Review Chevy Lane - Bedfordview

Experience : Look and feel is amazing. You almost feel like you're in an American diner somewhere in Texas. The kids play area is an absolute winner. They literally play themselves to sleep. Food : Absolutely amazing, well priced and decent sized portions. One might find it slightly pricey if you comparing to the everyday local restaurants but this is proper food for the soul. No plastic or cardboard here. Staff : Once again absolutely amazing. Always warm and friendly. The kids get special attention in the play area which is amazing. You are very much acknowledged from when u walk in to when you leave. I would suggest this to anyone who wants a completely different experience. Well done Chevy Lane. Officially my new favourite!

Wow, wow, wow... This restaurant really exceeded our expectations!!! We were very impressed with the ambiance and theme created throughout the restaurant. This restaurant really caters for all ages and especially those who love timeless cars and vintage experiences. It's extremely child friendly with a lovely playarea and big TV screens showing the live play area activities while you enjoy your meal. The menu has a variety of options to choose from, that will cater to each family members needs. It is great for birthdays and parties. It is definitely a destination spot for those new to Johannesburg or even for those living in Johannesburg and surroundings. We can wait to come back and to bring friends and family. Thanks again for a lovely experience @Chevy Lane. Oh and I left the best for last.... We even got to eat in a real car. That was definitely the highlight of our supper!! Please be so kind to like this review, if you found it helpful. Thanks.

Awesome place, great food. The kids play area is an absolute hit, cant get them out of there. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and it feels like your are stepping back in time. Will definitely go back need to try all the yummy food and desserts.

It's a fun funky place with such interesting decor, you will want to walk through the whole place to see everything! They have a wide menu selection and drinks list. The food was tasty and the monster bigger was BIG! Best of all is we ate inside a Cadillac! They offer free Wi-Fi. There is also loads for kids to do! Overall a lovely experience at this American themed dinner! Truly a must see.

Very cool place to visit. Absolutely loved the atmosphere and the decor. Place is well kept and clean. Menu is great, milkshakes were good. Music is enjoyable as it suits the decor perfectly. It really feels like you've traveled somewhere else for a short while. I definitely recommend it to anyone looking for something a little different. They also have a selection of imported sodas and soft drinks.

Absolutely amazing restaurant! Has an electric energy different to any other. American vibe 80's themed with an incredible selection. Takes 10 minutes to even read the menu. Pizzas, pastas, burgers, steaks, unbelievable starters, freakshakes.. everything 🖤 My recommendation: Bronx Burger, Watermelon & Mint Gin and a freakshake of your choice ♥️ 10/10 ! New favourite restaurant

If you enjoy a loud and busy yet colourful vibe, where everyone is accommodated. Then this is the place for you. You can book a table in advance for birthday parties. There is easily accessible toilets for wheel chairs. A huge play area for the little one's and play station for the slightly older child. The food is good but can be a bit pricey. You might wait a while for your good as they are very busy.

Funky diner decor and some really nice motorcycles on display. The American-style menu and food is good and the service is friendly. The win for me (especially when my wife is away) is that there is a great, well-monitored indoor play area for my 3 hooligans to burn off lots of energy and make new friends! Great family spot but still with areas for you and some friends to have a meal a bit further away from the (very active and sometimes loud) play area ;-). Probably not the first choice for a romantic dinner date, unless you're nostalgic, but great for a family or mates get-together.

Great food with generous portions - they offer a wide selection of American style food and over the top desserts for those with a sweet tooth. Higher end pricing but the portions make up for it. Would definitely recommend if you have kids as they are family oriented

Amazing food, great service. Nice place to take kids and for parties.

Food was excellent: pizza, Burger, chic wings, American schnitzel. Patience was an ideal waitress and loved the atmosphere. Restaurant deserves 5*, however I am unable to understand how they want to charge R25-00 for a tot of Old Brown Sherry. A full bottle costs R40-00 at the store so is even cheaper than wine.

Will give it a 4 for the brilliant interior and excellent kids area. Food, however, isn’t anything special. And yes, the service could be better but hopefully this will come with time...everyone still new there))

Went there in Dec with my son. Absolutely loved it! Indoor play area with screens up so you can see your kids. Also have child minders. Staff very friendly. Food was great. Will definitely visit again.

Have now been there twice and I have to agree with Zomato ratings currently at 2.6 Food is excellent but service is appalling to say the least. Bathrooms and floors could use a more frequent clean up and glasses a better wash. Play area is good for younger kids and offers a variety of amusing activities. Whilst a bit on the pricey side you are paying for a dining experience set in Hollywood Golden Age with 100% authenticity. The food is really good and is delivered quickly, yet bad service can bring a good restaurant to its knees very quickly. If this aspect can be corrected it could be one of JHB best family restaurants and I hope management take the time to do just that.

For our first real visit, here I must say that things are looking up and the burgers were in fact quite good. I was quite with the service is good.

We had a wonderful time at the restaurant. The decor and vibe was great. I ordered the espetada which was great.
Pity about all negative reviews. We did not have those experiences but the restaurant was not too busy for a Saturday evening. I would like to think that management have upped their game as clearly a lot of money was invested in this establishment - would be sad to see it fail.

Came into the restaurant and asked for a table for 4, the lady at the front asked us to take a seat in the front waiting area which we obliged, and then she walked off.... no estimated waiting time or anything more. 5 mins or so later the women walked past us a few times without saying a word.

We got up and left.

I have no issue with waiting to be seated at a busy restaurant, I do have an issue with a lack of communication while being expected to wait.

The Over the top and extravagant decor is very appealing. It’s a wonderful restaurant for families with children wanting to spend an evening out, however we found the menu to be overwhelming and food to be average.

Reasonable environment and reasonable service.
Excellent entertainement are for kids
Very poor food, if was not for kiddies area would not be worth going there.
Pricey

Went to this place with my kids. They had a lot of fun. But the food was just Ok. I order one of their Baguette Sandwiches and it came on a Footlong Roll (yeah, like Sausage Saloon). Send it back as I requested Baguette bread, but then it just came out the same and they apologized as the baguettes were not good.
I will give them another try, another time. Let's see if next time is better.

What a terrible experience! This review unfortunately cannot convey the magnitude of the anger and disgust I have towards this pathetic establishment. The focus of my review isn’t actually orientated on Chevy Lane’s food (which is greasy, underwhelming and overpriced for the quality by the way) but rather the childcare - or lack therof. We decided to come to Chevy lane only because of it’s “great” play facilities for children. With childminders and video surveillance reflected on TV screens in the restaurant, one has a false sense of security that it’s a suitable place for your child to play. Needless to say, this cannot be farther from the truth. We had placed our 2-and-a-half year old son within the gated play area and had come to sit down at our table. After placing our order we looked on the TV screens to locate our son in the play area. He was nowhere to be seen! Panicking, my husband, brother-in-law and I rushed to look for my son. After seeing that he wasn’t in the play area, we luckily found him wandering OUTSIDE the restaurant entrance in tears! He had come out the play area himself! There is no sign-in-sign-out system where only parents or guardians can place or remove a child from the play area - children come and go as they please! What is worse though, that upon asking the childminder at the entrance of the play area if she had seen our son, she replied that she did not open the gate for any child fitting that description - but stated flippantly that sometimes children just wriggle through a gap in the play area fence! A known security defect mentioned with such non-chalance - simply unacceptable. We luckily found my son but other parents may not be so lucky. If you fancy keeping your child safe and alive, please do not pay a visit to this disappointing establishment - I know that we never will again. It is difficult to comprehend the magnitude of such blatant negligence: there are many things replaceable in this world - a child isn’t one of them.

Its tragic to see so much potential go to waste. You walk into the restaurant with high hopes because the decor is elaborate—hoods of old fashioned cars, pictures of American cities from the golden years, records, Americana. You look at the menu and its got something for everyone— vegetarians, pescatarians, meat eaters etc. the booths and seats are comfortable. The location is central. There is a big area with jungle gyms for kids to pkay on and its supervised. The service—-we found it good unlike other reviewers but maybe we got a particularly good waiter. I mean the place has everything laid on and all the resources to earn a solid five and then——the food comes out and it is well, tasteless. No tomato sauce on the pizza and the base is doughy. Order a chili dog—-no chili con carne on it just a tiny bit of chilis and some cheese—- even the promised mustard isn’t in evidence. This is NOT the promised classic Americana cuisine that they promise—-not at all. Moreover people on Zomato and Facebook have been complaining for months and clearly the restaurant is paying no heed. I don’t like giving such a low score when they’ve put so much effort into the place’s setup. But what’s the point when the food is so bad—-and yes it is that bad.

The most extravagant decor I’ve ever seen in a restaurant, it’s stunning. The place has such a great vibe to it, feels like a true old American style restaurant. Just stopped by for dessert and was slightly underwhelmed unfortunately. The bread and butter pudding was good but the Trump milkshake lacked the ginger flavour it promised unfortunately.

Despite all its extravagant decor, the place seems average at best. There is no system in place in terms of service as it took a while for me to be allocated a waiter and also incorrect orders came to me. Apart from that the food, well that was okay I guess. The potato skins could have done with melted cheese as opposed to cheese sauce which I felt spoilt the texture of the dish while the meat loaf was a bit tough and chewy. Overall, it can be better.

Not gonna lie. The first thing that drew me to eat at this restaurant is the dècor! It was amazing! You felt like you were really in a diner.

The food selection was quite broad but the food was average. We didnt have as much time to check the selection as we were rushed because "the kitchen was closing". Big portions but food was average, nothing special about it. Staff could be more accommodating.

There are so many things that could be improved as the dècor won't do any justice alone.

We decided to go to Chevy Lane because it seemed like a really cool concept (American Diner Style). We decided to order a burger and a chilli cheese dog both were overpriced for what it was. Chevy Lane is a place to host kids parties but really not for adults.

Pathetic Service from the management and staff at Chevy Lane!!!

I made a reservation yesterday for this morning at 11h00, only to get to the restaurant to be told that the place is fully booked, when I said I have a reservation, the manager told the waitress to take us to our table but he did not tell her which table was reserved nor did she bother to ask.. She walked around the restaurant aimlessly only to give us a table that was reserved for a family at 13h00... I told her I won't be rushed and to find another table or the table I asked for which was a booth seat.

She came back only to say she does not know what to do... I then went to the manager who said he would get a table for us (at this point the restaurant is still fairly empty but reserved signs are all over the tables) he then calls us to our table which I was not happy with as I requested a booth seat when I made a reservation. The manager says that the reservations came in this morning, now what I don't get is how does the morning reservations take presidence over a reservation made yesterday.

Another annoyance about this place is that the waiters and waitresses don't seem to understand how to walk because they walk into customers!!!

To the useless and incompetent management and staff at Chevy Lane, look up the word RESERVATION in the dictionary!!!

I WON'T BE GOING BACK TO THIS PLACE, I WILL NOT SUPPORT AN ESTABLISHMENT THAT DOES NOT HOW TO TREAT THEIR CUSTOMERS!!!

2019: updated review with a better experience!

The manger, this time was welcoming, it was quiet because it was during the week and we got to sit down and enjoy a good meal.

The food is amazing for a casual lunch or dinner whatever you are in the mood for.

Love the decor, Managers &
Staff friendly

2nd visit - was shocked when I looked at the Bill - R335 for a bottle of Beyerskloof Pinotage - 207% more expensive than The Baron in Bedford Village R162!

Windhoek Draught R45 - most other places in the surrounding area R29-R35

Not the place to drink - food is good 😊

Best themed decor ever, no expense spared. Cut out muscle cars for seating areas and all sorts of interesting Memorabelia everywhere. Sadly the food could be a lot tastier (disappointing Sloppy Joe Nacho’s and Tato Skins) and service could be a lot sharper.

Awesome food and atmosphere really brings out the American Muscle feel. Always enjoyed my time at Chevy Lane definitely will be going back see you soon

Beautiful decor. Great place for the kids to enjoy themselves. Service was fantastic. A bit on the pricey side but I guess it is due to bigger portions. Ordered wings, nachos, Bronx burger. Food was tasty and in line with my expectations. Overall good experience. Will definitely visit again.

We hadn’t booked a table when we had arrived and despite the restaurant being full, we were seated in less than 5 minutes. The service is good for a considerably busy place. The food was okay. It was just really loud but other than that, it’s the perfect place to take the kids.

I had high hopes fo this place and unfortunately it only lives up to its standard for parents with kids who want to go to a place where the young ones can run around supervised to have fun. This seems to be their primary focus as this and the decor are really awesome however the food is not.

I have visited this place on numerous times and the service as well as the food has been sub par. Hopefully this will change in the near future as this place is well located and has a wide variety of American diner food at arms length.

To summarise... On one visit the mac and cheese was bland and over cooked. When visiting a second time the milkshake was overpriced and just flavoured with syrup. On a third visit, the vegetarian pizza took over 30 minutes to come which was just average and a bit soggy. The onion rings and chips however were good when some spice was added.

Next time I will try the ice cream bar as this may a good option.

A lot of work needs to be done here, with regard to the food, and I hope such a review will be beneficial.

Decor and ambience at Chevy Lane is awesome. Makes you feel like you’re truly in an American Diner! There is such a wide variety on the menu so this place caters for all cravings ! It is slightly expensive, but this can be expected due to the feel and the food being given out. Staff are all very friendly ! Went on a not so busy day and food came quite quickly which was awesome. Portion sizes are incredible ! Very kids friendly place as well.

Excellent from the moment I got to the main entrance. Service brilliant quick and friendly. Good no complaints . Big portions and very well priced. Will be back.

The dĂŠcor is really lovely, you can walk around the restaurant and find new and interesting things to look at. It's all kind of 50s diner inspired and if you're lucky you can get a table built into the body of a classic car.

Unfortunately the food is overpriced. For the price of the burgers you're better off going to RocoMamas, where you'll probably get more of your money's worth. One of us ordered a meal that came with a salad and had to pay R20 extra for feta and R20 extra for olives...

One positive thing I would say is that the waitress that served us was very friendly and all the staff were very welcoming. We also didn't wait very long for our food but we did go there on a quiet night.

The menu offers a boatload of options to choose from including plenty for vegetarians. However, I think the extensive menu is a bit of the problem... They'd probably be better off serving half the dishes on there and upping the quality of those dishes. There is a medley of weird and interesting milkshake flavours too, which does match the personality of the place.

Overall I would say go there at least once to enjoy the ambiance more than the food.

Food was a bit bland and missing parts that were noted on the menu. Prices also a bit high. As it is very busy service can be slow. Had the loaded narn bread ... no naan, no chourica, burnt crust. Also tasted the chicken schnitzel ... bland.
Miguel Dos Santos
Coming to this place is definitely a different and exciting experience. It is so well decorated and has an amazing atmosphere. There are tons of options to choose from when it comes to food. The food itself though was average, not bad but not great. The portion sizes were really great though. Overall a fun experience.

Great decor!!! And that’s about it.. too loud, too expensive and very very disappointing food... plus side kids enjoyed the entertainment. Will not return anytime soon, “maybe” for a waffle that I never got to try.
Elrico Marx
What a cool place...and the burgers are insanely good. Very creative decorating, they even have real chopper motorcycles on display. See for yourselves.
I've been here twice now. The first time I had a Pilly Cheesesteak and the second time for a Chocolate Brownie Sundae. The Philly Cheese was bland, on a normal hotdog bun with fried onions and grated cheese. The chocolate sundae was a small helping of ice cream with whipped cream and dried tasteless brownie slices. The Philly Cheese was over R100 and the Sundae was R50. Service is slow, prices are high. Oh, and they ignore reviews on their Facebook page.
Amanda Layton
I've been here twice and I regret it. Your waiters aren't attentive and the food is terrible. They first time I came I had your calamari and prawns which were tasteless rubber and I couldn't even finish the food. Thinking I should give it the benefit of the doubt and try their desserts, the second time I had a Chocolate Sundae. It was 3 pieces of brownie (meant to be crumbled but were finger slices) with cream and what felt like a teaspoon of ice-cream without the chocolate sauce (that was on the menu write-up). If it was R10 I wouldn't mind but the fact that it cost R50 for what is the most disappointing thing, is a problem.

I'm extremely dissatisfied and won't return or recommend this to anyone.
Caitlin Leigh McLellan
Food was good and the service was excellent. The wait staff and the managers checked on us regularly and ensured that we had a good experience. Lovely decorations and the kids had a blast.

We were referred to Chevy Lane by a friend and were told about the decor and diner feel and thought that this would be a place we would enjoy. So we decided to check it out for ourselves.

Upon arriving we were immediately asked if we had a reservation as the venue was fully booked. We found this strange because the place was almost empty. We obviously said no and were told that the only place available was the outside section, which has a "nice view" of the parking lot, while been quickly whisked through the empty venue, we were offered a random table in the walkway which would have been extremely uncomfortable (not even sure why that was an option). We were taken through so quickly that we didn't even have a chance to admire the decor which seemed quite nice.

Once seated at our outside balcony table, we asked the waiter if it really was fully booked as it definitely didn't seem so, to be told by the waiter "that's what they say". Any hopes of an arrangement for us to be moved to a small table inside were quickly shot down, he then told us that we are welcome to walk around the restaurant to look at it. I didn't really plan to walk around the restaurant as I came to sit down and eat.

Surely a new restaurant would want to make a good first impression and go out of their way to cater for new patrons. We were not expecting the best seats in the house, but possibly just something on the inside so we could enjoy the decor and the feel of the place. Sitting outside on the balcony actually felt like we could have been at any restaurant. We noticed that most people were been taken outside to sit and I'm sure they were equally disappointed.

The waiter was friendly and our order arrived quite quickly. But the food was average at best for the exorbitant price.

The manager did also come around to check that everything was fine, and again we asked him if there was any where inside that we could sit, only to be cut off again and told that it is fully booked for a birthday party.

We left very disappointed and let down. The place really has a lot of potential and you can clearly see that a lot of money and effort went into the decor. But unfortunately when you put people outside of the venue you ruin any chance of them enjoying the actual theme and vibe. The best chance of seeing the place is when you go to the bathroom or when leaving.

There is a good chance that we will not return as nobody wants to pay so much for an average meal and average treatment. On our way out, we noticed that the place was still relatively empty, which means we could have easily sat at a small table inside and not affected anyone. It's even possible that we could of had a better experience and returned in the future.

Side note: The music playing was definitely not in line with a diner theme
Priya
The decor takes your breath away, in what I would assume is true American style (I haven’t been to the US so I won’t really know). The car booths are very popular and very cool to be seated in one.

The menu is quite extensive but the food on the other hand is below average. I had a burger and it was just okay. Portion sizes are big though.
Milkshakes say it’s “velvet” but it’s your average milkshake.

I did notice that it seemed to be a “family” restaurant and a lot of tables had brought their kids.

A lot of work and effort went into making the restaurant look fantastic so well done to the owners for that.

The food needs quite a bit of attention though.
Fabfoodie
Absolutely love the decor it is so awesome and you just want to take friends there to show them how amazing it is!!! Play area super fun for kids they just have a blast!!! So well done on that!
The downside the staff huddle in small groups chatting among themselves not paying attention to the customers the service is PATHETIC floor always dirty no care taken to ensure that the tables are clean and that they maintain the look and feel you walk in totally amazed by the decor and then sit your table and suddenly feel like you at MacDonald’s!!! The waiters need proper management they need a floor manager that is bubbly and energetic fun and inviting their management SUCKS!!! Waiters BAD!
The food Is mediocre, no imagination! Just so dull! Waited 1:40 min for a margarita pizza the owner/manager short fat guy was just like oh sorry they made a mistake! Orderd a peach sundae never came honestly milkylanes sundae are still wayyyyy better their freak shakes are not even freak what the hell!!! They always out of stock of root beer which is the only thing that is different on their menu they gave me a root beer float with a root beer syrup not the soda! Lol!!! They really need to look into getting a proper chef someone that has a flavor profile or signature tastes at least someone that understands food!!! I’m just so so disappointed as you can see that a lot of money and attention and love went into the decor and to have food that is just so terrible hire a qualified chef!such an amazing store but the food, it’s presentation and service don’t match up!!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make your food and flavors better because my kids love it there!!!!

From climbing the escalator up until the point you leave Chevy Lane (if you're a car person or not) you can't help but marvel at almost every bit of memorabilia. From the cars, to the petrol pumps, diner counters and gumball machines; it's all just incredible to look at. The service is sharp but the food takes forever to arrive. Speaking of which - isn't cheap and (I can't not order a burger) doesn't taste like quality. I'd love to say "if you like American-style food, this is it!" But sadly I can't. Pity.
Nicole Pereira
Really awesome looking restaurant with clearly a lot of effort put in, lots to do for kids and teenagers, unfortunately the same can’t be said for the food and service.. the food is pretty much below average, not consistent at all, meals arrive at different times, some food has a hint of flavour while others are bland. The service is terrible as managers and waiters seem to have a couldn’t careless attitude.. the restaurant gets extremely busy over weekends which is probably why no one cares about improving food and service and the food is very over priced. Perhaps cutting the menu in half might help the kitchen get their flavours right and put a little more effort into the food.
Nicolas Custers
The decor is great, and the restaurant is very busy. I had potato skins with cheese sauce and bacon. They could have been cooked a bit more but otherwise good. My friends had nachos. There was no salsa just lots of cheese, and they arrived cold the first time but hot the second. Main course I had the drunken chicken. It is cooked in beer. It was okay. Chicken could have been better quality. Chips are good. My friends had burgers. The patty was a bit dense. Again they were okay. Food comes is relays. Spur is a bit better in comparison. They must try improve the quality of the food. It’s almost there but noticeably a bit lacking for the area. The waiters tried their best amongst the chaos and business of the restaurant.

24.02.2018 Parents if you looking for a new funky spot to treat your kids or celebrate a birthday then this is your new go to place. It's colourful, quirky and filled with all sorts of gadgets to keep kids and adults entertained. They have an extensive menu, actually way too much to choose from so it makes it difficult as it's alot of great food items to choose from. We tried the Ribs & Wings Combo, the slow roasted Pork Belly and one of the burgers. Portions and price are really good. They just need to work on some of their food. My wings were delicious, my family didn't like it but I enjoyed them. Their slow roasted Pork Belly needed to be cooked longer as the crackling just didn't 'crackle' it just wasn't crisp. My ribs were good, could have been cooked a bit longer and my fries were spot on. The burger was good and very messy with the sauce. My red white and blue milkshake was ok, needed a bit more flavour and texture. Thumbs up for their Onion rings too. We were too stuffed for any more food and I took most of mine home anyway. So we bought some cake as takeaway. Sadly we didn't enjoy the cake. The Chocolate Cake was extremely dry. My carrot cake was nice, but it was a bit sweet topped with normal icing which made it even sweeter. I think only the Rainbow cake was promising. It was soft and moist and the icing was good. Our waitress was very sweet. Can't think of her name as it's taken me too long to write this. But definitely a place to check out, even if it's just for the cars / tables. For any birthday parties I would suggest booking as it was chaotic. #TheFoodMusketeer #TheFoodMusketeerEats #TFMChevyLane
