Review Dong Sheng - Bryanston

Jozi Girl
Best sushi - affordable and sized right. Chinese food is absolutely Delish. Buy from here very often and I highly recommend Kung-Fu Kitchen. You can sit down (indoor and outdoor seating) or take away
Ruan Hattingh
Been ordering from them for the past 2 years now, each time leaving satisfied. Delicious Chinese and sushi with friendly service. The new lady working at the till struggles a bit to understand your order, as she got ours totally wrong. Other than that, really good experience.

My favourite Chinese takeaway - the pork with dry red pepper is spicy and tasty and generous. It's all I have.

The restaurant is not much to look at, looks like your typical Chinese take away restaurant but this is the best part about them. When you eat in the restaurant you get served really quickly, the sushi is freshly prepared and is very good and also well priced. You will almost always find a table here to sit at. The drinks menu isn't too broad but you'll find very nice Chinese drinks here, we especially like the coconut milk. Take away is mainly what they do best here and you can't go wrong with their food, everything we've had has been above average for the price!

The food here is reasonably good for the price paid. Portion size is always impressive and the take away is exactly what you would expect. Overall I give this a good rating but there are better places out there for the taste. But not comparatively for the price. Sweet and sour is my default meal here and has been for the last few years
Jaco Kruger
Bought their chicken sweetcorn soup, really nice.
Gareth Tiedt
Always great quality sushi here, and speedy service each and every time. A good place to grab a quick bite to satisfy the craving!
Johan Roth
The service is very good, I think their food is well priced and the Sushi is always great.
malcolm coulson
Cheap and cheerful with huge portions of super tasty Chinese done whilst you wait. A local fave.
Nick Dempers
Service was good and the food was great, except for the prawn chow faan which was a bit fatty.
Jenny van den Berg
Can't recommend this gem enough. Best sushi in the North!
Tracey Hatchuel
Just love this little spot - for great sushi and Chinese

I have not had such nice Chinese take out in a very long time! Thank you so much. Such quick service with OrderIn as well!

Best Chinese restaurant - food always fresh and affordable, friendly staff. Take away or sit down. Don't miss out on Wednesday's - BUY ONE GET ONE FREE SUSHI SPECIAL - we are regulars!
Angelique Ferguson
Sushi and spring rolls are great.... Service is slow especially on a Wednesday!!
Jenny Wewege
Great sushi

Went for sushi last night for a birthday dinner

Amazing food
Amazing service
Incredibly friendly and welcoming staff

So I just finished eating a few pieces and cannot bring myself to finish the rest. This is the worst tasting sushi I have ever had. It tastes stale and old but only after they gave my sushi to me I noticed they had premade sushi on the table. You only taste rice and a weird fish smell. The portions are small and hardly any salmon. I will never eat at Dong Sheng ever again, even if it were for free. Best part - there was no ginger or wasabi given with sushi. Complete waste of money.

It is Wednesday and as per usual, Dong Sheng has “buy one get one free” special on all their sushi. Since the special is so popular, you will have to wait for a bit. Today I had salmon roses and fashion sandwiches. Yum! It was good.

I had the sushi lunchbox, which consists of 17 pieces of sushi (4 California rolls, 3 salmon fashion sandwiches, 8 salmon maki and 2 salmon nigiri) for R80. The quality of the sushi was great, it was prepared in timely manner and the presentation was good as well. The restaurant itself isn’t very lively, therefore I suggest opting for the takeaway option. Besides the ambiance, the experience was good all-round.

I can safely say that i’ve tried more than 10 items of the menu (excluding sushi) and every item that i ordered over time was amazing... this is by far the best Chinese restaurant i have eaten at. The portions are quite large and 2 people could easily share 1 portion.
Portion: 5/5
Taste: 5/5
Price: 5/5
I order from Dong Sheng quite regularly on Orderin. I absolutely love their steamed pork buns. Their sushi is quite fresh. I also enjoy their affordable well sized spring rolls.

Small place with great service and food. My daughter loves the egg fried rice. Good value for money and tasty food. Our Friday night takeaway place.

We have been visiting Dong Sheng for easily five years. In all that time, we’ve yet to experience one disappointing meal. They offer a great sushi menu and fantastic Chinese dishes. It can get busy, but service hasn’t been compromised in our experience.

The restaurant is not licensed. Their best kept secret is their ‘2 for the price of 1’ on selected sushi on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

I am officially hooked, we ordered the assorted sushi and added sashimi, their sushi is so good and very reasonably priced. We also had the beef curry with fried rice, it was fully of flavoring and tender. Loved everything we ordered.
An overall good experience: the food was tasty, it arrived hot, spring rolls crispy and all in generous portions. In addition, it wasn’t just sauce and starch - there was a nice share of fresh veg and protein too.
The only complaint is that they forgot to add my fortune cookies - bummer LoL 🤪

Was Feeling like a Chinese dish and figured to try this restaurant out. Note Sloane square is going through an upgrade now, even though I felt like Eating in we opted for a take away because of the noise. Also, this restaurant does not give a sit in vibe. We ordered Duck Chow Mein, Prawn Chow Mein and sushi, because they had a sushi special.

The portions were substantial as they fit in a take away carton however, the vegetables in the Chow Mein were few and far between. I struggled to find an onion, the same can be said for the meat it was minimal. They also skimped on the soy sauce, the noodles were rather bland. The sushi was Fresh, and Fresh. It tasted good, a combination of avocado and salmon never goes wrong. As I type this all 16 pieces have been devoured.
I was looking for some Asian food and I tried in this place hit and sour soup.....for my starter I ordered chicken spring rolls it was awesome.and for main course it was crispy chicken and I enjoyed a lot...

Very nice Chinese restuarant will definitely be going back in future. Owner is very friendly. Had spring rolls which were 10/10, fiancé ordered seafood soup which he enjoyed. Boiled pork dumplings were very well done and then we shared a Chicken chop suey which was brilliant. Also tried the special fried rice on a separate occasion but didn’t enjoy it as much as it has corn and peas in it which I personally don’t eat. Will have the chop suey ANYTIME.

The restaurant is super clean and neat. That is an absolute must for me at every eating establishment. For any establishment for that matter.
I ordered the sliced beef with chilli and rice and my hubby had the crispy beef with rice. It was all very tasty. The last time we ordered the Chicken Chow Mein which was also superb.
Food is excellent! I will be back...

Great sushi - well worth the price! Especially if you get the buy one get one free special on Wednesday or Saturday! Pleasant enough place to sit and eat, but they also do takeaway.

Used to walk here from school years ago to grab sushi.
Quality has stayed pretty consistent through the years and is a good take out option. Can't really compare them with the high end sushi restaurants but give this family run business a chance :)
Luise Allemann
It may be cheap but the California rolls I ordered were all stodgy rice - which wasn't good sushi rice anyway - and a sliver of salmon so definitely won't order from here again - Pick n Pay on William Nicol still best sushi in my opinion.

If you're looking for good Chinese food or sushi at a reasonable price, then Dong Sheng is definitely the right place to go! I had lunch there and ordered the lunch box, and was impressed by the value for money. Would definitely go back next time I crave Chinese

My sister and I went for supper this past Wednesday at Dong Sheng and tried their special. Talk about value for money. The food was super fresh and the staff are extremely friendly and helpful.
We had an array of sushi, maki, sashimi, california rolls and hand rolls. You could taste the freshness, it was really great.
Most of the sushi was salmon all prepared in different ways, all good. We also tried the crispy pork, yum for days. If you want great tasting sushi for a reasonable price or good Chinese food I recommend Dong Sheng. I'll probably be back there for the next Wednesday special.

Really awesome takeout joint in Bryanston. I had a sushi lunchbox special which was tasty and amazingly priced. My boyfriend had the sweet and sour chicken which was also really good. Definitely a great spot for the price sensitive sushi fan.
Tyrann Burger
Always fresh food. Always good value. Been coming to this place for years. The buy 1 get 1 free is a winner. One thing that most places do not get right is the consistency of the rice. They do.
Oxford Comma
Had the takeaway 'lunch box' meal from Dong Sheng (my first time eating food from there). It was a really delicious and also really affordable. I don't know any other restaurants in the Bryanston area which have such affordable and really great sushi. Will definitely visit again.
Jamey Webber
Really good sushi, went on Wednesday night and you buy 1 get 1 free. So partner up with a friend and have fun eating tons of sushi for the fraction of the price.

Ordered from here for the first time today, I have eaten at many "Asian" restaurants, their food was really one point. Best Crispy Beef and Sweet and Sour Pork I have had in a very long time.... the Sushi was also very good and their prices are amazing too!
Heather Hook
Great, fresh and affordable sushi and Asian food joint. Service was good and sushi was beautifully plated. Minimalistic decor as is characteristic of a basic outlet, but one isn't really there for the decor. So excited to discover yet another sushi gem in my vicinity!!
Nicci 🌟
Really good sushi. Especially if you ordering on the buy 1 get one free special day.
It's clean and great staff orders come out fast. We had sushi which was fresh dim sums deliciously tasty and a seafood chow mein that was packed with flavor. 4 a Lil take away joint it's really good. I'll always keep coming back
Junior
This is a place to just get my craving of chicken chow mein or sushi sorted. Their duck isn't the greatest but the other chicken or beef dishes can do the trick.

They also deliver via orderin which can be very helpful if you're feeling lazy to head down there.

I'm a regular at Dong Sheng, definitely taking advantage of their sushi special on Wednesdays- 2 portions for the price of 1. It's a family run business and is personal and polite! The sushi is outstanding quality and very reasonably priced! Another favourite of mine is their chicken and sweet corn soup! Their chow me ins are decent and their portions sizes are huge, so I often get 1 portion to feed 4 people or use for lunches the next day! If you live in the area, you should definitely try them out. If you order for takeaways, phone earlier rather than later, as there is usually a 30-40minute wait after 6pm due to the high demand!

On impulse, I wanted a Chinese dinner so I decided to order my "litmus test" dishes from this restaurant to try.

I had Prawn Fried Rice and wanton soup. The soup itself was pretty salty and mysteriously thick in consistency. The wantons tasted nice though.

The rice in the fried rice tasted starchy. Felt like they either used too much water to cook the rice or could be they used the sushi rice to fry?! The taste was nondescript and the helping of prawns were over fried to a tough texture.

A rather disappointing sub-par meal.

Very good Chinese take away. Best in area I have found so far. Hidden away in Sloan square but worth the search. Small compact restaurant. Tasty.

It's like this little place just appeared out of nowhere and it's awesome and clean and delicious and friendly.... where have you been all my life.

Thank you Eskom for cutting our power last night, because if you hadn't we probably would never had tried this little gem.

We ordered a variety of dishes, chicken chow mein, crispy beef, sweet and sour pork and some spring rolls. I can honestly not fault the meal at all.

The pork took first place with the beef a very close second. So delicious and fresh. I am blown away.

Next... we'll give their sushi a try.
Kate Barnard
Best place to get two for one sushi on a Saturday or Wednesday. Plus it's a fairly good quality for the price you pay ✌🏼️ may no have the best vibe, but perfect for a takeaway meal.

Dong Sheng, almost completely hidden away in Sloane Square, is incredibly reasonably priced and their sushi spot is an excellent choice for Bryanston takeaways (if you are happy to fetch them yourself).

With our offices so close, this is my go-to when I am in a rush.

*Recommendation: On Wednesdays (and Saturdays), Dong Sheng have a 'Buy 1, get 1 free' special on all their sushi that I would highly recommend taking advantage of.

For more, find me on Twitter: LaurasW0rld

Wednesday is sushi day in our office... Everyone places their orders and we all end up eating way more than needed!!! The sushi is fresh and really good! I would not sit down and eat there, but great for lunch time takeaways.
Cameron Wood
This is a brilliant spot for a quick sushi take away! The food is always high quality and delicious. Wednesdays are great as you get two due the price of one which means the delicious food for half the price!
Tracey Hatchuel
Dong Sheng is a gem. The food is fantastic! From sashimi to won tun soup. A relaxed casual little place that we visit regularly and it's been great every time !
Jo
This is really more of a takeaway sushi and Chinese place but their sushi specials on Wednesdays and Fridays are great. Good value for money. Sushi pieces are on the smaller side though.

I think I may have found my sushimi nirvana.
Having come across this place with the help of my app yesterday, I found an excuse to be back today..more sushimi Sir and a few salmon roses while you are at it. I can even forgive the lack of a good sav blanc which usually accompanies my meal; will try the aloe vera drink instead. .yum
Natalie CJ Coomer
Love Dong Sheng for it's cheap sushi and buy one get one free, however if you looking for a romantic night out or a simple Friday dinner club choice, I wouldn't recommend it. It is great for takeaways and for the weekday work sushi lunch! Will definitely keep going here:)
Jeremy Coppin
A colleague and myself have been coming here for the Wednesday Sushi special for years now. I can without reservation say that the sushi is the best tasting I have had anywhere and that includes Lost City( OMG that was expensive.)
It is extremely neatly presented. The texture and taste of the rice and other condiments in my mind have not been beaten. If you are looking for fancy ambience and other overpriced rubbish then you this is not for you. Go and eat the junk they serve in Sandton Square. This is the real deal, Chinese family run restaurant where there is immense pride in what is put before you.
The rest of the menu is competitively priced, one day I may be able to resist stuffing myself with the sushi and try something else.
Btw everything is made fresh to order, no dried out plates, so don't expect to be in and out.
Zoe Lansdell
Came here for their buy 1 get 1 free sushi special on a Wednesday for a work lunch. We waited for quite a while before being served. The special menu is simple, you can have the basics. We ordered salmon fashion sandwiches, hand rolls and sashimi. We also had spring rolls that were delicious! We once again waited for ages for the food to come but when it did we were very happy with the quality of the sushi. Overall I was very pleased with my meal and the value for money, however the service needs a lot of work.

Dong Sheng is a restaurant where the food speaks for itself, the ambiance is highly lacking. I’ve recently moved offices to the Bryanston area, so I’m doing my rounds trying to find the best weekday deals and my favourite restaurants in the area.

Dong Sheng is great if you’re looking for REALLY cheap sushi. On Wednesdays and Saturdays they have buy one get one free sushi. It is great. They are so reasonably priced and the food arrives in no time. They don't really have waiters, making it kind of hard to rate the service.

We ordered a large array of sushi and some spring rolls, they all tasted delish, the only that I could fault is that the rice was very stodgy and they use way too much of it.

After reading some of the reviews, I'm looking forward to trying their hot dishes.

Not the fanciest, its true but, the food here is above average. I've dined in a group and have done Saturday night take outs. I can't see myself eating at any other non franchised Chinese Restaurant after this one. A definite win!
NicBLAZE
I sit here with a hot plate of Dong Sheng's Crispy Pork and noodles.

This establishment is a very small Chinese restaurant tucked away in small center just off the busy William Nicol. Right next door is a Kung Fu training facility to break the carbs and your enemies.

The place itself is styled very old school Chinese and extremely simple, no fancy decorations or anything like that.

But back to the food, which I've finished already, it was amazing, incredible, honestly I just might order another one. The meat was cooked perfectly and the sauce was just right, not too strong as if to drown the food and leave your taste-buds in tears and not too weak as if to leave flavour to the imagination. I really enjoyed it.

The lady is really kind, and is really quick to assist.

Overall, I think I will be back tomorrow for lunch.

***** update ****

Still really good
