Review Eastern Corner - Bryanston

Michael Gill
My family and I have been eating in or out (Takeways) at Eastern Corner for the last 8 years and we've never been disappointed, food is affordable, well prepared and delicious. Staff is always friendly and efficient. The perfect Chinese restaurant, best in Johannesburg in our opinion.

Always an excellent choice. I have ordered sushi from Eastern Corner for several years and have never been disappointed. Generous portions, the salmon is always fresh and delicious, and the price is very competitive. Pick-up is very easy as well, Steve's service on WhatsApp is also a great addition, ensuring accurate ordering and readiness.

Can't go wrong with the miso soup, rainbow California roll, and salmon sashimi!

My fiancé ordered the crispy beef and I the Kung Pao tofu - where do I start? He basically said it’s the worst crispy beef he has ever had in his entire life and that certainly doesn’t even taste like crispy beef, the fried rice is so soggy, and the tofu is horribly done. Tasteless and soggy food. For almost R200, I really do regret spending that money. Money wasted

Ordered the crispy beef after reading reviews... biggest mistake... it was tasteless and mushy...ordered the fried rice as an extra and it was even worse, it was not even close to fried rice :( the whole meal is not edible!!! No salt no nothing!!!

My family threw me a fantastic 60th birthday party here on Sunday afternoon. There were 15 of us and the food was absolutely superb. The food, which was served in large bowls and platters for everyone at the table to share was freshly made and sizzling and crispy as described on the menu. Plates and cutlery were quickly removed and replaced, glasses topped up, water and ice kept coming and every little need was swiftly and efficiently attended to.

I have never had such delicious vegetable spring rolls anywhere. The filling was fresh and crisp and not a drop of oozy oil anywhere. We all shared sizzling beef - soft, tender and delicious, cashew chicken - the cashews were plump and sweet and the chicken velvety and crispy duck, which everyone declared to be the best they'd ever tasted. I'm not fond of duck and I have to say that I loved it too.

The best part of the entire day was the fact that my daughters were able to go completely over the top with decorating the table and taking over every nook and cranny for cake, champagne in ice buckets, gifts, wrapping paper and heaven knows what else.

The new owners, Denike and Steve and their manager Kevin (Qim), are the most delightful and friendly people and they hovered around making sure that everything was perfect, despite the fact that Steve and Denike had been at their own son's wedding until 2 o'clock in the morning - congratulations!

A wonderful experience in a delightful venue and you can be sure that I will be back over and over again to work my way through the rest of the menu. Thank you for my wonderful day.

Been going here for years. Great value and good quality take always. Try the mapo bean curd, prawns with spicy salt and pepper and the sushi is proper🤘🏻

Eastern Corner is right down the road from my place but I have yet to try it until now. We opted for a quick takeaway and when we went to collect our order the restaurant looked like quite a nice and cosy little spot. We ordered one sushi dish and one crispy beef from the hot meals. The sushi was good and made with generous amounts of salmon which is always a plus :) The crispy beef was really delicious and definitely one of the best Chinese takeaway meals in the area. The owner is also very friendly and I look forward to coming back.

Eastern Corner is quite a decent Chinese restaurant hidden in the corner of the Posthouse centre. It's fit more for take aways than sit down meals, and has the usual variety of Chinese and Japanese dishes available. They're also really decently priced, it's just a pity they don't have weekly sushi specials or else we'd pop in for work lunches more often.

I had the beef udon which was quite tasty, but much too salty. My friend ordered the crispy beef which was made really well, not too sweet and quite flavourful. We'll definitely be back to try more of the menu in future.

*Update*

We came back here for lunch this past week and decided to sit down. I must say I much prefer just doing take away, and I wasn't very impressed with the Nabeyaki Udon I ordered. The broth was too salty, the chicken was weird and rubbery and the egg was inedible. There were practically no veggies and it came in a dirty bowl. My friend had a better experience with her Kung Pao Prawn dish, but we were a bit surprised that it didn't come with rice or noodles. So I think stick to the basics at this restaurant, and do take aways as its not the nicest place to sit down and eat.

Very small but really clean and had a super meal here. Ate sushi and Chinese and the sushi was exceptional. Really great for a quick meal in the week and will definitely come back

A little gem tucked away in Bryanston. Every time I go there, I order the crispy beef and it is has become one of my favorite dishes along with the crab and cheese spring rolls I have to start. Lacks in atmosphere, a little crude and slow service but extremely cheap and incredible food.

The best Casual Chinese spot. Sushi is also divine. The price is a real pleasure. Just make sure you pay the waitresses tip in cash. Apparently the owner doesn't give them it if it's on a credit card 🙈

Great Chinese food in a very basic, yet clean dive!! We find the Chinese food in this very basic place better than many other , pricier Chinese restaurants. It is consistently good. The service is fast and friendly. We have been a few times and usually have the Miso soup (good), Chicken & Veg spring rolls (crispy, fresh and tasty), salt & pepper pork chops (crispy and tasty), the spicy fried calamari (fresh and good, with bits of chili chopped in) and the crispy fried beef - tasty and crispy but not overcooked, like many others do! The Udon Veg noodle stir fry is good, as are the other Noodle stir fry dishes (just a little confusing to order the correct one, you need to point at the picture!)The pricing is reasonable, and the winelist - basic. We return when we are in the mood for tasty and consistently good Chinese food

Tucked away in the Post House shopping Centre, Eastern Corner is fast becoming a firm Bryanston hidden gem.

The Chinese menu is replete with many favorites however there are a few that are must haves.

The vegetarian spring rolls (R21) nostalgic of what Chinese spring rolls are, deep fried goodness.

Choosing mains is difficult as the menu is broad with many options tasty as the next.

The General Tso' Chicken (R49); crispy, sticky chicken that is undeniably finger licking good is worthwhile trying. The Sweet and Sour Pork (R 42) and crunchy Crispy Beef (R 52) are delicious.

Each of the protein mains comes with rice, replace this with their yumsh egg fried rice. It will only enhance your meal.

What I like so much is that it's cheap, cheerful and bountiful. Can't ask for more when getting Chinese takeaways on a Sunday evening.

You have to ignore the decor, it looks like a dive but the food is incredible. If you like spicy this is the place, try the salt and pepper pork chops, the dumplings are also great but do take a bit of time. Hot and sour soup to start will stir your taste buds Fantastic for a quick lunch or dinner, quality and good value for money

What this place lacks in atmosphere it makes up for in sushi deliciousness. Some of the tastiest sushi around. I'd highly recommend it as a takeaway spot.

If you're looking for quality well priced, affordable sushi you have to try Eastern corner. A firm favorite of mine and friends from work for Friday take away. Yes, it does lack in table setting and interior decor but don't let this put you off. The sushi is always fresh and delicious. Never disappointing. Try the salmon platter. It's awesome.

This restaurant is becoming a firm favorite. Why travel to Cyrildene when you can have some of the best Chinese food in Bryanston? We often travel to China on business and their food is comparable with some of the best restaurants we've been to in Guangzhou, Shanghai, Hangzhou and Beijing. Prices are good, service a bit slow and the ambience pretty basic. But the owner is sweet and the food is very morish. Highly recommended.

This is my go-to sushi spot! Although atmosphere is seriously lacking, the food (and especially sushi) is so well priced and absolute quality. Bear in mind the sushi take away orders may take a little while, it is definitely worth it. The meals are also really great, without all the oil you usually find with Asian cuisine. The owners are really friendly and make sure your meal is prepared with attention and care.

Eastern Corner was recommended to me by a colleague and although, skeptical at first... I have found this to be a hidden gem for healthy, tasty, and very reasonably priced meals. What they lack in decor and ambience, they make up for with their incredibly generous portions, freshly prepared food and service-with-a-smile. A lovely place for a quick bite to eat or takeaway. *Their chicken & noodle veg soup & the beef oyster with noodles are also winners!

Good Chinese food and good, cheap sushi. Not as good as Yung Chen in Craighall but definitely one of the better Chinese places in Jo'burg. Great for takeaway lunch :-)

This place is ideal for quick, delicious and affordable takeaways. I had a vegetarian combo and its one of the nicest sushi's I've ever had. The food all looks and tastes great, and the staff were very friendly.

Best Chinese in the north. Delicious food , decent helpings and great value. Very complete menu, not your northern suburbs decor restaurant but then one goes out for good food and good company.

Ambience zero. Food and service good.
It was predominantly a 'take away' place but there are now about 5 tables inside and 4 outside and looks as though this will expand.
Food and prices are unbelievably reasonable. Service can sometimes be a bit slow because the food is freshly cooked.
Wine hardly any mark up at all.
Have the crispy beef and cucumber salad.... they are separate items.
Definitely worth with a visit.
Can't really say much more.

Have had really delicious take-away meals from this little restaurant but have never been impressed my the service. I've had my call-in order ready a full 10 minutes later than I was led to expect and even had an order given to another customer!

The veg spring rolls are delicious if they've not been burnt and the other meals we've tried have been tasty and fairly good value for money.

We'll give them another try, but hope that the level of service will improve.

Food is great, love the salmon skin fashion sandwiches and the crispy beef/pork.

An unbelievable meal! Fantastic and friendly service. Authentic Chinese food. Fresh and tasty sushi. One of the best Chinese restaurants in Joburg with affordable prices. Will be back very soon!
