Review The Victorian Secret - Benoni

Sharon du Toit
I need to get hold of Oxford to update their dictionary. I can not get the right word to describe this blissful nostalgic girly day my daughters and I had. Being a 25th birthday I decided on trying the high tea. And wow.... It was just .....(dictionary word needed) here! Due to food allergies, the pastry chef send us the most amazing and delicious tray of delights. Every bite was just out of this world. It was difficult to decide what I liked best but the lavender macaron won. This is perfect for those girls only dates and/or guys this is the perfect spot to impress the lady or ladies in your life. Do visit the little charity shop on the premises. Just to much wonders to describe about this gem. Go on, make a booking and go see for yourself.

Wonderful place. Great vibe about it . First time there and it was lovely . Went to wedding reception in the evening and it was outside and very nice . From the staff to the owner they were all very nice and helpful. The food out of this world . All finger foods . The coffe was delicious. I could not stop eating . Well done to everyone that was involved in putting all of this together. Will definitely come again soon . It's in Benoni but it's worth the drive. Thank you again.

Beautiful place. Great food. Dog friendly and they have Pup cakes and Donuts for dogs, made of unseasoned carrot cake, plain yogurt and crispy bacon pieces. Love them

Was there for a birthday. This hidden antique house is a jewel not to be missed. You experience the ambiance of the victorian era the moment you step into the garden and the house. The service and food is excellent. Great place for a special occasion or just a treat. Will definitely drive there from Pretoria again.

The place is absolutely stunning, it has the perfect vintage set up. The little bakery is just amazing, lovely desserts and friendly staff. The food is delicious. They also have a vegetarian option. The menu is slightly expensive but its worth it. The portions and taste of the food is divine. If you in the benoni area then you have to visit this coffee shop,

Beautiful vintage setting and food was delicious, with fresh bread baked at their bakery. They also offer a wide variety of gin. The Artisan bakery sells the most delicious macaroons and brownies

We had an birthday event in the Lavender Room. And it was soo special and they were very helpfull and very fast with the orders. They have unique views of the old masterpiece of a home. Very warm welcome and interesting history stories. The menu is very delicious and would recommend this as a party venue.

Found them at the Bedfordview Night Market and so happy I found them here so I can visit them again, Salted Caramel cake was amazing aswell at the shortbread, macaroons could've been a little lighter but flavour was on point, Thank you guys see you soon at the shop!

Definitely one of our favourite local destinations! Quiet, homely coffee shop in a beautiful setting, with a unique menu of delicious goodies. The staff are always friendly, and the attached Artisan Bakery and Patisserie is a must visit!

The Victorian Secret is undoubtably a hidden gem in the neighbourhood. The service is world class and the food promises to not disappoint. The quaint little bistro-like restaurant sets a unique ambiance of a time long gone. The bakery / confectionary sells the best Macaroons in town.
Debbie Rabie
What an awesome, quaint place. The scones were scrumptious, melt in your mouth, hot and fresh out of the oven. Would love to try other items on their menu. Everything looks delicious.
Wandré Grobler
Nice food and service, although a bit expensive. We have been multiple times and have not been let down once. Will definitely visit again.

Have been meaning to visit the Victorian Secret for quite a while, and I was pleased with the great food, service and hospitality. The food is of a high standard and is without doubt prepared with a lot of pride and passion, and is well presented. Interestingly the menu gives a nod to some famous individuals who have lived in Benoni 😊. The staff are professional and friendly and greeted some of the patrons like old friends. We sat outide in the garden under the tree, with beautiful house lending its character to a truly perfect setting. Awesome!
Erin Stuart
Such a lovely little spot with a beautiful garden. A peaceful and relaxing environment. The food is absolutely delicious, especially their baked goods. A great place for tea with something sweet, breakfast or lunch. The staff are friendly and the service is good. Would definitely recommend visiting, and trying their macaroons.
Maureen Kruger
Lovely tea garden and very nice atmosphere. Will definitely see me again. Only had coffee but confectionery goods looks devine.

We had a Zomato voucher for another restaurant just around the corner but when we arrived there, they had no power so couldn't serve brekkies. We then used Zomato to look for an alternative and ended up here. On arrival we discovered they have great secure parking inside their property. Very nice. Then, on arriving at the restaurant, you are greeted by a magnificent decades old Oak tree that spreads its branches over the entire outside seating area. It's breathtaking and affords an experience not seconded by any other restaurant I know of in Gauteng. We were greeted in a friendly and helpful manner and seated outside under that magnificent Oak tree by Kholwani. The owner Les came and chatted and made us feel welcome and at home. We then visited the on-site bakery that was laden with wares, freshly out the oven. The inside of the old house that was built in 1911, still has heavy wooden skirting and rails. Very very nice. I ordered The Queen Victoria breakfast. When it arrived it looked so inviting and delicious. A pleasure to the eye. The poached eggs were unfortunately a little hard for medium but the meal was absolutely yummy. It was a brilliant breakfast. So, so tasty. Definitely my new East Rand best breakfast. My wife had freshly, right out the oven, scones and jam and cream. The scone was one of the best I've eaten. Absolutely delicious. My daughter had an "Octopus". A cheese griller with chips. She wolfed it down. We ended off our breakfast with one of their "fine teas from China" and another scone, jam & cream. Yum yum yum. Overall we had a peaceful, relaxing and deliciously fantastic brekkie under that majestic old Oak tree. Excellent breakfast. We'll be back for more!!

I loved this venue. We had a friendly waitress that knew the menu.I would sincerely visit again and tell my friends and recommend this historic spot!

Luuuurv this place!! Ambiance is so lovely and the decor is exquisite.... The menu changes every now and then so you cant have the same thing twice, except the Queen Victoria which is just too epic to take away! The bakery is so delightful and strolling through the books for sale stand and the antique shop is a pleasant way of ending a lovely breakfast or brunch. I take my friends there often and have not been disappointed. Service is good.

What a stunning place this is!! I've celebrated my 21st with some close friends and family here over the weekend and everything from service up to the food was amazing. I couldn't have asked for anything better. I just want to thank Sarah for the lovely cake Would really recommend The Victorian Secret.

Had a delicious breakfast with Les and Sandy, their beautiful daughter Claire who is dating my son Struan, and my husband, Stewart.. It was a lovely happy get to gether. The food as usual was outstanding, beautifully presented and so different to the normal breakfasts. I highly recommend the Queen Victoria! Thank you Chantel for the yummy Macarons today... I'd planned to post a pretty pic, but unfortunately the were sooooo good they had all been eaten before my camera could snap a pic. The Blueberry and Cherry ones were so yummy, but the lemon really was a notch above the rest and then the strawberry balsamic was really the best flavoured Macaron I've had in a long time. What a lovely balance of flavours, well done!!!!

As always the food and customer service was exceptional .. Just miss the Banting cauliflower rosti which is no longer on the menu. Thanks for the good supply of marmalade and for going to fetch if there isn't any!

I cannot find words to describe how happy my family and I were with the service we got. We had a luncheon on the 27th May and what a blast we had. The food, deco and service was great. Sarah, Les and Noni wow wow and thank you. See you soon!!!!!???

Thank you so much Chantel for my amazing gluten free birthday cake. This was very special as my husband could enjoy this amazing cake with me on my 30th birthday. It was very tasty and all the different flavours made it an adventure in your mouth. You truly made my birthday a very special one. Thank you once again.

Went there for a baby shower very recently. This little place in Benoni, has a very relaxing environment with very friendly staff. The macaroons are really good, and very different and unusual flavors than we were not used too. and the breakfasts are homely.

In the area for post parkrun breakfast we decided to head to Victorian secret ,the premises is beautiful as well as interior .I had Queen Victoria but with mushrooms , enjoyed this meal . Service was good .

Hi I love Victorian Secret, but was disappointed with their scones the other day. They are smaller and not as light as they used to be. I also suggest that in order to minimize the plastic footprint they use bottled strawberry jam instead of the plastic individual ones. Thanks
Love the ambiance, friendly staff good food and a great place to have baby and bridal 🚿 had a very wonderful time there and really enjoyed their platters
Robyn Brown
Love the ambience and decor and friendly staff. The bakery next door is wonderful... The food is of high standard and beautifully presented. The coffee...that is the cherry on the top. Delicious
Keabetsoe Phello
The service was a bit sub optimal. Waitrons did not check on the meal, and waitress had to be found when things were needed. The food was scrumptious, and the hand made chips were a must. But I must talk about the bakery. 😀 so much to choose from. Each cake looking just as mouth watering as the next. Hope (waitress) was extremely friendly and very informative on the cakes. Make sure to take some for home.

Wife and I love this place. It’s our favourite breakfast nookie and just down the road which doesn’t help the cholesterol. Great cakes, great coffee and friendly staff. Thank you.
Let Them Eat Cake
Cute little place in Benoni. The food was tasty, and reasonably priced. But the winner for us was really the little bakery attached to it- such lovely little delicacies that we could pick and choose for the table... and take home too!!
Being winter when we went though, this place was quite cold... and we just couldn't get comfortable which ruined the outing.
Chanene Ablett
Great ambience but the scones are the star of the section. Good service. Friendly staff. Lovely place and will definitely be back again. Even my girls enjoy the place and there is no play area so another winner
VisZA
We recently took our daughter and a few of her friends out for a princess themed tea party/Breakfast at The Victorian Secret, they went out of their way to make sure the girls felt super special.

When looking faults we aren't able to come up with anything, from the strong, fresh cappuccinos, perfect macaroons and the breakfast stack made up of a homemade rosti stacked with bacon, rocket, poached eggs and hollandaise sauce, you cant go wrong by having a meal at this hidden gem in the middle of Benoni town. Decor, ambiance and service are all top notch

So charming!! The Victorian secret serves up delightful meals that are satisfying. The restaurant is located in an old Victorian house in Benoni. The outside dining area is sheltered by a large gracious tree which compliments the Victorian theme. We had "The Queen Mum" which had artisan bread with chive infused cream cheese, ribbons of fresh salmon, pickled beetroot and baby spinach leaves. It was a delectable combination. We also had the "Alo' Guvnor" breakfast which had two eggs, bacon, sausage, mushrooms and tomatoes. Simple but delicious! The Victorian secret also bake their own goodies.

We will definitely be back to try their delicious looking patisserie selection!!

Such a beautiful little spot in the heart of Benoni. Delicious food and great service. The atmosphere is just as nice! The setting is quaint and comfortable. Perfect place for a delicious breakfast or to celebrate a special occasion!

Had an absolutely wonderful experience here ! 👌🏼

Amazing food , great service and a lovely ambiance. Everything we ordered was delicious ! I have yet to try their pastries from their bakery just next door 🥐🍩

The Victorian atmosphere is pleasant and inviting, the food wasn't bad and the quality and preparation of the food are excellent just lacking in taste. The bakery would make me come back more and more. The food, ambience and service make it well worth it.

The venue is gorgeous and easy to find. There isn't enough parking though. I booked months in advance for mother's day and confirmed several times. When we got there we were still told our table is inside. We never sit inside. The food wasn't bad, but the portions was minute. My poor husband was still starving, definitely not worth the R195 per person. I will go there again if I am in the area, but not for a special day. The staff are friendly, but there wasn't enough of them for the busy day.
Chris Rafael
This little coffee shop nestled in the heart of Benoni town provides an incredibly high standard of baked goods. I do feel like that luxury comes a price I can't afford on a daily basis but more a treat once in a while. There food menu is comprehensive and well thought out. It's worth stopping in and enjoying a scone with some tea in the classic Victorian setting

Set in a magnificent old victorian house in the suburb of Western Extention in Benoni this quaint cafe/patisserie is definitely worth a visit. There are tables available outside under a grand old tree or inside by the fire if the weather is cold. The decor suits the setting and the ambience is relaxed and gives you a taste of a traditional french country cafe/patisserie.

The owner is hands on and will more than likely pop past your table to check on you. The staff are always friendly and the service is usually really good although you can wait a bit longer if its busy.

The menu has an option for everyone and it can be tricky to decide what you want because everything sounds delicious. For breakfast, I can recommend the 'The Queen Victoria' or the 'Alo Guv'nor! which if ordered with an accent will earn you an extra piece of bacon. If you're looking for something other than a breakfast I suggest the 'Croque Monsieur' (a sandwich) or 'The British Bulldog' (the burger) but by all means try anything it's all good. There are also options for the kids from their 'Little Peoples' menu.

The coffee is good and they have a good selection of tea if you are inclined to enjoy a good cuppa.

Don't forget to pop past the bakery on the way out for a little something (the macarons are delicious) for the drive home.

Love, love, love this special little place - not your average coffee shop / café!! I have only ever had good experiences here. The staff are super friendly & helpful & the menu offers something different (from breakfast to lunch). For breakfast try the Queen Victoria or the King George. The sandwiches (all of them) are also great!! The tea selection is good & the macaroons are out of this world - try as many flavours as you can. Also a really lovely little place to host a high tea.

...what a lovely hidden gem in the heart of Benoni, great food awesome service, already planning my return to another worthwhile meal, with flavors to sink into the palate...

We had lunch today at this truly lovely cafe. The outside eating area was really comfortable and we were able to smoke which was great -you can relax for hours. We brought our own wine and they brought glasses and a cork screw with no corkage fee! The food was well portioned and the flavors were truly to die for. Love the fact that we have these hidden gems in the heart of old Benoni, no need to travel to the north for great food.

The Victorian Secret is truly a well kept secret, hidden away in a suburb of Benoni. The food, ambience and service make it well worth the drive out to this town on the East Rand. The distinctive Victorian atmosphere is pleasant and inviting. Staff members are friendly, well strained and this makes for an overall pleasant experience. One has to compliment the kitchen on the quality and preparation of the food. The sandwiches are interesting and very pleasing to the taste buds. The chocolate brownies, especially, would make me come back. I can definitely recommend giving The Victorian Secret a try.

What a cute little restaurant! I had an amazing lunch here over the weekend enjoying the fresh air on a spring day! I ate the chicken pot pie which was delicious! My friend had a bacon and avo burger which she also raved about! There is a bakery on site with delicious looking treats and I tried some granadilla macaroons which were great! The service was friendly and the food is well priced! If you looking for a place with good food and outdoor seating then this is the place to go!
Michelle North
A lovely quaint little place. Breakfast took 2 hours because we were then tempted to try their desserts. Which didn't disappoint. Presentation was great. Food divine.

Had a ladies brunch with family this morning and had the most amazing first experience! Their flat bread dishes and chicken pot pie is absolutely divine!
Finished off by sharing a chocolate croissant, which was so yummy and decedent. Everything was beautifully presented. Such a great first impression and can't wait to take my hubby for a breakfast!

I think this place can fall under the hidden gem category. Very well done. Clean food. Friendly staff. Good croud also little hidden gem. The kids also love it
Candace Gloag
Cute little cafe to catch a coffee with a friend if you're in the area.
The bakery offers a great selection of pastries which vary on a day to day basis, so you'll never be short of new options to try.
Their menu is small but appetizing. Food is well presented but pricey and at times a little underwhelming.
Managers and staff are friendly and helpful but can be scarce.
Over all Victorian Secret is pleasant enough.
Laura Brewer
We stopped here after lunch for some coffee and cake and it was lovely. The rest of the menu looks quite limited but the confectionery we ordered was very nice. All plated very nicely, looked delicious and tasted just as great.
Micaela Rodrigues
The Victorian Secret is like a little getaway! Lovely scenery and the desert was wonderful. We had macaroons and a chocolate brownie. The macaroons were amazing and the brownie just melted in your mouth.

The service was also very good and our waiter even gave us some history of the house. Would definitely recommend for a girls day out.
Lliam
Really top class pastry chef. The macaroons are world class. I bought cupcakes for my sons birthday and was blown away by the taste the freshness and the quality
Saaleha Bhamjee
They get a few stars for trying. Have bought from the bakery a few times. Have even had coffee there. The food is okay.
The setting is pretty though. Was even used for matric party photo shoots. Nice little hideaway to escape routine.
Angie
Went here for a ladies lunch. The venue is beautiful, old vintage vibes with British humor on the menus and classic interior aesthetic. The exterior seating looks so inviting, and next time we go, we will try that.
The service was terribly slow, we waited about 1& 1/2 hours for our food to arrive and all meals came staggered, which is not pleasant when dining in a large group.
That said we were all famished by the time the food came, hence no food pics, but the food was very good! Each lady enjoyed their meal and the overall consensus is that we would come back, but not if we were in a hurry to eat.

The quirky menu item "Alo Guv'nor"! actually comes with extra bacon if you order with an accent, which is hilarious! :)
They also a fresh bakery, so make sure to pop past before you pay the bill to take some freshly baked goodies home to enjoy later. The smell from the bakery is so divine and the macaroons were a hit!

Will recommend for a romantic date where you can be left alone and spend the afternoon nibbling on freshly baked goods from the main menu & bakery!

So this is the second time I've decided to experience the,"Garden"...so the ambience and atmosphere has been tweaked slightly with a couple of new faces running around, however I really do enjoy the fact that I can put what's on my plate in a box for the "people" at Home x6. Nothing beats a decent pastry and cup of Chamomile tea...and company ofcourse!!! It's perfect both inside and outside, call in advance if it's a larger group, trust me.#benonivibes
Truth
After a long wait, I finally had the opportunity to visit to the much raved about Victorian Secret. I was highly disappointed! It started with us waiting at the sign "please wait to be seated" while nobody came to greet us and show us to a seat. After a while we decided to just walk in and have a seat. After waving down a waiter we again waited a few minutes for a dirty, brown menu. Everything had to have a few minutes added as everything took so long. We finally managed to order "the best cappuccino in Benoni" which to me and my family was just heated milk with a drop of espresso, no complaints as everyone prefers their coffee differently. Again we waited to order our meal. Firstly I need to say, the menu was so busy - full of useless information about the meals - almost confusing! I just wanted to take out my highlighter to highlight the dish names. I've studied menu planning and now I know what the chefs are trying to say about the busyness of a menu. We ordered the Croque Monsieur and The Downton Abbey for lunch. When we received it, wow it looked so good! Until we took a bite of the Croque Monsieur and realized it was just two pieces of bread filled with Parma ham and drenched in cheesy béchamel sauce served with some onion marmalade. The marmalade was tasty and the sauce was good but I could've made it and I have before so nothing to excite me. The others had The Downton Abbey, it was served on a wooden board (eww), some of the chips were burnt and the others had way to much salt and to top it off the oil was almost running off the board. The sandwich, they all said was okay but nothing special - a normal eat with a knife and fork kind of sandwich. By the time we were finished I just wanted to go but they all insisted we go check out this amazing bakery. Bakery??? Wow. The interns were rude, standing with their arms folded waiting for you to order something with the one standing with one foot against the wall. I understand that their feet are sore and are tired but not once would I ever think of doing something like that myself. I ended up ordering the cheese cake, wow! The base of the cheesecake was soggy (way too much butter added) almost giving it a oily, fried taste. I'm not sure when they do their baking but you could taste it was old as the filling almost tasted sour. The fresh fruit toppings were all dry and dehydrated so that was proof that was not as fresh as preferred. I'm not impressed at all and actually disgusted! The pastry chef was supposed to have studied in Australia and worked under my idol Adriano Zumbo, and she creates products like that?? Maybe it wasn't her doing, maybe it was the interns that made the desserts. I'm not sure but I will never go there again and I'll ensure none of my friends and family visit as it was very expensive for the outcome! Maybe you have better luck so try it if you want but I'm not recommending it.

I blame my sweet tooth for the regular trips I take to The Victorian Secret 🙊

Catch ups with school friends, indulgence in macarons, lemon meringue, delectable cake and dark chocolate romany creams never end badly 💕🎂

Always a great experience 👍
Bradley Lutz
I love this place! A regular breakfast haunt for me. Sit indoors in winter near a welcoming fire, or outdoors in the warmer weather. Order the 'Allo Guvnor or - my favourite - a croissant with two poached eggs on a bed of avo topped with hollandaise sauce. Fun menu as well with humorous East Rand references.

I scanned through the reviews posted on the The Victorian Secret and had a complete different experience. I personally loved the menu and the layout. Yes not a big variety however each dish presented perfectly and clasy. The bakery is amazing with freshly baked cakes tarts and other sweets. I am sure that this little place is not in the tastebud of the average "Spur lover" however I like different and non mainstream shops. Loved it. Take mom she will love it
Jacquelise
Hosted a 60th birthday party here recently. The high tea menu is beautifully presented and very filling. A lovely variety of sweet and savory. The service was excellent. On a normal day out - the menu is limited but the food is absolutely divine. Les and Chantel went out of their ways to make our experience memorable.
Tamarin Temblett
Oh my word Where I begin Food on restaurant side is really good and the cake and pastry shop next door is to die for Awesome ambience and lovely decor
Walter Pike
Not that good at all. Breakfast menu limited. But what isn't great is that the food was cold and the kitchen couldn't get the egg order correct.
Michelle Rocke
Lovely little spot for coffee and a treat, delicious variety of baked goods with no sugar/flour options also available. Cappuccino was really good, was was the Victorian sponge
The Food Musketeer
I went here a while ago. Not sure if it's changed much. Very limited breakfast menu so it was disappointing to have a birthday breakfast. They made a huge hype about the bakery which also didnt have much except fig and brie which isnt for everyone's taste buds sadly
Rachel Dunne
They sell the best pie I have ever had! Very unique with its savoury scone topping! A very nice place to visit for a nice relaxing and time out.
