Review The Hollow Tree - Bellville

We were there a few weekends ago and it was a really nice experience. There was quiz night on while we were there so it was quite busy at the time. Firstly the waiter was either new or didn't know what was going on, because he was missing 60% of the time or we had to repeat our order several times. When we did get our drinks and food was really really nice. I would recommend most things on the menu although I have not tested everything. Parking is fine but not to organised.

These pizzas deserve a gooooood 10/10. Thin supeereeee crunchy crust that keeps it's shape when you pick it up so your toppings won't fall off. Amaaaaaazing bite sized toppings so that every bite has a bit of everything. The ribs was also super soft and tasty! Nachos also packed with flavour! Amazing place if looking for good chilled vibes and amazing food! Highly recommend!

A very enjoyable experience. First time to visit and enjoyed the experience. Excellent food choice and good food. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Will definitely go again.

In a world where you can use AI to write posts, 1000 words long, let's keep it short and sweet. The two of us went for breakfast, and the breakfast special was R54 per person, including filter coffee (please check the attached menu). The total cost for the entire breakfast with drinks was R108. I my book that was great for the experience. (Prices were for year 2023, you future stalkers.) The service was quick, the staff was friendly, and there was more than enough parking available.

Love the place, first visit was with my staff end of year party. Went back two weeks later for my birthday because I likes it so much. The staff is attentive even when the place is packed to capacity. Food is top tier. They've also got the excellent drinks specials. The outside seating area is awesome for sundowners on a summer evening. During my second visit they had loadshedding but this didn't affect their ability to take breakfast orders for food or coffees. I'll definitely be back.

Great old style pub atmosphere with a large outdoor area mostly undercover with a roaring fire as well. Far removed from the usual trendy chain restaurants in atmosphere. Food is great pub style food ... hearty, well prepared and substantial. I had bratwurst whi h was two sausages, sauerkraut, rosti potatoes and onions with a good dollop of German mustard. Highly recommended!

Delicious food. Good service. Great atmosphere.

This was our first visit and we enjoyed it. They have a good menu with affordable food options. They serve hughe portion sizes. It is very tasty and they offer a quick and friendly service. A bottle of wine from R100.

We had lunch and sat outside under the trees. Food and service were tops.

Went here with a couple of friends on a quiet rainy day. Inside was actually warm and cozy. Staff were really friendly and attentive. The food was amazing and the portions were great. We started off with a platter of wings, ribs and jalapeno poppers. Followed by Sirloin steak, chicken strips and calamari. Lastly a Guinness infused cheese cake with ice cream. While I didnt experience the bar and beer side of this place, I had a good experience.

Sunday lunch with my family. This place is such a gem. We enjoyed our food and the vibe. Kids could play in the cute play area with wooden jungle gyms, service was friendly and very professional. We had been told the lemon meringue was made in house, but after tasting it soon realized that was not the case, our waitress was awesome and went to check with the kitchen manager who then advised it was store bought and that they were going to start baking fresh desserts at the time. The transparency was really commendable and not even that little experience could have spoiled our time there. The pizzas were delicious, had the pork taco as well, very very tasty. The wings were nice too. Prices are affordable and the lunch specials are worth it. Definitely a new family favourite. The menu has great variety and the vibe is lively but still chilled. Summer game day hangout place!

Super friendly staff, great atmosphere, no music and no noise, can chat relax and enjoy your time there. Love the outdoor seating under the trees. Food was great and a good price. Thanks for all.

Hollow Tree Old Oak has always been a favourite place of mine. It's calm, and serene atmosphere is the cherry on top of an already ridiculously good menu. Set in a tucked away piece of land, in an old farm styled home - the interior decor gives you a cosy and warm feel. Staff are friendly and attentive, while the food is just plain delicious.

Decent outside area and some craft beers. For the not so hungry try their baskets. Also a great Sunday lunch <br/>

Food is great but service is non existent, after our third visit with zero improvement we are disappointed and definitely will never return again. I don't suggest coming here unless you want to sit at the bar which is the only place you will get service.

Ordered the Hawaiian Pizza and my Boyfriend had the Pulled pork sandwich.<br/>Both dishes had no flavour. My pizza came served on a severely cut up and over used wooden board of which the flavors from whatever has been on the wood before drew into my pizza. The base was cardboard like and not properly cooked.<br/>My boyfriends "pulled" pork sandwich was not pulled and tasted like cold refrigerated pork. The waitress also took the sauces on our table away before I was done eating to give to another table and I was actually using them to atleast give my food some taste.<br/>Overall not a good eating experience, generally nice vibe but the food was not even close to satisfactory.

Really nice atmosphere in the evening. Food is good, i would recommend the nachos. Their beers are greatly priced, as is most of their drinks. Really and cool chilled laid back place

Ordered a plain burger with fries off Mr Delivery. Arrived super fast and still warm. <br/><br/>The burger patty is made with good beef and reminded me of those old school Spur burgers from back in the 90s. Slightly dry, slightly charred and basted with loads of BBQ sauce. Luckily this is right up my alley, so I liked it. These burgers are definitely more than a 3 score, but not quite a 4. <br/><br/>

I went here on quiz night. We were sat outside and it was a pleasant evening. <br/>The quiz was great. I ordered a weiss beer and it tasted sour/metalic for some reason. <br/>I also had pork tacos and unfortunately the portion size was very small, for a main meal. <br/>Finally, the waiter that we had wasn't great and didn't seem interested/familiar with the specials. <br/><br/>I'll be back for the quizz. I hope the food and service steps up though

This place was excellent when it was still called Kriges pub, after the take over the service went backwards, except for the waiters all being foreigners, the place only has one toilet to cover all there female customers, which is dirty, all the toilet rolls are pushed in at the side of the toiled, the floor has not seen water for at least a week, no tap that is working, totally broken out and just hanging, or hand sanitizer or note to indicate water restrictions, no toilet holder for extra toilet paper and no tissues to clean hands with as there is no water, the food was not that bad, but it did take a while to arrive, the waiter was also missing for every long periods, since the menu has changed, we could not find any chicken meals and were did the nice farmer foods go, the bobotie, etc, only a selection of three or four hamburgers and some other odds, no fish meals either, there was no salad on the plate like you used to get and do get at any other restaurant. My friends parents from overseas use to love this restaurant and there overseas money will not be spend in this place again, sorry, but even if you tell me to contact you, you will not see us again. We are already searching for new places to visit in future

As a regular customer I today came to one of my favourite establishments. I was looking forward to having a good meal. I was informed that, since they are running a St. Patrick's day promotion, I could not order from the regular menu. As my photo testifies, none in our party was there for St. Patrick's day celebration, merely to have a meal. As such, I am offended by management's refusal to accomodate regular customers, not interested in partaking in their promotion. If this is their idea of cusromer service, I would strongly reccommend no one ever visit this establishment. I certainly will not.

Great ambiance for a relaxed pub lunch or dinner, service can be a little bit slow when they’re busy, but I’ve been a bunch of times and the staff are always friendly and work hard. Most of the food is great, the nachos are average though.

Really yummy food and super nice place to go for a couple of drinks with friends after a long day! Highly recommend. Not too expensive either!
Gabi
Been here a few times and unfortunately the visits have gone from good to dismal. Today the service was so slow that after 40 minutes our food had still not arrived so we cancelled the order. Waitress response was that manager couldn't give more details and it was the pie we had ordered causing delay. Bollocks, a pie that takes over 40 min ?? It's a pity, as we used to like coming here especially in summer with their beer garden.

We always go to the Hollow Tree for a nice breer and their awesome pub lunch chicken strips, which is ao cheap! Love the vibe and also a relaxed atmosphere

It's a fairly priced restaurant that serves traditional meet dishes with typical mashed potatoes and veggies. The position makes it perfect for a stop on the way to do shopping in the area. Parking is easy and free. What I like is the feeling of home made food. Eating there feels like grandma is in the kitchen.
Abigail Potgieter
Great spot for catching up with friends over a few drinks. Their chicken strips and cheese sauce are divine! I've been there during the day and during the evening and both times there was a great vibe.
Ohmyfoodie
Went there for lunch and breakfast a few times and I was very impressed with great food and even better. food. Then I decided the other day to go for drinks at the bar, I was disappointed in the manner the barman was talking to us. Not friendly at all! We ended up leaving after one drink because of his vibe. Wil be back for the food but not for a drink at the bar.

Wonderful birthday evening, yummy food, nice wine and the kids loved the play area. Service was excellent with friendly and helpful staff making in a stress free pleasure.

Love this place :) Staff are chilled and friendly :) The menu is simple yet extremely tasty :) I like their tapas selection! Great ambience in the evenings especially :D

Service was bad. The staff was busy changing shifts and the waiters leaving didnt want to pick up a new table and the evening waiters hadnt started yet. The food took a long time to come and when it did it was cold??? We had ordered a burger and nachos. The nachos tasted horrible - the chips were soggy and it had something on the dish tasted like it had gone bad. Sent the nachos back. Left feeling ripped off and disappointed.<br/><br/>Update: went back again for a friend's birthday. The service was good and their food was also enjoyable. Had their Sriracha chicken and bacon pizza, which I'd definitely recommend.

My girlfriend and I decided to have dinner and drinks at The Hollow Tree which is just around the corner from where we stay. We both ordered a Long Island Ice Tea which was a pathetic excuse of a cocktail.... tasted like a watered down flat coke which cost us R130. She order an avo and bacon burger whi h still had the skin on the avo. After that we ordered 2 Dom Pedros which again was basically ice cream with out any alcohol in it. When we approached our waiter Paul, after waiting for him for 20min to come back to our table as he was making small talk to the people at the bar, we discussed the issues we had but did not even pay attention to us whatsoever. The service was really bad as well as our orders. Not seeing us again.

This used to be one of my fav spots in the northern suburbs. Well set out menu, comfortable setting etc. This would be my 4th time in a row where I walk out disappointed. Every time I come back because I am loyal to this place. Service has gone backwards, food quality even more so. What you order is never what you get. Average waiting time for n coffee or beer (not during peak times I should add) is 30-40min. Overflow of waiters standjng around and hungry customers looking confused. So so disappointed in what used to be "home"

Home style cooking, nice outside area and reasonably priced. I had the nachos here and the were tasty and the beers were cold. That is all I want in the end of the day. Give it a go, the burgers looked great.

I had no idea this place was here. Stopped here on a Saturday afternoon for a couple of cold froffies (that's Beer is Oz speak) and a spot of lunch. Built out of an old house The Hollow Tree gives out a great pub vibe where you can bring the kids and the parents can enjoy a day out as well. <br/><br/>For the food my old mate had chicken strips and I opted for the Pork Belly roll. Both for R60 a plate is fantastic value. Both plates hit the spot and were tasty. No complaints for great pub food. <br/><br/>Service is good. As we were around the side of the building we were not in the general eye of wait staff but they were always checking up on us and providing more cold froffies. <br/><br/>Place is popular with locals and I can see why. Good spot during the day or the night. <br/><br/>Parking is a bit rustic but that's not a negative in my books.

A place in the north with a pub quiz, yeah!<br/><br/>I was so happy to find out that I don't have to travel to the CBD to get my quiz on, so I immediately organised a night out with my fellow pub quiz fans.<br/><br/>We had a good time; Hollow Tree is a nice open space, with many different seating options, depending on the atmosphere you’re after. It can be a family restaurant or a pub, which is great.<br/><br/>I didn’t eat anything, but they had great beer specials on, which was more than enough to keep me happy. They unfortunately didn’t stock all the craft beer on their menu, but they had some of the main, more well-known ones available.<br/><br/>My friends ordered the chicken strips and chips, as well as one of the Haute Dogs (nice pun by the way). And it was very reasonably priced and apparently delicious.<br/><br/>The quiz turned out to be way out of our league, but we had a good time! It’s the ideal place to meet up with friends for a fun time and pub grub.

Perfect vibe and place for the men to watch their rugby, have a good meal and some beer!! Generous portions of food, always yummy!

I was really not impressed with The Hollow Tree (Old Oak Road). The service was incredibly poor! Waited ages for everything, and it was not full at all! Had the lunch special, which was decent. Burger and chips was basic; chicken schnitzel was juicy and tender; calamari and chips was tasty; alfredo pasta was quite delicious. And R18 draught beers will always be a winner. I was a bit disappointed in the overall outing, tho.

The Hollow Tree is the perfect place for any occasion. Whether you want to watch the rugby, have a beer with your mates, take your parents out to lunch or celebrate gran's 80th. Good set-up, awesome food and great value for money. Service is also good. Their R50 lunch special is excellent value for money!! Will definitely go there again!

Amazing venue, but the service left a lot to be desired... I was in a hurry and asked the waiter how long the food will take and he promised it will be quick... I had to to take a take away and the whole table was served before me. When I at the lamb wrap it was ridden with chunky raw garlic and had rocket that I would never serve to anything but my bin. Very dissapointed as this is such a beautiful place.

Lovely Pub. Very busy on a Friday night with live music. Had a Eisbein that was to die for. Very generous portions. Really enjoyed this place and will definitely be back

Amazing food and friendly service from the staff members from Hollow Tree on Oak Road.<br/><br/>We ordered a platter with a wide variety of options. Good value for money.<br/><br/>Will definitely pay Hollow Tree a visit again.

Great food, the venison pie with mash was good, but complemented with their mild peri-peri sauce became excellent. The service was quick and friendly, a good spot to sit outdoor under the shade and have lunch.

I have probably driven past this place a thousand times but only decided to go today for the first time. It has a bit of a pubby vibe but I quite like it. Sat at a table outside on a nice warm evening.<br/><br/>I ordered a soft drink and the wife had a cocktail. Looking at the menu the food is very reasonably priced. Whilst not gourmet it has all of our favourites and large selection of starters. <br/><br/>We ordered starter wings (to share), wife had the smoked salmon and mushroom pasta and I ordered the venison shank. Unfortunately after a bit of a wait the manager came to inform us that the shank wasn't cooking soft and he wasn't happy to serve it. I was disappointed but happy that he was upholding standards. So due to time constraints I ended up eating just the starter wings and stole some of wife's pasta. <br/><br/>The wings were honestly some of the best I have ever had, and they are served with chips. The pasta was really delicious as well and a bargain at 65 rand. The table next to us ordered an eisbein which looked really good and is only 100 rand on the menu. <br/><br/>I have a feeling this place will become a regular spot for us as they are reasonably priced, family friendly and food so far is good.<br/><br/>There was a band as well and the place was quite full. Service could do with slight improvement.

Food was great, but the service a little slow. I think their bar gets overrun a little. That said, the atmosphere is great. You can't get outside seating under the HUGE Oak tree outside after 15:00 on a Friday.

The place is amazing. Service is fair<br/> But food was amazing. Nice day for family outing or even a Friday afternoon with friends. And great value for money. I will be back soon. <br/>

We tried the Babotie and Ox Tail preparations here, which are very 'Afrikaans'! We tried them for the first time so won't be as good a judge as an Afrikaans local but we loved our dishes. The service was good too. <br/>It's on the main road with enough parking space. Didn't think too much of the ambience.
Selina Joy Smit
We came for the R55 ribs special which was well worth it. Service was good, food arrived quickly and the ribs were more than enough. We were seated at a lovely table close to the fireplace which was very welcome since it was a cold day. Definitely worth another visit.

Nice cozy atmosphere and normal friendly greeting by waiter ..<br/><br/>Ordered 500 gr rump medium rare ... was a good big portion BUT TOUGH. Probably the toughest steak I've eaten for a very long time ..<br/><br/>Upon arrival of the food only got chips with the steak .. queried the waiter .. tells me it only comes with chips. I asked the menu and showed him it says chips and veggies .. his response it's chips OR veggies .. showed him it says chips AND veggies ...<br/><br/>He went to speak to the manager upon which the veggies arrived ...<br/><br/>DISAPPOINTING!!
Peet Langeveldt
Nice place to have a beer in summer.<br/>Food way below par. (This seems to be a norm with a watering hole).<br/>Had their "Hollow tree burger" - driest burger I've had in my life. Will still go there on a sunny day for a beer but eat elsewhere.
Jana Lorraine Pretorius
Great place for casual drinks or a laid back meal with friends. Although they offer a lot of typical pub grub, many of the menu items have a surprising home-cooked feel about them (especially the bredies, curries etc). Also generally very cost-effective and there are usually good specials on offer.
Lindsay
Simple, easy fuss free food both affordable and tasty. Great atmosphere for a quick bite or an evening of kuiering. Big plus that they're also kid friendly.
Kyle Cockcroft
Simple food done right, we come here for burgers and breakfast. Service is good and food delicious. Be sure to buy some of their sweet chilli mayo and Portuguese sauce for home, it's great on everything.
James Campbell
We went for breakfast because it was rated in the top 10 places for Kids in Cape Town. It's not that great for kids so don't be fooled. Breakfast was ok/good and service was also ok/good but its more of a place to have a "joll" than take you kids for a family meal.
Alex Spero
Nice atmosphere, reminds me a bit of Forrester's in Newlands. Good for drinks but don't be too adventurous if you're ordering food. Burgers are very average. Service is pretty consistent too.
Jacques Kotze
We had great service, the atmosphere was very nice and the burgers weren't bad. Also the drinks was not to expensive!<br/>
SvN_lovedining
We have been here a few times now but it was for drinks only.<br/><br/>With the warm weather we enjoyed this week, we decided to dine outside. The fairy lights is beautiful in the evening but outside it is still a pub feeling.<br/><br/>The service is slow - so when you want to visit you need to have time to just chill and chat with friends.<br/><br/>The food is great quality for the price - they are reasonable for the portion you get. I ordered the seared steak salad - I was weary at first because didn't know how their salads are. Yes, as always too much lettuce with limited cucumber and tomatoes, but the meat portion was big - probably about 100g. Hubby enjoyed the chicken snitchzel - which for R75 was a big portion - 2 chicken breasts with chips.<br/><br/>The Dom Pedro's is very thick - we could eat it with the straw - just had to wait for it to melt a bit, but very yummy for R22.
