Review The Lawns - Camps Bay

This place is the place to be this some the wonderful environment and the stunning view of the mountains is breathtaking. I love the setup and the layout. The food and service is amazing would highly recommend this place especially over the festive season parking is a bit limited. The the staff is amazing and the food is delicious. Place of highly quality will definitely be back.

Come here for the atmosphere … perfect spot for sunset just make sure you have a reservation because not every spot in the place has a great view. Food is decent, service is okay. Worth a visit with friends for a casual night and sunset

Beautiful setting any time of day with lovely views and really delicious food. Note that because this place attracts quite a few tourists, the prices are a bit steep. The staff are very friendly and the service they provide is excellent (kudos to them for running up and down all the many stairs all evening!) The food itself was delicious. I’d recommend the fish and chips, the serving size is enough to feed two!

I was really impressed with everything at The Lawns. The food was great. My personal favorites were the “pork belly burnt ends” and the “bruschetta.” (With a twist, it also included zucchini, peppers, and olives. Very tasty.) The drinks were great (I got the margarita, and my partner got a virgin mojito.) And the view… unbeatable. But I have to give special props to the service. When we first showed up, we didn’t have a reservation. We didn’t know if they could seat us, but they found some place. It was clear they were a little understaffed, and because of that it took a little while before we could place our order, so we were worried how the service would be. But this team was RUNNING it. Truly, sometimes running from table to table to deliver food and orders. Full on shout out to whoever was working on October 19th. They were on top of everything. It was a really wonderful meal.

The place is amazing and well positioned. We came for dinner, as a group of 14+ people. The waiter managed to take our order pretty well. Given that the restaurant serves a three course menu. We just needed to get the main deal, which was food of course. There's sea food, meat, pizza, etc. Then there is the platter for two, which I don't think needs to be there (except for branch). The idea of serving food all at once for a group of people is great idea, well done to the restaurant on that. Great service!! Waiter managed to ensure that food was delivered to everyone. There were two interesting moments, two unknown oderes being brought to the table after received their order. I hope those were not included on the bill.

Great place to lounge and eat good food. Dogs are all off leash and tons of kids. Service is good. Parking is ok. Views are amazing.

If you’re looking to watch the sunset, in a beautiful venue, with amazing food and service, then The Lawns is the place for you. It’s casual. It’s a gem…

I love the atmosphere. Very cozy and beautiful place. The services are great, with delicious foods and drinks. On the weekends they are busy like other places, just be patient a bit. Enjoy the view, the drink 🍸 and the atmosphere.

The Lawns is one of the best outdoor, summer venues in Cape Town. (i.e., Wear sunscreen unless you pitch up after dark.) The views of Table Mountain, the Twelve Appostles, and Camps Bay are unbeatable. The staff are welcoming and friendly, and most of the food is very good, too. There isn't a great deal of parking. Certainly there is not enough if the restaurant is at capacity, so consider an uber. On the food side, our dishes were good, except for the fact that the constant wind meant everything was teppid by the time it reached the table and cold shortly thereafter. Unfortnately, we were properly underwhelmed by the Korean Chicken Burger.

The views are really something to behold! Situated well on the side of Lion’s head mountain you can get a great view of the ocean as well as a good deal of the 12 Apostles. The place is certainly more geared toward drinking, with an outside seating area being the vast majority of the restaurant. The service was good, with attentive waiters and runners. The waiter also made special arrangements for us when they didn’t have that sauce we wanted. As for the food, I shared a burger and a pizza. The burger was great, but they Margarita pizza was highly disappointing. No tomato base, the cheese was thin and there was no basil as promised by the menu. If the pizza was better it would have gotten 5 stars. Also note the road is pretty rough and I had to take it quite carefully in my relatively low car.

After many phone calls to the restaurant to plan a 60th birthday lunch for my husband - including 3 vegan meals, on the balcony with a view - all of which was confirmed on email to me. We arrived to be seated at the back of a marquee with no views and no vegan meals. The food we did have was disgusting. I emailed the restaurant but no response. I eventually phoned only to get a sorry but we've been busy. This is not acceptable. My husbands 60th was ruined. We had ubered to the restaurant from Constantia Glen. There was no option at 2pm on his actual birthday to make other plans. They obviously don't care as they know I am not a local but really this is shocking service.

A great spot for Sunday breakfast - however, some extra attention to detail would go a long way. Staff generally very attentive and well trained, menu sufficient but food could be better! Also, there needs to be parking spaces reserved for differently-abled /elderly people that are close to the venue.

This was our first visit to the Lawns at the Roundhouse and it's unlikely we will return. The food was quite expensive and at best mediocre. My companion had the Nachos Chicken Burger which was acceptable. I had the Pizza Bianco which was very dry with very little fig and gorgonzola. I felt it was overpriced. Another in our party asked for fish and chips but was brought salad instead of chips. When he asked for chips instead of salad he was told to leave the salad on the side and was provided with a side portion of chips. Poor show.

Shadrack our waiter was great as we were a big party and somehow he kept track of our orders. However even though we were a big party (17 pax) we were only allocated 2 tables and had to ask several times for another table to be brought.

The main bugbear was the lack of hygiene. The waiters' trays were filthy, and I found a number of cigarette butts between the table slats - I think even a smoker would be grossed out. The bins in the toilets were overflowing. At these prices I'm sure they could afford to employ a cleaner to regularly service the toilets and cleaning solution to keep trays hygienic.

A really lovely dining experience and really worth the cash you pay. I had the 4-Course set menu and was shockingly surprised by how affordable it was (R395), especially because the portions are good. I would recommend coming here during the day because the position of the restaurant gives you a really great view, but it’s also amazing for a lovely date night or big-group dinner. Impeccable service and lovely food. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Tucked away in a forested corner well below signal hill's intersection on Kloof nek, it's easy to miss the turn off but the excitement of arriving and watching this space unfold makes the blood flow increase 😁🤓

The venue's ocean views are absolutely incredible, especially with a glass of bubbly 🥂 (always support local 😉🇿🇦, most are underrated but delicious and easy on the pocket)... pair that with any of their fresh salads; they let us mix and match ingredients with ease 🥑🥒 ask and they will be accommodating where possible

The waiters are very friendly, the ambience is very much like an outdoor picnic (their cutlery is neatly stored in small wicker baskets for you to help yourself to).

*TIP: arrive as early as you can, and don't be shy to stay for much longer to watch the incredible burnt orange and pink sunset over the Atlantic Ocean... great for a soirée of friends or a romantic midday date... have fun with your style on the visit, look easy in linens, stripes, whites, creams, sunglasses, a hat and bring some SPF 30+

To be safe Reserve in advance ☎️

i think this was my 3rd visit to The Roundhouse and i've loved it everytime! Great place if you're with a big group of people. the pizza is great as well as the chicken! Awesome views and lovely vibes overall. Top choice for the summer :)

while the food was spectacular I was very disappointed with the service ww received. Being a young couple that enjoys dining out we are used to getting the eyeball at fancy restaurants. When it came time to pay the bill was presented with a flier advertising and event and a snapscan code we asked if we could pay with snapscan not once but 3 times it was confirmed by our waitress every time yes we paid. Then the waitress recanted snd said no we needed to pay cash or with a credit card after we had paid. We were made to feel like we hadnt paid and the manager frog matched to our table to argue with us jumping to the waitresses defense. This was a terrible experience. We had infact paid in full with a generous tip to the snapscan company.

I was fortunate enough to experience this place as part of my work so I did not have to pay a cent that day. The pizza's that I sampled had a very sweet tomato sauce which I am not a fan of but many of the people there were in love and one middle-aged lady even said that it was the best pizza she had ever had in her life! The chicken was slightly dry but it was understandable given that they had to cook about 10 of them for this event. The tapas was great and the bread available was nice enough. The service was exceptional and the staff operated like a well-oiled machine

What a romantic & tranquil picnic style setting, this is a beautiful quiet spot to hide out and sip on a whole bottle of wine (I totally did that) and oh what a view! Dunno if it was the wine but boy that view was glowing...

Arriving here, everything started off so good! The weather was perfect and we didn't have a booking but they managed to accommodate us anyway. Our waiter was friendly, knowledgeable of the menu and even went as far as to borrow us his portal charger.

Tapas are delicious, however they could have some more variety with the bread that you select with it as there's only ciabatta. They have an amazing sundowner special, where you receive 2x pizzas and 2x bottle of wine for R330!! The pizza was delicious, nice thin base however they could be more generous with the toppings.

Once we received the bill, everything went downhill from there. We had asked for some chilli and garlic with our pizza, only to see that they were each charged at R10!! When bringing it up with the waiter as to why it wasn't mentioned that there would be an extra charge (also, really? Who charges for this?), he replied in a very condescending way "this isn't a primi". To top it all off, we had asked for a takeaway for our pizza, we had settled the bill and it still hadn't been brought back. Once again we asked the waiter where our takeaway was, only to be argued with that we didn't say we wanted a takeaway so it's gone! I couldn't believe how the whole day just turned around like that!!

We complained to the manager and received a complimentary pizza for the inconvenience. It really was a pity that it all had to end off so bad as everything was delicious!

Started our cape town holiday with a lunch here. We Sat in the gardens enjoyed the view, a cold beer and a pickled fish salad. All of it was wonderful. Our boys could explore and mission around and then maxed out on the delicious pizza. Almost perfect.

Spent a lovely Saturday evening at the Rumbullion a few weeks ago. Great service and food. Pizzas are awesome, especially the Bianca with gorgonzola and figs. View is really beautiful, but we were disappointed that they set the tables on the lower level so we couldn't see it from our table. Also, they ushered us out much earlier than expected which they didn't warn us about.

Beyond epic. Amazing view. Amazing fresh food and the best staff I have experienced in awhile. The salad, bread and chips were phenomenal. I was so full by then, so when they presented the table with a chicken I thought I would give it a skip, but nope I become a fat piggy. Does become a parents nest with breeders everywhere. But worth every cent.

Absolutely exquisite food, setting and plating. It is on the expensive side but well worth the wait. My hubby and I booked a few months in advance and really enjoyed this 300 year old institution- Recommend for a very special occasion. 👌🏻

Wowzer!! What an amazing place! The wine and food pairing was amazing and the service was fantastic. The blueberry soufflé with buffalo milk sorbet is to die for (would pay R400 just for that!!) I will be back soon -love this place!

I'm seriously on the fence about this one.

We were running late and they are very specific about letting them know and that if you're more than 20mins late they cannot guarantee your table.

I probably phoned about 5 times and each time the phone went to voicemail. Hmmm...

We get there and as they lead us to our table i notice there are only 4 tables occupied.

I loved the fact that they personalise your menu but the waiter half grabs it away once you ordered and doesn't ask whether you want to keep it. I mean you are just going to get rid of it aren't you?

We received our bread and just as i picked up a piece, canapes came. Put my bread down and eat my canapes. Barely swallowed my last canape when the 1st course arrived. Sorry bread... You're gonna have to wait yet again.

Wine comes already poured to the table which is personally a no no for both my husband and I, and there's so little in the glass. Yeah sure its a tasting but at R300pp just for the wines?😳 i dont think the glasses were even a quarter full and in some instances one had more than the other. Or should i say one had less? 🙃

Food was bland and at one point i actually wanted to ask for some salt.

We were a bit confused about some of the wine pairings. Sweet with sweet. Really dry with meaty.

And then the fact that the waiter just opens a new bottle of water without asking? Seriously?!

Don't even attempt to ask anything about the food on your plate. They put your plate down and are gone so fast afterwards that you haven't even finished saying thank you.

Yeah - this experience is one for the history books to be forgotten and never to be repeated...

Oh and in case you're wondering - i eventually got to finish my bread.
In general I would not visit this restaurant again and I would advise friends against it. As far as I could tell there was a lot of snobbery and not much quality. My biggest complaint is that they seemed to be trying to grab as much money as they could from diners without really delivering value for that. For instance they charged a huge amount for the still water which was clearly bottled on site and not bought and didn't appear to be particularly spectacular in terms of quality. And for each person they charged for a whole bottle when clearly we did not drink that much water. That just seems greedy.
Some of the food was really good good but the mains were nothing special. Quite frankly I've had better sirloin in the local pub of an out -of-the-way village.
Also, the toilet was outside and our table was right next to the door. For that price you'd think we wouldn't have gusts of wind through out the meal.
On a good note the ambiance was very nice indeed, the setting was beautiful and they did warm the place well. However, on balance I wouldn't recommend this restaurant.

The Bistronomy menu is great - especially if you go for the wine pairing option. We loved that there was a completely vegetarian version; it's rare to find fine dining for veggies in the city beyond the usual places. Definitely for a special occasion.
Mark Coumbes
Nice atmosphere, lovely wine list, though long and bit complicated with no description of the wine. Of course the sommelier choose to present wines over r1,000, we choose a nice Merlot for r450. 6 course menu was ok, not exceptional (lots of various combinations of taste on each plate). Would have preferred an a la carte menu. Servers seem to find it difficult to field questions of menu and very quickly describe food before scurry away.
Claude Hanan
Great setting but consistently poor food. Poor quality, bad flavours. Way over priced. R104 for CT's most avg burger. R34 for a bottle of beer
Adrian Kaplan
Yes the setting is magnificent and we had a couple of drinks and coffees outside on the loungers. But wow the service is shocking! No sugar arrives with the coffees and more we ask for it the more canderel we receive! Nobody checked on us and it took forever to get our bill. Imagine how disasterous it could have been if we actually had a meal! Train your staff...unimpressed! Cappuccino i had was good - I'll give them that!
Scot Cooper
Nice view for lunch sitting outside. But so rudely overpriced. R48 for a rock shandy? What a cheek to charge that for lemonade and soda, & a quarter of it being ice. And the burger was good, but not exceptional for R110. But even if it was... Come on! And the waiters need to be more attentive. A couple of times we had to go find ours. I can't speak for the inside fine dining restaurant, but this long standing establishment needs to spice things up a bit with regards to what I've mentioned. So I'm not surprised that its overall rating is not as high as it should be.

After sitting in the traffic to get to the venue, we were pointed away as the venue had been fully booked. The lady handling the list did not seem to know what she was doing plus, there were probably 5 tables taken and the rest all vacant, we were planning on being there an hour max. Please do not advertise you take walk ins if you don't the mere fact that she couldn't help the 2 of us put me off. When we asked if we could have a table nearby that seemed excluded from the venue under trees she replied "you can sit, but the owners will be here soon" Just not cool.
Zakiah Ray
Great concept and a great venue but unfortunately it's wasted by the friendly, yet unskilled waitrons. The pizza I shared with my boyfriend was average at best and I'm sure the white chocolate mousse is delicious, however we didn't get to try to as there was no stock left at 3pm.... fix your orders and train your waitrons. Your restaurant is not doomed, there is room for improvement, please take this feedback as constructive. I'll be back.

Had a gorgeous year end picnic here today. Food took extremely slow to come out but the vibe was happening so didnt really notice. My suggestion would be for the ladies not to wear heels as its quite steep and uphill. Food is okay. Location is beautiful.

Walk through that green door and get taken back into history with lovely finishes and a warm welcome from front of house that were very attentive our evening starte of to a grand start with our meals coming prompt and quick but one thing bothered me was the food knowledge or maybe the understanding of the foo did not get relayed to the table properly some food lacked flavor and other were bursting with the need of a little less salt all in all the tasting menu for winter was a lovely experience
Magda Oosthuysen
This was an amazing experience! The good was outstanding, the wines paired with each dish perfectly and the service could not be better. Their soufflés are legendary and it should not be missed. The views are usually stunning but tonight there was a monster storm so we missed out in the views. The venue itself deserves an upgrade, it's old and worn, especially considering the location and the quality of its food.

The view here is amazing. They do a great pizza special and is perfect for a summers day out with friends. The service is wonderful and food is very tasty. The big rolling laws also serve as a great spot to relax and nice and friendly for children. A good spot for a date or big party of friends. Highly recommend it!

A regal aroma fills the air as one steps into the designated rooms for dinner. A set menu replenishes the hungry mouths of those excited to embark on the Roundhouse cuisine. Each course is made to perfection and the staff truly excel to make each customer feel comfortable and at ease. A beautiful place to celebrate an evening with friends or family.

The menu is divided into sections, including ‘vegetarian’, ‘traditional South African’ and ‘comfort food’. We placed our orders and started with soft home made potato and sundried tomato rolls with butter and enjoyed the view. Luke ordered the creamy white wine mussels with garlic toasts, and I had the potato and coriander samosas with fruit chutney. His mussels were exactly what the menu promised, moreish and perfect for early winter days. He may or may not have asked for more bread to mop up the sauces. And then sipped it from the bowl.

I was served a bowl piled with fresh, light, crispy samosas – a smooth, spicy filling and sweet chutney, I motored through them, one crunchy mouthful at a time. We finished our dishes, when the waiter asked what we’d be having next. Apparently the standard is 3-4 dishes per person, but after our one dish each, we knew we would only just be able to finish dessert.

Should my stomach have allowed, we were eying the Bokaap vegetable bootie and the smoked pork belly with tiger prawns and leeks. Perhaps another time.

Dessert was a perfectly wintery malva pudding with Amarula anglaise for me, and a gorgeous cheese platter for the Mr. We took a little breather between courses, sipped some more bubbly as we watched the mist roll in across the bay. Dessert arrived, I instantly soaked my pudding in the Amarula anglaise and savoured the sweet, sticky malva. An interesting element on the cheese platter was a fig and wholegrain mustard chutney – the Mr was tempted to ask the kitchen for the recipe.
Today we enjoyed the latest special at Roundhouse - the Rumbullion menu has been taken inside for Winter (until 30 Sept 2015) so you can still enjoy the breathtaking views whilst staying warm and dry indoors. The service was superb - Robson was attentive, charming and very well acquainted with the menu - that is served tapas style, which is divine as you get to share and enjoy as many of the dishes as you'd like. All the dishes were beautifully presented and tasted delicious, perfectly seasoned and executed. Take your pick of the menu and I'm sure you won't be disappointed - our favourites were the Karoo lamb pie & Cape Malay chicken curry with sides of teamed garden greens and basmati rice, the potato and coriander samosas are a must to try too...not to mention the malva pudding with Amarula sauce!

Firstly the deco is so dull ,could be so much better with just a lick of paint as the restaurant was well heated for a chilly day staff very attentive
Wine prices crazy food very average and really how can you put broccoli in a vegetable breyani not a very stable veggie at the best of times
Sianmckb
Beautiful, dainty setting to have a chilled glass of wine and tasty pizza for a long chat and a laugh! Great service. I have absolutely loved each waiter I have had; They are full of charisma and good manners. Food takes exceptionally quick to come out even though I wouldn't mind waiting a while in their lush garden.

What a great restaurant. Expensive as all hell but the food is amazing. Really nice touches such as putting your name on the menu and addressing you in person. the salmon and tuna were perfectly done and the taste of thw lamb shoulder was great. The pork was a bit under cooked but the pork belly was very good. Only issue was a piece of radish that smelt amd tasted like drain water. Other than that the meal was perfect. Dessert was the best! The view outside was amazing and the service superb. Overall loved it and will be back! Hopefully after an increase :)

Have had some great meals at the Roundhouse before, but trying to book this time was a nightmare. Reservation was confirmed off their website booking form via email and sms. Then I received a separate email telling me I needed to fork out my credit card details in advance and I'd be charged if anyone in my party didn't pitch up; otherwise no booking. Then I got more emails confirming my reservation and asking me to reconfirm I was coming. Then I got more emails telling me to provide credit card details in advance again. No response to my email querying the situation. Phone only answered on the eighth time I called.

So. Disorganised and the experience was, if you'll excuse the pun, distasteful. (Happily other restaurants in CT have accommodated me at short notice, but I suspect my last visit to the Roundhouse may remain just that - the last one.)

So to the Rouundhouse: I really don't like your pre-meal credit card policy, and it has now definitely lost you business. I suspect it may do the same for others, which no doubt weighs against the frustration of guests not pitching. But your business and therefore your shout. I'll vote with my feet.

Was here early December 2014 on a warm windless afternoon. We sat outside ..

Very friendly staff .. good food .. Really had a good time .. Although I did not pay I think they are expensive.

Advisable to book before as they were quite busy on the day.

Beverley Wynne and I went here for my birthday. It's brilliant. Great food and amazing service. Beautiful Location too. Expensive but worth it.

The Roundhouse was an absolute experience. I felt like we were arriving at our very own mansion with our staff waiting to great us. A cute touch is your name included on the menu. We had a 4 course with canopy before course 1 - delicious of course. The food was incredible - selection is great - the wine was incredible and as I said, the staff felt like family. It is on the pricey side but as a spoil, totally worth it.
My first experience of fine dining were at the Roundhouse! What fond memories! It was storming outside like Cape Town can and must say the drive down bit scary, but then you get to this restaurant which doesn't seem like much but everything was just fantastic.

The fireplace contributed to the experience and the food was amazing! The menu changed since I went, but I remember I had the best prawns and softest steak! And they had great wine selections! It is expensive like al fine dining restaurants will be, but worth the visit.

This is actually on my wish-list to go dine at again with my hubby. They have a winter special now, so might be able to squeeze this in...
