were sold out! If total options are 6, I dont expect any item to be sold out! After creating a bit of a fuss, I was told that the chef could create a 'special' for me. I recommended that he choose prawns as the main ingredient. What showed up on my plate was batter fried prawns (tasted terrible!) along with some fish along with several other stuff. The plate was a complete mish mash of assorted food! This was just not expected of such a fine dining restaurant. When I requested to speak with the chef, I was told that he had already left for the day!
The experience did not stop here, I woke up next morning at 5am with a terrible feeling of nausea and threw up my entire dinner and was sick and laid up in bed for the next 24 hours....confined to a hotel room. Just not something that I needed on a holiday.
People I would not recommend the place to anyone. Be careful!
Zack
As always, food and service was excellent. Had the new Autumn tasting menu and by far the best menu I've had in the 3 years I've been going to La Mouette. I could have had a whole bowl of the truffle croquette and gone home happy.
Gustav Holtzhausen
What an incredible find! And after eating at Pot Luck Club, Babel, Harbour House and The Conservatory at Cellars it suggest Tiyaara should considering eating her age... The food was absolutely incredible. Every dish a masterpiece of flavours. It's clear that Chef Henry's love for food and his patrons experiences meet in his wonderful dishes. The only reason we don't rate you a 5 is because your front of house let you down somewhat. The one wine we ordered from your comprehensive wine list was not available but only announced when we ordered it. We were offered a reasonable alternative not on the menu, which should not happen. The soft drinks we ordered were served lukewarm. The fire place died down and only on request an attempt was made to restart it just to die down again without anyone noticing. Your red wine can be chilled more. But WOW, WOW, WOW! We'll definitely be back!!
Sandra Lehmann
Friendly restaurant with great food. We came here looking for a fine dining restaurant in CT and I think the place lived up to its Zomato rating. We didn't do the tasting menu but the food was delicious. The service was also great.
James Mayer
Beautiful food beautiful location. Will most certainly return. We had the summer tasting menu, with the wine, and course by course the wine was paired very well with the food.

Stopped by for dinner. The external facade is very pretty. Indoors, the decor is muted and simplistic - almost dull.

The food is good. I had the gemsbok for the starter and the duck for main. Everything was tasty and fresh - not over-prepared.

The menu changes so what's posted on Zomato probably isn't what you should expect. If it's really important that you know what to expect, maybe email them directly.

Great selection of wines. Obviously, expect Cape Town prices but it still wasn't too bad for the quality of the food.

There isn't much of an ambience so make sure you go with really good company, as I did.
Tiyaarah Cloete
I honestly have no clue what the other reviewers are talking about. Decided to take my boyfriend for his 21st bc the reviews were amazing. We found the place ridiculously dull (that's actually not in the control of the restaurant itself though, rather the people) . Opted for the 6 course tasting menu, bc it looked amazing. We found one of the components of the summer snacks inedible. The soup, salad and Seabass were decent first. The Gruyere cheese dessert was something disgusting. It wasn't a nice experience for me I wouldn't recommend it.
Agatha Thorpe
The tasting menu with wine pairing - what a treat. Fun place for a group of friends or a romantic dinner or special occasion. Worth a visit.
Nick Bizos
We strolled up for a mid week dinner, and thoroughly enjoyed our choices off the a la Carte menu. The service was attentive without being overbearing, the proper outdoor setting a rarity in sea point, and the food delicious.

The cauliflower and couscous salad was the pick of the starters, with the fontina and truffle croquettes following closely behind. For mains, the sea bass cleverly thought out, and the ricotta tortellini was light and sweet with the sweet corn. The sides of spinach and a Parmesan and rocket salad were a delight.

Sadly we didn't try dessert, but will be back soon!
Minouw Coetzee
We went here for a date and tried the tasting menu. It was fabulous. Can recommend it any day. We will definitely be back. Do yourself a favour and go and try it.
Sandy
I love this restaurant.
I went there for my birthday last year and was spoiled with complimentary Steenberg 1682 MCC.
They say you eat with your eyes; well then my eyes were very satisfied! The food is presented beautifully and tastes phenomenal.
I would definitely recommend this restaurant. It is a little pricey, but will definitely visit again on a special occasion :)

I went to La Mouette for my anniversary in 2015 and returned in 2016 for the same reason. A year has passed but the quality of the food, atmosphere and service is still of the highest quality. We were greeted at the door by the friendly hostess who immediately congratulated us and showed us to our table in the picturesque courtyard with a lovely fountain. The entire atmosphere felt very European. We had the tasting menu and course after course did not disappoint. The attention to detail and flavours were superb. The showstopper was the dessert. Such a clever item with a personalized message from the kitchen. All in all a brilliant experience and I would recommend La Mouette to anyone who is looking for a fine dining experience at a reasonable price. A must for a special occasion. We will be back.
Anja Immelman
This was exquisite! A foodie friend recommended this place and it was everything and more. We went for the tasting menu (paired with wine of course) and it was spectacular! Culinary heaven. Every bite is just something else.
I WILL RETURN!
Anthony Wilter
Al fresco dining in the courtyard on a beautiful evening is difficult to beat.
We chose the tasting menu which was superb. The creativity and imagination of the chef was a perfect match for the fresh quality ingredients. While everything was spectacular, highlights of the meal were the vichyssoise with mussels and crispy leeks, the glazed pork belly with turnip carbonara and the duck with cherries and hay smoked beets.

The dessert of deconstructed tiramisu with marscapone ice cream, coffee granita and amaretto gel with ridiculously good.

Service was excellent and complimented the food and ambience of the meal.

This is my favourite restaurant in Cape Town! A conscious menu that always features simple, local, seasonal ingredients that will wow you. Beautifully prepared and thoughtful dishes, served by friendly and professional staff, and affordable a la carte and tasting menus that also accommodate vegetarians -- what more could you wish for? It's a perfect restaurant for a special occasion.

On our latest visit we requested a vegan menu, and we were treated to the most delicious three course dinner prepared specially for us! Such consideration for the individual, and beautiful, delicate flavours. Thank you!
Magda Oosthuysen
Went to this restaurant for dinner. The menu comes with 2 different options - one is the Tasting menu which is a 6 course with or without wine pairing, and the other is a standard A la carte menu. We chose the latter and ordered the Beef fillet and the Lamb Fillet. Both dishes were really great with a special mention of the lamb. So often the authentic lamb taste is lost in the preparation, but in this case it was real lamb taste. The beef fillet was perfectly prepared and came with a side dish of cottage pie in a jar; unique but great taste. The restaurant is situated in an old house with seating space inside and outside. We sat outside and it was great for summer weather. Overall great restaurant and I will come back.

The tasting menu is great value for money and is absolutely delicious. The staff were extremely attentive and friendly throughout the evening.
Nitus
Wonderful service and attention to detail. After advising that I could not have any gluten and having the tasting menu I was still given plenty of options and surprised with a special desert prepared especially for me. Highly recommended!
Duane
We had the tasting menu for our one year anniversary, food was great, pricey but it's one of those places where you get what you pay for and I was happy with paying it. Service was good and I enjoy the setting, the only downside is that parking\
The Foodie Corner
Stunning food and stunning wine - La Mouette definitely does not disappoint! From the busy street outside, the restaurant itself doesn't look like much, but once greeted by the friendly staff you come to realize why this restaurant has gotten such good reviews.

We opted for the 6 course tasting menu, which, with wine pairing, is priced at R645 per person (R395 without wine). For the quality of food and wine, that has got to be one of the most reasonably priced tasting menus in Cape Town!

We started off with homemade bread - pumpkin seed loaf, cheese stick and sourdough, accompanied by both normal and smoked butter. The bread was devine, but what really made me happy was that the butter was served at room temperature, so it wasn't as if you were cutting into an ice block and trying to plaster it onto your bread!

The summer snacks came first, paired with Steenburg Brut - a perfect combination and one of the best bruts I've ever tasted! The beetroot ravioli, tempura onion and linefish all went down very well. The next two courses were a sort of deconstructed mussel soup and a confit of tomatoes. Both dishes were beautifully presented and perfectly paired with two white wines.

The evening moved on to what could probably be considered the "mains" for the night. For these two courses, we had 3 options from which to pick. First up was the tuna carpaccio and glazed pork belly. By far the pork belly was my favorite dish of the night - I'll definitely go back just for that! The carpaccio was a delicious second and came with a wonderful sauce. Next, we had the roasted linefish (sea bass) and the duck. The linefish was perfectly cooked and the host of accompaniments matched perfectly with it. The duck was also heaven on a plate - I loved the crispy duck leg and the glazed cherries!

To end off, we had the tiramisu, which was light and refreshing - not too rich and not too sweet so as to leave you feeling stuffed.

Overall, I left feeling satisfied but not stuffed to the brim as you usually do after such an extensive tasting. The portion sizes were perfect, the service was quick and friendly, the menu was well priced and the atmosphere is welcoming and cozy. The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars is because I feel there was just that little something missing from the food. But it was still devine and I thoroughly enjoyed the evening! It's any foodie's dream!

Top tips: The tasting menu with wine pairing is definitely recommended! If you opt for the a la carte option, I would recommend pairing your food with the suggested wines - it's definitely worth it! If you dine here in the summer and you want to sit outside, come early - it fills up very quickly!

I had heard a lot about La Mouette before my visit, even the manager of another CT restaurant named it as 'the most underrated restaurant in CT' - so I was really excited for the time to have finally arrived. The restaurant has a nice feel to it, we were seated inside which is an old colonial-style house that they have converted. The service, ambience and menu all have the feel of a very upmarket and posh restaurant which only made me more excited for the experience ahead of me. My partner and I opted for the tasting menu paired with wine and unfortunately, neither one of us were blown away. We chose different options for each of the mean courses (where you had a choice between dishes) and e both agreed that, although technically quite good, they were all just a little unpolished and left us walking away wanting more. Perhaps the Ala Carte menu is the way to go.
Dino
We tried the tasting menu at La Mouette, our first time at the restaurant after hearing many good things about the restaurant, we were very excited and looking forward to it. We found the food very good, just not quite at the level we were hoping or expecting, and overall I found that whilst the dishes sounded great on paper, a few dishes missed the mark and lacked the flavour to really make them memorable. Of the 6 courses we found the first three "starter" or lighter courses to be a bit bland, the meaty mains were better and the dessert (deconstructed tiramisu) was our favourite course.
My biggest criticism would be with the wine pairing which I found strange, to pair Pinot noir with tuna is, in my opinion, slightly weird. None of the wines tasted were that interesting or exceptional, to our taste of course.
Overall the food is good and we will probably go back but I wouldn't try the tasting menu again as I think I would have enjoyed 3 courses of my choice better than the 6 courses on the tasting menu.
Christine Du Toit
We had the summer tasting menu. With the options we both had the tuna carpaccio. Pieter had the duck and I the line fish which was seabass. For dessert I had the tiramisu and Pieter the chocolate berry. Even though the chocalate berry was not on the tasting menu, they substituted. The venue is beautiful and sitting outside next to the fountain was very nice. They also have a good selection of wine. The service is excellent and the bread on arrival is also good. As can be seen from the photos the presentation of the food is very good and the portion size is just right to enjoy the 6 course. I highly recommend that you try this restaurant and will surely return. The food is excellent.

One of my favourite places to dine in Cape Town. Beautiful setting in an old Tudor-style house with wooden floors. The staff and front of house are so friendly and welcoming, always making sure you're enjoying your meal. The food is divine! I've only ever eaten off of the a la carte menu. The dishes change constantly so there always new and exciting choices. La Mouette serves fantastic food at brilliant prices - a must visit. They also go the extra mile for birthdays or anniversaries.
Cookie Monster
I loved it the style of the building was beautiful takes me back to a medieval state of mind on entering I was swarmed with a vibe that made me feel oozy and loved hahaha so weird to say but let's get in to food if your a foodie and your pocket says we ain't got no more then this is the place I was showered with a six coarse winter menu for 280 come one hhahah food simple maybe a bit to simple but tasty and effort was put in and little secrete anything with truffle for me is like a gold trophy love the taste and the aroma many styles going on I got French Asian classic cookery and it worked go if you interested heheheh

Simply put: affordable fine dining. La Mouette creates art on your plate. The food is visually pleasing and most importantly: delicious and the staff is friendly. Given the quality, it's amazing how affordable it is compared to other restaurants of a comparable standard. Easy top 20 in the city. At a canter

A Cape Town success. Food sublime, staff attentive without being too "Capey" an adult time in an interesting historic setting. We had dinner there with the wine pairings, all carefully considered and explained without fanfare and unlike some restaurants the customers were not treated well
Just one of the best tasting menus in Cape Town
Superb service food exquisite wine menu great
And one can get a table at short notice
All around great restaurant

The review is a little late - but the evening was an absolute pleasure! We visited at the end of July for the winter special menu and weren't disappointed! I think this restaurant is a gem in sea point that is often overlooked by the 'award crowd'. The food is inventive, exciting and tasty. Each course is served with enthusiasm and professionalism and looks a treat! I enjoy going back time and again.

This place is a celebration of life. Every one of the 6 courses was a master piece, purposefully crafted to perfection.

A master chef experience with a great ambience.

I'm really looking forward to the next visit.
Allan Moita
What a great restaurant! It's perhaps not the type of place you would go to weekly but it's definitely worth going now and then.

The food was amazing. The starters were really outstanding. They were actually the highlight. I think the next time I go, I may actually just have a selection of starters.

The wine list and the service were exceptional too.
Tim Hulme
We had a great meal at La Mouette on our last trip to Cape Town. It came highly recommended, and lived up to the expectations.

The waiter and owner were very accommodating, friendly and professional. The waiter gave us great detail on each dish, and easily answered all our questions.

Beautiful presentation on all the dishes.

Everything felt cozy and warm, but with a fine dining air. The atmosphere is added to by the old house the restaurant is set in.

Fine dining but without even a hint of pretentiousness. Very very good.
Michael Lewis
Excellent meal. One of the best I've ever had. Enjoyed the early spring tasting menu. I think it was six courses all paired with wine and a desert course.

Ambience is cozy with a roaring fire. Staff are superb. Very attentive but not doting. The highlight of the meal for me was the snack course. 4 little bites. My favorite was the fried leaf with beets. Exquisite.

Can rival any of the best restaurants in EU or the US.
Spruceblog
This was the most amazing surprise for a first time visit, and is probably one of the best restaurants I have been to in a VERY long time. The venue is understated yet stylish and the food is out of this world! Think French fusion with a twist; exquisitely presented with every bite leaving you wanting more. Our waitress was the only thing that was a bit off on the night, and hence why I am not giving a full 5/5. Would highly recommend a visit!

Location was central. Welcome by staff was friendly and the interior layout is simple yet warm at the same time.

Food was interesting in flavor and the combination of components on each plate worked beautifully together. Great wine selection as well.

Ambience and service was excellent.

This is a great fine dining institution in Seapoint.

The decor is minimalistic. The dining area is divided up into rooms, giving it a cosy feel. Each room has its own fireplace, which was great on the chilly night we were there.

The service was attentive. There is an option for a 6 course set menu or ala carte ,menu, both which can be paired with wine.

The food was delicious and presented well.

Well worth a visit when in Cape Town.

I have no words! How did I not know about this place? We had the six course menu and it was absolutely incredible! The service is great and I will take everyone I know there. Multiple foodgasms :)
Claudia
I'm giving them a 5, 'cause there's no 10. No words. 😱 As serious foodies & winies, we were absolutely overwhelmed by what were put in front of is, and even more by what we put in our mouths.
