Review Wombles Steakhouse Restaurant - Bryanston

Sophisticated decor, excellent service and fantastic food! Wombles is definitely a place to save up for and splurge on a wonderful evening out. The fillet steak was cooked perfectly and was nice and tender, definitely one of the best steaks I’ve had in Joburg. We also had the venison special which was really tasty. My only gripe was the small and quite average salad, which came with a ridiculous R75 price tag. Everything else was worth the fine dining prices though.

The ambiance & vibe is fantastic. This East African themed restaurant calls for a unique dining experience. The dishes are tasty and different so if you don't want the same old food at the same old restaurant then this is the place to go. Don't get confused with which waiter is there to serve you as they all play a role with different specialities. Great place for a date night as this is fine dining at its best.

Wombles is a great and amazing experience! Food Wombles is famous for their Steak - and with good reason. I had the T-bone, it was huge we cooked to my liking, tasted fresh and they did not ruin it with sauces and all those. Just pure 100% beef! Their Ice Cream is really second to none. All homemade and tasty. Atmosphere The setting is ambient, luxurious and elegant. They had candle lights on the tables and rose paddles. The place is really gorgeous. Service Its pure fine dining service you get, from great waiters that are always checking and refilling your drink, to hosts that explain specials and food to you and professionalism all round. Wombles is really a great dining experience, go there with a good budget and make reservations.

Very 'colonial' I'd say old chap with a touch of class. Very friendly and efficient service and also more than one patron attending to all your cunnelary needs. Decor is fantastic and. If you take the people away you could easily imagine that you once had a farm in Africa and your colonials would be over for some high tea soon. The food was scrumptious and I will go back again when I'm an in that side of the woods.

Wonderful venue for a special occasion. Classic old school steakhouse but with all the trimmings - the staff are friendly and professional, the atmosphere is warm and cozy and the menu is impressive. Presentation was excellent. We’ll definitely be back.

Superb 5 star service! Perfect for special occasions and guests to Jozi. Their signature steak specials are a crowd pleaser. Wonderful balance of colonial charm with a homely and comfortable setting. A friendly & professional team will go out of their way to make your dining experience special. Must book in advance.

What a fantastic restaurant. The whole vibe and ambiance is very welcoming yet professional, they have managed to combine a place where both business and family related get togethers can be held. The staff are well trained and the food absolutely amazing, I will definitely be making a concerted effort to go back there. Thank you for a great birthday dinner

Saw this place and sounded like an old school kids memory!!!! Arrived there and signage was bold....this means they are proud of what they do and want to pull you in. As I walked in I immediately knew this was above the norm. Decor was upmarket. People were relaxing outside after work for a glass of wine. Immediately the host invited me in and lured me to my table. Welcome bread and garlic butter is always a win for me. Had a 350g Sirloin steak and Fries with Garlic sauce and Onion Rings and a bottle of Babylonstoren 'Babel'.....Steak was excellent!!! Wine accelerated tjengood feelings. Overall this restaurant is very good and service is top notch even at international standards. I like big portions and this place delivers on quality and quantity. Loved it!!!

Decor is amazing, perfectly suited for the cuisine. Service and food was excellent. Excellent place for small and large groups!

Wombles is a brilliant steakhouse. Definitely not a place for vegetarians. If you are offended by or opposed to eating game, then this is not the place for you. They serve regular meats as well as game though. Portions are very generous, staff are efficient and friendly. Very expensive to eat here though, so unless you can afford to spend large amounts keep this place for very special occasions. My meal was chips, 500g prime rib steak and a glass of wine and it came to just around R550 for my meal and drink alone. Definitely worth the spend though. The steak was just how I liked it and tasted absolutely wonderful. I have no idea what they do to their french fries but those are addictive and delicious. There is wheelchair accessibility here, and I would recommend placing a reservation.

Wombles is in the middle of Bryanston, but feels like you having dinner at a high end game reserve in one of their bomas😊, alot of game options on the menu, and really good wine menu. The food is really tasty, the Kudu stake was amazing, really nice game carpaccio as well. Service was really good as well. Atmosphere was excellent.

Wonderful venue, professional service & delicious food! Consistently delivering the best. Well worth a visit. Some of the best steak dishes in Gauteng.

Excellent service paired with amazing food, great vibe 👌 second time I've been and it's still great. Try the lemon meringue ice cream 😉🍧

With a traditional colonial atmosphere inspired in the safaris this upscale restaurant has one of the best meat selections in Joburg together with a very good wine list. My favourites are the Fillet on the bone, springbox carppacio and the tiger shirps...don’t miss ir if you’re around Joburg
Vinodh Kishori
Excellent food, excellent service, price is reasonable. Good menu that caters for everyone, good chill out place

Still the BEST Steakhouse in Joburg! The quality is always consistent. The staff are extremely friendly and knowledgeable. Graham the Maitre'D is a conductor who leads the chorus and ensures everything is to your satisfaction. We will keep coming back for more! 😋

Took my beautiful Janique to celebrate our 1st anniversary and her birthday. I haven't been to Wombles for many years and was a bit worried it may have lost some of its charm I so fondly remember from Parkhurst. I should have known better - the evening was spectacular and attention to detail second to none. The service was world class and the food exquisite!!! Thank you Wombles for making our evening so memorable. Can't wait for our next visit. I promise I won't wait for so long this time

Amazing food, service, decor, ambiance... Great everything. It's so worth the slightly higher prices for food

We had the most incredible and amazing evening. The food was excellent, the wine was amazing and everyone was friendly and never once felt rushed to leave. Thank you for making our wedding anniversary dinner a one to remember.

If you are looking for a great steak, look no further. For non steak lovers there is a great selection on offer. The service at Wombles is impeccable and it is my number one choice for special celebrations. Remember to call and book.

Visited the establishment on a weeknight. We received a warm welcome upon arrival. The restaurant decor gives a warm relaxed vibe. From our starters to the main course all the dishes were tasty. Our server was attentive. This place is a gem. Can’t wait for another visit.

Had the most amazing dinner at Wombles! I took my boyfriend there for his birthday, and we were both extremely impressed. The setting is cozy, warm and romantic. The staff are all incredibly friendly and the service is fantastic. <br/><br/>For our main, we had the fillet on the bone which comes with a red wine and bone marrow sauce - it was delicious! For dessert, I had the pavlova. It is easily one of the best desserts I have ever had, I would definitely rate it 10/10. My boyfriend had the malva pudding and said it was one of the best he’s ever had. The sparkler and birthday message were a very sweet touch. We can’t wait to come back!!
Claud Pillay
the service is unbelievable. The steaks ate just delicious and lovely vegetables served with all mains. A large selection of wines and whiskeys as well.

Another superb night with friends at Wombles . <br/>Stunning food and service (as usual) from the moment one walks in the door and is greeted by the friendly and knowledgeable staff.&amp;nbsp; I can highly recommend the fillet on the bone it just melts in the mouth and is absolutely delicious, my wife raved about the duck with cherry sauce along with the complementary Wombles vegetables, To follow my favorite at Wombles is the Pavlova.
Lucian
After numerous recommendations, I decided to give Wombles a go. Just off William Nicol, you find this gem. The welcome at the door was warm and we were shown to our table. I felt at home. We were given a chance to peruse the wine menu and opted for the Rupert and Rothchild Classique wine. The maître d gave us a run down on the daily specials & recommendations. <br/><br/>Opted for the following:<br/>Starters: Duck Liver Pâté (8.5/10)<br/>Mains: Lamb Shank (9/10) and Beef Fillet Stroganoff (7/10). Served with veggies.<br/>Dessert: Pavlova (8/10) and Malva (9/10)<br/><br/>The service was outstanding. A big thanks to the service crew of making this day special.

Amazing restaurant for any occasion. We’ve been twice to celebrate our Anniversary and the guys have always made it very special for us. Just beautiful!

This is five-star rating from reception to leaving! The atmosphere, the service, the food - everything with attention to detail - all combining to make a dinner experience par excellence. What more can one want for a truly exceptional evening out!
Robbie
This is the place to eat, our experience was absolutely fantastic! <br/>We loved the decor, the attention paid by all the staff, and then the food totally lived up to the high expectations which the rest of the experience had set! <br/>Price point in line with the overall impact it had on us. <br/>Can’t recommend it highly enough. <br/>

Wombles is consistently rated as one of the best steakhouses in Gauteng, and I can see why.<br/>The restaurant is nicely deforated with an almost African yet regal feel to it.<br/><br/>My wife and I had dinner there recently, in our bid to pass time while load shedding wreaks havoc in our lives. I enjoyed the beef fillet on the bone special which was served with the vegetables. The meal was delicious with the meat done expertly as per my request. My wife enjoyed the house burger which was a little burnt at the edges. We capped off the night with malva pudding dessert which was delicious.<br/>The service was great but it could have been a little quicker. I would highly recommend you call and make a reservation at Wombles.<br/><br/>Food 4/5<br/>Ambience 4/5<br/>Service 3.8/5<br/>

This is the first time we have been back to the restaurant since it moved.<br/>The setting is delightful.<br/>Drinks in the garden under the tree served by warm friendly staff followed by supper in the quieter colonial inspired dinning room to the right of the entrance.<br/>Some had a starter of avocado ritz which comes deconstructed ?. My salad with blue cheese dressing was delicious as was my combo of springbok shank and kudu served with butternut mash green peas and caramelized onions. The salmon was reportedly very good as were the lamb chops. This all accompanied by nice wines from a good wine selection desert and good coffee. Delicious!<br/><br/>
Andrea Snaddon
Just had our Wedding Anniversary dinner at Wombles, it was wonderful, the food, the service and the ambience. We ate Lamb Shank which was tender and delectable - the puddings of Creme bulee and pavlova were also sublime. Lots of staff with just the right level of service.
Tarryn
went there for my anniversary....the food portions are really good and tasty and their desert is also really really good....service is outstanding....wine list is a bit pricey but for a special occasion you can forget about it....thank you for a good night

Waste of money, no where near expectation of quality of food. Steak was bad, chewy. Order mid rare, came half rare. Guys inside are confused who to deal with that.
Daniel Makoni
The service was just AMAZING, very welcoming and attentive. Fantastic ambiance. A colonial feel that really gets you in the right mood.<br/>The food was great! Had the tomato and basil pesto soup + duck + Springbrok and kudu combo. Couldn't fault a thing. Really enjoyed the night out to just connect with my better half.
Tamlyn Arnold
Lovely old style service which makes you feel really special. Food is tasty. Unfortunately our steaks were tough. If you want traditional veggies, food and service... this is the place for you.

This is a very popular steakhouse in Johannesburg, especially, among the office crowd. It seems to be a meat lovers' paradise; too bad a vegetarian like me had to go along with the rest of the team. They have an excellent collection of wines, saw at least three large racks. I heard raves for the fish, kudoo n prawns. My ravioli was ok, the sauce was too sweet, the filling lacked flavor. But, the overall experience around the table was awesome, I will go ahead with a 5!!
Zethu Dumakude
I loved it. The quail was so buttery and gorgeous. I had the ostrich which was good. A warm and inviting atmosphere on a rainy night, was perfection.

Four of had lunch here on Friday. Fillet on the bone for all of us. We were not disappointed it was very good. As was the service. Duck pate and bone marrow starters also memorable <br/>
Werner Hess
Great restaurant. I had a Cesar salad as a starter. 10 out of 10. The steaks we had were perfectly done. Pavlova for dessert - out of this world. An old favourite that just keeps on delivering!!!<br/>
Stephan Van Der Merwe
Amazing food service and atmosphere! Prince was our waiter and he did a brilliant job. The lady manager was also superb , she showed an interest in our occasion and spoiled us accordingly
Yuri Ramkissoon
I have visited Wombles on a few special occasions and it is well worth the price. The service is impeccable., they have an impressive wine list and their food is just faultless. From their starters to desert, it is all wonderful. They make the best steaks in Johannesburg and go out of their way to accommodate special requests. The home in which the restaurant is situated us warm in winter and airy in summer. Highly recommended.

Great food.. Classic ambiance.. lovely decor ... unique gastronomy.. poussin was amazing but the lamb chops could be done better.. the quantity is filling

So my husband always wanted to have dinner at Wombles. I had eaten there when they were still in Parktown and enjoyed my meal. Being at a steak house I didn’t expect too much being a vegetarian. The pasta was terrible. Had no flavor at all. My husband was not impressed at all. They need to go back to basics.
Yudeshtra Naidoo
Great warm setup and lovely vibe. It is a steakhouse but exceptionally limited offerings for vegetarians and vegans aside from side order vegetables. It's 2018- time to consider the vegans in the party!
Mukhtar Dharsey
Lovely restaurant with an old school feel in terms of decor. Really excellent waiters with very personalized attention from the owners. Willing to meet our dietary requirements - halaal friendly. Have had the 700gm fillet which was really excellent and cooked to perfection. Highly recommend.
Tom Pullen
Sadly I have to rate Wombles an average 3. We were a party of five for our anniversary lunch yesterday and all diverse meals, including steaks were average and rather bland. It was not worth the premium paid unfortunately.
Madeleen Engelbrecht
Lovely setting, but the food did not live up to expectations, not the price. For main course we ordered the fillet on the bone special and duck confit. The fillet was tender and tasty but the mushroom and bone marrow sauce was not good. The duck was nothing special. We shared a creme brûlée which was delicious and the highlight of the meal. The restaurant was empty, maybe due to the public holiday. All a bit disappointing.

Was a bit disappointed by Wombles!😞<br/><br/>After having such high expectations, I finally went there next week waiting to have my taste buds satisfied.<br/><br/>Once there, I was surprised by the decors of the place which was really cool and puts you in a nice ambiance.<br/><br/>The waiters were rather polite.<br/><br/>We ordered some appetisers, which were very average I must say. <br/>I wouldn’t recommend any of them.<br/><br/>The steak was awesome (but then again, so is every steak you can have in SA).<br/><br/>The desert were very average.<br/><br/>Then, the price is extremely high compared to what you usually pay in Johannesburg!<br/><br/>Won’t be coming back, it’s not worth it🤯
SimplyPierre
It claims to be the best steak it Johannesburg and let me tell you, it does not disappoint. I ordered a 500gram steak which can be a big block of meat, yet it was done so well that every mouthful was cooked perfectly and felt like butter on your tongue. It was very expensive but definitely worth it.

23/4/2018<br/>We went to this exquisite restaurant for a birthday celebration. <br/>The scenery was rustic, with fine china, table linens and subdued light to encourage lingering, the theme resembled a cabin in the woods, with carcass mounted on the walls, camping hats and picnic baskets eloquently placed around the restaurant. <br/><br/>The service ran like a well oiled machine, the host sat us by the balcony area overlooking the North- Gauteng skyline, he pulled out my chair and placed the napkin on my lap, shortly after bread was served with a delicious variety of well churned butters. <br/>The Maître d, came over and notified of all the specials as he suggested we hear them all prior selecting a wine so as to pair our meals.<br/><br/>We ordered the man size 1kg rump with mash and duck confit with orange mandarin sauce and sweet potatoes, which was all served with complimentary butter purée, peas and pickled onions served/ dished out upon request by the busser. <br/>Our meals were generously portioned and well prepared, the rump was massive and juicy and the duck so soft it fell off the bone. <br/><br/>Shortly after the delicious meal, my partner was surprised with a complementary dessert of ice cream in a caramel basket as it was his birthday, it which was delicious. <br/><br/>I highly recommend this restaurant, as the professionalism is immaculate, the food cooked to perfection and the scenery theme is well executed.

I got so caught up in the experience I forgot to take photos! <br/><br/>Because of the price premium my expectations were very high - Fillet on the bone for R270, excluding fancy veggies and red wine starting at R200 a bottle means it has to taste really really good to be worth it. I’m very happy to report back that it’s not a waste of money at all - the opposite really. <br/><br/>It’s not just the quality of the food that makes Wombels special - it’s the insanely good service, the ambiance when you walk in the door, the crowd you are surrounded by, the decent wine glasses, and finally, the happiness at the end of it all. <br/><br/>It’s a fail-safe option when hosting international clients.
Lesley Eatwell Smit
Before even receiving a menu we were asked what we would have to drink. We had to place starter order with main meal order. I felt rushed. Food was delicious couldn't have asked for better.
Justin Le Roux
The epitome of dining out. Wombles has it all, the best service and hospitality in the country bar none. The most amazing starters, mains and deserts. An unreal wine list. Fantastic decor. Atmosphere like no other. Here’s a menu for you; try the bone marrow starter (to die for) Aged 750g T-Bone, rubbed in herbs, spice and cracked pepper with a mustard sauce on the side, flambé’d crepe Suzette’s for desert and a big heavy red to go along with it all. My favorite restaurant in Joburg by far.
Shawn Rorke
Took my wife for valentines. I loved it, my wife loved it, I loved it that my wife loved it... the ambiance, friendly people and excellent food.
Andrew James Edgcumbe
Superb meal last night. We had Luderitz oysters and the fillet on the bone with porcini and marrowbone sauce washed down with Hermanuspietersfontein Klein Meisie Sauvignon Blanc. Skipped desert and requested a glass of Sauv Blanc - was a tad peeved that waiter brought a glass that cost R110 - so he lost out on a full tip. Will go again.

Love this old world charm excellent service amazing decor and decadent food. My first choice in this area. Wine list extensive, waiters well groomed and trained. Most incredible meat dishes and large portions. I have one request. Increase the options for fish eaters please? I would love to see what your incredible chefs can do with a larger choice of fish or vegetarian dishes. Please tempt me!! I’m dying to come back for a fish meal as dynamic as your meat and other offerings.
Sean Slabbert
Stylish entrance and welcoming staff. Liked the balance of African and rustic decor. Nice variety in the menu and well matched wine list. Very efficient order taking and serving of our meals. Appreciated the personal touch of the co-owner explanation of the specials and recommend dishes. My Kudu fillet and Springbok shanks were delightfully good. Springbok was melt-in-the-mouth tender. All round a very pleasant dining experience.
Marcel Naudé
Last night, we went for a business dinner at Wombles. The vibe is incredible and the staff is very well trained. The maitre'd was impressive. I had a 4 prawn starter, which was very good, and the fillet on the bone main, which was delicious, and chocolate mouse desert.
Jonathan Abrams
Went there for a corporate lunch this past Tuesday. The quality of the meat was unbelievable. Had the special of sirloin on the bone topped with a short rib.

Stepping into Wombles felt like stepping back in time. The restaurant is very large and has an old colonial/safari style, which is still very attractive.<br/><br/>Service was great. Friendly, attentive. Literally every person we passed on our way to our table greeted us with a smile, which unfortunately is not something you find all that often anymore.<br/><br/>I had heard amazing things about the food here from my friends that I was dining with and was amped to try the food they had been raving about for weeks.<br/><br/>Wombles menu allows you to choose your cut, with sauces and sides as separates. They do however offer complimentary veggies which are served to you when the meal arrives.<br/><br/>My meat was perfectly cooked, faultless really. I ordered the peppercorn sauce and mash as a side. The sauce was just "nice". My mash was unfortunately not as creamy and buttery as I had hoped it would be, but was still good.<br/><br/>Overall it was a very pleasant experience. Maybe not as mind blowing as my friends had made it out to be, but definitely one of the better meals I've had in a while.
Wilma
Unpretentious decor, welcoming atmosphere and excellent service. The bone marrow starter is amazing... then again so is everything else! We can recommend the prawn starter, kudu fillet and Springbok shank combo, and the quail.
Dave
Great ambiance.<br/>Fantastic service<br/>Excellent wine<br/>Well managed <br/>And the steak will make you come back for more.<br/>Professional staff and management<br/>Definitely recommend as best steak house in SA<br/>

I had an outstanding experience at Wombles! My girlfriend and I were taken care of by Prince who was amazing. Excellent service, delicious food, and a great wine list. Will definitely be back soon!

The service at this place cannot be described. Everyone is professional and friendly and helpful. The food is great - they have some interesting options. Can recommend and will return as soon as possible.

Hemesh Dhulab Jaimal Dhulab Sanam Gowan @Meghaa Patel Kavish Mistry<br/>Birthday dinner was amazing. Best dining experience I've had in a long time. Ambience, friendliness of the staff and the taste of the food struck a chord. Cannot emphasize what a satisfying meal I have just had.
Simóne Ferreira
Firstly and most importantly, this was the best service I've ever received at a dining establishment! Absolutely top notch! I had the prawns for starters and fillet for my main. Both dishes were prepared perfectly and I can't find fault with either. Was it the best steak I've ever had? Perhaps not, but the service and cozy ambience makes up for that.
Shanil Haripersad
Really good atmosphere. Service was great. Food was good. My only gripe was that it was a bit pricey and they charged for extra basting on the side of my steak as apposed to on the steak which it comes with. Most steak places don't charge this as extra.
Diana Mak
Had great service and food! What more could you ask for? We were a fairly large group (+12 people) but managed to get through starters, mains and dessert in 2hrs. I ordered the springbok shank which was a bit too strong for my liking...but luckily the dessert was a good save!
Monochrome
On the ball service- pleasant & helpful. The food is reasonably good but overpriced. You could probably get better value at the Turn n Tender down the road. I wouldn't return here for that very reason as well as not liking the decor of the place. There are 2 parts to the place- the pub side & the restaurant side which is the better side to sit in.
Amanda Du-Pont
By far the best steak house in jhb!!! Ambience is so cozy in winter. Lovely fire place area outside.<br/>Had the best basil/chilli prawns starter...possibly the best prawns I have had. Had the fillet on the bone, just so tender and tasty. Beware they have large portions, consider sharing. Boyfriend had the man rump and was congratulated with a complementary don pedro. Little details and thought make the world of a difference:) <br/>Highly recommended x

If you are looking for a family restaurant or want to have a business dinner this is the place to come to! I came here for date night and it was a great choice! The service is the best, the waiters are attentive and there is always someone around to assist you! <br/><br/>Food: <br/><br/>We obviously had steak and it never disappointed. The only thing I didn't like was the peas but it's an old school thing and people like them i guess. Go through with the intention to splurge.

The best service😀 so warm and inviting. The best food and totally worth the money. I had the lamb and it was absolutely divine! Must make a booking
Shawn Belluigi
Absolutely phenomenal, our waiter was friendly, helpful and efficient. The food was amazing Jane had kudu fillet and the Springbok shank were perfect, I had the fillet on the bone. All perfectly done. The crepe dessert was extremely good and the finishing touch of wishing us a happy anniversary was brilliant. Thank you so much. Thank you for the roses on the table. Looked beautiful, thank you for providing a special end to a special day.

We Celebrated my Dads Birthday at wombles last weekend. The service here is absolutely phenomenal, the waiters are friendly, efficient and cannot do enough for you. The food is also very well prepared and tastes great. The menu is quite a nice mix of comfort food like rump, fillet and snitchel, and slightly out of the ordinary dishes like springbok and kudu shanks.. such a nice change to the everyday steakhouse meals. Great place to go if you are a fan of venison. Their rosewater ice cream is a must try for Turkish delight lovers. They also have a low carb sugar free banting desert option.
Mariangela
We came here as a group of around 20 for a work lunch. For a starter, I shared the calamari tubes which felt like a complete waste when they arrived. Although the calamari was cooked well and not rubbery, presentation was too simple and the 11 tubes were flavourless and not worth R110. My colleague had the King Prawn special and she said it was spicy and delicious – lots of jealousy on my side. I had the 350g rump with blue cheese sauce. It definitively filled me up and the side of potato wedges was also very generous. We however found space for dessert and I had the Pavlova. Fortunately Pavlova is not very popular as I did not have to share my delicious fruit, meringue and cream dessert. I tasted the Crepe Suzettes which had a rich orange flavour. The alcohol was a bit too much for me but it was a big hit at the table. I also tasted the Chocolate mousse which was smooth and light and tasted like dark chocolate. Service was something else – we were allocated a few waiters for our table and although they were well trained in certain respects, we constantly struggled to get their attention and get napkins, drinks etc.

This is my choice for a special occasion. I liked their restaurant in Parktown more but they've gone to a lot of trouble to keep the African safari vibe. Great wine list and excellent food. Service is top notch without being irritating. Book in advance and tell them when its a special occasion - they do the whole rose petal routine and candles in a cozy corner.

Really had high expectations for a great meal and ambience on a special birthday occasion. Sadly it didn't live up to it at all. <br/>Requested a window view and got placed on carpark :(<br/>Ordered signature dish times 4 (fillet on the bone) and honestly was below average. Lots of grizzle and meat had no flavour. Don't think we will be going back. No comparison to the days of Parkhurst. Very disappointed and could have spent money far better at a lesser 'known' restaurant!
Claire Frost
The decor and ambience can't be beaten - it really is beautiful. The service is excellent, and the owner is very astute and really pays huge attention to her guests' needs (quite remarkable).<br/>I have to say though the food needs work. The steaks need more delicacy when cooked (much better steaks elsewhere in Joburg). The quail were expertly deboned, but just so bland and unimaginative. <br/>Having said that, the spread of veggies were fresh, delicious and beautifully cooked. Stunning coffee and a VERY large bill.
Remé Harber
Had dinner at the "new" Wombles. Different location, newly decorated and amazing food! Had one of my best steaks ever! If you like Monkey-gland sauce, then you have to try theirs. They are pricey but definitely worth it!
Claudia Nel
Wombles... with its rich walls and tasteful finishing the restaurant makes you feel as though you are sitting in the bush. The fire pits and comfy couches help create an atmosphere of bush lodge luxury.<br/><br/>Friendly waiters, a good wine list and a variety of unusual dishes makes this a fantastic dinner with friends venue with something for everyone. <br/><br/>Don't forget to try the Rose ice cream for dessert.
Arun Babu
Quite average and well below the high expectation that we had going in to this place. Salmon lacked flavor and the steak was average. Cozy place and good service.
Anton De Klerk
What an absolute feast!  The service, quality and friendliness never seize to amaze, well done to the whole team at Wombles.  Definitely a gem worth taking your besties along and enjoy the whole experience. Compliments to the chef for always cooking your meat to perfection, great wine selection and just an awesome overall experience to make good memories.  There is a definite reason to always go back to Wombles!
Adrian Ziller
Top of the pops. Ambience is a little colonial, but great. A nice variety of options, all at a very high quality. Never been disappointed. Can't go wrong. (Unless your wallet is a little light)
Sachin Ram-Asary
Good overall ambience and great service but the food isn't really that impressive - not necessarily bad but I've had better steaks elsewhere (without the hefty price tag).

It's a pity that I only managed to get one photo but I came last night for my moms birthday dinner. We were a table of 20 and yet we have such good waiters, continually refilled our glasses and checked if we were okay. I absolutely love it when I don't have to constantly seek a waiters attention so I must say their service was impeccable... For starters I had grilled calamari which I think could have used slightly more of the lemon sauce but still good nonetheless... Then for main I had the duck leg confit which really exceeded my expectations. <br/><br/>Overall a really wonderful and warm experience. I'd recommend it for anyone !

I visited Wombles last night and I had an absolute blast. The legendary steakhouse certainly lived up to its own expectations.<br/><br/>Firstly the service was outstanding, all the staff were helpful and friendly in a way that made you feel a part of the Wombles family. They gave us enough time to look through the menue and starters and main courses came perfectly in time, without anyone waiting long.<br/><br/>Secondly, the food was stunning and delicious! I had a medium Sirloin Steak with mushroom sauce. The combo was so yummy I can almost re-taste it. Everyone at the table enjoyed their meal, including the ones that weren't steaks.<br/><br/>The reason I did not give the restaurant a 5 is because the oysters I had for starters were slightly disappointing as they were not as plump, bright and flavorful as I'm used to. But this is not to discredit the 5star worthy restaurant as this can be easily fixed!<br/><br/>I would suggest Wombles for celebrating a formal birthday dinner with loved ones. The colors in the restaurant suggest a serene environment and the mood and atmosphere is very sophisticated.<br/><br/>Thank you Wombles, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience!

I'm giving Wombles a 4/5 for ambience, decor and service which is all impeccable. <br/>The waiters are exceptionally well trained and attentive. <br/>The food on the other hand is rather average in my opinion. Not bad, but nothing exceptional for the prices they charge. <br/>I would rather spend my money at the Grillhouse.

The best steak house in Johannesburg! When I think steak I think wombles. Always beautifully prepared and melts as you cut into it. The service is exceptional and presentation is excellent! Their mashed potato is so smooth and creamy that it comes piped onto your plate! That's a winner for me! Bryanston is a little far out but wombles is worth the drive!

Wombles is an exquisite experience - I was very lucky to be taken here and not having to pay... the price is steep and I think they must only cater for tourists. The food was amazing, can't fault it. The waiters are pristine and a joy to have them serve you! I'm giving 4.5 because I think it's ridiculously expensive :)

The decor at this establishment is reminiscent of a Safari-esque Zimbabawe. The art is  notstalgic portraying exotic animals that have since become extinct. <br/><br/>The ambiance is warm and the staff are exceptionally attentive.<br/><br/>I ordered a pepper crusted fillet which was made to absolute perfection. The vegetables were generous and wonderfully fresh.<br/><br/>The wine list is superior and extensive. We were offered a decadent bottle of red wine which we drank right to the last drop.<br/><br/>A quiet gem in the heart of Bryanston, I look forward to my next visit!

I don't say this lightly, I had one of the best meals of my life at Wombles. I opted for the Wagu, on recommendation of the waiter, and it melted in my mouth. Overall experience everyone needs to do at least once. If my wallet can sustain it, I would eat here 5x a week. Management very involved, and it shows. Top top top class.

A bit on the down side as far as the ambience is concerned but what matters most is food + service. The two times I've been there, the servers have always had great knowledge about their food and are lovely and passionate. Great steaks and lovely mushrooms for starters. Would definitely recommend!

Had one of the specials for the evening which was a fillet on the bone with porcini mushrooms prepared in a red wine sauce. Along with the Thelema merlot was an absolute delicious dish. The portions are beyond generous. The staff are amazing. Very cosy place for a winter night. Perfect way to celebrate my birthday!

Wombles is very warm...in actual temperature and friendliness of staff. When I told the waiter that it was my friend's birthday they brought yellow rose petals for the table and later some vanilla ice cream in a hard caramel dome...nice touch. I went with the chefs special...fillet on the bone with porcini, red wine and marrow sauce...it was really good. I tasted some of my friend's blue cheese sauce and that was totally delicious...perfectly cheesy🤗 For dessert I had a really good creme brûlée...it came with berries which I could've done without 🙈🤣

A firm favourite restaurant for meat! My order most times would be fillet on bone served to perfection! To top off with a great wine selection. Decor is warm and African themed with dark heavy wood furniture.

We spend my hubby's birthday here. Service was excellent. From the time we entered all the staff that interacted with us wished him. We had a secluded 2 seat table with rose petals. For starters we shared the Bone Marrow dish. It's a rich delicious dish- if we did not share the portion it would have been too large and would have spoilt our appetite for the main. I had the lamb chops for main. It was well prepared. A good main but was not exceptional. My hubby had the prime rib with blues cheese sauce. Also well prepared. We finished with the chocolate mousse. While all the main meals were great it did not meet my 'wow' factor. My highlight was definitely the starter and great service.

A group celebration brought me to the Wombles Restaurant for my first visit.<br/><br/>The restaurant was well prepared for large groups. The service was excellent and the ambience for an afternoon quite busy and electric. <br/><br/>I ordered the Petit Poussin which was average at best as the chicken wasn't as tender as expected. The portion was seemingly smaller than expected based on the pricing. Nevertheless it was a satisfactory experience based on the customer service and ambience.

I loved the decor...so apt for a steak house. Wow and this restaurant is huge...perfect for an event. The service was excellent however the food was just good for me. For starters, I found the snails a little bland. The salmon for mains was fresh and done perfectly. The onion rings are a must try! Those that had the fillet on the bone raved about it. For dessert the rose ice cream in recommended. Don't have the chocolate mousse as this is quite average. Crepes Suzette are another good recommendation.

Love the new setting in Bryanston. Glad to see that nothing has changed ito food quality and service! Excellent steaks as well as good seafood options. Prawns a firm favourite. Career waiters makes this an upmarket night out!

After trying many times to get a reservation I finally got one on a Wednesday night and I was taking an overseas visitor. He really wanted to eat steak so I thought with their shining reviews the steaks would be tops and would beat the touristy places he'd eaten in before. What a disappointment. All 3 steaks (different types) were dry, and were cooked medium. The chips were the frozen type, tasteless and dry. Wine overpriced. However the service was excellent. I don't think we'll be back, to risk trying something different and thank goodness it wasn't for the special occasions I'd tried to book for previously.

After continuously hearing about this place, we decided to try it out. Service was great and we enjoyed the general feel and atmosphere. Food though was not great at all. I had the lamb shank that was obviously badly pre-cooked, with no salt at all. Meat was tasteless and just disappointing, the sauce was very much on the average side and didn't have a 'home cooked' taste, like the menu alluded to. My wife had a steak and didn't think too much of it. Also, all prices on the menu are excluding Vat, which I'm pretty sure isn't legal for a restaurant...

Disappointing evening , meal poor , steaks were full of sinew, service was below average and for a fine dining experience which we have always enjoyed , extremely disappointed . I believe this restaurant has now fallen into the commercial trap of turning seats and food standards dropping,- the prices unfortunately have not decreased - looks like a favorite special restaurant is being removed from the list of places to go for special events

Best steak available in Johannesburg and the homemade ice cream is spectacular. <br/><br/>Salads could use a little bit of work but otherwise the service and staff are perfect. Going to struggle finding a good steak after this! 5/5

After eagerly anticipating trying out the new Wombles, we finally made our way to Bryanston to try out the new venue: overall it was a mixed bag. It is beautifully decorated, very opulent and thematically, the Rhodesian nail has been hit square on the head. To start we shared a Caesar salad and chicken livers wrapped in bacon. The Caesar salad was poor, the lettuce wasn't Baby Gem or Cos Lettuce which usually accompanies Caesar Salad, but instead resembled offcuts of iceberg which comprised the nasty white, insipid bits near the core. Some of the chicken livers were decent, but some were raw and had the texture of congealed fat; we returned them and the manageress (or owner) promised to remove them off the bill (which she didn't but that was an honest mistake). Mains were excellent and everyone's food was cooked to perfection. The fillet on the bone special was truly special and it was easily devoured. The duck was flavourful and cooked well. I've always loved the old school side veggies that get served on a tray to the table, and they were scrumptious. The only main course that wasn't enjoyed entirely was the gammon steak which was quite a thick cut of pork and was medium rare/rare which we found odd for pork. For dessert we had the milk chocolate mousse which wasn't great, it was very sweet and not very chocolatey, and quite gelatinous and stiff. Service is impeccable and we couldn't fault anything, this is truly where Wombles shines, waiters work as a team and dining there is an absolute pleasure and a textbook example for all restaurants to follow. It is quite expensive overall, one thing that irked me was that they charge R28 for sparkling water prepared in house; I'm all for the ecological benefits of this but you can't charge bottled prices for prepared tap water, meet the customer half way. Overall, some dishes hit the mark, others missed it, service was impeccable and very comfortable, posh surroundings make for a pleasant, if somewhat expensive night that's best reserved for special occasions like birthdays or anniversaries. We'll be back, we always go back, but I always feel slightly let down and shortchanged.

The food wasn't perfect but the experience absolutely amazing! Why?<br/>Because we were greeted by all staff on the way into and when leaving the venue. Because the waiters were super professional; briefed us well; never interrupted our personal conversations; kept a sharp eye on us at a distance; and were extremely courteous but friendly. Because everyone that served us felt like one person without any need to repeat or correct. So....the evening was (weirdly but correctly) about our time together and not about the restaurant. Oh, and the food was fantastic too. Ps the rose water dessert is extremely repeatable (I.e worth revisiting)<br/>Thank you to the team at Wombles!

Been here when they were in Parkhurst and now in Bryanston. They never failed to disappoint. One of the best steakhouses in the country. The ambience is what makes this restaurant what it is. Feel like going to a bush for a steak, this is the place to go! It is on the expensive side but once in a while this place is worth it.

Simply said... Pure perfection! We decided to try Wombles-steakhouse for our anniversary, and after reading all the reviews, had high expectations. These expectations were satisfied in every aspect! Perfect service and I emphasise the perfect, you cannot get better service in JHB. The food is on a level which leaves you unable to stop, even though you know you should, absolutely delicious. <br/><br/>Well done to the owners and managers of Wombles-steakhouse you have the perfect recipe for a great evening's dining!

Hosting overseas colleagues, Wombles was a logical choice - a place showcasing great South African meat and ambiance. Being vegetarian was secondary, as it wasn't meant to be an experience for me, but for them rather.<br/><br/>However, I didn't expect such a disappointing meal as I was served . The "Vegetarian Platter" consisted of a plate of steamed and grilled vegetables, without the slightest flavour, sauce or seasoning. The mushrooms had very evidently been prepared on the same grill as the meat, which should be an obvious no-go for any chef preparing a specially-requested and not-on-the-menu, vegetarian meal. <br/><br/>I'm fully aware that Wombles is a steak restaurant, but expecting a little more than a plate of flavourless steamed vegetables, recommended by the waiter, is not too much to ask for, right?!

They got my online booking messed up but the recovery was good. They asked me to have drink outside on chill area while they prepared a table for 3. <br/><br/>Thereafter the experience was excellent. The service and attention to detail was impeccable. <br/><br/>Simple but quality menu with the steaks done perfectly to your choice. Got to have the desserts!
