Review Melt Chocolaterie - Bryanston

Matthew Benstead
The food here is really good. The homemade chocolate on the waffles is amazing (especially the dark chocolate). The milkshakes are also great. The service is very professional and friendly. The prices are also very reasonable for what you get.

Amazing chocolate treats and one if the best toasted cheese sandwiches *ever*! Clifford was a totally awesome host and brings incredible, positive energy!
Carlos Campos
Amazing healthy food, nevermind the excellent range of chocolates. Their toasted sandwiches are all next level. Delicious and sublime. Highly recommended. Awesome service. Thank you Clifford!! 2019. My wife and I have been back at least three times this year. Happy to say that the service is still fantastic and the food is awesome. Clifford is still there and still as friendly as ever. Love this place❤️👍

Amazing little find. As you walk in the smell of chocolate greats you. Food amazing as well and love the look and feel

Best open sandwiches and toasties🥪 Best waffles🧇 Chocolates and cakes👌🏻

A cute little cafe to grab a coffee and something to eat with friends. The staff are friendly and the food is delicious. I would definitely recommend their waffles (with dark chocolate, strawberries and Paul’s Homemade Ice cream)!

Good interior. healthy food and various hand made chocolate! perfect place in the nicolway shopping mall.
Kim Brink
Diverse menu with healthy and Banting options, nevermind the cake and chocolate selection! The staff are incredibly friendly and it's a real treat to go to Melt.

What an awesome rainy Saturday morning experience! I ordered the chocolate cake with a large cappuccino. The cake was moist and delicious. My hubby ordered the Belgium waffle and large Americano. The Belgium waffle was light and fluffy with a fresh strawberry taste and the Belgium dark chocolate was so smooth and rounded off the taste adventure. An absolute must-try! The service was excellent. We will definitely be back.
Enrico
Great food and brilliant atmosphere. We had the quiche that comes with a salad on the side, very tasty and fresh. The coffee was also nice and strong. The person that helped us was named Clifford, and I recommend that he helps you too as he is one of the coolest people you will ever meet, he made our day.

I have a serious weakness for artisanal chocolate. To my delight there's a great selection of it at MELT . The service was friendly, and the prices.. worth every cent.I find it strange that so often good meals,or artisanal products get critical comments about pricing. Great to find a center with a selection of quality shopping. We travel all the way from the Freestate

This is my go- to place for mother- daughter dates with my little ones. They have a chocolate fondue platter which we share. It comes with a choice of milk chocolate or dark chocolate and a variety of dippers- strawberries, bananas, wafer biscuits, turkish delights. The coffee is good and if you're there for lunch- there's a good variety of sandwiches. Only a pity the kitchen closes early- 4.30pm.

Most delicious chocolates and fantastic staff.
Chané Stievenart
Good banting options and freshly squeezed juices. Love the eclectic decor. Their chocolates are the best and a must try.
Michaela Kupsamy
Cute chocolaterie with a variety of chocolately food!

Appreciated the response from management and explaining why the shop was closed. I'm sure this spot will not disappoint when trying out they menu.

Seems like i have to go against the grain here. Saturday was brunch day and decided to give melt a try.

My wife opted for the Belgian waffle with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, judging by the smile on her face and the fact that she actually took a take away for what she could not finish says a lot.

Its actually the roast beef sandwhich that i am basing my score on. At 90 bucks i do not think this ks value for money, the flavours worked nice but overall lacked in what you expect at this price point. The open sandwhich was done on normal white bread toast (again at this price point a good ciabata or similar would be better value) the roast beed was less than 40gram (4 thin slices) and the goats cheese less than a teaspoon.

I dont mind paying for quality but a dining experience is as much a flavour as well as value experience

I’ve walked past this spot a million times, but this time, we were specifically after waffles and were told that this was the place to be.

Melt is a chocolaterie and coffee shop, and although it is in the middle of a shopping mall walkway, it still manages to create a kinda French cafe feel (Sandton Style ;)

The menu is small but well designed to suit the tastes of all of us on the day. The toasted sandwiches can be made with a selection of breads, the health bread was my pick and, with gruyere, ham and cheese, and came served with a fresh salad which was actually delicious and not just a garnish.

My mom went for the whole-wheat scone, a rather rustic looking one, with a generous helping of gruyere, jam and cream.

The kids had a field day with the waffles, and these definitely lived up to their name. The “crispy” waffles come with a number of topping options, including Belgian chocolate, honey, syrup and more, and you can also opt in for Paul’s Homemade Ice cream, which you can choose from a selection in the little shop.

This is fast becoming a little favourite of ours.

Service is friendly and efficient, the food has all impressed and the waffles meet the demands of some very picky customers! :D
Alison Milton
Best wholewheat scones with the most magnificent cheese, jam and cream. Cappuccino good too but could have been a little hotter. Seemed to take a bit of time today but well worth the wait. My friend's son had the chocolate brownies which looked delicious too.
Jillian Nyakane
I was trying it for the first time and I’ll go back again😋
Our salads were so good! It was delicious. It was tasty. It was full of flavor. It was fresh.

I enjoyed the juice as well. The ambiance of the shop is unique and intimate even though the physical set up would seem to contradict my statement.

The service was alright, the waiting staff was helpful and attentive.
Trisan Reddy
The cafe menu is decent. Nothing stands out. However, the dark chocolate cake is the best I've ever tasted. Most of the cakes are excellent and the chocolates are fantastic too. Friendly service.

Great look and feel... waiter took my order and was never seen again... another waiter brought my food and again no one returned, sat with the empty plate and glass for about 15mins. The waiters walked up and down in this time and never bothered to ask if i wanted anything else (i wanted to try something else) they looked at me and the table and never bothered clearing up. Anyway i had the toasted chicken and mayo with “lays” chips which was completely average 3/5, lacked flavor. The basic sandwich was overpriced. The salted caramel popcorn latte was really good 4/5. Would like to go back and try the cakes but will have it as a takeaway due to the service. In the time i sat and waited i noticed that the waiters are friendly to all the regulars that go there... not sure if they worry about the once off patron...
Marnus Breytenbach
It was a treat to enjoy an excellent cup of coffee and delicious smoked chicken sandwitch, with very friendly wait staff engaging with the regulars and creating a fun, casual atmosphere in the middle of the bustling mall. Service and food preparation took a bit of time, but all part of a supurb light lunch experience.
The Schoeman Brothers
Wow, what a wonderful little café hidden in the depths of Nicolway Shopping Centre. I recommend the milkshakes, melts and open sandwiches! I must warn you though: if you do not like decadent shakes or desserts do NOT order them. It almost feels like you are sitting somewhere wonderful and bright in the world just by sitting there. I definitely recommend it and am yet to be dissatisfied or disappointed.
Aidan
The only reason why I rated Melt 3.5 is because I have not really sampled their food save for the Belgian waffle. Which was good. Their coffee however is grand and R20 gets you a takeaway cappuccino. Even the freezaccino (sp?) is awesome. The chocolates are lovely and you can put together a beautiful box of chocolates as a gift. I will definitely be back again to sample more of their menu.

Always a nice catch up coffee date spot with the girls! Lovely coffee and breakfast is good. Always get the avo on toast :) always return for more!

Known for handmade chocolates and hot chocolate I decided to pop in as I love hot chocolate ,lovely hot choc and tried drunken cherry chocolates they were delicious.Due to festive season had ginger bread men and other creations
Diana Mak
You think for a chocolate shop they wouldn't know how to make delicious gourmet sandwiches... oh but they do! It's a win win because I come here for a good meal and then buy some chocolates afterwards. There's a variety of freshly made chocolates to choose from which makes it that much more difficult to leave!
Cailyn Stevens
First time visiting and definitely not my last! I was in heaven, literally! The aroma of the fresh baked goods and chocolates led me to buy almost everything! I spent quite a bit of money buying the different varieties of chocolates as I couldn't just choose a few - I had to have them ALL! 😱 the best homemade chocolates I've ever tasted and definitely can taste the quality.

My only problem was that the space is a bit tight and too full which leads to mild claustrophobia. Your restaurant/ Chocolaterie obviously does well by the looks of it!

All in all, I was totally 120% happy with my chocolates and definitely recommend coming if you're just as crazy about chocolate as me!

I had been meaning to try out Melt for ages after a friend recommended this spot to me a while back. To be honest, while it does look very cute and quaint, it wouldn't have been a first choice for me if I hadn't received the recommendation. I'm not a fan of sitting in the middle of the mall without much of a view, apart from people watching.

Went through on Saturday around lunch time to try out their waffles. It was rather busy but we only had to wait a few mins before a table freed up.

Seeing as we had already had lunch, my friend and I opted to share a waffle.

The waffle was nice, a little softer on the outside than I would've liked. It had also cooled down a bit by the time it reached us. And the chocolate sauce frizzled over is yummy melted chocolate ,it does however harden as chocolate does when it cools down, which is the only downside. Service was a little slow but pleasant.

The half was more than generous portion wise and they had shared it out for us. The only note I have is that the price for adding on cream is a little steep for just cream, but the portion is huge, evident in the pic.

Overall a pleasant spot for when the urge to grab something sweet hits.
Started my Sunday off with some scones and cappuccino from this little coffee shop. The wholewheat scones were delicious. It was served with Jam, Cream and Cheese - it was all good. However, slightly over-priced - 2 scones + 2 cappuccinos + tip was about R150
Andrew Simpson
Melts consistently makes the best tasting flat-white in town.
The friendly demeanor of the staff and the owner make you feel at home. Their selection of chocolate would cater to just about anything ones taste.
Jakkie Simpson
Best coffee in town, Nathaniel makes the most sublime flat white you'll ever find. Banting friendly and my favourite by far is the cheesecake, hits the perfect note. Overall a friendly establishment that goes out of their way to assist. Thank you!
Lisa Van Wyk
Fav cake in Johannesburg hands down! Genuinely never been disappointed. I have tried a few flavours but always revert back to the carrot cake. Just so delicious, love this place so much. Also the cappuccinos are always so hot and yummy! Megz Mackintosh

Stunning chocolate fondue & vanilla caramel cake served by the super bubbly & efficient Clifford.
Their open sandwiches looked awesome too.

Highly recommended for a quick bite.

All I can say is RED VELVET CUPCAKES! To die for 👍🏼 I needed 20 so called in for them to prepare them for me - cute little sit down area for a coffee and treat
Mia Maraschin
I love this little cafe. There's something so exciting about peeping through the window and seeing their melting chocolate and creations in the making. It's wonderful to sit outside in the passage and pass time by whilst watching all the happenings around you. I enjoyed their Signature Waffle this morning, it was hot and crispy and delicious. Our waiter, Clifford, was fantastic and on the ball. The let down was finding a bug in my syrup, nothing else can put a person off their meal more.

Lovely coffee shop although a lot of busy traffic outside. Good coffee & cakes/waffles. Service very pleasant A+. Would come by again. Worth a visit.
Ralph Hohls
I have so far resisted the temptation to try the chocolates but I have to say, being somewhat of a coffee snob, this place serves superb cappuccinos.
On par with WCafe and Seattle, if not better
Kaylyn
Cute little coffee shop, really tiny but they have a large selection of yummy cakes, I had the bake cheesecake the base was rock hard but the mixture was nice and creamy.

Over years I have passed Melt for no particular reason .
I have previously tried their Banting carrot cake which I loved .
Today I decided to just sit down and catch my breath , unwind it has been a hectic week !
The waiter recommended baked cheesecake that absolutely "Melted" in my mouth it was beautiful!
I enjoyed the cheesecake cake with my double latte extra hot - just the way I like it ..

Contrary to the fact that the restaurant is in the passage as I was enjoying my meal I completely forgot about passage and enjoyed my me time . ☕️🍰

I had a look at the menu and it looks good will sure be back to their Sandwiches..

Melt also offers a wide variety of cakes and sweet treats ..
Service was good as well always is on many occasions when ever I stop to buy the bating carrot cake .
Worth a visit ! Perfect little spot !

After always seeing full tables here, we decided to stop for coffee and cake. I ordered the walnut and date cake. The cake was super dry and lacked that special moist texture that one would expect, but perhaps the cake had been out too long and was not fresh enough. My daughter ordered the chocolate fudge cake and found both the cake and icing way too sweet. The cappuccino was good, but when we needed our bill, the waiter was busy. We asked another waiter to help but couldn't help noticing that there is a floor manager but he doesn't seem to support the wait staff, as one would expect.

I finally stopped in at this little Cholaterie this morning en route to work for a much needed pick-me-up and left happy, having over-dosed on caffeine!

Nicolway at 8am is mostly closed on the bottom level leaving the shopping centre looking desolate, but this spot definitely had its own vibe. I like that this little coffee shop attempts to set itself apart from the shopping centre ambiance and truly make its own mark.

Think 'Drunk Cherries', 'Mint Fondant' made with real mint leaves, Cinnamon Truffles..
I will return soon for a breakfast or lunch and update on their savory items, but their sweet tooth options are superb!

For more, find me on Instagram, Facebook & Twitter: LaurasWorldza

Finally tried out this hidden gem & wasn't disappointed! The most friendly & attentive staff, delicious food & small but unique menu. Incredible for sweet tooth cravings. Will be back ASAP.
Kerry Garden
The coffee is ok and they are really generous with the toppings on the open sandwiches. If you having their health bread don't toast it as it comes out burnt and rock hard.
Service is good
Mosa Mashati
THE WAFFLE WAS OUT OF THIS WORLD firstly. Service was efficient and friendly and they are very generous with their toppings portions .
I'm a huge waffle fan and here you are given an option of the thin and crispy waffle or a thicker waffle, there are also various toppings to choose from, from chocolates and marshmallows to seasonal fruits . It was a tender and chewy waffle in its centers, yet very light and crispy. Really really enjoyed it.
So unforgettable. Fell inlove with this cute spot.

Interesting little shop. their store made choccies were of a great variety and flavor . their cake selection is also quite wide in terms of ingredients( gluten free etc.)

Great service! Amazing handmade chocolates, the ginger chocolates are a favourite, the cakes are amazing! Good hot chocolate, Many options from Banting flourless cake to decadent cakes.

I would love to review this restaurant, however as we were not served by anyone, I unfortunately could not tell you what the food was like. My fiancé and I sat down to have a breakfast meal and the waiters at this establishment saw us, but refused to acknowledge us. We decided to wait for a bit whilst other customers around us, got served. New customers came in and were served immediately. Eventually we gave up and decided to leave. To put the cherry on top, one of the waiters said 'Thank you" as we left, as if this made up for their incompetence. Honestly, I have never been so insulted, as it seemed as if they would only serve customers that they knew from previous visits. Luckily there was a wonderful restaurant upstairs called Fego, where we were treated with such hospitality that I almost forgot about Melt's lack of service.

Cake glorious cake 😄. A happy place to make your heart happy with sugar. Coffee is good. Love the decor. Service is good but I don't like the position.
Charmaine
The gourmet open sandwiches are really good, they are not shy on the toppings and the ingredients are fresh. The hot chocolate is also great!
Martini
I had a delicious sandwich there consisting of smoked ham, emantaler and salad.
The mayonnaise dressing is the best I think I've ever had!
The service could not have been better.
The coffee was also excellent.

I can't really say much more as this was my first visit but I shall definitely be going back.
Linda
If you ever need a great freshly baked cake for sby occasion, this is where you stop in Jhb. I love melt, and I'm not even a cake person! Their red velvet will give you life, matter of fact, any of their cakes will :)

Went to Melt with my boyfriend and wow, just wow. I am a chocolate lover of note. I had the milk chocolate fondue which was out of this world. Boyfriend opted for something a little healthier and made his own salad which he said was great. The service is truly phenomenal. Will be back with some friends soon! Thank you so much to my fellow Zomato users for telling us about this place!

Time for a little update. My boyfriend went to Nicolway on Friday (28 October 2016) and he brought me home an array of chocolates. They were absolutely delicious. Nothing has changed over the past 5 months. The service was apparently still great and their chocolate is just so amazing. 🍫🍫❤️

I have also updated their rating. Originally I gave them 4.5 stars, but there's actually NOTHING I can fault them on - so here's a 5 star rating! ⭐️

Keep doing your thing Melt. Will come in myself soon for another fondue. 🙌🏼

Thoroughly enjoy visiting Melt, it's quaint and very inviting. I tend to stick to my favourite winter beverage of Hot Chocolate which is amazing here presented with tiny marshmallows. Their baked cheesecake is great too.
Alun Ferreira
This was the worst waffle in town , it is not a Belgium waffle as they say it is a thin hard waffle with no taste
Manager no care attitude
I would never recommend anyone there

We've been dying to try the hot chocolate at Melt Chocolaterie... unfortunately we might have hyped ourselves up about it a bit too much. The melted mini marshmallows on top were melty and amazing, but the actual drink wasn't anything special. In fact it tasted a bit like the powdered stuff... I was expecting creamy chocolaty goodness but was sadly disappointed... Which is surprising because the chocolate that they sell in store is so delicious.

I have previously also tried their smoked chicken sandwich, which was beautifully presented and tasty, but nothing spectacular. I'll definitely be back for their chocolates and cakes though.
Musab Amseth Cassiem
Had the real hot chocolate, quite pricy but really good. Really cool atmosphere, looks pretty rustic and delicious looking cakes for your mouth watering enjoyment!
Dilene Cranna
Have been going around tasting cheesecake, baked ! Thought this one was the best so far. The hot chocolate is very special and topped with the mini marshmallows makes it even more special. Love going to Melt as it is warm and inviting, service is friendly. Little on the pricey side but I don't mind paying for quality

THIS COFFEE is certainly a fantastic reason to start the week on a good note !! As I sip my perfect cappuccino and mindlessly watch passers-by, I cannot help but be distracted by the array of treats on display ♥️ from Banting friendly cake to wholewheat scones and an assortment of different chocolate displays I am in complete awe !! LOVE LOVE LOVE !!

So after going to Moemas last week, the sugar craving remained strong, so we found ourselves at Melt Chocolaterie at Nicolway. Fantastic assortment of cakes and sweet stuff with a decent food menu also. I had the Waffle with Belgian white n milk chocolate and a 'healthy' portion of cream. Waffle was a bit thin n crispy but overall still good. Erusha had the vanilla cake, was real good. Good service and its downstairs at Nicolway so a bit away from the busy restaurants upstairs. Worth a visit!

Always walking passed ogling their delicious cakes and cafe style food I eventually sat down and gave it a try.

The concise menu explicitly covering decadent and healthy. As it was cold the red latte was the perfect choice to warm up, although the drink was not piping hot.

Deciding between the sambo and the salad was a toughie as they all looked fresh and delicious. I succumbed to the sharing the Hungarian (R 60). A gourmet sambo loaded with lettuce, tomato, provolone, salami and drizzled with basil mayo.

Plated beautifully on a slate slab, Tumi (our sweet waiter), ensured that we each got our half. Gobbling down the piquant snack was a treat.

Next time I look forward to sampling their chocolate.

*updated review
Chose to sit down as opposed to grabbing something sweet to go. Opted to try a salad with roasted nuts, as well as a slice of vanilla cake with a cappuccino.

The salad was good. They went HAM on the nuts, and left them whole. I'm not used to that, as I expected them chopped. It added a lot of texture to it, and it was quite lovely. They also make a yummy creamy balsamic dressing. I legit cleaned up that little bowl.
Got the cake to go, and wasn't crazy about the buttercream. Sponge was nice, though.
They're one of the few stockists of Almond Breeze barista blend, which was so nice to in a cappuccino. Would definitely come back for that!
Claudia McGregor
Their whole-wheat scones are a hit - lovely and fresh with all the toppings. As far as cakes go we have only tried their lemon drizzle and red velvet cakes which were both outstanding! They also sell sandwiches and the usual little coffee shop fare. My husband is a big fan of their banting bread.
Maegan
Had coffee here with my future mother-in-law. The service was shocking. Took 10 minutes to be helped. Took another 20 minutes to get two cappuccinos. Then it took another 10 minutes to get the bill. Was unbelievably slow service.

However the coffee was good.
Anandie
A lovely place for delicious fresh baked scones and jam, a yummy piece of cake or a light meal. The cakes on display and offer are really divine, with Banting options for some which also taste lovely. The breakfast options are very delectable with friendly service and decent prices.
Angelo Smith
What a lovely lil place. They make the best caputino. And have the freshest cakes. Chilled relaxed vibe. Always bussy. Good place to take your besti

Health conscious consumers look away because this is the house of temptation that will make you give in for a solid cheat treat! I can't help but look around this shop when I go to Nicolway Centre. Their chocolates and cakes are all made from scratch on site, they are super creative and decadent. They do have sugar-free diabetic-friendly chocolate which is great. Their coffee is also really good, they have soya milk for the dairy intolerant and the barista's know how to make a good soya latte. Everyone their is very friendly and the look and feel of the shop draws you in. Have a look, you may find something special to indulge in!
Tarryl Moonsamy
Most amazing red velvet cupcakes or cake slices its simply the best. Every bite is moist and the cream cheese icing is to die for

The lemon meringue is also worth a try delicious

What a lovely cafe :). It's situated downstairs in the shopping Centre, away from all the other restaurants.

There's limited seating, and it's very popular - so usually always full. The management is very friendly and makes sure that even though you are waiting for a table, your presence is wanted. The waiters were all friendly and chatty, and make you feel like you're regulars.

I had the berry smoothie and the smoked chicken sandwich. Nothing unusual but the food has simple flavours which all go together very well and are delicious. For dessert we had the chocolate fondue. It was amazing. You tell that the chocolate used is a very good quality and there are a variety of sides of dipping in - fresh fruit, dried mango, marshmallows, Turkish delight.... Heaven. I would say the fondue for 1 was more than enough for the two of us.

Altogether it was a comfortable, chocolatey experience. Will definitely be back to try out their much raved about hot chocolate :).

Melt is a gem. We've been patronizing Melt very regularly since they opened at Nicolway and we've never, ever had a dud.

They have perfected their service and food presentation and their cakes and other food is really really great - if Melt serve it, it will be perfect. My perennial favorite is the Queen Elizabeth cake which is not too rich or sweet, and my wife could live off their cheese cake.

It's also a great place to stop and watch the world go by, as my wife often stops for a slice of cake as she gives the baby a bottle during a shopping expedition.

Highly recommended. I hope they never change.
Julia Louise Domanski
I'm so happy I finally tried out this little café! It has a nice ambiance even though it is in the middle of a shopping centre. I didn't get to try the famed chocolates or cakes but they looked divine! My friend had the chocolate brownie with honeycomb and said it's the best brownie she's ever had- very fudgy and rich! I did not have high hopes for my avo and smoked chicken salad (from the "create your own salad" section) and I was so impressed! For a dessert / tea café- their salad was large, fresh and delicious! Will definitely be back.
Marc Schmidt
What a brilliant gem of a find. We've walked past many times but not tried it as we tend to go to the restaurant strip. Have we been missing out!

Located in a shopping centre this little diamond has tables in the corridor and a beautiful & sophisticated display of their cakes & chocolates between the tables.

The service was quick & courteous. We had a Freezeachino (ended up ordering a second one) & a Berry Express smoothie to drink. They were awesome. I couldn't chose between the two which was better. Both excelled with flavour, colour & texture.

To eat we had a Hungarian Salami & a smoked chicken gourmet sandwiches.
The mixture of the strong tasting salami, provolone & basil mustard was superb. The avo & honey mustard on the smoked chicken was mouth watering. The presentation was artistic & the nuts on the side were delicious.

Before we left we dived into buying some of their homemade chocolates. They are great.

I'll never be able to come to this shopping centre & not stop to indulge my senses again.
This is my new favourite chocolate/coffee shop in town.
Mbali Shozi
Hi, this is Mbali and i was just wondering if you guys sell Chocolate Bars to melt if not can you recommend me to a place that does sell in Johannesburg?
Susan Littlejohn
Had the most amazing baked cheesecake! The cake display was the best I've seen in a long time and the waffles looked divine, definitely going to be going back to have one! Our waiter Clifford made us laugh and overall it was a very good experience.
Sonja Offwood
There is something very cute, homely and special about Melt. The style of the restaurant is unique and it has a warm feel to it. The service was great and friendly. We stopped here for a quick cup of coffee and cake, and tried the cappuccino and walnut cake. The cake was okay, it was very thoughtful to cut it in half and serve it on two plates ( as we were sharing it ) Its the little things that count! The place can feel a little cramped, but I am definitely keen to go back to try some other cakes and goodies from Melt.
Sam
I frequented Melt back when it was in Benmore shopping centre. They made the best red velvet cupcakes at the time. The location at Nicolway is awkward as it is in the middle of the mall aisle.

I decided to buy red velvet cupcakes which was the worst I have tried ever. The consistency of the cupcake was heavy, the icing was cheap. Not only was it overpriced but it was inedible too.
Andre Nel
Great little place for light lunches. Friendly and efficient staff. Their carrot cake is by far the best I've ever eaten and I come back often for some good coffee and yummy carrot cake.
Carina Van Zyl
I overlooked Melt the first few times I was at Nicolway, because it's not part of the restaurant strip and most of the seating is in the walkway. But don't make the same mistake! The food here is delicious and I think it is one of the best places for tea and cake in the area. The table of cakes is always fully stocked.

The cheesecake is definitely my favourite in Johannesburg. It is creamy, not dry and has just the right proportion of biscuit base to filling. It is also topped by a sour cream icing which is the perfect addition.

The service is friendly and quick.

Besides the delicious cakes, there are also handmade truffles and other chocolates for sale.

Good place for: indulging!, meeting friends for a catch-up, grabbing a quick lunch
Ross Muir
Always friendly staff. Food and coffee always good. Nice to see the owner still with hands on involvement- that will always keep quality and service where it should be. Will be back
Chanthe Innes
After walking past this little gem far too many times, my husband and I decided it was time to give it a try! Wow! Service was 100% and super friendly! We had the Hot Chocolate and scones which were just perfect for a Sunday tea. 💗
Thembelihle Seruto
Oh gosh! I love it here. They were one of the first to male red velvet cup cakes and were the best at making them, perhaps it's because it's actual beetroot and chocolate :)

Lovely deli, lovely treats, lovely staff, lovely goods to eat!
Must Love Pudding
Fabulous and speedy service. I had the smoke beef open sandwich - Yum. But what I enjoyed more was the chocolate spring rolls. Delicious coffee as well. Next time I definitely want to try all their handmade chocies :D
Kimberly Nicholls Kruger
A kid in a candy store - that's how I felt sitting at my table in melt. Amidst the hustle and bustle of Nicolway you feel like you're in your own little sugar frosted bubble. The waffle I had (you can make your own) was crisp and not oily - just the way I like it and my Belgian hot chocolate with added cinnamon and a heap of marshmallows was out of this sugary world good. Didn't have a problem with service, the waiter was attentive and even entertaining while he checked on us from time to time. They also have healthier dishes such as smoothies, salads and sandwiches so there is something for everyone. Overall, a delightful experience which I wouldn't mind doing every day - if only my waistline would allow me.
Amy Lara Baxter
This is my favourite coffee shop! Their chocolates are to die for! Their cakes are to die for! Their coffee and teas are to die for! Their chocolate fondue is to die for! Their chocolate spring rolls are to die for! I just love this place!
Christine M
Melt is a slight oddity in Bryanston, but I mean that in the nicest way. It is not about function but pleasure. It sits nestled in Nicolway but provides an oasis of cake and tea and promises nothing more than a delicious sandwich, granola and yoghurt or chocolate to be paired with it. I went for breakfast one Saturday morning, having heard rave reviews about their delicious carrot cake and red velvet cake. It's breakfast menu is modest but adequate, unless you are after eggs, there are options for delicious toasts, granola, yoghurts and fruits. I actually opted for a lunch time sandwich of hummus, salad and artichoke on rye and my breakfast company picked out a whole wheat scone which came with a tower of toppings (cream, cheese and jam). Both were absolutely delicious! The rye bread was possible the best I have ever had, thick, soft but perfectly toasted, it felt like a treat in every bite. The coffees were equally lovely, paired with dark chocolate cookies. I will definitely be back, maybe next time for the cake (which was a bit of a tease at breakfast)!

We came for a slice of cake and some coffees. Melt is a quaint, well designed little coffee shop. Antique pieces on display and mismatched wooden tables and chairs make for a lovely little environment. We had the vanilla sponge cake and coffees - both were most enjoyable. There is an array of chocolate products on offer - great variety. Overall, a great place to have a relaxed coffee shop experience.

The chocolate infused coffee bean is delicious and tastes amazing in a steamy latte. And the banoffee pie is a very sweet indulgent treat. A good spot for a quick cuppa and chat with a friend.

Favourite cake shop! The Carrot Cake is an absolute must! And if you're sitting in the Belgium Hot Chocolate (:

I recently had tea and scones here with my mom and we had the best experience! Usually a wholewheat scone is a tricky thing to perfect, but I've never eaten a lighter, fluffier scone in my life. The lemon cake was an absolute delight as well. The presentation of their food is also lovely, and the service very friendly. We had to pop inside to try some of the truffles on display, and they were nothing short of perfection - you have to try the almond, marzipan and date variety!

Man, I love this spot. It's classy and service is always friendly and knowledgable. Everything on the small menu is perfect. Plus you get to watch them making their amazing chocolate while sipping on your coffee.

We walk by this mini restaurant every weekend, and haven't really given it a second glance. Today, we decided to have breakfast there, and were absolutely blown away. The menu is awesome - there are such fun and different things, and the waitrons are very knowledgeable about their dishes. The food is spectacular! We both had waffles that were cooked to absolute perfection - just slightly crispy. I had strawberries with mine, and the waffle was barely visible under the sliced strawbs - no skimping there. My boyfriend had the whipped cream with his, and it was thick, creamy, and delicious. Both were covered in a sprinkling of chocolate powder. The service was superb, the waitresses friendly and attentive. The tea is served in china teacups and a silver teapot, and the tables and chairs are quirky yet tasteful. Too lovely.

Oh - and on our way out, we spied the couple next to us having lunch, and it looked fantastic. We'll definitely be back!

So I decided to visit Nicol Way, and of course the first place that comes to mind for some cake is Tasha's. I mean that's what most people think when mentioning Nicol way. But the you walk down the steps and in the middle there lies Melt... The name itself should have your mouth watering. I'm not a huge fan of the stainless steel teapot but here it was like I had a teapot from a palace somewhere, the tea cup had a quirky saying and I was instantly put in my happy place ???? presentation is key and if you getting it right with tea... Hi5. You see the chocolate master through a glass window and as he pours the chocolate into moulds you I wanted to lye on my back with my mouth open and let the chocolate pour in (don't think it's appropriate to do that in Nicol Way though) James my waiter knows his cakes and gets me excited to try them all but I decide on the double thick all chocolate cake they are after all a chocolate shop. Champion the cake and James for recommending it to me. This cake was crazy I mean I know the usual chocolate cake caramel filling Ganash on-top this had like a slap of solid chocolate in the middle, with an amazing chocolate it wasn't frosting it was solid chocolate and the cake mmmmm moist ????

So if you looking for something a bit more intimate and not to loud try Melt.

WOW! This place is amazing! When someone told me about this chocolate place I didn't beleive it so we had to go to see if what we were told is true.

We were not disappointed! It's a bit awkwardly positioned in the middle of the passage. Once we were seated we didn't really even notice. My husband had a waffle and it was delicious! His was covered in white chocolate. It was so fresh! I ordered the chocolate fondue for one. It comes with your serving of choice. I chose seasonal fruit and nougat. It was absolutely delicious! I had to drink a whole bottle of water because of the richness but it's so worth it!!!

The sandwiches looked good too if you feel like something more savoury.

There are a wide variety of drinks too. There coffee is delicious.

If you feel like something sweet I would definitely recommend!

Melt is oddly placed in the middle of Nicolway. When I mean middle, I mean middle of the walkway. It's quite an odd placement which can be disconcerting but it does somewhat work. Melt looks like a confectionery shop filled with tasty goodies but they also have a small, but brilliant sit down menu.

The menu, in general, is just fantastic. Being quite hungry, I ordered one of the five sandwiches they have on offer. This was the least tasty thing I ate there but this does the sandwich a disservice. It was a fantastic open sandwich with fresh ingredients on even fresher health bread. It was tasty and sized just right. My only criticism is that all the meats used are cured as opposed to fresh. I prefer fresh but I guess it boils down to preference. I ordered a smoothie with it - the Peachy Bum. Apart from having probably the worst name ever, the other criticism is that it's too damn small! It was amazing but was over before I knew it!

The desserts - OMG WOW! I was lucky enough to have a bite of the brownie. I felt as if I was being tempted by the devil by indulging in this. Absolutely beautiful. The waffles are also delectable. I also sampled the chocolate milkshake. Again, I felt as if the devil was at play yet again - is it even legal to taste that good? I've also heard that the red velvet cupcakes are amazing but I did not try these.

So if you're in Nicolway and need a sugar rush, stop here. If you want something savoury, Nicolway does have better options.

December 2017
So yes, I've not visited Melt in years! Sunday we decided on breakfast ... my goodness, it was good! Hein had the Smoked Chicken sandwich on 2 slices of toasted Health Bread with lettuce and honey mustard sauce. It was really good!

I had a toasted slice of white bread, topped with peanut butter and Jalapeno slices. I asked the waiter for syrup/honey and he gave me honey ... which I drizzled all over my open sandwich. It was absolutely smashing!

April 2013
Melt is a small but very cosy little coffee shop.

I heard about their Carrot Cake. And I ordered it - it was fabulous! Moist, flavoursome and quite a big slice - definitely a must try!
